This year s berth in the galleryfurniture.com Bowl is the fourth bowl invitation the Pirates have earned under Logan. East Carolina also participated in the St. Jude Liberty Bowl in both 1994 and 1995, and last season played in the inaugural Mobile Alabama Bowl. 2 2 EAST CAROLINA IN GALLERYFURNITURE.COM BOWL DECEMBER 27, 2000 Wilson Becomes 13th 2,000-Yard Rusher at ECU Senior RB Jamie Wilson reached a significant career milestone in the Oct. 14 game vs. Army as he became the 13th Pirate to gain 2,000 yards rushing in his career. Wilson gained 77 yards (15 att.) against the Black Knights and now ranks No. 9 on the all-time ECU rushing chart. Wilson is coming off his most productive season, rushing for 865 yards (5.6 per attempt) with seven TDs. He also contributed 28 receptions for 266 yards, giving him 1,139 all-purpose yards in He also has moved ahead of Jerris McPhail for most receptions among ECU running backs with 89. That is 10th on the Pirate career list. As a sophomore in 1998, Wilson rushed for 647 yards. He split duty in the backfield with Leonard Henry each of the past two seasons. Wilson has a career rushing average per attempt of 4.6 per carry. Wilson was named to the preseason first-team All-CUSA squad for the 2000 season. Wilson also was tabbed as one of 35 running backs nationally as a preseason candidate for the Doak Walker Award. All-Time 2,000-Yard Rushers At East Carolina 1. The defense implemented by defensive coordinator Tim Rose was tremendously successful. The ECU defense held opponents to single digits on five occasions in The Pirate defensive unit also scored a touchdown in a stretch of five-of-six games during the season. The Pirates ranked considerably higher in most defensive statistical categories than they did in Perhaps the biggest jump, and also probably the most critical defensive statistical category, was scoring defense where the Pirates jumped from a rank of 61st in 1998 to No. 13 with the 1999 season, yielding just 17.9 points per game. LB Pernell Griffin was again among the top Pirate defenders during the 1999 season, finishing the regular season at the top of the squad in tackles with 121, including 58 solo stops. It had been hoped to red-shirt Leach, though coach Steve Logan knew Leach was ready to take the field at this level. Leach had five tackles in the Conference USA loss to the Tigers. Though Pernell Griffin and Greg LeFever have returned from injuries, Leach has continued to share playing time. He finished the regular season with 33 tackles, including four for loss and 1.5 sacks. Leach, a native of Rowland, N.C., was a highly-touted prep prospect as he recorded 138 tackles as a senior last fall and and was rated among the top recruits in the state. First-Year Players Make Key Play Vs. Syracuse A pair of first-year Pirates teamed up to register one of the biggest plays of the game in ECU s victory over BIG EAST Conference foe Syracuse in September. With the Pirates trailing 10-3 early in the second quarter, red-shirt freshman defensive back Travis Heath blocked a punt of Syracuse s Mike Shafer. The ball defelected back into the Orangemen endzone where freshman receiver Terrance Copper fell on the ball for a TD. The blocked punt score tied the contest at and was the start of a huge second quarter for East Carolina. The Pirates out-scored Syracuse 21-7 in the second period and took a lead into the halftime lockerroom. Henry Ties Career-Best Rushing Effort; Earns C-USA Offensive Player-of-the-Week Junior RB Leonard Henry equalled what was then his best single-game rushing performance when he ran for 134 in the Oct. 14 victory over Army. Henry tied his previous mark he had set at Cincinnati during the 1998 season. Henry also scored a career-best three touchdowns (2 rushing, 1 receiving) against the Black Knights, including a 77-yard run in the fourth quarter. The 77-yard burst was the longest run by an ECU back since the 1992 season and also was the 10thlongest in Pirate history. Pirates Record Four Interceptions At Louisville East Carolina picked off four passes all by different Pirate players in last month s victory at Papa John s Stadium, the most interceptions in a game for ECU since it registered four against Chattanooga in the second game of the 1998 season. Of the four Pirate defenders to notch interceptions, three of the players (Devone Claybrooks, Brandon Rainer and Travis Heath) got their first career picks. Sophomore outside LB John Williamson had his first of the season but third of his career. Miller Provides Boost To Punt Game; Named C-USA Special Teams Player-of-the-Week Sophomore Kevin Miller provided a much-needed boost to the team s punting game with an outstanding performance in the Oct. 19 win at Louisville. Miller took care of his regular placekicking duties, handled kickoffs and also averaged 45.6 yards on seven punts. For his efforts, Miller was named Conference USA s Special Teams Player-of-the-Week. His 66-yard punt late in the game pinned the Cardinals back to their 16-yard line and turned out to be a huge play in ECU preserving its three-point lead. ECU s net punting average in the game was 39.1 yards, nearly 14 yards better than the Pirates season average coming into the game.

A record crowd of 50,092 watched ECU defeat its in-state rival, East Carolina averaged 42,036 in seven home games in 1999, including home contests at Charlotte (vs. West Virginia) and Raleigh (vs. Miami). Griffin Was Pirate Leader In Tackles Again ECU linebacker Pernell Griffin had an outstanding season in 1999 and was the team leader in tackles. He has followed that up by again being the Pirates leading defensive stopper. He has been named to the firstteam All-Conference USA squad the past two seasons. He misssed four weeks of action (three games), however, after suffering a MCL injury against Syracuse Sept. 23. Griffin also contributed three sacks and three tackles for loss. Griffin Named To Watch List For Butkus Award Junior linebacker Pernell Griffin was named to the preliminary list of 2000 candidates for the prestigious Butkus Award. The Butkus Award is presented annually to the nation s best collegiate linebacker by the Downtown Athletic Club of Orlando Inc. The Butkus Award Watch List was trimmed to 10 semifinalists last month. Griffin led the Pirates in tackles last fall with 121 while contributing four sacks, six tackles for loss and two interceptions. The Butkus Award is regarded as one of the most elite individual honors in college football. Created in 1985 by the Downtown Athletic Club of Orlando Inc., the Butkus Award carries the name and support of one of the greatest middle linebackers in football history, Dick Butkus of Illinois. Rose One Of Five Finalists For Broyles Award Tim Rose, whose defensive gameplan last season helped the East Carolina football program to one of its finest seasons in history, was named one of five finalists for the prestigious Broyles Award. In its fourth year, the Broyles Award is presented annually to college football s top assistant coach. Rose joined the Pirate coaching staff in December of 1998, coming on board as the defensive coordinator with a primary responsibility working with the inside linebackers. He had spent the previous two seasons as defensive coordinator at Boston College. Rose made a tremendous impact in his first season on the Pirate staff. After inheriting a defensive unit which returned only six starters, and then losing two of those starters to seasonending knee injuries early in the campaign, ECU improved drastically in every NCAA defensive statistical category, including scoring defense where it jumped from 61st to 13th.

4 4 EAST CAROLINA IN GALLERYFURNITURE.COM BOWL DECEMBER 27, 2000 Garrard Had Great Rushing Year In 99 When observers think of East Carolina QB David Garrard, they generally focus on his passing skills. Hitting 58.0 percent last season, after a 60.6 percent accuracy mark in 1998, his passing numbers are doubtless noteworthy. Now into his junior season, his completion percentage is the bestever at ECU at 57.8 percent. However, last season, the 6-3, 235-pound Garrard became more of a running threat. Garrard rushed for 493 yards on 138 carries and a teamhigh eight TDs. Garrard ran for a career-best 101 yards and three TDs (20 att.) in the Nov. 20 win over NC State. Garrard also registered the Pirates best rushing season by a QB since 1979 when Leander Green ran for 632. Garrard, who had 164 rushing yards as a redshirt freshman in 1998, had narrowly missed his first 100-yard rushing game in a 52-7 win over Tulane, Oct. 23, finishing the game with 97 yards on 15 carries. He now has 1,015 rushing yards in his career. Tight End Combo Had 39 Catches Following the graduation of All-Conference USA tight end Buck Collins after the 1998 season, there was a lot of uncertainty for the Pirates at this position entering the 1999 campaign. But the tight end combination of Rashon Burns and Corey Floyd were a great surprise, combining for 39 receptions last season for 422 yards and five TDs. Burns had 25 catches for 236 yards and two touchdowns while Floyd caught 14 balls for 186 yards and three scores. Miller Ties School Record PK Kevin Miller kicked four field goals in last season s victory over Army, tying the ECU record for most field goals in a game. Miller equalled the mark of Jeff Heath who booted four FGs vs. Texas-Arlington in Miller s 52-yarder against Army tied the ECU mark as the third-longest field goal in Pirate history. He also had a 48- yarder in the win over the Cadets. Miller Hits 11-of-15 Field Goals Before his muscle pull which caused him to miss four games last season, placekicker Kevin Miller had certainly helped the Pirates improve one area which had lacked consistency the past several seasons. The Virginia Beach, Va. native kicked four FGs (four attempts) in the Oct. 2 win at Army and finished with 11 for the season (15 attempts). Lacewell Named All-American By Football News East Carolina senior center Sherwin Lacewell, who has been the anchor of the Pirates offensive line the past two seasons, was recently named a second-team All-American by Football News. Lacewell, a native of Durham, N.C., was also tabbed to Conference USA s first-team all-league squad for the second consecutive year. Explosion Vs. Houston One For The Record Books East Carolina s victory over Houston two Saturdays ago was certainly one for the record books. It was a day to remember as records fell and personal bests were bettered. Here are some of the noteworthy figures resulting from the Conference USA win over the Cougars: The 62 points registered by ECU were the most by a Pirate team since the 1981 season (66-23 win over East Tennessee State). The 62 points also ranks as the sixth-highest output in East Carolina history. ECU led 35-0 at halftime vs. Houston, the most points the Pirates have scored in a half since 1991 (led Akron 42-7 at halftime). Senior H-Back Keith Stokes broke his own school and C-USA single-game records for most punt return yards with 168, including a 59-yarder for a touchdown. Junior RB Leonard Henry rushed for 167 yards a career-high and three TDs in the victory. Junior QB David Garrard moved into the No. 2 position on ECU s career list for TD passes. He now has 45. Special Teams Improved Last Season Prior to last season, East Carolina s special teams woes in recent seasons were well-documented. But in 1999, special teams improved significantly for the Pirates. Senior Andrew Bayes (48.1 yards per kick) was the national leader in net punting average while PK Kevin Miller provided a lift by hitting 11/15 field goals. In addition, return specialist Keith Stokes ranked No. 8 nationally in punt return average. Three Pirates Earn First-Team All-CUSA Honors A trio of East Carolina players were named to the 2000 All- Conference USA first-team squad one on offense, one on the defensive unit and one as a special teams performer. Senior center Sherwin Lacewell was tabbed for the firstteam honor for the second consecutive season, the same for junior linebacker Pernell Griffin. Senior return specialist Keith Stokes, who also was the Pirates leading receiver this season, was tabbed as the first-team return man. Stokes was named a second-team all-league player last year. East Carolina also had a pair of offensive players named to the All-Conference USA second team. Junior QB David Garrard and junior RB Leonard Henry were tabbed to the second unit. Garrard was also on the second team last season while Henry picked up his first all-conference award. In addition, two first-year Pirates also were tabbed to the conference s all-freshman squad. LB Vonta Leach and OL Brian Rimpf were tabbed to the C-USA All-Freshman team. Henry Finishes With Career-Best Rushing Total Pirate junior running back Leonard Henry turned in his finest season at East Carolina during the 2000 season. Henry rushed for 711 yards during the campaign on only 133 carries, an impressive 5.3 yards per carry average. He recorded a team-high eight rushing touchdowns. Henry s total surpassed his previous best for a season. The Clinton, N.C. native had previously registered 634 yards during the 1998 season. He also had a career-long run during the 2000 campaign, racing 77 yards for a touchdown against Army. Henry was named to the All-Conference USA second team two weeks ago, his first all-conference honor.

Tulane DT Marc Yellock responded to his first starting assignment since last September with an outstanding game vs. Tulane Sept. 16. The senior had six tackles, one sack, one tackle for loss and a caused fumble. Yellock missed the final eight games of 1999 after suffering a broken right leg in the Pirates win over Miami. Three Of Four Longest Fumble Recoveries In History Have Come In Last Two Seasons Three of East Carolina s four longest fumble returns in school history have been recorded in the past two seasons and all three have been returned for TDs. Dominique Hatcher s 51-yarder vs. Virginia Tech in the second game of the 2000 season ranks as the second-longest the Pirates have registered. Last season, Kwabena Green had a 45-yard return for a TD vs. Tulane and Norris McCleary went 40 yards for a score against Army. The longest return for a TD came on a 97-yard runback by Ernie Lewis (1992 vs. West Virginia). Hardy intercepted a pass on Duke s first possession and returned it 26 yards untouched for a Pirate touchdown. The interception helped set the tone for the East Carolina in recording its first road shutout in 25 years. Hardy went on to record five tackles in the game. Stokes Breaks Punt For TD In 1999, return man extraordinaire Keith Stokes had two punt returns for TDs called back due to penalties. He still went on to finish No. 8 nationally in return average and had one punt return TD. Stokes notched his second career touchdown in November against Houston as he went 59 yards on a punt return for a touchdown. He finished the game with six returns for an ECU and Conference USA record 168 yards.

6 6 EAST CAROLINA IN GALLERYFURNITURE.COM DECEMBER 27, 2000 ECU s Ochoa Named To 2000 AFCA Good Works Team East Carolina University linebacker Carlos Ochoa has been named to the 2000 American Football Coaches Association Good Works Team, which honors those who show exceptional dedication to community service and to the betterment of the communities in which they live. Ochoa, a native of Chihuahua, Mexico who attended Greenville s J.H. Rose High School as a prep senior, was one of 11 players nationally named to the prestigious team. The AFCA selects two 11-man teams, a Division I-A squad and a unit from Divisions I-AA, II, III and NAIA, honoring players for their dedication and commitment to community service. From , the Good Works Team was selected by the College Football Association. When the CFA disbanded in 1997, the AFCA began selecting the teams. Ochoa is a three-year lettermen for the Pirates, seeing action on special teams and as a reserve linebacker. He was named ECU s Outstanding Male Student-Athlete last spring and having already earned his B.A. degree in political science, Ochoa is now working toward a Master s degree in internmational studies with a concentration in business. The 2000 AFCA Good Works Team is as follows: Mike Aguirre, Sr., WR, Arizona State/Mesa, Ariz.; Kyle Johnson, Sr., FB, Syracuse/Woodbridge, N.J.; Matt Layow, Sr., DE, Kentucky/Miami, Fla.; David Leaverton, Sr., P, Tennessee/Midland, Texas; Brett Millican, Sr., RB, Georgia/Lilburn, Ga.; Romaro Miller, Sr., QB, Mississippi/Shannon, Miss.; Carlos Ochoa, Sr., LB, East Carolina/Chihuahua, Mexico; Chris Palic, Jr., P, Arizona/Los Angeles, Calif.; Kevin Sides, Sr., QB; South Carolina/China Grove, N.C.; Matt Stover, Jr., OT, Western Michigan/Gladstone, Mo.; and LeVar Talley, Sr., LB, Temple/Philadelphia, Pa. ECU 40-4 Under Logan When Scoring 28 Points Or More East Carolina head coach Steve Logan has used the measuring stick of 28 points quite successfully during his tenure at the helm of the Pirate program. Since becoming head coach prior to the 1992 season, Logan and East Carolina are 40-4 (.909 winning percentage) in games in which they have scored 28 or more points. On the defensive side, Logan has used the 18-point plateau as a gauge. The Pirates are 30-6 (.833) in games in which they hold the opposition to 18 points or less. Hatcher Records First Collegiate Touchdown East Carolina reserve outside linebacker Dominique Hatcher, who saw action last season in the secondary as a true freshman, registered his first collegiate touchdown earlier this season. Hatcher, from Greensboro, N.C., scooped up a Virginia Tech fumble Sept. 7 and returned it 51 yards for a fourth-quarter score. Henry Records 5th 100-Yard Game Junior RB Leonard Henry turned in his fifth career 100-yard rushing game when he ran for 167 in the Nov. 11 win vs. Houston. The figure established a careerhigh single-game total for Henry. Fourth Quarter Numbers Speak For Themselves Head coach Steve Logan is quick to say he certainly doesn t prefer to get down early in a game by a 14-0 or 21-0 score. However, Logan will also tell you he would much rather have the momentum in the fourth quarter than in the game s opening minutes. That philosophy is reflected in the Pirates performance in the fourth quarter over the past several seasons. In the past five seasons going back to the start of the 1996 campaign, ECU has outscored its opposition by a margin in the fourth period an average of 8.5 points per contest to 5.3 points. In 2000, the difference is even greater in the fourth quarter (94-57). In the last five games, however, the opposition has outscored ECU. Louisville outscored ECU (8-0) in the fourth period, UAB 3-0 over the Pirates, Houston outscored ECU by a score, West Virginia 10-0 and Southern Miss 6-0 in the final quarter. ECU Has Trailed At Half Five Times This Season The West Virginia contest Nov. 18 marked the fifth occasion this season that the Pirates have trailed at halftime. ECU also trailed against Virginia Tech, Tulane, Memphis and UAB. The Pirates came back to defeat the Green Wave but could not rally against the other four opponents. Pirates Yield Fewest Rushing Yards Since...Duke Game Of 99 For the second straight time, the Duke offense had a difficult time moving the ball on the ground against the East Carolina defense. The Pirate defense yielded only 51 yards rushing to the Blue Devils in the season opener the fewest yards on the ground allowed by ECU since the Duke game in 1999 when the Blue Devils ran for only 32. In the air, Duke passed for 96 yards. The last time the Pirates allowed fewer passing yards was the 1998 contest vs. Ohio when the run-happy Bobcats threw for only 10 yards. Pirates Have Moved Ball The East Carolina offense has been effective for the most part this season. After 11 contests, the Pirates averaged yards per game (47th nationally). On the other hand, the ECU opposition has amassed yards in the first 11 games, giving the Pirates a current NCAA rank of 41st. Most of East Carolina s damage on offense has come through the air as the Pirates have totalled 2,473 yards passing through 11 games and 1,776 rushing. Sack Attack The Pirate defense recorded 39 sacks through the first 11 games. DT Devone Claybrooks leads the way with 7.0 sacks and OLB John Williamson had 5.5 and Pernell Griffin, Antwane Yelverton, Reggie Hamphill and Chris Howell all contributed 3.0 sacks. Griffin is also the team s leading tackler with 87 stops. 7 7 EAST CAROLINA IN GALLERYFURNITURE.COM BOWL DECEMBER 27, 2000 Stokes Is Mr. All-Purpose, No. 22 Nationally In Latest NCAA Stats East Carolina senior Keith Stokes is only in his second season as a Pirate, but the impact of the Alabama native cannot be overstated. Stokes, who transferred to ECU from Georgia Military College, has been a force in both receiving and as a return specialist. His versatility has helped Stokes rank among the national leaders both seasons in all-purpose yards. Stokes, who sat out the Army game last month (ankle injury), currently ranks No. 22 in the most recent NCAA statistics in all-purpose yardage at Stokes All-Purpose Yards Rushing Receiving Return Total Total Yds. Per Yds. Per Year Yards Yards Yards Plays Yards Play Game Leahy, Oden Newest To Coaching Staff The ECU coaching staff has undergone a few changes since the 1999 season, and the Pirates have two new members on their coaching staff this season. Dave Huxtable, who coached the Pirate defensive line last season in the second year of his second stint at East Carolina, left last March to take a position at Oklahoma State. Tony Oden, who joined the staff as receivers coach in January from Army, was switched to outside linebackers coach when Huxtable left. James Webster moved from outside linebackers to the defensive line and Bob Leahy, who has 27 years of coaching experience both at the professional and collegiate level, joined the Pirate staff as receivers coach. Leahy had spent the past 11 years as offensive coordinator at Liberty University. Stokes Among Best, 8th In NCAA Punt Returns Last Season Keith Stokes had quite an impact last season with the Pirates return game. He registered his first punt return for a TD when he went 94 yards in the Nov. 13 win over Cincinnati. Stokes set an ECU single-game record with 133 yards (four returns) and also set a school mark for average per return (33.2). The punt return was ECU s first for a score since the 1992 season when Derrek Batson went 97 yards vs. West Virginia. For the season, Stokes finished with 404 yards in punt returns. His average of 15.5 yards per return ranked No. 8 nationally. Fifth Bowl Appearance In The Past 10 Years East Carolina s participation in the 2000 galleryfurniture.com Bowl will represent the Pirates ffifth bowl appearance in the past 10 years. The Pirates other bowls in that period were the 1992 Peach Bowl, 1994 St. Jude Liberty Bowl, the 1995 St. Jude Liberty Bowl and the 1999 Mobile Alabama Bowl. ECU was 2-2 in the four bowls, winning the 92 Peach over North Carolina State and also defeating Stanford in the 1995 Liberty Bowl at Memphis. ECU In Fourth Year As Member of Conference USA East Carolina University is in its fourth year as a football member of Conference USA. The Pirates will become an all-sports member of the league, beginning with the year. The Pirates became eligible with the 1997 season to compete for the Conference USA championship. East Carolina is in its final year of competition in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) for its other sports. East Carolina had been a Division I independent since June of 77 when the Pirates left the Southern Conference to join the Division I ranks. Logan Becomes ECU s Winningest Coach With the Pirates 23-6 victory over North Carolina State last season, East Carolina head coach Steve Logan moved atop the school s all-time list for coaching victories. Logan, who now has a record of 58-44, moved ahead of Clarence Stasavich with the win over the Wolfpack. Stasavich compiled a record of during the years of Pirates Run For 332 Yards, Best Since 1996 Season East Carolina finished the Oct. 14 game vs. Army with 332 rushing yards, its best performance on the ground since the Pirates ran for 410 yards vs. North Carolina State in the 1996 season finale. ECU has averaged rushing yards per game to rank No. 42 nationally. Attendance Figure Second- Best For ECU At Home The crowd that saw East Carolina meet Virginia Tech earlier this season 45,123 was the second-largest attendance figure in Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium history. Only the crowd of 50,092 which saw ECU beat NC State last November is higher. ECU averaged 36,290 fans per game in six home games this season. Strangely, Pirates Have Five Open Saturdays In 2000 Season As strange as it sounds, ECU actually had FIVE open Saturdays during the 2000 fall. Aside from the two idle weeks (Sept. 30 & Nov. 4), the Pirates also had three games this season on days other than Saturday. East Carolina had a pair of Thursday night games this season (vs. Virginia Tech and at Louisville). ECU also closed its regular season schedule with a Friday game (Nov. 24, 1:30 p.m. ET) at Southern Mississippi. Stokes Now 12th In Punt Returns After his outstanding performancein November vs. Houston, ECU senior Keith Stokes has jumped to No. 12 in the latest NCAA punt return statistical rankings. Stokes broke his own Pirate and Conference USA single-game records for punt return yards with 168 on six returns. He raised his season average to yards per return. Steward, Nealy Record INTs East Carolina defenders Jerome Steward and Kent Nealy each recorded an interception in the Pirates victory over Syracuse in September. For Steward, it was the Jacksonville, Fla. native s second career interception (he recorded his first in the 1999 game vs. South Carolina). For Nealy, a red-shirt freshman outside linebacker, the pick was the first of his career. He has 10 tackles this season, including one sack.

Logan, the school s all-time winningest football coach, has compiled a career record of (.569). Marcellus Harris Coming Off Career-Best Game ECU senior split end Marcellus Harris notched his second 100-yard receiving game of the season and third of his career in the Nov. 18 loss at West Virginia. Harris caught six passes (tying his career-high) for a career-best 114 yards. He also scored on a 45-yard TD pass from Davis Garrard. Harris has moved to No. 7 on the Pirates all-time receiving list (94). Williamson Comes Up Big Vs. Houston Sophomore outside linebacker John Williamson was in on several key plays in the victory over Houston Nov. 11th. Williamson blocked an early Cougar field goal attempt which came at a time (8:08 of first quarter) when the game was still scoreless. He also registered an interception in the contest his second of the season and fourth of his career. Williamson finished the contest against the Cougars with five tackles, including one tackle for loss and now has recorded 38 stops during the 2000 season. Williamson also has six tackles for loss and is No. 2 on the team in sacks with 5.5 thus far during the campaign. Pirates Have Five Players Selected In XFL Draft East Carolina had five former players selected in the recent XFL Draft, including the overall No. 3 pick in quarterback Marcus Crandell. The XFL begins play this February in eight cities: Birmingham, Chicago, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Memphis, New York, Orlando and San Francisco. Conference USA had 36 players chosen in the draft, including 20 by the Memphis Maniax. The ECU players selected were as follows: Crandell, QB, No. 3, Memphis Maniax; Lamont Burns, OL, No. 60, Las Vegas Outlaws; Jeff Kerr, LB, No. 99, Memphis Maniax; Carlester Crumpler, TE, No. 438, San Francisco Demons; and Mitchell Galloway, WR, No. 467, Memphis Maniax. Henry Enjoying His Best Season East Carolina junior running back Leonard Henry has produced his best season to date with the Pirates. Splitting time for the most part for the third year in a row with senior Jamie Wilson, Henry rushed for 711 yards on only 133 carries, giving him an impressive per carry average of 5.4 yards per attempt. Henry surpassed his career-best season total of 634 yards which he notched in 1998 during a redshirt freshman campaign. Perhaps more impressive is Henry s touchdown total of nine (eight rushing one receiving) for this fall. Last season, he had only 312 yards rushing and one TD. In 98, he had four touchdowns. Henry this season has also eclipsed the 100-yard mark in three different games, also a personal-best for the Clinton, N.C. native. Henry s 2000 Game-by- Att. Yds. Avg. Copper, who was a highly-touted prospect from nearby Washington, N.C. coming out of the prep ranks, had six receptions for 143 yards in late-season outings against UAB, Houston and West Virginia. He recorded a season-best three receptions for 45 yards in the victory over Houston. Stokes Picks Up C-USA Player-of-the-Week Honor Senior H-Back and return specialist Keith Stokes was named Conference USA Special Teams Player-of-the-Week after his record-setting performance in the Nov. 11 win over Houston. Stokes broke his own ECU and Conference USA singlegame marks for punt return yards as he had 168 yards on six returns. Included was a 59-yard return for a touchdown. Aaron Harris Catches First Career TD Pass East Carolina junior wide receiver Aaron Harris was on the receiving end of two passes for 37 yards in November s loss at West Virginia. Included was Harris first career touchdown reception, a 33- yarder from QB David Garrard late in the third quarter of the contest.

The victory also was ECU s fourth against Atlantic Coast Conference competition in the last five attempts. ECU s defense pitched its first road shutout since the 1975 season when the Pirates won at The Citadel by a 3-0 score. Junior LB Pernell Griffin lead the Pirate defense with 14 tackles, including one for a two-yard loss. Cornerbacks Hardy and Jerome Steward answered any questions about ECU s youthful secondary by helping to hold Duke to 96 yards of passing offense. Overall, the Blue Devils had just 147 yards. QB Richard Alston led the Pirates on their opening drive of the second quarter and RB Jamie Wilson capped it off with a 15-yard TD run. Wilson would score another TD from three yards out to give ECU a 21-0 lead with 3:41 remaining in the first half. Little change took place in the second half. The Pirate defense continued to control the game while the offense added more points to their total. PK Kevin Miller accounted for the third-quarter scoring when he booted an 18-yard field goal off the soggy playing field. The fourth quarter was highlighted by an outstanding one-handed grab by receiver Keith Stokes. Junior QB David Garrard hit Stokes on the pass who then beat his defender for a 42-yard TD play with 8:14 remaining in the game. True freshman RB Art Brown scored his first TD as a Pirate on an eight-yard run with 4:55 remaining in the contest. Brown finished the game with 22 yards on five carries. Garrard finished the game hitting 75 percent (22-of-29) for 264 yards and one TD. Miller helped ECU in the kicking game going 5-5 on PATs in addiiton to his field goal. Jumping to a 31-0 halftime advantage due much in part to the Pirates generosity Virginia Tech went on to post a victory. The first half was sluggish to say the least for the Pirates. Chad Beasly intercepted a David Garrard pass and returned it to the ECU 17-yard line enabling Virginia Tech to score on a 14-yard run by Andre Kendrick. ECU s misfortune continued in the second quarter as Lee Suggs had a 37-yard rush to set up another Virginia Tech touchdown. Then, Andre Davis returned a Wes Herlocker punt 87 yards to put Virginia Tech up 31-0 at the end of the first half. In the second half the Pirates fought back. On the first drive in the third quarter, the Pirates charged 92 yards to score on a fouryard pass to Corey Floyd from David Garrard. On their next possession, the Pirates scored on a 37-yard pass from Garrard to Keith Stokes. Just as the Pirates started the push forward, Virginia Tech answered with two touchdowns. One was a 56-yard run by Lee Suggs, the other a 23-yard pass from Hokie Hesiman Trophy candidate Michael Vick to Browning Winn. The Pirates would not give up. Down early in the fourth quarter, Richard Alston connected with Leonard Henry for a 35-yard pass to set up a one-yard TD run by Henry. With only 45 seconds left in the game, the Pirates fought hard and Dominique Hatcher recovered a fumble and returned it for a touchdown. Garrard finished 22-of-38 passing for 296 yards.
