Please contact Kathleen Offer with your request, allowing at least 24 hours to coordinate the interview. No interviews will be conducted on game days prior to tipoff. CREDENTIALS All credential requests (media and photo) should be forwarded to Kathleen Offer. Credentials are limited to professionals working in the print or electronic media, and their issuance is at the discretion of the SID. On game days, credentials will be left in the SID Office, which can be accessed by an outer door near Gate A on the west side of Mackey Arena. Persons picking up credentials will be required to furnish identification upon request. PRESS ROW Purdue utilizes its lower and upper press rows for media seating. The lower press row is reserved for radio and TV, and will be filled in with print media at the discretion of the SID. RADIO Visiting radio will have complimentary phone lines (two ISDN, two analog) at its seats on lower press row. If a second radio station from a visiting school intends to broadcast, the station should contact Kathleen Offer in order to make arrangements. MEDIA WORKROOM At the conclusion of each home game, reporters and photographers are invited to file their stories and send their photos from the media workroom, located in the Media Workroom in the basement of Mackey Arena. The workroom is equipped with power and numerous phone lines. To find the workroom, exit the playing floor through the tunnel at the north end of Mackey Arena and turn right, following the bend to Room B33. GAME DAY SERVICES Game programs, notes and media guides will be available to all members of the working media prior to tipoff. Ingame statistics will be delivered to press row at halftime. Final statistics will be delivered to the media workroom. Approximately five to 10 minutes following the conclusion of the game, postgame press conferences will begin in the media workroom. The visiting coach and any requested players will hold the first press conference. Kristy Curry and the two or three most requested Purdue players will have the second press conference. TELEPHONE LINES Should a member of the media wish to order a phone line for press row, the order must be placed at least 10 days in advance of the game needed. Orders should be placed through Verizon. 5 OUTLOOK Talk of winning a national championship may seem out of place this year in West Lafayette. After all, the Boilermakers no longer have first team Wooden All-American Shereka Wright, the school s second all-time leading scorer, on their roster. They no longer have four-year starting point guard Erika Valek, the 2004 Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award winner. They don t have Beth Jones or Lindsey Hicks either, two-year starters who, along with Wright and Valek, made up the Big Ten s all-time winningest class. Talk of what the edition of the Purdue women s basketball team does not have is fruitless. What it does have is the belief that it can and will win. No one else may think the Boilermakers can overcome the loss of four senior starters who won 113 games in four years. No one else may think they can make up an average of 42 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists per game to replace those lost from the roster. No one else may think they can win 25 or more games for the third year in a row, or contend for an eighth Big Ten title, or win a third straight Big Ten Tournament championship, or advance beyond the first or second round of the NCAA Tournament. But the Boilermakers do. Sixth-year head coach Kristy Curry realizes the expectations placed upon her team this season may be low. But in the Boilermaker camp, no one settles for less than the best. We always expect that at the end of the year we ll be playing in the Final Four, Curry says. Nothing will ever change that expectation in our program. Year in and year out, winning a national championship has always been our goal, and it always will be our goal. Accomplishing that mission this season will be easier said than done, however. Curry and the Boilermakers will have to find a way to replace the bulk of the offense from a season ago, and they will have to do it with some less-than-experienced newcomers. There s no denying that we are going to be a much different team from last year, Curry says. Everyone out there knows what we lost and knows it s going to be tough to fill in the blanks. But no one said it would be easy. We re actually very much looking forward to the challenge. And with good reason. The cupboard isn t exactly bare for Curry, who is on pace to record her 150 th career win this season. Returning for the Boilermakers are seven letterwinners, including 2004 Big Ten Freshman of the Year Katie Gearlds. Also back is Gearlds sophomore classmate Erin Lawless, a Big Ten All-Freshman Team member, and senior starting center Emily Heikes. Gearlds, Lawless and Heikes are joined on the roster by 10 teammates, five of whom are freshmen. Add it up, and the average age of the Boilermakers on Nov. 21, the date of the season-opening game against IPFW, is 19.5 years old. Katie Gearlds, the 2004 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, is a Wooden All-America candidate. Curry is unconcerned with the youth of her team. We are going to be very young this year, but we also will be very talented, Curry says. It will take some time getting everyone on the same page, but once we get there, we should be a lot of fun to watch. Following is a backcourt/frontcourt look at the Boilermakers: - Backcourt - Purdue s backcourt is bolstered by the return of Gearlds, who generally was recognized as one of the top freshmen in the country last season. A 6- foot-1 do-it-all player from Beech Grove, Ind., Gearlds averaged 10.6 points per game off the bench as a rookie in She became the first Purdue freshman to average in double figures since Stephanie White in Despite deferring to Valek and Jones as the elder stateswomen on the guard corps, Gearlds managed to log the third-most minutes of any Boilermaker last season, averaging 26.2 minutes per game. She made the most of her time, efficiently knocking down 47.6 percent of her field goal attempts. She connected on 45.7 percent of her tries from downtown, good enough to surpass the school single-season record of 44 percent that stood for the previous eight years. Gearlds undoubtedly will be expected to increase her production as a scorer and rebounder, while also ratcheting up her numbers in both the assists and steals columns. Curry is certain the sophomore sensation, already named a Wooden All- America candidate, is up to the task. Katie is a very special player, Curry says. She is tremendously talented, has one of the most complete games I have ever seen, and is an absolute joy to coach. What is impressive beyond those things is her passion for winning. There is no one more competitive than Katie, and there is no one who will outwork her. Gearlds, an honorable mention All-Big Ten player and Big Ten All-Tournament Team selection last season, will provide more to the Boilermakers than what appears on a stat sheet this year; she also will be responsible for Purdue Basketball 5

6 OUTLOOK Erin Lawless looks to break out following a Big Ten All-Freshman season in providing the most valuable intangible: leadership. Anyone, regardless of age, can be a leader, Curry says. Even though she is a sophomore, Katie has the respect of her teammates. She naturally will fill that role because she can be effective both with actions and with words. Assisting Gearlds in the backcourt will be Sharika Webb. A 5-foot-9 junior from Indianapolis, Webb has served as a substitute the last two years. As a sophomore, the gifted playmaker averaged 9.1 minutes per game. She averaged 2.2 points, 1.1 rebounds and 1.1 assists. Webb will be expected to pick up the slack, which means her figures across the board should increase this year. She got a jump start on the season when she traveled with the Big Ten Women s Basketball Foreign Tour Team to Australia in June. Curry hopes the summer trip overseas will pay dividends for Webb during the winter and early spring. Sharika has had some great experiences over the last two years, including her trip to Australia, Curry says. She also had the opportunity to play behind and learn from Erika for two years. But now it s her time. There is no question that Sharika can be a key component to our success. Also critical will be newcomers Tye Jackson and Brina Pollack. Jackson, a 5-foot-9 freshman from Houston, was named 2004 Texas Miss Basketball by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC). The 2004 Texas Class 5A Player of the Year by TABC and the Houston Chronicle averaged 12.4 points, 7.2 rebounds, 3.8 steals and 3.1 assists per game in a state championshipwinning season as a senior. Jackson, who won 130 of 144 games during her four-year career at Westfield High School, was one of 32 players invited to try out for the USA Women s Junior World Championship Qualifying Team in June. Curry considers Jackson to be one of the best in her class. Tye is an impact-type player, Curry says. She is quick and athletic, she can shoot the three, she can penetrate and find the open player, and she can get to the rim and score. She adds another dimension to our team on both ends of the floor. Like Jackson, Pollack brings a winning resume to West Lafayette. A 5-foot-8 freshman from Marlboro, N.J., Pollack was named an adidas/ea Sports Superstar after leading Marlboro High School to the Central New Jersey Group 4 state championship in Pollack scored 1,573 points in her career with the Mustangs, and won 101 of 116 games played. Pollack s talent at running an offense should translate to court time. Brina is a true floor general, Curry says. She understands how to get the right people the ball at the right time, and she is a very good ball handler. What I like most about her is her unselfishness. She has a team-first, me-second attitude, and that is very important for a point guard. Rounding out the backcourt is junior Ashley Mays, a 5-foot-8 Indianapolis product. Mays has seen limited action through her first two years as a Boilermaker, but could see her time increase, especially as a defensive stopper. Ashley will have a chance to see some more minutes this season, Curry says. Her commitment this offseason has been astonishing to see. - Frontcourt - Highlighting the Boilermaker frontcourt are Lawless and Heikes. Lawless came to West Lafayette in the fall of 2003 as one of the nation s most prized recruits from Bishop Fenwick High School in suburban Chicago. She did not disappoint as a freshman, as she averaged 7.2 points and 3.5 rebounds in 18.1 minutes per game in a reserve role. Lawless scored better than her final average 11 times, including an 18-point effort at Indiana at the start of the Big Ten season. She finished her rookie campaign strong, averaging 10.0 points on 58.5 percent shooting from the field in six postseason games. Lawless did all her damage coming off the bench, a place where she most likely won t spend too much time in Erin is one of the greatest competitors and hardest workers I ve ever seen, Curry says. She has an amazing amount of talent and skill, and I think this year she will really have an opportunity to establish herself as one of the best players in the league. Like Gearlds in the backcourt, Lawless will be counted on for more than offensive production. We are going to need Erin to lead, Curry says. She will have a lot more responsibility than she did a year ago. To a certain extent, how she and the other leaders on our team handle their new duties will be reflected in our success. Heikes, one of just two seniors on the squad, is another player who will be stepping into a leadership position. The Palos Hills, Ill., native is the lone returning starter from the season, in which she averaged 6.2 points and a team-best 6.3 rebounds per game. Standing 6-feet tall, Heikes is undersized as a center. But what Heikes lacks in physical stature, she makes up for in other areas. Emily is small for her position, but she is a very smart and hard-nosed competitor, Curry says. She has drawn some difficult defensive assignments over the last few years. She could easily back down, but she always comes ready to play. She seems to thrive as the underdog. Lawless and Heikes are known quantities, as are frontcourt mates Hannah Anderson and Carol Duncan. Anderson, a 6-foot native of West Lafayette, is in her final year with the Boilermakers after joining the team as a walkon for the season. Anderson has been sidelined with ACL tears the last two seasons, but should be completely healthy Aya Traore sat out last season with a knee injury, but could be an impact in Purdue Basketball

7 OUTLOOK Emily Heikes is the lone returning starter from the squad. at the start of her last campaign. Duncan enters her junior year with career averages of 1.7 points and 2.3 rebounds per game. Hailing from Nappanee, Ind., the 6-foot-1 forward/center will have a chance to contribute more in her third season. Carol can be a positive force for our team depending on how hard she works and how badly she wants to make a difference, Curry says. Ultimately, how much time she sees on the court will be a reflection of her desire to keep getting better and doing the little things we ask of her. Hannah has proven that good things happen to good people. Her injuries have been unfortunate to say the least, but her commitment to her teammates has never wavered. She may not score a point for us this year, but she will be valuable to us in a lot of different ways. Also valuable will be 6-foot-1 junior Aya Traore, who missed last season as a medical redshirt after tearing her PCL in a preseason scrimmage. Traore likely would have made a difference last year. She came to Purdue as a second team NJCAA All-American from Dixie State College in St. George, Utah. A native of Dakar, Senegal, Traore averaged 21.3 points as a sophomore at Dixie, ranking sixth in the final Division I junior college standings. Despite the injury last November, Traore played three games in 2003 before deciding to forego her true junior campaign to properly rehabilitate her knee. According to Curry, the year off may have been a blessing in disguise. Aya s injury last year was devastating because we really believed she could come in and help us right away, Curry says. Everything happens for a reason. The redshirt really has helped make Aya an all-around better and well-adjusted player at the Division I level. She definitely can make a difference for us. Three more difference makers will be vying for time alongside Traore. Natasha Bogdanova comes to Purdue following a year at Charlotte Christian High School in North Carolina. The 6-foot-3 freshman has followed a circuitous route to West Lafayette. She was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, then moved with her family to Toronto for her sophomore and junior seasons. After two dominating years in the Canadian high school system, Bogdanova moved on to Charlotte, where she continued to rack up honors. She was a 2004 WBCA All-American and adidas/ea Sports Superstar following a 25-5 season. Bogdanova averaged 16.8 points and 9.3 rebounds per game while leading C.C.H.S. to the North Carolina private school state championship. Natasha has perimeter skills in a 6-4 body, Curry says. She works as hard as anyone we have ever brought to Purdue. Lakisha Kiki Freeman is another freshman forward. Hailing from Saginaw, Mich., the 6-foot-1 Freeman capped her career at Arthur Hill High School by earning honorable mention Parade All- America recognition. She finished fourth in Michigan Miss Basketball voting, and was a first team allstate pick by The Associated Press, Detroit News and Detroit Free Press after averaging 13.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game as a senior. Kristy Curry will be going for her 150th career victory this season. Freeman also turned heads on the defensive end during her 2003 campaign, as she averaged 3.8 steals and 4.0 blocked shots per game. Kiki is quick, fast and athletic, and she fits right into our system, Curry says. We feel she has tremendous potential, and we would love for her to be a strong defensive presence for us. Lindsay Wisdom-Hylton rounds out not only the forward company, but also the freshman class. The 6-foot-2 product of Naperville, Ill., was a Student Sports Senior All-American and an honorable mention WBCA All-American in The three-time IBCA all-state selection totaled 1,752 career points and 1,200 career rebounds at Neuqua Valley High School, and is believed to be the first female in Illinois high school history to record 1,000 points, 1,000 rebounds, 500 assists, 500 blocked shots and 500 steals. Lindsay has as much talent as anyone we ve brought to Purdue in my tenure, Curry says. Once she makes the adjustment to the pace and the demands of the college game, she ll be ready to contribute in a very positive way. - Schedule - Though the Boilermakers will be young, Curry once again has put together a challenging schedule that should prepare them for the postseason. Purdue will start out at home against IPFW, then will head to Texas for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi s Flint Hills Islander Classic. The Boilermakers first opponent will be Arkansas, out of the Southeastern Conference. Following two games in the Lone Star State, the Boilermakers will return to Mackey Arena to face Houston. Next will be a trip west, where Purdue will play at up-and-coming power UC Santa Barbara and at UCLA. Home games against DePaul and Western Michigan follow before the Boilermakers play Duke in Indianapolis prior to the winter break. Purdue will play host to South Dakota State on Dec. 28, before starting the Big Ten season at Wisconsin two days later. Five conference games will precede Purdue s annual meeting with Notre Dame, which will take place in South Bend. After the ESPN2-televised contest against the Fighting Irish, Purdue will play 11 more Big Ten regular-season games. The Big Ten Tournament will be played March 3 to 7 in Indianapolis at Conseco Fieldhouse. Indianapolis also will be the site of the 2005 NCAA Women s Final Four. Purdue considers the Circle City to be its home away from home, and would love to finish its season with a win in the RCA Dome. 31 Melissa Bloom COORDINATOR OF BASKETBALL OPERATIONS - 1ST YEAR Melissa Bloom is in her first year in the newly created position of Coordinator of Basketball Operations. In this capacity, Bloom will be responsible for a host of duties, including compliance, travel, team meals, recruiting mailouts, summer camps, and manager oversight. The Greenfield, Ind., native has been with the Purdue women s basketball program for a number of years, however, starting in the fall of In her first season, Bloom helped break down video and assisted with tape exchange. In she assisted in scouting and on-floor coaching efforts. After receiving her undergraduate degree in kinesiology from Purdue in May 2003, Bloom took on the video graduate assistant position. An avid runner, Bloom has completed the Chicago Marathon three times. Grant Fausset VIDEO GRADUATE ASSISTANT - 1ST YEAR Grant Fausset returns to Purdue as its video graduate assistant after spending the summer of 2004 as equipment manager for the Seattle Storm. Fausset has been a part of the Boilermaker program since the season, when he started his association as a member of the male practice squad. Fausset took on managerial duties for the and seasons before graduating with a degree in agricultural communications in May. A native of Sheridan, Ind., Fausset will be responsible for breaking down film for scouting, as well as tape exchange. He also will be responsible for assisting in the production of highlight tapes. Offer has been a member of the Purdue Sports Information staff since August 1996, when she began her career as an intern. Offer, who also serves as primary contact for the Purdue men s and women s tennis teams, is responsible for facilitating media coverage of the Boilermakers. Her duties include producing the information guide and game notes, writing press releases, maintaining statistical information, coordinating press conferences and arranging interviews. In addition, she provides radio color commentary for road games, and serves as color commentator for home television broadcasts. A Detroit native and 1996 graduate of Yale, Offer was a four-year letterwinner for the Bulldog basketball team. Lindsey Baker TEAM STAFF Natasha Weddle STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING - 1ST YEAR Strength and conditioning coach Natasha Tash Weddle is in her fifth year at Purdue. She is in her first year with the women s basketball team. Weddle, a native of Trafalgar, Ind., is responsible for helping the Boilermakers develop greater speed, strength, explosive power, agility and work capacity. Her strength and conditioning programs are tailor-made and sport-specific. Prior to arriving in West Lafayette, Weddle was a graduate assistant at Tennessee and an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Kent State. She received a bachelor s degree in physical education from Evansville in 1996, and currently is pursuing a master s degree in pedagogy and administration from Purdue. In addition to women s basketball, Weddle also works with the Boilermaker volleyball, soccer and swim teams. Jessica Zuercher ATHLETIC TRAINER - 2ND YEAR Jessica Zuercher is in her second year on the Purdue athletic training staff and with the women s basketball team. She is responsible for attending to all the medical needs of the Boilermakers, in conjunction with the staff physicians. A native of Port Byron, Ill., Zuercher received her bachelor s degree from Illinois in 2000, then earned a master s and a doctorate in physical therapy from Northwestern in While working to complete her graduate degrees, Zuercher received clinical experience at Purdue, where she worked at the student health center and the athletic training room. 34 THE COACHES Now in her sixth year at the helm of the Boilermakers, Purdue head coach Kristy Curry already has made her mark as one of the best women s basketball mentors in school history. Curry has carved her own niche within the tradition-rich Purdue program. After her hiring on April 2, 1999, Curry became the first coach in NCAA history to inherit a national championship-winning team. Undaunted, she guided her first squad to four straight wins in the season, extending Purdue s school-record win streak to 34 consecutive games, a mark that ranks sixth all-time in NCAA history. Curry s coaching career began modestly in her home state of Louisiana. Raised Kristy Lynn Sims in Olla, located in the northwest portion of the Pelican State, Curry started on the prep level at Weston ( ) and Mansfield ( ) high schools. Curry quickly moved on to the collegiate ranks, first taking an assistant coaching position at Tulane for the and seasons. Curry spent the season on the sidelines at Stephen F. Austin before moving on to Texas A&M for the and campaigns. Curry s next position brought her back closer to home as an assistant coach for Louisiana Tech. Under the tutelage of Hall of Fame coaching legend Leon Barmore, Curry helped guide the Lady Techsters for three years. In , Louisiana Tech went 31-4 and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16. In , the Lady Techsters posted another 31-4 record and finished as NCAA runners-up. In Curry s last season in Ruston, Louisiana Tech went 30-3 and advanced to the NCAA Women s Final Four before being ousted by Purdue in the semifinals. Seven days after the Lady Techsters lost to the Boilermakers in San Jose, Calif., Curry was introduced as Purdue head coach. Upon her arrival in West Lafayette, Curry wasted little time winning over the Boilermaker faithful. In her inaugural season, Curry guided Purdue to a 23-8 overall record and a Big Ten Tournament championship. Curry and her staff pounded the pavement throughout that season to sign what would be recognized as the best recruiting class in the nation, highlighted by a pair of Texas high school All-Americans in Erika Valek and Shereka Wright. Curry s second season was even more successful than her first, as the Boilermakers posted a 31-7 overall record, won the Big Ten regular-season title outright and advanced to the NCAA Women s Final Four in St. Louis, Mo. After a semifinal victory against No. 15 Southwest Missouri State, Purdue fell to No. 2 Notre Dame in the title game. Despite the loss, Curry became just the second coach in NCAA history to guide her team to the NCAA championship contest in her second year as a head coach; Purdue s Carolyn Peck is the other. Purdue pressed on in , winning its second straight Big Ten regular-season title while posting a 24-6 overall record. In Curry and the Boilermakers continued their success by winning another Big Ten Tournament crown and advancing to the NCAA Elite Eight to face No. 1 Connecticut before finishing with a 29-6 record. On Feb. 27, 2003, Curry won her 100th game as Purdue head coach, with a victory against Indiana. Curry needed only 126 games to reach the milestone, and got there faster than any coach in Purdue Basketball

35 Purdue history. In addition, Curry recorded her 100th victory quicker than coaching paragons such as Pat Summitt of Tennessee, Geno Auriemma of Connecticut, Tara VanDerveer of Stanford, and Jody Conradt of Texas. The season was more of the same for Curry, who guided the Boilermakers to a 29-4 record, another Big Ten Tournament championship and a trip to the NCAA Sweet 16. Never before in the storied 28-year history of the program had teams won 25 or more games in back-to-back seasons. During her five-year tenure in West Lafayette, Curry has never failed to hang either a Big Ten regular-season or tournament championship banner in Mackey Arena. She has won at least 23 games every year, won better than 80 percent of the games she has coached, and guided Purdue to the NCAA Tournament every year. More than words, the numbers tell the story of Curry s success. After her first five seasons, Curry s overall record stands at (.814), while her Big Ten ledger rests at (.800). She owns a record of 68-5 (.932) in Mackey Arena, and boasts a Big Ten home record of 38-2 (.950). Curry and the Boilermakers have excelled in the postseason, winning three Big Ten Tournament titles and competing in a Final Four. Curry s conference tournament record is 12-2 (.857), while her NCAA Tournament record is 12-5 (.706). A great deal of Purdue s and Curry s aforementioned success can be attributed to outstanding talent. Under Curry s watch, Katie Douglas became only the third player in Big Ten history and the first Purdue player to earn two Kodak All-America honors (in 2000 and 2001). Douglas was the 2000 and 2001 Big Ten Player of the Year, and also was named the 2001 Big Ten Female Athlete of the Year. A two-time first team All-Big Ten pick, Douglas is one five Purdue players under Curry to earn first team all-conference laurels. Wright, the 2000 USA Today and Gatorade high school player of the year out of Copperas Cove, Texas, finished her four-year career under Curry as Purdue s second all-time leading scorer. Kristy Curry s Boilermakers have been successes in the classroom as well. Twelve different Boilermakers have received Academic All-Big Ten distinction over the last five years, with Douglas and Camille Cooper earning first team Academic All-America honors in Douglas and Cooper are just two of the 17 players who have earned their degrees since Every Boilermaker who has finished her playing career at Purdue during Curry s tenure has graduated. Curry is a 1988 graduate of Northeast Louisiana (now University of Louisiana-Monroe). She earned her B.S. degree in health and physical education, THE COACHES and earned a master s in kinesiology from Stephen F. Austin in Curry played four years of basketball at LaSalle High School in Olla, garnering all-state, all-district and all-region honors as a point guard. She also was a four-year softball letterwinner at LaSalle. Curry is active in the Greater Lafayette community, especially with Tippecanoe County Family Services, for whom she serves as spokesperson. In association with Family Services, Curry records public service announcements and makes personal appearances for fundraising events. A sought-after public speaker, Curry also has given her time to Girl Scouts and Habitat for Humanity. 37 THE COACHES What do you think makes Purdue attractive? There are a lot of things that are appealing about Purdue. I think that from our perspective, the greatest thing about it is that it is one of the best universities in the nation, both academically and athletically. There s no question that we can rival any other institution in both areas, and there aren t that many schools that can do that. People who earn a degree from Purdue will have the world opened to them. Basketball-wise, people who come and play for Purdue will have a chance to win Big Ten championships and national championships. It really is the best of both worlds. What does it take to wear a Purdue uniform? Wearing Purdue across your chest is a privilege. The first thing you have to do is respect that name, and understand the sacrifices and hard work of everyone who has come before you and paved the way for this program. A lot of blood, sweat and tears has gone into making Purdue what it is today, and we need to honor that past. If you want to wear the uniform you have to make a commitment to put forth every ounce of your heart and soul into this program as a student and as a basketball player. How important is family to you? Family is very important to me, not only in my program, but personally as well. Family has always been a constant for me. Those are the people you want to be around to help celebrate the good times and find your way through the bad times. In this program, there is only one thing that comes above family, and that is God. The people who love you come before you, and we apply that to our team. Every player must put the good of the whole against the good for herself. Making a strong and successful family takes sacrifices, and our kids are willing to make those. They have helped create this family, and I hope they re as proud to be a part of it as I am. Describe the relationship between the women s basketball program and the Greater Lafayette community. We have a very loving and giving relationship with this community. It s a special and unique bond that I think very few programs in the country can speak of. Night in and night out, regardless of who we re playing, Mackey has at least 8,000 people in it cheering their hearts out for us. For this size community, I think that s phenomenal. Because this community gives so much to us, we take very seriously the responsibility of giving back. It is a challenge to make time between classes and practice and travel and everything that goes into being a Division I student-athlete, but we are committed to doing what we can to show we care. There are several different groups that we ve been a part of. My primary focus is serving as the spokesperson for the non-profit organization Family Services. The mission of Family Services is to strengthen families of all income levels and to help them achieve self-sufficiency. It means a lot to be associated with Family Services because it provides so much for so many. What is it like coaching in Mackey Arena? It is an honor and something I am proud I have an opportunity to do on an everyday basis. I think what makes Mackey so special is that it s a tradition-rich basketball arena; it s not a multipurpose facility. Mackey is truly one of a kind. It s a little bit older, but it has a lot of character and charm. And you think about all the people who have played here, both on the men s and women s side. Names like Glenn Robinson, Rick Mount, Stephanie White, MaChelle Joseph. Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Kareem Abdul- Jabbar and Isiah Thomas have played here. Because of that history and because we are in the state of Indiana, which loves its basketball more than any other place in the world, this is treated as hallowed ground. I get chills every time I walk through the tunnel. What is your vision for this program? We are a goal-oriented program, so we are always looking to the future. My vision is to continue the tradition of success that this program has enjoyed. I want us to compete for Big Ten championships year in and year out. Because our league is getting stronger and stronger, we know that if we can win in this conference, we can get to Final Fours and win national championships. Beyond basketball, the vision is simple and will never change. We want and expect every young woman who comes through this program for four years to leave here with a diploma in her hands. What is the best thing about your job? There are a lot of things I enjoy about my job. I like the challenge of it. I like competing. First and foremost, though, the most rewarding thing about my job is that it is an opportunity to help positively shape the lives of young women. I like knowing that what I do makes a difference, and that motivates me to work hard every day. I wake up with a smile on my face because I feel truly blessed. What is your proudest accomplishment or achievement as a coach? I ve been coaching for 12 years now, so there have been plenty of bright spots. Everywhere I ve been I ve had something to be proud of. I think getting to the national championship game in our second year at Purdue was a big achievement and one that I ll cherish. I m proud of the fact that through all the change and all the adversity we inherited that we re able now to say that this program is ours, and that we ve maintained and continued the success. I m very proud that we ve hung a banner in Mackey Arena each year we ve been here. Off the floor, I m most proud of the fact that every player who has played four years here has graduated. 38 THE COACHES Kelly Curry is in his sixth season as an assistant coach with the Boilermakers. A quality tactician, teacher and scout, Curry is responsible for coaching the Purdue post players and also is heavily involved in recruiting and scheduling. Purdue head coach Kristy Curry counts herself lucky to have Kelly both as a husband and as an assistant coach. I am very blessed to have Kelly by my side, both personally and professionally, Kristy says. As a basketball coach, he is one of the most dedicated and hardest-working people I have ever seen. He also has tremendous passion for and knowledge of the game of basketball. Curry s strengths have translated directly to Purdue s success on the court. In , his first season with the Boilermakers, Curry helped lead Purdue to a 23-8 overall record and a Big Ten Tournament title. In he successfully prepared the Boilermakers in 31 of 38 contests, helping guide them to a Big Ten regular-season championship and an NCAA runner-up finish. In Curry played a major role in leading Purdue to a 24-6 record and its second straight regular-season conference championship. In Curry had a hand in the Boilermakers run to another conference tournament crown and an Elite Eight appearance. Last season Curry helped guide Purdue to a 29-4 record, the Big Ten Tournament title, and an NCAA Sweet 16 berth. Curry has been an assistant coach at the collegiate level for six years, starting with a one-year stint under Hall of Fame coaching legend Leon Barmore at Louisiana Tech. Throughout the season, Curry worked with the Lady Techster post players and ran the team s strength and conditioning program. Louisiana Tech saw the fruits of Curry s labor pay off, as it posted a 30-3 record and reached the NCAA Women s Final Four. Curry began his career in 1994, when he served as football, boys basketball and track and field coach at Palmer High School in Texas. After Palmer, Curry took a position at his alma mater, Hillsboro High School, in his hometown of Hillsboro, Texas, as the junior varsity boys basketball coach and freshman and varsity football coach. Curry then moved on to Quitman High School in Louisiana, where he spent two years as athletics director and girls varsity basketball coach before going to Louisiana Tech. Now settled in West Lafayette, Curry is thankful for the opportunity to make roots as a Boilermaker. I am very proud to work at Purdue, Curry says. This program has a great legacy, and every day I try a little harder to make sure that we continue the tradition set before us. The job may be demanding, but the rewards of success and accomplishment are worth it. 39 THE COACHES Katrina Merriweather is in her second year as an assistant coach at Purdue. The Indianapolis native and granddaughter of 1959 Purdue All-American Willie Merriweather serves as the program s recruiting coordinator and coaches the Boilermaker guard corps. She also has responsibilities with scouting and academics. Merriweather cherishes the opportunity to coach in her home state. I m so grateful to be coaching at Purdue, Merriweather says. I feel very fortunate to wake up every day knowing that I get to work with such incredibly talented and driven people. Purdue is a special place. Head coach Kristy Curry considers Merriweather to be one of the top young coaches in the game. Trina is an outstanding coach who brings a lot of energy and experience to our staff, Curry says. She is an extremely hard worker who is dependable and knows how to get things done the right way. She is an invaluable member of our program. In , her first year in West Lafayette, Merriweather assisted the Boilermakers in a 29-4 campaign, in which they won the Big Ten Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16. She also played a major role in recruiting a five-player class rated in many scouting services top 10. Merriweather came to Purdue following a year as an assistant coach at Illinois-Chicago. Charged with performing duties such as travel, film exchange, scouting and recruiting correspondence, Merriweather was part of head coach Lisa Ryckbosch s staff that guided the Flames to a record in Merriweather began her collegiate coaching career at Cincinnati, her alma mater. As a graduate assistant during the season, Merriweather handled scouting and film duties. The Bearcats posted a 26-5 record that year and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Merriweather graduated from Cincinnati in 2001, with a B.A. in English literature. Under head coach Laurie Pirtle, the Bearcats advanced to postseason play all four years during Merriweather s career; they played in the NCAA Tournament in 1999, and the WNIT in 1998, 2000 and From to , Merriweather and her teammates posted an record. Merriweather earned a second degree, a B.S. in secondary education, from Cincinnati in Merriweather s coaching resume extends beyond Cincinnati and Illinois-Chicago. She has coached AAU basketball for The Family, Inc., based in Indianapolis, in addition to serving as a summer camp coach at DePaul, Wright State, Cincinnati and Purdue. 40 THE COACHES Jannon Roland is in her second year as an assistant coach in West Lafayette. Roland is no stranger to Purdue; she was a four-year letterwinner for the Boilermakers from 1994 to Roland, who is responsible for coaching the Purdue wing players in addition to her scouting and recruiting duties, considers her return to the Old Gold and Black as a dream come true. I feel very privileged to have the opportunity to coach at my alma mater, Roland says. The goal of maintaining the tradition of Purdue basketball drives me every day, and I will do whatever I can to keep this program among the nation s elite. Head coach Kristy Curry is glad to have Roland on her staff. Jannon brings valuable playing experience at every level and has strong Purdue ties, Curry says. She knows what it takes to be successful, and she is committed to making every one of our players the best she can be. Also, her passion for winning is remarkable. Roland made a quick impact on the Purdue program, helping it to a 29-4 season in The Boilermakers won the Big Ten Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16. Roland enjoyed great success as a Purdue player, posting a fouryear record of (53-13 Big Ten). During her career, Roland was a member of Big Ten champion teams in 1994, 1995 and She played in the 1994 NCAA Women s Final Four in Richmond, Va., scoring 14 points in 32 minutes off the bench in Purdue s semifinal loss to eventual national champion North Carolina. Roland, who wore No. 42 as a 6-foot-1 guard/forward, was the 1997 Big Ten Player of the Year, as selected by the conference coaches. The 1997 honorable mention Kodak All-American still ranks in Purdue s top 10 all-time in points, points per game, field goals made and attempted, threepointers made and attempted, three-point percentage, free throws made and attempted, free throw percentage and minutes. After completing her collegiate eligibility in 1997, Roland played professionally for the Columbus Quest and the New England Blizzard of the ABL, the Orlando Miracle of the WNBA, and Waiti in Bordeaux, France. At the conclusion of her playing career, Roland served as executive director of J.R.K-Squared in Columbus, Ohio, from 2000 to Roland, who took on coaching and counseling duties for J.R.K-Squared, also coached high school and AAU basketball in Columbus. Roland returned to Purdue in 2003 to complete her undergraduate studies in organizational leadership and supervision. She received her degree on May 17, Roland is a native of Urbana, Ohio. As a senior at Urbana High School, Roland earned second team All-America honors from USA Today and Parade magazine. The two-time state champion, who ranked as one of the top 10 players in the nation by Blue Star Index, was named the 1993 Division II Player of the Year Purdue Basketball
