Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Nebraska, Penn State and Purdue will represent the conference in the tournament. The announcement marks the second consecutive year the Big Ten has had at least six teams representing the conference in the NCAA Tournament field, and the sixth time in conference history. A win in the opening round would send Penn State into a second-round matchup against the LSU-Green Bay winner. The Lady Lions are making their 14th appearance in the field as a member of the Big Ten, and 24th overall. It marks the third year in a row Penn State has gained entry to the field. Big Ten Tournament winner Purdue was chosen as the No. 4 seed in the Oklahoma City Regional, opening the tournament against No. 13 Liberty on Sunday. A win in the opening round would send Purdue into a second-round showdown against the Louisville-Middle Tennessee winner. The Boilermakers advance to the NCAA Championship for the 23rd time in 25 seasons and are the winningest Big Ten team in the tournament field with 44 victories in program history. Nebraska enters the field as the No. 6 seed in the Norfolk Regional and will take on No. 11 Chattanooga on Saturday in College Station, Texas. A victory against the Mocs will pit the Huskers against the Texas A&M- Wichita State winner in the second round. Nebraska is making its 11th tournament appearance and second consecutive as a member of the Big Ten. Entering the field as the No. 9 seed in the Norfolk Regional, Iowa will host first- and second-round contests at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City. The Hawkeyes will take on No. 8 Miami (Fla.) in opening round-play on Sunday. An Iowa victory in the first round would pit the Hawkeyes against the Notre Dame-UT-Martin winner in second-round play. The Hawkeyes return to the NCAA field for the sixth straight season and make their 22nd appearance overall. It is the 10th time the team has been selected to the postseason field in coach Lisa Bluder s 13 seasons in Iowa City. Michigan State appears in this year s NCAA Championship field as the No. 5 seed in the Bridgeport Regional. The Spartans open the tournament against No. 12 Marist on Saturday in College Park, Md. An opening round triumph would send Michigan State to the second round to face the Maryland-Quinnipiac winner. Michigan State makes its 13th NCAA appearance. The Spartans will play in the event for the fifth consecutive season and 10th time in 11 years. Michigan was selected to the field for the second year in a row and sixth time in program history. The Wolverines appear in the field for the first time under first-year coach Kim Barnes Arico, a veteran of four previous NCAA Tournaments. Michigan enters the field as the No. 8 seed in the Spokane Regional, facing Villanova, the No. 9 seed, in Stanford, Calif., on Sunday. A win would send the Wolverines into a secondround matchup against the Stanford-Tulsa winner. 2 BIG TEN WOMEN S BASKETBALL POSTSEASON RELEASE 2 Room For Six For the second consecutive year and sixth time in Big Ten history, six conference teams were selected to the 2013 NCAA Championship. Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Nebraska, Penn State and Purdue will represent the conference in the tournament, giving the Big Ten six NCAA-bound squads. The Big Ten is one of four conferences with at least six teams selected to the field. Penn State is a three seed in the field, while Purdue is a No. 4 seed, Michigan State earns a No. 5 seed and Nebraska is a No. 6 seed. Michigan appears on the No. 8 line, while ninth-seeded Iowa rounds out the conference contingent. Add Two To The Mix The Postseason WNIT announced its field on Monday, and two Big Ten teams were selected to the bracket, as Illinois and Minnesota earned berths into the field. The Fighting Illini make their eighth appearance in the WNIT and second postseason berth in four years. The Golden Gophers enter postseason play for the second consectutive year after winning the Women s Basketball Invitational last season. Roaring to the Top After defeating Nebraska in its regular-season finale, Penn State secured sole possession of the Big Ten Championship, the Lady Lions second consecutive outright title. It marks the seventh Big Ten title in Lady Lion history and second under fifth-year head coach Coquese Washington. Piling Up the Wins For the second consecutive season and only the fourth time in Big Ten history, six conference teams have reached the 20-wins mark, with another within two victories of the milestone. The six conference teams boasting 20 or more victories this season makes the Big Ten one of only three other conferences nationally with six or more teams having won at least 20 games this year. Penn State leads all conference teams with 25 wins entering the postseason, while Michigan State and Purdue each claim 24 victories this season. Nebraska boasts 23 wins on the year, Michigan claims 21 victories and Iowa reached the 20-wins milestone in the Big Ten Tournament. Minnesota is just two triumphs away from giving the Big Ten seven teams with 20 or more wins this season, which would be a new conference record. Where We Rank Four Big Ten teams are receiving votes in the latest Associated Press (AP) and USA Today Coaches polls. In the AP vote, Penn State leads the way at No. 8, followed by Purdue at No. 21 and Nebraska at No. 24. The Lady Lions check in at No. 8 in the coaches poll, while the Boilermakers are ranked No. 21 and the Huskers round out the poll at No. 25. Michigan State is receiving votes from both groups. Lucas Named Wooden Award Finalist Penn State s Maggie Lucas was named one of 15 finalists for the Wooden Award. The award, which honors the nation s most outstanding player, will be presented on April 12 at the annual Wooden Award Gala. Voted the Big Ten Player of the Year, Lucas finished as the conference s third-leading scorer at 20.5 points per game. The junior is seventh in Lady Lion BIG TEN. BIG NEWS. history with 1,810 points and is on pace to become the fifth member of Penn State s 2,000-point club. Lucas also ranks second in Penn State history and third in Big Ten annals with 290 career three-pointers made. Her.886 career free-throw percentage also tops the Lady Lion charts and her.436 shooting effort from long range ranks second in Penn State history. Two Named Lieberman Award Finalists Two Big Ten guards were named finalists for the Nancy Lieberman Award, given annually to the nation s top point guards. Nebraska s Lindsey Moore and Penn State s Alex Bentley were two of seven players chosen as finalists, who were selected based on their leadership, play-making and ball-handling skills. The winner will be announced during the Final Four weekend. Five Named to WBCA All-Region Team Five Big Ten standouts were named to the WBCA All-Region team. The Region 6 team is comprised of five Big Ten student-athletes as Minnesota s Rachel Banham, Nebraska s Jordan Hooper, Ohio State s Tayler Hill and Penn State s Alex Bentley and Maggie Lucas were recognized. The WBCA selection committee will select the 10-member Division I Coaches All-America team from the 52 members of the various All-Region teams. Ranking Among the Nation s Best Several Big Ten standouts appear among the top 25 of the nation s statistical leaders, according to information released by the NCAA. Ohio State s Tayler Hill is 11th in the country at 21.1 points per game, Minnesota s Rachel Banham is 12th with 21.0 points per outing and Penn State s Maggie Lucas is 13th (20.5 points per game). Lucas is fourth in the country in three-point field goal percentage at 47.5 percent, while Melissa Dixon is 20th at 40.3 and Michigan s Kate Thompson is 25th at Thompson is second nationally in three-pointers per game at 3.45 and Lucas is eighth at Penn State s Alex Bentley is sixth (3.53) in steals per game, while Iowa s Samantha Logic is 13th (6.5) in assists per game and Northwestern s Karly Roser is 17th (6.3). Wisconsin s Cassie Rochel is 14th in blocks per game at Iowa s Jaime Printy is fifth nationally in freethrow percentage (92.1 percent), followed by Lucas in ninth (89.6) and Banham in 10th (89.4). Iowa s Morgan Johnson is shooting 53.0 percent from the field, good for 18th nationally. Conference Stat Champions The Big Ten crowned its stat champions in conference games only following the conclusion of the Big Ten season. Ohio State s Tayler Hill won the Big Ten scoring title with an average of 22.3 points per game, marking the fourth time in five years a Buckeye has led the conference in the category. Iowa s Samantha Logic finished as the conference leader in assists per game, averaging 6.4 per outing, becoming the first Hawkeye to top the category since Cara Consuegra in Purdue s Sam Ostarello emerged as the Big Ten s leading rebounder this season, finishing with an average of 10.9 boards per contest. Iowa s Lisa Bluder owns 606 career triumphs, including 250 at the helm of the Hawkeyes, while Northwestern s Joe McKeown has an overall total of 580 wins. In addition, seven mentors have 250 or more career victories as Nebraska s Connie Yori has 408, Michigan State s Suzy Merchant has 340, Illinois Matt Bollant has 298, Michigan s Kim Barnes Arico has 291, Minnesota s Pam Borton has 283, Purdue s Sharon Versyp has 277 and Indiana s Curt Miller has 269 wins in each of their respective tenures. 4 BIG TEN WOMEN S BASKETBALL POSTSEASON RELEASE 4 BIG TEN ANNOUNCES WOMEN S BASKETBALL HONORS Penn State s Lucas named Player of the Year by conference coaches and media PARK RIDGE, Ill. The Big Ten Conference announced the women s basketball All-Conference teams and individual award winners. Penn State s Maggie Lucas was named Big Ten Player of the Year by the conference coaches and media. Northwestern s Maggie Lyon was honored with the Big Ten Freshman of the Year award by the coaches and media. Penn State head coach Coquese Washington received the nod from media as conference Coach of the Year, while Nebraska s Connie Yori was chosen by her peers. Illinois Adrienne GodBold earned Defensive Player of the Year accolades from the conference coaches, while Iowa s Melissa Dixon earned the Sixth Player of the Year award from the coaches. Lucas award marks the fourth time a Lady Lion has been tabbed Player of the Year, and the first since Kelly Mazzante won back-to-back honors in 2003 and Lucas is fourth in the nation in three-point field goal percentage (.475) and is third in the Big Ten in scoring, averaging 20.5 points per game. The junior has recorded 290 three-pointers in her career, just four away from moving into second place on the Big Ten s career three-point field goals list. Lucas was named first-team All-Big Ten for the second time, including a unanimous selection by the coaches. Washington earns top billing among media for the second consecutive season after guiding Penn State to the conference crown for the second time in as many years. The Lady Lions put together a 24-4 regular season record, marking their third consecutive 20-win season, and a 14-2 conference ledger. The award is the sixth in Penn State history. Yori was named Big Ten Coach of the Year by the coaches after guiding Nebraska to a 22-7 mark heading into postseason play and 12-4 ledger in conference action, including a 10-game win streak in conference play. The award marks the third conference coach of the year honor for Yori and the first for a Nebraska women s basketball coach in the Big Ten. Lyon led all Big Ten freshmen with 12.8 points and 1.5 steals per game in the regular season, en route to the Freshman of the Year award. The Northwestern newcomer was also second and third, respectively, among freshmen in rebounds (4.0) and assists (2.88) per game. She was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week four times this season and is an All-Big Ten honorable mention honoree. Lyon is the first player in Northwestern history to win Freshman of the Year honors. GodBold picks up Defensive Player of the Year laurels after tying for second in the conference in steals per game (3.4) in the regular season, as she continually faced one of the opposing team s top perimeter players. She was part of an Illinois defense that limited opponents to 29 percent shooting from three-point range on the season. GodBold is the first Illinois standout to earn Defensive Player of the Year accolades. Dixon becomes the second Hawkeye to earn Sixth Player of the Year honors, following Megan Skouby in The sophomore has appeared in all 32 games and is the team s third-leading scorer at 10.2 points per game in all contests. She leads the Hawkeyes in three-pointers per game at 2.3 per outing. In conference games, Dixon led Iowa in points per game with 12.3 tallies per contest. The coaches and media also selected All-Big Ten teams, while the coaches also picked five-player All-Freshman and All-Defensive teams. Lucas is joined by Nebraska s Jordan Hooper, Ohio State s Tayler Hill and Penn State s Alex Bentley on the coaches and media first teams. Illinois Karisma Penn was named first-team All- Big Ten by the media, while Minnesota s Rachel Banham was a first-team honoree by the coaches. The Big Ten also recognized 12 Sportsmanship Award honorees. The student-athletes chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These student-athletes must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sportscompetition setting. Mingo averaged 15.0 points per game and recorded a team-high 24 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots in the championship game. Mingo s honor marks the seventh time a Purdue standout has been tabbed Most Outstanding Player of the tournament. Tournament Titans A media panel at the 2013 Big Ten Women s Basketball Tournament selected a six-member All-Tournament Team, in addition to the Most Outstanding Player. The All-Tournament teamers were Michigan State s Jasmine Thomas, Nebraska s Lindsey Moore, Penn State s Maggie Lucas and Purdue s KK Houser, Drey Mingo and Courtney Moses. Hoopin in Hoffman Estates For the first time in the 19-year history of the Big Ten Tournament, the event was held in the Chicagoland area, as all 11 games were played at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Ill. The 2014 event will return to Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
