2 President's Report Congratulations to all our Grand Final Winners and Runners Up! Also congratulations to those who made it through to the Final Series for Our Grand Final Day was not so good weather wise but seemed to be a smooth transition to the new format for presentations. One of my concerns was that for the last few grades to receive their trophies there were not many people who had remained to congratulate them. With only 15 or 16 grades at each presentation we should be requesting of our members to re main until the completion of the presentation which is approximately 20 to 30 minutes. Our thanks to Rams who again successfully assisted with the marshalling of teams and preparation of the trophies. A special THANKS to all our Final Series Umpires, Coaches and Managers. Without you all there would not be a Grand Final. Our BHSNA yrs Junior Representative Our thanks to Rams who again successfully assisted with the marshalling of teams and preparation of the trophies. Thanks must also go to all the parents for without you all volunteering for your clubs when allocated duty, BHSNA would not run as smoothly. All your assistance is gratefully appreciated. On Saturday 30 th August the Western Sydney Academy of Sport held their Annual Athlete Dinner and Awards Night. This is a chance for the Academy to recognise athletes from the 2013/2014 Programs and award the top achieving athletes from each program. Held at Castle Hill RSL, the event was attended by approximately 300 athletes, family members, sporting, corporate and government partners. The Academy was fortunate enough to have triple Olympic Swimmer and medallist, Sarah Ryan OAM, as the special MC for the night. Sarah was great at adding her own style to the proceedings, helping to make it an enjoyable night for all. The evening was also highlighted by special guest speaker Nathan Hindmarsh who sat down with Sarah for a one on one chat. Nathan was a thoroughly entertaining guest, keeping the audience laughing through his wit and charm whilst still able to sneak in some great advice and encouragement for the young athletes. Programs of Cycling, Golf, Netball, Triathlon, Hockey, Slalom and Softball were all celebrated on the night with individual Athlete of the Year Awards announced for each. In netball BHSNA s Loren Singleton was announced Netballer of the Year. This accolade has been won by other high profile netballers such as Kim Ravaillion and our very own Kristina Brice. Congratulation Loren! Kristina (left) & Loren have both been recognised as Netballers of the Year from WSAS. BHSNA has been strongly represented during the 2013/2014 WSAS high performance Netball program they include: Madeline Anderson, Emily Chadwick, Ally Dallaway, Taylah Flood, Tayla Fraser, Megan O Keeffe, Olivia Shepherd, Loren Singleton and Brittney Van Gestel. 5 Above: Paige Hadley (left) & Loren share netball stories

6 Coaching Corner With our 2014 season coming to an end most coaches will take some well-deserved rest time over the next few months. Spare a thought for our representative coaches who will begin their planning for the 2015 representative season which begins shortly with junior selections and some pre-christmas training sessions. Then the state league selections are held very soon with coaching appointments also scheduled. The night inter-district competition also commences shortly. It is a very short off season for many coaches!! Thank you to the many coaches in the junior rep program, junior development program, state league, state championships and night interdistrict competitions. We also thank the many club coaches who give so much of their time. This year 39 coaches have received their Foundation accreditation and 7 have received their Development accreditation and BHSNA congratulates all of these coaches. If you have held your foundation accreditation for 1 year or more please consider taking the next step in 2015 and attend a Development course. 8 Umpires Utterings Thank you umpires for your efforts during the final series. You looked the part and you did the job required even though the weather was miserable and wet at times. All finals and grand finals were covered by national badge holders, some for the very first time. Congratulations to you all. The last Level 1 Umpire Education Course for 2014 will be held Thursday, 25 September at Kellyville 9am to 1pm and the cost is $35 for registered members. This course is a MUST for any player, coach or umpire who is interested in learning the RULES OF THE GAME OF NETBALL. This course is recognised nationally and accredited by the Australian Sports Commission. There are still a few vacancies so please bhumpires@gmail.com if you would like to attend. The last Level 1 Umpire Education Course for 2014 will be held Thursday, 25 September at Kellyville Umpiring Awards such as Most Outstanding and Most Improved Junior Umpires along with the Spirit of Umpiring and Committee Service Awards will be presented at the Baulkham Hills Shire Netball Association s Presentation evening to be held Friday 26 September at Castle Hill R.S.L. Tickets may still be purchased and there are spots available on the umpiring table. Please join us. The Night Interdistrict competition offers umpires an opportunity to both watch umpires and skilled players. This is a good opportunity to simply learn by watching others. Join the umpiring committee on the side- 8

9 Media & Promotions Well another netball season has come to an end. Congratulations to our grand finalists and a really big well done to our winners! I love grand final day and although the weather could have behaved better, the atmosphere at the courts all day was just fantastic. This year the Association was supported by our sponsors: Court Craft and The Athlete Foot Rouse Hill, Active Body Physiotherapy and The Sydney Netball Shop, together with our community part- ners Alive 90.5 and The Hills Shire Times. Their support is invaluable to our Association and I look forward to being involved with them again in A really big thank you to our newsletter editor Sonja Anderson!! Without the hard work of Sonja the newsletter wouldn t happen. So what did we get up to in season 2014: The Mother s Day Market; Go Pink for Breast I love grand final day and although the weather could have behaved better, the atmosphere at the courts all day was just fantastic. Cancer; The Kids Cancer Project and Cure our Kids Crazy Sock Day. Thank you for your generous support of our charity days, your donation really do make a difference for these volunteer organisations. If you would like to be involved in the media, promotion or sponsorship side of our Association nominations are now open for the Media & Promotion Officer and Committee. 10 I CAN TELL WHAT NETBALL POSITION YOU PLAYED JUST BY LOOKING AT YOU The following article is one that has been included just for fun. It was an article written by Ali Benton and was published in May of this year. I hope you enjoy reading this. Shocked when I told her, she screeched How on earth did you know that? I discovered my new skill on a balmy Summer afternoon. My friend Amelia circulates a party like a pool cleaner on peptides She s in all the right places at all the right times. Small in stature. Often the last to leave. And the best handbag in the universe. In netball parlance Amelia is a classic Wing Attack. Feeling the sun s rays beat down on my netball calves, I reaiised I was different, I realised I was special, I realised that I had a power like no other: just by knowing someone, I could name the netball position they played as a child. After calling it with Amelia I decided to test my powers on my wider friendship circle....the overachieving extrovert is a Goal Attack; Sarah the admin woman at work who guards the stationary cupboard with a dead- eyed dagger stare is a Goal Defence What did I play? What about me? You haven t done me yet? Can you guess mine? You ll never guess what I played! Bombarded on Facebook by dozens of friends, my new sixth sense began to flow out of me like the juice of a half time orange quarter. I was in control. As in control as my old netball coach (without the parachute material tracksuit, the tobacco stained fingers and the spit covered whistle). I took a deep breath, and began to give my friends the answers they were looking for. Nikki, the overachieving extrovert is a Goal Attack; Sarah the admin woman at work who guards the stationary cupboard with a dead- eyed dagger stare is a Goal Defence; Jackie, the loner with a sense of existential angst is a Goal Keeper; Anna the complicated anal retentive smacks of Goal Shooter; and Mel, the emotionally well balanced allrounder had Centre written all over her. My girlfriend s sister exclaimed guess my position!. I felt like Jesus turning water into wine. You I told her, are a Wing Attack. Boom! My girlfriend threw me a stare and asked How come you guessed my sister and not me? My hit rate was around 90%. My friends were thrilled that I guessed what letters they once wore on their netball bib. Somehow it brought us closer. It was as if I had reached into their childhood and ripped the Velcro off their pleated skirt, and like a sweaty pair of scungies, my powers just hung there in the air, suspended in motion. I tested my skills on dozens of friends over a period of weeks. Goal after goal. I had indeed become the netball soothsayer. 10

11 I CAN TELL WHAT NETBALL POSITION YOU PLAYED JUST BY LOOKING AT YOU CONT. Who cares? I hear you saying. Who cares that you played two years of netball in the early 80s at the Canoon Road netball courts? Who cares that two years of prancing round the netball court in a red tunic gave you a psychic gift thirty years later? I concur. There is an element of truth to your outrage. I m not suggesting I m a Rhodes scholar or a rocket scientist. But take a step back, pivot, fake pass and hear me out. Being a netball soothsayer has enabled me to navigate both my professional and personal life with relative success. As a Warrawee Wildcat Wing Attack circa 1983 I ve learnt never to date a Goal Defence. I know that Centres are more often than not my soul mates and Goal Shooters usually break my heart. If my boss is a Wing Defence I know I ll need to upwardly manage but if they re a Centre my working life will be a dream. If I have a one night stand with a Goal Attack, let s just say I won t be needing any defensive moves around the circle. I m not suggesting I m a Rhodes scholar or a rocket scientist. But take a step back, pivot, fake pass and hear me out Now before you accuse me of being the Uri Geller or the Jackie Gillies of the netball world, I m prepared to go the full four quarters on this one. In honour of my soothsaying netball abilities here s my captain s call on six high profile Australian women: Mining Magnate Gina Rinehart: All elbows. Definitely a Goal Defence. Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs Tanya Plibersek: that cool sense of authority shouts Goal Attack. TV presenter Samantha Armytage: I cannot explain why but I can just hear the words...wing Attack. Cate Blanchett: anyone who can spend years managing the STC is definitely a Goal Shooter. Former NSW Premier Kristina Keneally: N/A played basketball Therese Rein: made up for her lack of sporting prowess by becoming a powerhouse in business. Yep. Wing Defence. I ll leave it to these six women to speak for themselves. No doubt when they read this serious piece of peer reviewed work they ll release media statements outlining their sporting history. So next time you re concerned about how a friendship is going, whether you re getting on with your Mum or how to deal with your boss, don t consult a GP, a shrink or a social worker just ask yourself what position is this person playing? Netball my friends, is a way of seeing. Ali Benton is a Wing Attack and Centre. She left the Netball court in 1985 for the Softball field. In her other life she is a producer on ABC News 24 s The Drum. 11
