Duke Women s Lacrosse Duke's first year of competition in women's lacrosse came in 1996 when head coach Kerstin Kimel led the Blue Devils to a 3-12 record. The program came back in 1997 during its second campaign to secure an 8-8 mark, a solid improvement for Duke's newest sport. Then, the 1998 squad jumped to a new level, recording a 10-7 overall record and advancing to the NCAA Tournament. That season Tricia Martin was named Duke's first All-America in the sport of women's lacrosse. In 1999, the Blue Devils advanced to the Final Four, while turning in a 13-5 record. Duke posted an 11-6 record and advanced to the Elite Eight in The 2001 season was a record-breaking year as the Blue Devils registered a 15-4 record on the season, advanced to the finals of the ACC Tournament and made the school s third consecutive trip to the Elite Eight. In 2002, 2003, and 2004, Duke put together three more winning seasons with 10, 13 and 13 wins, respectively, and three trips to the NCAA Tournament. The 2005 season was one of the most successful in school history as Duke compiled a 17-4 record and advanced to the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament for the second time and claimed its first ACC Tournament Championship. Katie Chrest was awarded the Tewarraton Trophy as National Player of the Year and Megan Huether received US Lacrosse Goalie of the Year. In 2006 the Blue Devils compiled an 18-3 record and made their second straight trip to the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament. Duke also reached the ACC Tournament final for the third year in a row. Katie Chrest, Rachel Sanford, Laura Anderson, and Leigh Jester were awarded with All-America honors. Women's lacrosse became the 12th women's varsity sport at Duke University. Other women's sports include l basketball, cross country, fencing, field hockey, golf, indoor track, outdoor track, rowing, soccer, swimming, tennis and volleyball. 4 Duke enters the 2007 season with high expectations. They are ranked No. 2 in the IWLCA and Inside Lacrosse preseason polls. The Blue Devils are coming off a school-record 18 wins in 2006, and the third trip to the NCAA Final Four in school history. The trip to the NCAA tournament was the ninth straight appearance for the Blue Devils. Head Coach Kerstin Kimel was named ACC Coach of the Year after leading Duke to victories over 11 ranked teams en route to a final record of The team returns eight of 12 starters and brings in eight new freshmen. The last two seasons have been the best in the history of Duke Women s Lacrosse and the majority of our 2007 team has been an integral part of this success, said Kimel. We will work for and expect nothing less of ourselves in The two things that set this team apart from others is the tremendous depth and the unselfishness attitude of our players. The combination of these two factors will give us the best chance to reach our fullest potential in SEASON OUTLOOK With 23 letterwinners returning and a great recruiting class, the Blue Devils will have all the right ingredients for a tenth straight trip to the NCAA Tournament and a chance at both the ACC and National Championships. Attack The Blue Devils return eight of their top nine scorers from 2006 this season. That team was ranked third in NCAA Division I in goals per game with However, Duke will have to overcome the loss of top scorer and firstteam All-America selection Katie Chrest. Chrest was the ACC Player of the Year in 2006 and will be the only starter lost from the attack position. Seniors Kristen Waagbo and Leigh Jester will form an intimidating duo up front for any opposing defense. Waagbo scored 46 goals and dished out a team-best 32 assists in 2006 in becoming the team s second-leading points scorer. She already ranks fifth on Duke s all-time goals scored list with 115 and second on the career assists list with 72. Last season, Waagbo was selected All-ACC and ACC All-Tournament and was an Inside Lacrosse thirdteam All-America selection last season. She is currently fourth and sixth, respectively, for Duke s all-time leaders in points and shots. Jester scored 40 goals and notched 16 assists in 2006 on her way to having the third highest point scorer for the Blue Devils. She was named All-ACC and IWLCA/USL and Inside Lacrosse first team All-America. Kristen and Leigh are two of the most talented offensive players in the country, said Kimel. Kristen s combination of her size and stick skills is daunting for opponents. This year, she has worked incredibly hard in the offseason and has improved her speed, quickness, and strength, which will undoubtedly help Kristen take her game to a totally different level. Leigh does an outstanding job of helping to organize and facilitate our offensive schemes and her teammates. Together they are the leaders of our offense and have helped to grow and strengthen our offensive unit into one of the most powerful offenses in the ACC and the country. Junior Caroline Cryer, junior Jessica Adam, and sophomore Megan Del Monte will look to balance out the attack and add stability and depth to the position. Cryer tallied 30 goals and 11 assists last season. Adam returns to the field looking to be an integral part of the offense after taking off As a freshman, Del Monte scored 12 goals on only 15 shots for an astounding.800 shot percentage in a mere 350 minutes played. Caroline is a special player and is evolving into a tremendous leader on the field for us, said Kimel. She is an outstanding playmaker who is a great scorer and an essential connector in our transition game. I am so excited that Jess will be back on the field in The year she spent away from competition has served her well. She is playing the game at a completely new level and I am confident she will be a steady contributor within our offensive unit this spring. Caroline Cryer Megan Del Monte Megan was able to gain significant experience for us last season by playing a key role in scoring situations in big games down the stretch last season. I expect her to pick up where she left off in 2006 and continue to grow, improve and contribute in Midfield Senior captains Rachel Sanford and Michelle Menser will pace the Blue Devils in 2007 at the midfield position, where no starters were lost from last season. In 2006, Sanford was an IWLCA/USL and Inside Lacrosse All-America choice, and an All-ACC and ACC All-Tournament team member. Sanford scored 37 times and had 16 assists last year, and picked up a team-high 53 ground balls and 45 draw controls. Menser was an All-ACC selection in 2006 after recording 12 goals and 43 ground balls for the Blue Devils last season. Menser also had the best shots on goal percentage for Duke last season, putting 23 of her 28 shots on the cage, good for a.821 clip. Rachel had a fantastic season in 2006 and played a substantial role in our success, said Kimel. Rachel is invaluable at the center draw. Her quickness and ability to control where the ball is going allows us to jumpstart our transition and the offense. Michelle had a breakout season in 2006 as she moved to a defensive midfield position. Michelle has evolved into the consummate midfielder; she scraps for loose balls, makes connections and slows the ball down in transition; and is a legitimate scoring threat within our offense as well. I am looking forward to watching Michelle lead the 2007 team and continue to take her game to new heights. Helping out in a big way at the midfield spot will be junior Allie Johnson and sophomore Carolyn Davis. Johnson played in all 21 games for Duke last season, tallying eight goals and three assists. Davis had a breakout freshman year in which she started 18 games, scored 39 goals, and notched 10 assists. She was named to the ACC All-Tournament team for her efforts in that weekend. This year we are looking for Allie to take advantage of her scoring abilities, said Kimel. She is also an outstanding option in our transition. Carolyn is coming off of a tremendous freshmen season. Carolyn was a force on offense and in transition last season using her tremendous speed and stick handling. This year, she has focused on becoming a complete player and has really taken her defensive game to a new level. Three players who will look to make contributions early in their collegiate careers are the talented trio of freshmen Christie Barnes, Lindsay Gilbride, and Danielle Kachulis. Adding these players into the mix with Carolyn, Michelle, Rachel and Allie will create one of the fastest and deepest midfields in the history of Duke Lacrosse, said Kimel. Defense For the second year in a row, the Blue Devils are losing multiple starters from their defense. Last year, they responded by improving their goals allowed per game average from 7.81 to 7.67, and their NCAA Division I ranking in that category from eighth to fifth. The defense s development last season was a major reason for the Blue Devils success. Now that Laura Anderson and Ashley Coll have graduated, the Duke defense is being asked to step up their game again. 2 Three Final Four traight NCAA Appear

5 2007 SEASON OUTLOOK Allie Johnson Carolyn Davis Senior Meghan Ferguson and junior Aiyana Newton will return as the starters from last season s defense. Ferguson and Newton started all but one game together in 2006, and picked up a combined 52 ground balls. Ferguson played a total of 1101 minutes out of a possible 1279 for the Blue Devils. Newton was right behind her with 989 minutes logged. They will be joined by a few veterans who saw plenty of time last season: sophomore Christina Germinario (18 games, four starts, and 459 minutes), junior Sarah Kirchhofer (15 games, and 239 minutes), and redshirt sophomore Kim Pastrana (19 games, four starts, and 485 minutes). Junior Abigail Meyer and freshman Sara Giedgowd will also look to jump into the mix and contribute to the defensive effort. Meghan is a four year starter and is the leader of our defensive unit, said Kimel. She is accustomed to taking on big match ups and being the field general in our transition game. This season, we will be looking to play Meg higher up field in hopes that we can take advantage of her tremendous speed and athleticism in our transition games. Aiyana was given match ups against some of the nations best offensive players last season. Quick, fast, strong, aggressive and fearless, Yani can be one of the best defensive players in the ACC this season. Christina is one of our best pure defenders. Her basketball background has served her well and has translated to her tremendous defensive presence on the lacrosse field. She is quick, strong, and aggressive, and plays with an edge. As a freshman, Christina made significant contributions as either a starter or coming off the bench. This season, we anticipate that she will be a steady contributor on the defensive end of the field. Sarah is a tremendous athlete with outstanding footwork, outstanding communication skills and defensive instinct. Like Christina, we were able to utilize Sarah when ideal match ups presented themselves. I expect her to also be a steady contributor on the defensive end as well. Kim was in and out of our lineup last season based on our opponent but that never had a significant impact on her performance. As one of our best off-ball defenders, Kimi possesses tremendous anticipation and game sense thus allowing us to use her on some of the best off-ball players we saw in Kimi s talents extend beyond the defensive end of the field. She is often a seventh man in our offense and last season she was a proven force scoring big goals in games. Goalie Duke s biggest void to fill will be at the goalkeeper position, where fouryear starter Megan Huether left due to graduation. Huether had the fourthbest goals allowed average in NCAA Division I last season with a 7.34 mark and was the 2005 IWLCA Goalie of the Year. This is the first time since the 1999 and 2000 seasons where we will have two goalies that are competing for the starting position, said Kimel. Regan and Kim have both welcomed the competition that has been born of this opportunity and have embraced it as a chance to really improve. The addition of Alex Kahoe to our staff has been a tremendous boost to their development as well. Schedule Duke will face one of the toughest schedules in women s lacrosse this season. The Blue Devils will play eight of the other nine teams ranked in the top 10 of the preseason polls and 11 ranked teams* in all. The season begins with two road games out west for Duke. They will travel to Denver, Colo. for a match against the University of Denver on Feb. 16 and then to Stanford, Calif. to face the No. 18 Cardinal on Feb. 18. The home opener will be against No. 13 Richmond on Feb. 23, and then William and Mary comes to Durham on Feb. 25. The Blue Devils ACC opener is on the road against No. 8 Maryland on March 3 in College Park, Md. Duke returns home for a pair of games with No. 6 Princeton on March 11 and No. 19 Vanderbilt on March 14. They then travel to Washington, DC, to take on No. 3 Georgetown on March 18 before taking on ACC foe Virginia Tech at home on March 23. The Blue Devils then face a tough four game road stretch in which they play at No. 9 Virginia on March 31, at No. 5 Notre Dame on April 5, at No. 1 Northwestern on April 7, and at Boston College on April 14. Duke returns home for a weekend of home games against No. 4 North Carolina on April 20 and Longwood on April 22. The ACC Tournament will be held from April in Chapel Hill, N.C., just down the road for the team. The final regular season game of the year and senior day will be on May 6 at home versus No. 6 Dartmouth. If Duke makes the NCAA Tournament for the tenth year in a row, it will be played from May 13-27, with the first two rounds being held at the higher seed s home field and the Final Four taking place in Philadelphia, Pa. We have always taken enormous pride in the quality and competitiveness of our schedule, and 2007 is no different, said Kimel. My staff, the team and I look forward to preparing for the challenges we will face both in conference play and against our traditional rivals. *Official rankings taken from the IWLCA/US Lacrosse Preseason Poll Aiyana Newton The Blue Devils will have junior Regan Bosch and sophomore Kim Imbesi competing for the starting spot throughout the season. Bosch played a total of 68 minutes in eight games in 2006 and recorded a.458 save percentage and goals against average. Imbesi saw 53 minutes of action in seven games and totaled a.273 save percentage and 9.01 goals against average. Three Final Four traight NCAA Appear 3

The Blue Devils then defeated No. 4 Maryland, 19-9, in the ACC Tournament before succumbing to No. 2 Virginia, 13-8, in a rematch of the 2005 ACC title game. After a victory over No. 8 Dartmouth and two wins in the NCAA Tournament, Duke advanced to the Final Four for the third time in school history. The 18 wins on the season were the most ever by a Blue Devils squad. The team also set school records for goals, shots and points in a season. For the first time in school history, Duke advanced to the ACC Championship game and finished with a 2-1 league record. Duke reached the NCAA Tournament for the fifth straight year in 2002, advancing to the Elite Eight for the fourth time in school history. The 2003 season brought greater successes with a sixth consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament where the Blue Devils hosted for the fifth year in a row. The upward trend continued in 2004 as the Blue Devils went undefeated in the ACC regular season, tallying big wins over Maryland, North Carolina and eventual national champion Virginia. Duke finished the year with a 13-6 record overall and placed three players on All-America squads. The 2005 season saw Duke go 17-4 and win the ACC regular season with a 3-1 record. The Blue Devils also won their first ever ACC Tournament by defeating Virginia in the final, 9-6. The season included eight wins over ranked opponents and the program s second ever trip to the Final Four. Katie Chrest also won the Tewaaraton Trophy as the nation s top female lacrosse player. Kimel is no stranger to NCAA Women s Lacrosse Championships as she played four years at the University of Maryland from The Havertown, Pa., native, was a two-time All-America selection at Maryland and led the Terrapins to four consecutive Final Four appear and the 1992 National Championship. Maryland won the 1992 championship by defeating Harvard, 11-10, in double overtime after knocking off Virginia, 8-7, behind two goals from Kimel. After graduating from Maryland in 1993 with a bachelor s degree in speech communications, Kimel became one of the youngest Division I head coaches in the country as the leader of the newly-created program at Davidson College. 18 The Duke Lacrosse Experience KRISTEN WAAGBO, SENIOR It is hard to put into words why I love Duke Lacrosse, but the one word that comes to mind is family. I have developed amazing relationships with my coaches, teammates and support staff, and it is easy to step on the field and play for them over myself. This type of selflessness and loving attitude makes me very thankful that I have had the opportunity to be a part of this special and successful team. MICHELLE MENSER, SENIOR Duke lacrosse has become a family to me over the past three-and-ahalf years. The incredible support offered by our coaches and teammates makes the overall team bond truly unique. The experience carries much further than just on the field, as each team member is committed to developing lasting relationships within the program that will carry beyond the college years. FAMILY BETSEY SAUER, FRESHMAN My favorite part of Duke lacrosse is that we are more than a team. We are family. The girls that stand by each other everyday, the coaches that constantly believe in all of us and the support staff of medical and conditioning trainers that push us to the limit are all a part of the Duke lacrosse family. SARA GIEDGOWD, FRESHMAN By far, my favorite thing about Duke lacrosse is my team, including our staff. I have never met a more diverse groups of individuals with totally different personalities that genuinely got along and honestly want to spend such large amounts of time with each other. For 31 girls to all get along is not an easy task. I also think its rare to find an entire team, and I mean every single girl, hanging out by choice on a Saturday that they have off from lacrosse. INSPIRATION RACHEL SANFORD, SENIOR I chose Duke because of the appeal of warmer weather and it was a beautiful gothic campus of higher learning. Walking around campus now I often realize how lucky I am to be playing lacrosse with awesome people and being surrounded by a supportive staff. Duke is a wonderful place and if you come here you will see it for yourself. KIM PASTRANA, REDSHIRT SOPHOMORE I chose to come to Duke for many reasons. The name Duke alone is pretty powerful, but two key aspects really sealed the deal. First was the team...or should I say family of sisters. Our team has so many different personalities that you think they would clash but in acuality everyone is truely a sincere friend and brings something special to the table! The second aspect is the coaching staff. The coaching staff is so committed and dedicated to the team in every aspect. BALANCE ALLIE JOHNSON, JUNIOR It has the perfect academic, athletic and social balance. I felt it provided a way to excel in all three areas without favoring or focusing on only one of these areas. ABIGAIL MEYER, JUNIOR Duke is the perfect balance between work hard, play hard. Duke has provided me with incredible opportunities, lasting friendships, and a healthy environment in which to grow from a high school student to an adult ready to face the real world. CAROLINE CRYER, JUNIOR I love how Duke lacrosse is such a family. The players and coaches together are so dedicated to taking the next step with this program, while building this great foundation along the way. aspect. 16 Three Final Four traight NCAA Appear

19 The Duke Lacrosse Experience LEIGH JESTER, SENIOR The combination of both the outstanding academics and athletics is what separates Duke from the rest. Not only do the student-athletes get a tremendous amount of support from their coaches, but also from their professors. The support staff both academically and athletically is one of my favorite aspects of Duke. From working with the world-renowned faculty in th K-Lab to individual academic planning, it just can t get any better. LIZA BRAUN, SOPHOMORE I chose Duke because of its reputation for academic and athletic excellence. I felt Duke student-athletes had the perfect combination of dedication towards their education while accomplishing their goals on the field. EXCELLENCE JESSICA MCBRIDE, SOPHOMORE I really like the size of the student body and plethora of academic opportunities. The support system from other students, professors, coaches, teammates and administrators creates an environment that strives for both academic and athletic excellence. KIM IMBESI, SOPHOMORE I chose to come to Duke because it is one of the best mixtures of academic and athletic excellence. The combination of receiving an amazing education and being a part of a wonderful and successful lacrosse team equates to a fun, yet challenging four-year experience. COMMITMENT LINDSAY GILBRIDE, FRESHMAN My experience at Duke has been amazing so far in that it has taught me to test my limits and to push myself in order to become the best, but most importantly I ve learned that you are never alone because of the constant support of my incredible teammates and that together anything is possible. DANIELLE KACHULIS, FRESHMAN When I visited the Duke lacrosse team when I was a junior, I couldn t believe how comfortable I felt with the team and coaches. The staff and players were not only genuine people, but their level of play and desire for excellence and fun were unmatched in any other program I came across. DEDICATION JESSICA ADAM, REDSHIRT SOPHOMORE I like how the entire team is similar in the sense that we all have the same passion for the game and determination to accomplish our goals. At the same time I love how evey person is different and has something different to offer on and off the field. KIM W ATHEY, SENIOR It is rare to be a part of something as special as Duke Women s Lacrosse. There is a lot of love and a strong sense of togetherness because we all know what we re working towards... a national championship. Three Final Four traight NCAA Appear 17

Hills and dales, meandering rivers and streams, several lakes, 26 rare plant species and several rare species of birds and animals can also be found here. With 187,000 residents in the one-city county, Durham is the fourth-largest city in North Carolina. It is ideally located on the large and small scale. Within the immediate area it stands as the pinnacle of the Triangle region of North Carolina, a metropolitan population of 1,000,000 people that includes Chapel Hill to the south and west and Raleigh, the state capital, to the south and east. On a regional level, this area is the primary center of culture, sports, education and government between Washington, D.C., and Atlanta. With excellent sports and cultural activities in the area, Durham is a fun place to be.
