He also spent fi ve years as the head coach at West Chester. At Bloomsburg, Hale has posted a career record of and holds the school record for most coaching victories. Overall in 18 years as a head coach he has a mark of (.739) and is ranked among the top 10 active coaches in NCAA Division II in winning percentage. He has led the Huskies to seven shared or outright PSAC Eastern Division titles and four NCAA post-season playoff berths. In 2005, Hale led the Huskies to a record of 11-1, including an unbeaten (11-0) mark in the regular season. It was just the fourth time in school history that a Bloomsburg team went through the regular season without a loss. He also led the team to the NCAA Division II playoffs for the fourth time in his 13 years and the fi fth time in school history. He earned PSAC Eastern Division Coach of the Year honors for his efforts. The Huskies also reached the NCAA championships in 1996, 2000 and During the 2000 season the Huskies were 12-3 and advanced to the NCAA championship game, eventually losing in the title contest. The team reached the fi nals after rallying from a 19- point defi cit against UC-Davis in the national semi-fi nals to post a win. Hale earned the American Football Coaches Association Division II National Coach of the Year following the season. Hale has also earned AFCA District I Coach of the Year honors seven times, including back-to-back years of 2000 and He has been named the PSAC Eastern Division Coach of the Year ten times, including four straight from 1994 to Hale also coached Irv Sigler, the winner of the 1997 Harlon Hill Award as the nation s best Division II football player. Sigler fi nished the year as one of the few players ever in Division II history to average more than 200 yards per game rushing. Bill Zwaan begins his fourth season as head coach of the Golden Rams after leading West Chester University to the NCAA Division II playoffs two years in a row. In 2004, Zwaan was chosen the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division Coach of the Year as his club posted a school-record 11 victories in fi nishing 11-4 overall. The Golden Rams won the PSAC East, captured the Division II Lambert Trophy for the fi rst time since 1967, and claimed an NCAA Division II Playoff victory for the fi rst time in the history of the program. Zwaan s career record is The former Widener University head football coach and director of athletics took over the Golden Ram coaching reins in February of He owns the all-time highest winning percentage at Widener at.794, while his record ranks seventh among active NCAA Division III head coaches with at least fi ve years of head coaching experience. In addition to being named the Middle Atlantic Conference and Region II Coach of the Year in 2000 and again in 2001, Zwaan was named the Tri-State Region Coach of the Year by the Maxwell Football Club and was also honored as the American Football Monthly Coach of the Year. Zwaan was a standout quarterback at the University of Delaware and led the Blue Hens to the 1974 NCAA Division II National Championship game as a junior. 2 LAST GAMES WEST CHESTER (W, at Bryant - NCAA First Round) Tyler Downes picked off a pass with 1:22 left in regulation, preserving the West Chester University victory over Bryant University in the opening round of the NCAA Division II Playoffs in Smithfi eld, RI. With Bryant driving down the fi eld for a potential game-winning score, it was Downes diving in front of a Charles Granatell pass at the WCU 22-yard line, allowing the Golden Rams to advance to the Northeast Region Semifi nals next Saturday at Bloomsburg University. The Golden Rams never trailed in the contest but could never pull away from the Bulldogs. Michael Washington caught a 75-yard touchdown pass from Bill Zwaan at 9:46 of the fi rst quarter for a 7-0 WCU lead, but Ryan Buckley countered with an 11-yard TD catch to tie the game just four minutes later. Brent Steinmetz, who rushed for 141 yards and two scores, made it 14-7 WCU with 1:53 left in the fi rst on a four-yard run, but Bryant tied the game again when Vince Norris inhaled a 34-yard TD catch. Brandan Hargrose made it with a six-yard burst in the second, but Bryant scored again when Alex Chapparo caught a three-yard pass for a touchdown on fourth down with 4:12 to go in the fi rst half. However, the Bulldogs missed the PAT and could never catch up to the Golden Rams. Alex Walsh made it before the break on a 25-yard fi eld goal before Bobby Heilmann booted a 26-yarder with 4:55 left in the third to make the score WCU. Steinmetz upped the lead to just before the third period expired on a fi ve-yard run, but Lorenzo Perry pulled the Bulldogs with two on a six-yard run. Bryant attempted a two-point conversion, but Mike Walter intercepted the ball and returned it to the Bulldog 40 before being hauled down. #6 West Chester at #3 Bryant November 18, 2006 Score by Quarters INAL #6 West Chester #3 Bryant BLOOMSBURG (W, 35-6 at Cheyney - 11/11/06) The Bloomsburg University football team captured the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division title with a 35-6 win over Cheyney University on November 11th. The win was the 10th straight for the Huskies (10-1) and marks the fi rst time BY THE NUMBERS 10 PSAC East Coach of the Year Awards for Danny Hale in his career. 27 Combined All-PSAC East players between Bloomsburg and West Chester. 112 Straight passes for Dan Latorre without throwing an interception, dating back to the Clarion game Effi ciency rating for both Dan Latorre and Bill Zwann so far this season. 597 Career punt return yards for sophomore Ryan Schuck, good for first place all-time in Bloomsburg history. He broke Sean Smith s 11-year old record of 568 yards. in school history that the team has fi nished with double digit wins in back-toback seasons. Bloomsburg will fi nd out its post-season fate on Sunday when the bids to the NCAA Division II championships will be announced on ESPN News at 1 p.m. Bloomsburg opened the scoring on its second drive of the game when quarterback Dan Latorre hit tight end Luke Kuklick with a 48-yard touchdown pass to put the Huskies in front 7-0. Cheyney scored its only touchdown of the game later in the period when Dominique Curry scored on a 73-yard pass from Ronald Thompson. The extra point was blocked giving the Huskies a 7-6 lead. In the second period the combination of Latorre to Brahin Bilal clicked twice for the Huskies. Early in the period Bilal caught a 15-yard pass for a 14-6 lead, then with under a minute to play in the half, caught a six-yard pass from Latorre for a 21-6 advantage. Bloomsburg put the game out of reach in the third period with a pair of scores. Tailback Josh Heck, subbing for the injured Jamar Brittingham, capped a 13-play, 91-yard drive with a 23-yard scoring run, then later, Ryan Schuck returned a punt 56-yards for a score to make it It was the second straight year Schuck has returned a punt for a touchdown at Cheyney. In the fourth period, Huskies coach Danny Hale emptied his bench as the team celebrated its PSAC East title, its eighth under Hale, by dousing the coach with a bucket of water. Heck fi nished the game with 98 yards rushing, while Latorre was 8-11 for 146 yards and three scores. Latorre has now gone 112 consecutive passes without an interception. Defensively, Rob Biernat made six tackles, while Phil Riccardi added four.
3 BLOOMSBURG VS. WEST CHESTER LAST TIME Quarterback Dan Latorre passed for a career-high 273 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another to lead Bloomsburg to a win over West Chester in front of a Bloomsburg homecoming crowd of over 6,100. Bloomsburg opened the scoring on the game s fi rst drive when the Huskies drove 54 yards in 17 plays with Jon Koenig connecting on a 39- yard fi eld goal attempt. Later in the fi rst period, Latorre connected with a wide-open Brahin Bilal on a 57-yard scoring pass to make it 10-0 at the end of the fi rst half. West Chester cut into the lead early in the second period when Alex Walsh hit a 20-yard fi eld goal to make the score The game stayed that way until just before halftime when Latorre capped a 70-yard scoring drive with a nine-yard run for a 17-3 lead at the break. West Chester made it 17-6 on the fi rst drive of the third quarter when Walsh hit a 31-yard fi eld goal. On the ensuing drive, Latorre hit Ryan Schuck with a 70-yard scoring pass to make it 24-6 with 12:09 left in the third. West Chester scored on its next drive to cut the lead to when quarterback Bill Zwaan hit Mike Washington with a 13- yard pass and then added a two-point conversion pass to Eric Ryffenash. The Huskies appeared to have the game in hand when Jamar Brittingham scored on a three-yard run on the fi rst play of the fourth period to make it a game. West Chester, though, rallied with two scores in the fi nal six minutes to make the game close. Zwaan threw touchdown passes of 21 and 48-yards, the latter capping a 99-yard drive, that came with 1:23 to play in the game. However, Bloomsburg s Phil Riccardi recovered the on-side kick attempt and the Huskies ran out the clock. Latorre fi nished with no interceptions, while Brittingham rushed 30 times for 108 yards and a score. Defensively, Tyler Trettin led the Huskies with seven tackles, fi ve solo, and also intercepted a pass. 1st 2nd 3rd 4th Final West Chester BLOOMSBURG THE SERIES The Golden Rams lead the all-time series over the Huskies, With Bloomsburg, Coach Hale is 10-4 all time versus his former team including 8-2 in Bloomsburg and 2-2 in West Chester. Since 1925, Hale owns more than half of the Huskies victories over West Chester. COACH HALE SOUNDS OFF: ON THE HUSKIES... The team is exited about the playoff opportunity and is remaining focused on the One Game at a Time motto. That s the way we ve approached regular season and it won t change for post-season. ON THE RAMS... West Chester is an outstanding opponent with the ability to score a lot of points. They play an aggressive defensive style and are well coached. They ve been strong in their special teams play so we will have to be at our best in all three phases of our game. 3
4 NEWS AND NOTES BATTLE OF THE PSAC ALL-STARS This week s game will feature 27 of the 58 All-PSAC East players named by the conference coaches. Bloomsburg has 12 representitives on the team while West Chester has a league-leading 15 all-conference picks. In addition, Bloomsburg s Danny Hale was named the PSAC East Coach of the Year and Dan Latorre was named PSAC East Rookie of the Year. West Chester s Lateef Ferguson was named the PSAC East Defensive Player of the Year. Brittingham Josh Heck Christian Allen DOUBLE DIGITS With a win over Cheyney in the fi nal week of the regular season, the Huskies now have ten wins on the year. With last year s 11-1 record, Bloomsburg has had backto-back double-digit win seasons for the fi rst time in school history. The 2005 and 2006 Huskies tied the school record for most wins in a two-year span with 21. The 2000 Huskies (12-1) and the 2001 Huskies (9-2) also combined for 21 wins in two years. Yds TD Dan Latorre DEJA-VU Sophomore Ryan Schuck s 55-yard punt return touchdown against Cheyney was the second of his career. As a freshman, he returned a punt for a 66-yard score, also against Cheyney. The return also pushed Schuck into fi rst place all-time for career punt return yards. He broke Sean Smith s 11 year-old record of 568 yards. Schuck now has 597 career punt return yards and also holds the single-season punt return record with 336 yards in LATORRE ON CAREER LIST Dan Latorre also sealed a place in Bloomsburg history. He now has 1,872 career passing yards, good for tenth place all-time in school history. The freshman has also thrown 112 straight passes without an interception. The streak dates back to the Clarion game. Since that game, Latorre has gone 69 for 112 (60%) and has thrown for 1,314 yards and 13 touchdowns with no picks. HUSKY TREATS Bloomsburg has had 17 drives of 10 plays or more this season, 8 drives over 80- yards, and 9 drives over fi ve minutes, with the longest being 7:56... Despite gaining 185 yards on the ground and scoring two touchdowns, Latorre has just -2 net rush yards on the year... The Huskies have forced 24 three and outs this season... Bloomsburg is 3-1 in NCAA playoff games at home, with their only loss coming last year against ESU... The Huskies are fourth in the PSAC in scoring offense while West Chester is first... Bloomsburg is also fourth in the conference in scoring defense (fi rst in the East) while West Chester is seventh. In just his rookie season, Evans is the starting right guard for the 6-4 team.
