3 SEASON PREVIEW A NEW ERA OF PANTHER BASKETBALL Ron Hunter was named the 15th head coach of the Georgia State men s basketball program on March 21, With 17 years of heading coaching experience, Hunter takes the helm of a program looking to return to the NCAA Tournament. As a player, Hunter made the tournament three times while a member of a Miami (Ohio) squad and made another appearance in 2003 as the head coach of IUPUI. He was named Summit League Coach of the Year in both 2003 and 2006, while being know as a community leader, working with the likes of Samaritan s Feet to rise shoes for children. HISTORY IN THE MAKING Redshirt-senior Jihad Ali is on the brink of something special. Entering the season, the team captain has played in 92 games. If he was to play in all 30 of the Panthers regular season games, he would tie Trae Goldston ( ) for the most games played in school history. The Panthers are guaranteed one game in the CAA Championship in March, which would give him the record of 123 if he plays every game this year. BLOCK PARTY Senior Eric Buckner blocked 49 shots in his first season at Georgia State, third most in school history, putting him just outside the top 10 for a career. He trails Thomas Terrell ( ) by 16 to put him in the top 10 in a career. The school record is 128 set by Zavian Smith from The Panthers set a school record last year by blocking 148 shots, breaking the record of 143 set during the season. 481 AND COUNTING Georgia State has made at least one three-point field goal in 481 straight games, dating back to the season. The last team to hold the Panthers without a trey was Stetson on Feb. 18, MAKING THE GRADE Over the last four seasons, ever Panther basketball player to exhaust their eligibility has earned their degree. Last year, four more Panthers earned their degrees, with two returning for another season of basketball this year. Seniors Jihad Ali and Jamar Taylor both recently earned their degrees and will work toward post-graduate degrees this year. Dante Curry and Daniel Brown also earned their degrees after wrapping up play on the court last season. 5 HEAD COACH RON HUNTER RECORD AT GEORGIA STATE: First Season CAREER RECORD: (18th Year) Ron Hunter, who won 274 games in 17 seasons at IUPUI while earning national notoriety for his humanitarian efforts, was named the head men s basketball coach at Georgia State University, on March 21, While leading IUPUI to 25 or more wins in two of the last four seasons, Hunter has partnered with Samaritan s Feet, an organization that collects shoes for underprivileged children around the world. On Jan. 24, 2008, he coached IUPUI against Oakland in his bare feet to help raise awareness for the cause. By tipoff, Hunter s efforts had raised more than 100,000 pairs of shoes, and to date, that number has climbed well above 250,000. Ron Hunter is a proven coach and recruiter who knows what it takes to build a winning program, said Levick. He brings a tremendous amount of energy and passion, and his teams play an aggressive, uptempo style that is both entertaining and effective. And his efforts off the court and in the community are truly remarkable. We are delighted to welcome Ron Hunter to the Georgia State family as our men s basketball coach. Hunter has earned numerous national honors including an NABC Guardians of the Game Pillar Award for Service, the 2009 Giant Steps Award from the National Consortium for Academics and Sport (NCAS), and a Minority Achievement Award from the Center for Leadership Development (CLD). He was one of seven head coaches who served on the Division I Basketball Academic Enhancement Group, as appointed by late NCAA President Myles Brand, and he is a member of the National Basketball Coaches Association (NABC) Board of Directors. In his 17 seasons at IUPUI, Hunter guided the program through its transition from the NAIA and Division II level into NCAA Division I and the Summit League. He is the school s winningest coach, both in number of victories and winning percentage, and he led IUPUI to its only appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 2003 in just the school s third season as a full-fledged Division I program. The Jaguars led the nation in three-point field goal percentage that year while also ranking in the top five in both field goal percentage and free throw percentage. In , Hunter s Jaguars won 25 games, including the first post-season victory in school history. IUPUI, the Summit League runner-up, earned a berth in the College Basketball Invitational, where the Jaguars defeated Hofstra in the first round before falling to Princeton in double overtime. IUPUI ranked second in the nation in field goal percentage in Hunter s team earned third place in the conference with a 12-6 mark in conference play, along with an overall record of 19-14, including victories over Big East member USF (69-68) and Summit League champion Oakland (100-88). The Jaguars suffered a loss at NCAA No. 1 seed Ohio State and a loss to No. 2 seed San Diego State. Named Summit League Coach of the Year in 2003 and 2006, Hunter led IUPUI to the conference championship game five times from , including the 2003 title game victory over top-seeded Valparaiso. Since 2003, the Jaguars have never finished lower than fourth in the league standings, including runnerup finishes in 2003, 2004, 2006, 2008 and Sixteen of Hunter s Jaguars received first or second-team all-conference accolades, including two Player of the Year honorees in Hill (2008) and Odell Bradley (2004) as well as Defensive Player of the Year Matt Crenshaw (2004). Another 10 IUPUI players were recognized on the league s All- Newcomer team, including Newcomer of the Year winners Austin Montgomery (2007) and Robert Glenn (2009). Hunter arrived at IUPUI as head coach in and led the then-naia program to a winning record at in his first season. His second IUPUI squad posted a 22-7 mark in NCAA Division II, at the time the highest single-season winning percentage in school history. Winning records followed the next two seasons, and Carlos Knox became a three-time All-American at the Division II level. The program began its transition to Division I and the Summit League in Hunter s coaching career began in 1987, when he served as an assistant at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. During Hunter s stint, Wisconsin-Milwaukee amassed an overall record of , including a 23-4 mark in Prior to his arrival at IUPUI, Hunter spent one year as the top assistant coach at his alma mater, Miami (Ohio), under current Arizona State head coach Herb Sendek. During that season, the Redhawks were 19-10, finishing second in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) and making an appearance in the postseason National Invitation Tournament (NIT). Hunter, 46, earned his bachelor s degree in education at Miami in 1986 and added a master s in He was a standout player on strong Miami teams of the mid-1980s, along with high school and college teammate Ron Harper, who went on to a long NBA career. The Redhawks were during Hunter s four-year career and earned three consecutive NCAA Tournament berths while winning two MAC championships. 8 BASKETBALL STAFF Darryl LaBarrie, a former Georgia Tech assistant coach with Atlanta roots, spent the past two seasons on the staff at Georgia Tech under Paul Hewitt, where he worked on recruiting and with the perimeter players. In his first season with the Yellow Jackets, LaBarrie helped lead Tech a record and the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Tech nearly won the ACC Tournament, falling to Duke, in the championship. This past season, LaBarrie continued to oversee the development of Iman Shumpert, who led the Yellow Jackets in scoring, rebounds and assists and was named to the All-ACC Second Team as well as the conference s all-defensive team. Prior to his stint with the Yellow Jackets, LaBarrie spent two seasons as an assistant coach at East Carolina. LaBarrie helped the Pirates produce the top two three-point shooting seasons in school history and ranked first or second in Conference USA in that category in his two seasons. During the season, ECU made a school-record 261 treys, breaking the mark established the previous year. I am very fortunate to be able to add an individual like Darryl LaBarrie to our staff, commented Hunter. Darryl knows the city of Atlanta extremely well and will be able to help us keep the type of players we need from leaving the state. He will also be able to help our team produce the up-tempo style that we will play to be successful. A 2001 graduate of Georgia Tech, LaBarrie spent the season as an assistant coach at Campbell University. Prior to joining the Camels staff, he served as a coach with the highly regarded Atlanta Celtics AAU program. He also worked as a regional NBA scout for Marty Blake s Court Report while serving as an assistant coach at Stone Mountain (Ga.) High School. LaBarrie is no stranger to Georgia State as he earned his master s degree in sports administration on campus in 2005 while serving as a graduate assistant at Tech. He worked one year in general athletics administration ( ), then the following year with the men s basketball program ( ). LaBarrie earned three letters at Georgia Tech, playing two years under Bobby Cremins and one season for Hewitt. He helped lead the Yellow Jackets to the 2001 NCAA Tournament and received his B.S. in management that year. He began his collegiate career at Florida A&M, where he earned Mid- Eastern Athletic Conference All-Rookie Team honors as a freshman before transferring to Tech. A native of Decatur, Ga., LaBarrie was named first-team all-state and Dekalb County Player-of-the-Year as a senior when he led Tucker High School to a state title. He played with former Panther great Shernard Long, forming one of the most formidable tandems in Georgia. 9 BASKETBALL STAFF Everick Sullivan, a former associate head coach at Eastern Kentucky, spent the last three seasons with the Colonels and has 10 years of experience as a collegiate basketball coach. He helped guide Eastern Kentucky to 53 wins, including an appearance in the 2010 Collegiate Basketball Invitational postseason tournament. The Colonels were among the top 10 in the NCAA in three-point shooting percentage during his time at Eastern Kentucky, where he spent two seasons as an assistant before being promoted to associate head coach last season. Everick has a wonderful reputation as both an assistant coach and a head coach. He did a great job as a coach at Eastern Kentucky and was well respected as a head coach at Vincennes (Ind.) University. His recruiting skills and knowledge will be valuable as we continue to build our Georgia State program. In his final season with Eastern Kentucky, Sullivan helped guide the Colonels to wins over a pair of NCAA Tournament teams, Indiana State and Morehead State. The win over Morehead State ended MSU s 22-game home court winning streak and 24-game OVC home court winning streak. I am excited and eager to be a part of the new era of Georgia State athletics, commented Sullivan. I have known Coach Hunter for many years and not only has he done things the right way, he has been able to win and graduate student-athletes. Prior to his three-year stint with Eastern Kentucky, Sullivan spent the previous four years as a head coach while compiling an overall record of (.804). From , Sullivan was in charge of the Vincennes (Ind.) University program and helped the Trailblazers advance to two National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) tournament appearances. A total of 22 of his 24 student-athletes went on to a four-year institution. Sullivan began his coaching career at Wabash Valley College (Ill.) ( ) before serving one year as the head coach at Lincoln Trail College (Ill.) ( ). The native of Simpsonville, S.C., played collegiate basketball at the University of Louisville under Hall of Fame head coach Denny Crum from He played in three NCAA tournaments and is among the Cardinals all-time leaders in scoring (15th), assists (ninth), three-point percentage (10th) and dunks (10th). After earning a bachelor s degree in communications, Sullivan went on to play eight years of professional basketball in Finland, Portugal, Slovenia, Poland, Puerto Rico, Cyprus and Lebanon. In 1998, his team won the Cyprus league championship and he was voted MVP GEORGIA STATE BASKETBALL

10 BASKETBALL STAFF Claude Pardue, a former Georgia State basketball graduate assistant, spent last season as a program coordinator for Tim Floyd at the University of Texas-El Paso. A graduate of Emory University, Pardue earned his masters at Georgia State while working as a graduate assistant with the men s basketball team. I am very pleased to be able to bring back to Georgia State a person like Claude Pardue, commented Hunter. Claude knows Georgia State, our athletics department and the city of Atlanta. He will be a key component to helping to make our team a successful one. While at UTEP, Pardue was responsible for planning, coordinating and executing all team travel. He acted as the liaison between the men s basketball team and the compliance department while managing student managers and recruiting operations. Pardue was also responsible for all team gear and the team s Fastbreak Luncheons. Pardue was responsible for recruiting operations, including the planning and coordination of official visits and the recruiting database. He also assisted with all aspects of the team s video editing, including post-game film breakdown, opponent scouting and player development. Pardue was also helped track student-athlete academic progress and was responsible for planning and directing team camps. Pardue was the founder and head coach of Grand Strand s Finest AAU Basketball Program in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Working with players 17 and under, Pardue directed the squad to the Final Four of the South Carolina State Championships during summer 2006 & He has also served as a counselor at several colleges summer camps, including NC State, Davidson, Northwestern, South Carolina, Elon and VCU. A native of Myrtle Beach, Pardue attended Carolina Forest High School before spending his junior year at The Lawrenceville School in Lawrenceville, N.J. Playing for coach Ron Kane, he helped Lawrenceville to the Prep-A state championship as well as the Mid-Atlantic Prep League regular season and tournament title. He continued his playing career at Emory University in Atlanta, Ga. A four-year letterman for coach Jason Zimmerman, Pardue served as team captain his senior year and was an Academic All-Conference honoree. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Emory in 2008 and added a Masters of Science in Sports Administration from Georgia State in Pardue s other accomplishments include playing for current New York Knicks assistant coach Dan D Antoni as a member of the Beach Ball Select team in the summers of 2002 and He also traveled to China as a member of the Athletes in Action squad in GEORGIA STATE BASKETBALL 49

11 BASKETBALL STAFF Tony Bollier, a former basketball operations coordinator for the NBA, will serve as the director of basketball operations at Georgia State. Bollier, who spent the previous four years in the National Basketball Association office in New York, has a wide range knowledge of the game, as a player, coach and administrator. During the past NBA season, he was promoted to basketball operations coordinator after three seasons as a basketball operations assistant. Tony will be an extremely valuable asset to our staff, commented Hunter. He has either worked or played in every aspect of the game and will be able to coordinate everything that we need to build a successful program. I look forward to Tony being able to bring his knowledge to our team. This past season, Bollier was responsible for the administration, scheduling, travel, pay and day-to-day operations of the NBA D-League officials program. He also conducted coaching clinics for the Chinese Basketball Association, covering both offensive and defensive fundamentals and concepts. Bollier also coordinated the FastDraw and FastScout training program for all NBA D-League coaches and organized game, practice and video replay schedules for all 16 teams during the NBA D-League Showcase. Prior to his promotion last fall, he served as a basketball operations assistant for three years. During that time, Bollier compiled video playlists for a variety of basketball projects. He also tracked video footage on a daily basis for technical fouls, flagrant fouls and team decorum. He served as a nightly point of contact for any issues pertaining to live games and also aided in player and coach logistics for the NBA All-Star Weekends in New Orleans and Los Angeles. He started with the NBA in 2006 as a broadcast associate, monitoring games being played from the league operations center. Bollier aided in the creation of the 2007 NBA Playoffs schedule and assisted the basketball operations staff in their evaluation of games. He also helped to develop a system for documenting multiple game timing elements to track progress of the league initiative to quicken the pace of games. He previously worked in Atlanta as a sports production intern at Turner Sports in 2005, working primarily with Inside the NBA on TNT. Bollier worked closely with TNT announcer Ernie Johnson, as well as the general manager of the Miami Heat, Randy Pfund at the NBA Pre-Draft Camp. Bollier graduated from Wheaton College in 2006 after four seasons on the basketball team. He served as a team captain for Bill Harris during his senior season and was named to the D3Hoops. com All-Midwest Region Team, the same year he led the NCAA in free throw percentage. Bollier was a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin All-Conference honoree and finished his career as the all-time free throw percentage record holder at Wheaton. He played four years of varsity basketball in high school for his father, Phil Bollier. He and his wife Mindy welcomed their first child, daughter Avery Grace in His family resides in Dunwoody GEORGIA STATE BASKETBALL

12 BASKETBALL STAFF Dena Freeman-Patton, in her fifth year at Georgia State s, now serving as associate director of athletics for student-athlete development, oversees the support of all 345 student-athletes at Georgia State. She also serves as the academic advisor for the men s basketball program. Under her supervision, the Georgia State University student-athletes have increased their GPA and maintained grade point average of above a 3.0 for the past three years that includes the addition of a brand new football team. In addition, the APR rates for the department are at an all-time high. Freeman-Patton was a huge part of the recent success of the men s basketball program that currently boasts a %100 percent exhausted eligibility graduation rate, including 15 men s basketball graduates in the past four years. She returned to Georgia State in March 2007 after serving as academic advisor and then academic coordinator from In between, Freeman- Patton worked at the University of Maryland ( ) as an associate director of academic support and career development and at North Carolina State ( ), where she was as an academic coordinator for football. Freeman-Patton lettered in basketball at Liberty University, where she earned her bachelor s degree in sports management from in She added a master s in sports administration from Georgia State in Freeman-Patton is on the Board of Directors for the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics and former Life Skills Committee Chair. Georgia State University is a nationally certified academic support program under this organization. The Baltimore, Md., native is married to Samuel Patton and has a son, Cameron, 10. John Anderson is in his third year at Georgia State, serving as head athletic trainer for the men s basketball program. He arrived at Georgia State in August 2009 after one year as assistant athletic trainer in charge of men s basketball at Indiana State. Anderson also possesses extensive experience in professional sports, highlighted by four years ( ) as assistant athletic trainer and assistant strength coach with the NBA s Milwaukee Bucks. That followed stints as head athletic trainer with the Asheville Altitude of the NBDL ( ), the Grand Rapid Hoops of the IBL (2001) and the Yakima Sun Kings of the CBA ( ). He has also worked with the Seattle Seahawks and Seattle Mariners organizations. Anderson earned his bachelor s degree in exercise science from Arizona State in 1996 and then his master s degree in exercise and movement science from Oregon in He is a certified member of National Athletic Trainers Association as well as a certified strength and conditioning specialist. 13 BASKETBALL STAFF Jamal Terry is in his fifth season at Georgia State working as an assistant strength and conditioning coach. In his current role, Terry works directly with the men s basketball, football and men s soccer teams. On the court or the field, Terry works on all aspects of strength and conditioning with his student-athletes. He uses specific routines to maximum the potential of each studentathlete for their particular sport. Off the court, he helps with the mental preparation needed to be successful in all aspects of life. In his five years, he has worked with every sport for at least one season, helping the women s golf team to two conference championships, while men s golf, baseball and women s track & field each took home a conference title under his tutelage. Prior to arriving at Georgia State, Terry worked with the up-and-coming University of South Florida football team, spending a year at the Tampa, Fla. school. An Atlanta native, Terry coached football at Morris Brown College, his alma mater, from , while also working as a school teacher in the Atlanta area. A four-year letterwinner in football at Morris Brown, he graduated in 2000 with a degree in recreation. He and his wife Shimena currently reside in Atlanta and have a two-year son Jacob.
