6 SUCCESS BREEDS EXPECTATIONS. Marquette s women s soccer team has had unparalleled success in the league and, with that, the league s coaches have predicted success again for the Golden Eagles. Despite not winning at least one of the Conference USA regular season or postseason crowns in 2001, Marquette is again the overwhelming favorite of the league s coaches to take the conference title. Of course, Marquette s second place finish did not mean that the Golden Eagles run atop the C-USA table was coming to an end. In fact, what it meant was the conference was growing to meet the winning tradition that MU has set as a standard for the conference. Last season, Marquette was not passed, but rather was equalled. Cincinnati proved that it would take a lot to dethrown the perennial champion. Cincinnati brought its level of play up to that of Marquette and in doing so, C-USA had two teams in the NCAA Tournament for the first time. This year, Marquette s reputation and key returnees have again laid the groundwork for a league title. To do so, the Golden Eagles will need to blend a large senior class with the youth of a 10-member freshman class. I ve always thought you are as good as your seniors are, head coach Markus Roeders said. I m confident they will step up and lead the way. Our freshmen already understand their roles. They will feed off each other. FORWARDS The biggest offensive threat in the league, and one of the biggest in the nation, comes in the form of MU senior Kate Gordon. The highly decorated forward has been tabbed the preseason Player-of-the-Year by the league after winning the same honor at the end of last year. Kate is going to continue to be our primary goal scorer, Roeders said. She s going to be a marked woman, but we want her to score as much as possibly. However, we don t want to rely on her as our only goal scorer. Gordon is a monster scorer. She has unparalleled speed and quickness. Her goal scoring was down from a year ago, but that was expected. After a record-shattering 17 goal season as a sophomore, Gordon returned to a nine goal season for the second time in her career. She needs 15 marks heading into the season to break Kelly Roethe s school record. Judging by her scoring ability, that is a realistic tally. Gordon will need help on the front line and she has two of MU s best players off the bench the last three years to help. Senior Ashley Spakowitz will round out the Marquette scoring arsenal. Spakowitz is a pure scorer. She has 12 career goals. Some of Marquette s additions will need to soften some of the loss of MU super sub Jill Vendetti. Vendetti came off the bench for five goals last season and had 6 been a consistent scoring threat for the past two seasons. A pair of freshmen round out the position. Jennifer Baker and Kristie Matola will aid in the goal scoring efforts in their first year. We have a number of scoring threats, Roeders said. We have two or three players who could score near the 10 goal mark and a bunch of other players who could score four, five and six goals. MIDFIELDERS Marquette s success lies in its midfield. The Golden Eagles return five starters from an already solid position. The central midfield spot is held by junior Kristen Jensen. A first-team all-conference selection in each of her two seasons, she is as important in controlling the pace and flow of a match as Gordon is in scoring goals. Jensen s contributions to the offense come in numerous ways that aren t always noticeable in her statistical totals. She did, however, have seven assists on the season to lead the team. She can also serve as a defensive stopper, making her way toward the MU goal when times arise. Juniors Laura Culhane, Anne Ioder, Carolyn Klopp and Lindsay Smale will make the midfield solid for two years to come. Our depth in the midfield is going to allow us to play many players and play many different formations, Roeders said. With the returning players we have at the midfield, all have different strengths and all have attack personalities and can score from out wide or near the goal. Culhane was an active shooter, launching 35 attempts. She has five career goals, proving she can find the net. Ioder is a talented all-around player. She does have the scoring touch and last year, she found the net

7 2002 C-USA PRESEASON AWARDS Player-of-the-Year Kate Gordon, Sr., F, Marquette All-Conference Meghann Burke, Sr., GK, Saint Louis Anne Dalecky, Sr., D, Marquette Amanda Duffy, Sr., F, East Carolina Kate Gordon, Sr., F, Marquette Heather Herweh, Sr., D, Cincinnati Kristen Jensen, Jr., MF, Marquette Jenny Kehl, Sr., F/MF, Saint Louis Briana McCarty, So., D, UAB Jamie Perry, So., F, Saint Louis Tasha Wagner, So., MF/D, Cincinnati Tricia Wiles, Sr., F, Southern Miss 2002 C-USA Preseason Poll 1. Marquette 2. Cincinnati 3. Charlotte 4. UAB 5. Saint Louis 6. Houston 7. East Carolina 8. Tulane 9. TCU 10. Memphis 11. South Florida 12. Southern Miss 13. Louisville 14. DePaul when most needed. All three of her tallies were match winners last season. She is also a talented defender and was a second-team all-conference selection last year. Klopp directs her attention more to the defense and transition offense. She plays out wide near the touch line and serves as a distributor. As a freshman, she was more in the mix, scoring four times compared to once last year. Smale also drifts toward the back more often than toward goal. She is a physical defensive player and was a third-team all-conference selection a season ago. All of MU s midfielders have the ability to attack and score and all can play hard-nosed defense making the mid line strong for the Golden Eagles. The bench is deep at this position as well. Sophomores Ester Bedard and Claire Weber and senior Kristin Halley will provide veteran support. Newcomers Ashley George, Heather Goranson, Lindsay Michuda and Julie Thompson will round out the midfielders. DEFENDER As talented as Marquette is at forward and midfield, it is equally talented at the defense. Senior Anne Dalecky, the conference Co-Defender-of-the-Year in 2001, returns at central defense. Last season, she sparked the back line to holding the opposition to just 15 goals in 22 matches. Senior Diana Detrie also is a solid returnee at wide defender. She and Dalecky have teamed to make the Marquette defense one of the best in the league. That duo will benefit from the return of Stephanie Welch. Likely to see more time at defender, Welch is also a forward thinking player who has proven her offensive ability off the corner kick. Playing just four time last year due to injury, Welch had 13 assists two seasons ago. We re going to rely on our older defenders quite a bit, Roeders said. Our defense might be our most experienced group. The defense is rounded out by junior Katie Michuda and sophomore Jessica Ratcliffe. The newcomers are likely to see some significant action at this position. Freshman Erin Jamieson, Courtney Sinsky and Sarah Uyenishi round out the Marquette defense. GOALKEEPER Senior Ashleigh Koenig returns for her second starting season. She is helped by an aggressive defense in front of her. She made 83 saves last year, just seventh in the conference, but had the second best goals against average mark, That mark was the 10th best in the nation. Koenig dominated time in goal last season. She played 1,964 of the team s 2,065 minutes in the net. Freshman Katie Bissen added 70 minutes of action and made five saves. Sophomore Katie Cook played in 30 minutes and did not record a save. Redshirt freshman Becky LaBarge adds depth to this already deep and talented position. Ashleigh should feel more confident with the players she has out in front of her, Roeders said. We are going to rely on her to be big. She knows how valuable she is to this team and what level we need her on. SCHEDULE With the level of play rising in Conference USA, the 14-team league offers a greater challenge with every contest. Cincinnati will remain as Marquette s biggest challenger both on the C-USA schedule and in the C- USA standings. Charlotte has been a consistent threat to the top spot every season and should do such again. A log jam 7 at the middle of the pack could make things tough on the top teams. UAB, Saint Louis and Houston are become challengers in this improving young league. Our goal is to compete for the conference title. There won t be any easy games for us, Roeders said. But with our depth, we should be able to wear some teams down and benefit from that. Marquette also has a number of challenges away from the conference slate. After starting off with Ohio, MU gets a chance to exact some revenge on Oakland. The Golden Grizzlies defeated MU in the season opener a year ago. The Golden Eagles also get a chance at women s soccer powerhouse North Carolina. MU also takes on regional foes Wisconsin and Wis.-Milwaukee and will also play Dayton. The Flyers were an NCAA tournament team last season. Looking at our overall schedule, this might be the toughest non-conference schedule we have ever put together, Roeders said. We play multiple NCAA Tournament teams. That in itself would be a challenge.

8 SUCCESS IS A TRAIT THAT head Marquette women s soccer coach Markus Roeders is familiar with. In just six previous seasons, Roeders has moved the program from competitive to a national power as evidence by his career and emphasized by the results of the 2001 season. With a career mark of (.750), Roeders has proven he can coach a team that knows how to win. The Golden Eagles made the NCAA Tournament a continued tradition in the 2001 season, advancing to the tournament for the third time in school history. MU s bid was an at-large bid a first in school history. The team also hosted the first and second rounds of the College Cup the second straight year to host a first-round contest. Marquette also won 16 matches during the year for the fourth time in school history. Roeders two most dominant players were also highly decorated. Forward The Roeders Record Season Record Pct. C-USA Pct Career C-USA Regular Season Titles: 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000 C-USA Tournament Titles: 1999, 2000 NCAA Touranment Apperances: 1999, 2000, 2001 C-USA Coach of the Year: 1996, 2000 NSCAA Great Lakes Coach of the Year: 2000 Kate Gordon was named Conference USA Player-of-the-Year and was a first-team all-region selection. Defender Anne Dalecky was the C-USA Co- Defensive Player-of-the-Year and was an all-region selection as well. In 2000, only a handful of teams won more than the Golden Eagles did. Marquette was one of just five teams to eclipse the 20-win plateau as the team soared to a season, producing a school record for wins. That feat put Marquette in the same class as national champions North Carolina (21-3-0), Notre Dame (23-1-1), Penn State (22-2-0) and Nebraska. The accolades didn t stop there. Roeders coached the program s first ever All-Americans Rhegan Hyypio (first team) and Kate Gordon (second team). Roeders also produced three all-region selections and eight all-conference selections. For his efforts, Roeders was tabbed Coach-of-the-Year in both Conference USA and the Great Lakes Region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. For the first time in school history, Marquette also finished the season nationally ranked. MU finished the year at 24th, reaching as high as 17th during the campaign. The Golden Eagles also went through the C-USA slate undefeated and won a second-consecutive conference tournament title. Roeders led his squad to a first-round NCAA Tournament win over Wright State, 2-1, at Valley Fields before falling to Texas A&M in the second round. However, it has not just been in recent years where Marquette has been successful. The Golden Eagles reached to new heights under Roeders during the 1999 season. Marquette equaled its most wins ever at that point and earned its first-ever Conference USA Tournament championship and first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament in the process. Finishing with a overall record, Marquette tallied a 2-1 overtime win 8 against Charlotte in the league title contest before scoring a dramatic, four-overtime 3-2 victory over Missouri in its debut NCAA Tournament match. In the second round, Marquette gave the eight-ranked Clemson Tigers all they could handle, but dropped a hard-fought 1-0 decision on a last-minute goal. The 1998 season, like every other Roeders coached team was an improvement on the season before. Despite finishing the season as the no. 5 seed, Roeders inspired his troops to earn an appearance in the C-USA Championship match, just one win away from an NCAA tournament bid. On the way to a record, MU received its first ever national ranking on September 14. In 1997, for the second consecutive year, Roeders guided the Golden Eagles to a share of the C-USA regular-season title and a spot in the C-USA Tournament championship game. Marquette finished with a overall record that included a Marquette-best 10-game winning streak and a 13-game unbeaten streak. In 1996, Roeders steered Marquette to a mark, twice as many wins as had ever been recorded in school history. The Golden Eagles won the C-USA regular-season title and reached the finals of the C-USA Tournament. For his efforts, Roeders was a unanimous selection in a vote of the league s coaches as the C-USA Coach-of-the-Year. In all, Roeders has produced two All-Americans, 11 all-region players and 42 all-conference selections. His teams have won four regular-season C-USA titles and two tournament crowns and has advanced to a pair of NCAA Tournaments, owning a 2-2 record. Markus is one of the finest young coaches in the country and we are fortunate to have him at Marquette, said Marquette Director of Athletics Bill Cords. He is demanding, but he expects nothing but the best effort on the field and in the classroom. For that reason, he has made this program into one of the most respected, both academically and athletically. Previously, Roeders had been an assistant coach for the MU women s

9 from previous page team in 1994 and He also served as the men s assistant coach for four years, helping MU to its most wins ever in 1994 when the Golden Eagles went Effective September 1, 1999, Roeders took on additional duties as a member of the NCAA Division I Women s Soccer Committee, which oversees all aspects of the NCAA Tournament and the NCAA s regional rankings. He also serves as chair of the Great Lakes Region committee. A native of Idstedt, Germany, Roeders began his collegiate soccer career at Brevard Junior College in Brevard, N.C., where he played for two years and was a captain. He then transferred to UNC Asheville, where he became associated with current Marquette men s soccer coach Steve Adlard, then coach of the Bulldogs. In 1987, Roeders played in 20 games and scored 11 points. The following season, Adlard appointed Roeders captain. As a senior, he appeared in 14 games and registered two goals and three assists. Roeders helped lead the Bulldogs to their first-ever appearance in the semifinal round of the Big South Tournament. Roeders received an associate degree from Brevard in A two-time member of the Big South Presidential Honor Roll, he earned a bachelor s degree in business administration from UNC Asheville in Roeders, who has a B coaching license, is a state coach for the Wisconsin Olympic Development Girls Program and a staff coach for the Region II ODP. He and his wife Katherine have a six-year old son, Kegan. The Roeders family resides in Cedarburg. FRANK PELAEZ IS IN HIS SEVENTH SEASON at Marquette following a four-year stint as head boys and girls coach at A.C. Reynolds High School in Asheville, N.C. Aiding in all aspects of the Golden Eagles program, he has been instrumental in helping head coach Markus Roeders guide Marquette to a record, three Conference USA regular-season titles and C-USA Tournament Championships and NCAA Tournament berths in each of the last three seasons. For his efforts, he was promoted to associate head JIM WELCH ENTERS HIS SECOND SEASON as an assistant coach for the Marquette women s soccer team. Welch, who had been playing professionally in 1999 and 2000, continues on the Marquette staff as a goalkeeper coach. While Welch works primarily with the men s squad, he will assist with the Golden Eagle women. A 1999 graduate of Marquette University, Welch was a four-year letterwinner for current Marquette head coach Steve Adlard. In his four years at MU, Welch became Marquette s all-time career leader in wins (42), saves (385) and shutouts (28). He is also second in career goals against average (1.24). While at Marquette, Welch earned spots on three all-conference teams and earned first team all-region status. Since departing Marquette, Welch embarked on a professional career. He was a member of the U.S. Project 40 select team and was a member of the Los Angeles Galaxy in In the 2000 season, Welch played for the Milwaukee Rampage of the A-League. Welch also has coaching experience, serving as the goalkeeper coach for the Wisconsin state ODP. 9 coach following the 2001 season. Frank has played a vital role in the growth of this program and has become a key member of not only the Marquette staff, but of the Milwaukee soccer community, Roeders said. His emotion and love for the game come through in his coaching and that reflects on our team. In four seasons as a head coach at Reynolds, Pelaez compiled an overall mark of and earned Western Carolina Coach of the Year honors for both boys and girls in 1995 and He was also the Boys Coach of the Year in Under his guidance, both the boys and girls teams earned their first conference titles in school history. In addition, both teams qualified for the state quarterfinals three times. A native of Cartagena, Colombia, Pelaez also was head coach of the North Carolina Boys Select A- Division club team for four seasons. He is currently a Wisconsin State Olympic Development Program coach. Pelaez was a four-year letterwinner as a defender at UNC Asheville, where he was coached by current Marquette men s soccer coach Steve Adlard and was a teammate of Roeders. He was the Bulldogs captain as a senior, and graduated from UNC-Asheville in 1992 with a bachelor s degree in visual arts. Pelaez has a C coaching license and has worked as an instructor at Marquette University s summer soccer camps for the past five years. He has been camp director at several additional camps, including the Soccer Express (N.C.) Summer Camps and the A.C. Reynolds Summer Soccer Camps. A FOUR YEAR letterwinner at Marquette, Melissa Moffatt will assist with the women s soccer team in the 2002 season. She is her second year serving as a manger assisting with all details of the program including travel, scheduling and practice coordination. In her four seasons, Moffatt appeared in 77 matches, starting 43. She scored 19 career points and launched 83 shots. She earned a degree in education from Marquette and is a staff coach of the F.C. Milwuakee soccer club.
