4 The Mercyhurst women s basketball team made significant strides last season under first-year head coach Karin Nicholls. After being predicted to finish last in the GLIAC South Division, Nicholls guided the Lakers to an overall mark of 8-19, a seven game improvement from , and a fifth place finish in the GLIAC South with a 4-13 mark. The Lakers have added five new faces and will rely heavily on their nine returning players and three returning starters from last year s team to mentor and guide those newcomers. Not only has the makeup of the team changed from last season, but also Nicholls is anticipating a much more aggressive style of play. We have added more speed, quickness and much needed depth in each position, Nicholls said. All of which will help us with our up-tempo style of play. We have a very exciting group of young players, intermixed with a solid core of veterans. The challenge for the Lakers will be learning to adapt their individual roles and expectations into a more unified and consistent team chemistry. Backcourt Backcourt For the first time in her career, senior, Cassie Seth, will finally play her true position for the Lakers. Seth, who averaged 10.7 points and 4.3 rebounds, will move to shooting guard after starting at point guard for the last three years. Nicholls will rely on Seth s leadership and experience along with her defensive tenacity to set the tone for the Lakers Outlook Running the offense will be newcomer Priscila Nascimento, a junior transfer (Labette Community College). Priscila brings an exciting up-tempo style of play along with tremendous court vision that will allow more opportunities to score in transition. She is an excellent defender and will provide strong leadership from a position that is instrumental to the team s success. Junior Katlyn Petit (8.9 points, 5.0 rebounds) along with seniors Mary Clare Harlan (6.4 points, 4.2 rebounds) and Coco Sommers (3.3 points, 2.0 rebounds) will provide experience and depth from the wing position. Petit will again be looked upon for her ability to knock down triples and provide vocal leadership. Harlan and Sommers each has the ability to have big games both on the offensive and defensive ends. Freshman Jena Schafer (Dayton Chaminade-Julienne High School) is a versatile player who can play both the shooting guard and point guard positions. She comes to Mercyhurst with two high school state championships and a passion to compete. Freshman Stephanie Prischak (Villa Maria High School) is an exciting open court player who should help ignite the transition game. Stephanie s speed and quickness will allow her to become a tremendous defensive player. Sophomore Amy Butler (Collegiate Academy; Central)) should help improve the Lakers three-point accuracy. All three are going to push for playing time and give the Lakers tremendous depth in the backcourt. Frontcourt Frontcourt Returning for her junior campaign, second-team All GLIAC performer Julie Anderson will once again anchor the Lakers frontcourt. Anderson led the Lakers in both scoring (15.6 points) and rebounding (7.5 rpg) last year. She continued to elevate her level of play during the off-season, which should allow her to become a more complete player. Senior twins Samantha Solada and Erin Solada will split time at the center position. Samantha (4.5 points, 2.0 rebounds) is a more dominate force on the block, while Erin (3.5 points, 3.1 rebounds) provides versatility utilizing a midrange game. Defensively, both bring a strong physical presence to the paint. Senior Megan Bush started the final nine games of the campaign and once again will add depth and bring a shot blocking presence to the frontcourt. Junior transfer Erica Elliott (Labette Community College) brings a physical style of play in the low post. Erica has a knack for rebounding and will be expected to make an immediate impact on both the offensive and defensive ends. Senior Kayla Lazor was sidelined last year due to chronic knee problems. Unfortunately she will once again be unable to compete on the court. However, her determination and work ethic on and off the court continue to set a positive example for the newcomers. 2

5 Schedule Schedule Coach Nicholls and her staff have compiled a schedule that includes 14 home games in the Mercyhurst Athletic Center and two additional non-conference games in Erie at Gannon University in the Avalon Classic. The Lakers open the season against Division I Cleveland State Monday, November 7, in an exhibition game and begin the regular season at home against Notre Dame College on Tuesday, November 15. The Lakers will have an early opportunity to measure themselves against elite Division II competition when they travel to Quincy, Illinois, to take on perennial power Quincy University. The remainder of the non-conference schedule includes regional foes Slippery Rock, Lock Haven, Mansfield and Edinboro. The Lakers open up the GLIAC schedule with a home contest against Hillsdale on December 1. This schedule provides plenty of tough competition early, which should prepare us well for the rigors of the GLIAC, Nicholls said. We are excited to have many more opportunities to play at home and showcase the continued improvements of the Mercyhurst College women s basketball program Outlook 2005 Tip-Off Dinner With John Beilein Veteran men s basketball coach John Beilein, now the head man at West Virginia University, was the featured speaker at Mercyhurst College s 18th Annual Basketball Tip-off Dinner Thursday night, November 3, at the Ambassador Conference Center at Marriott. A large crowd was on hand to greet Beilein, who was no stranger to Erie area basketball fans, having coached the Le Moyne Dolphins from the mid-80s to the early 90s when the Lakers and Dolphins were both members of the Mideast Collegiate Conference. Mercyhurst women s head coach, Karin Nicholls, addressed the crowd and discussed her upcoming season. The women open play Tuesday, November 15, when Notre Dame (Ohio) visits the Athletic Center for a doubleheader. The women s game starts at 6 pm.
