ABOUT THE BRAVES is 10-4 during the campaign with a 0-1 record in MVC play after falling in its opener at Drake, 66-64, on Thursday. Sophomore Darrell Brown leads the Braves with 13.6 points and 3.8 assists per game. A balanced team with eight players averaging at least five points, Nate Kennell and Donte Thomas are second and third on BU in scoring with 8.9 and 8.6 points, respectively. Freshman Elijah Childs leads with 6.4 rebounds, while Thomas is second at 5.8. BU is averaging 68.7 points, shooting 43.5 percent from the floor and 39.2 percent from 3-point range. The strength of the team so far is on defense where BU features the nation s 12th-ranked unit, allowing only 61.3 points per game, 38.0 percent of field goals and 29.6 percent from 3-point range. SERIES HISTORY In 59 all-time meetings between the Braves and Panthers, Northern Iowa holds a slight edge in the series. The series has largely been controlled by the home team with the schools combining to win 38-of-54 matchups as the host. Last season, both schools won on their own court. posted a win in January to end a five-game losing streak in the series before a setback at UNI in February. Luuk van Bree led the Braves versus the Panthers last year, posting 14.0 points on 61.1 percent shooting (5-9 from 3-point range). ABOUT THE PANTHERS Northern Iowa is 8-5 this season with a 0-1 record in Missouri Valley Conference action. The Panthers have lost their last three games, falling in their final two non-conference games to Iowa State and Xavier before losing to Southern Illinois on Thursday in the Valley opener. Bennett Koch has keyed the team s success so far, leading UNI with 14.3 points to go with 7.5 rebounds per game. Klint Carlson and Juwan McCloud also chip in 9.8 points per game apiece, while McCloud leads the team with 2.3 assists per game. Freshman Tywhon Pickford leads the Panthers with 8.9 rebounds per game. Just like the Braves, UNI has relied on its defense as it allows only 60.2 points per game, while scoring 67.3 points on the offensive end. CARVER STREAKING puts its undefeated home record on the line against Northern Iowa on Sunday as the Braves have opened the season a perfect 6-0 at Carver Arena. In fact, the Braves secured their first unblemished home mark in non-conference play for the first time since the season. Overall, has won its last eight home games dating back to last season, its longest winning streak at Carver Arena since a 15-game run in BATTLE OF NCAA S TOP-15 DEFENSES Don t expect a lot of points in Sunday s game as the matchup features two of the nation s best defensive units. Northern Iowa enters the game with the NCAA s sixth-ranked unit allowing 60.2 points per game while the Braves rank 12th at 61.3 points. The Braves also place in the top 20 in both field goal percentage defense (15th at 37.6%) and 3-point defense (20th at 29.1%). WHAT CAN BROWN DO FOR YOU? Sophomore Darrell Brown has continued to shine as the Braves top offensive threat, whether he is the team s go-to scorer or setting up others. Brown leads BU with 13.6 points and 3.8 assists per game during the season. Brown has scored in double figures in 13-of-14 games this year, while also leading the team in assists or tied for the team lead 11 times. The sophomore is one of only two players in the MVC to lead his team in both scoring and assists (Indiana State s Jordan Barnes is the other). Brown has scored in double figures in each of the last eight games the longest streak by a Brave since Walt Lemon had a 20-game run in and the second-longest active streak in the MVC (Illinois State s Phil Fayne has a 12-game run). FRONT RUNNERS The first half has been key for the Braves this season and has largely determined BU outcomes. In its 10 wins, has outscored opponents by 10.9 points in the first and led at the intermission of every game, going 10-1 with the halftime edge. However, is 0-3 this year when trailing or tied at the half and in its four losses, BU has been outscored by 7.0 points in the opening stanza. One point will be awarded for victories in men s or women s basketball games between, Illinois State, Loyola and Southern Illinois. The series officially begins on Sunday when the Braves women s basketball team plays at Illinois State at 11 a.m. THE REBOUNDING EDGE Rebounding has been one of the largest keys for the Braves since the arrival of Coach Wardle. Since the beginning of the season, BU has won 75.0 percent of its games (21-7) when it outrebounds its opponent. However, on the reverse end, has won just 17.1 percent of its games when failing to win the battle on the glass (7-34). The good news for the Braves is they have held the rebounding edge in 11-of-14 games this season, posting a 9-2 record with more rebounds and a 1-2 mark in its three games with less. CRASHING THE GLASS IN The Braves are enjoying a huge jump in rebounding numbers this year, leading to its 10-4 record. has increased its national ranking from last year by at least 100 spots in offensive rebounds, rebounding margin and rebounds per game. BU is 17-3 during the last two seasons when it records 12 or more assists, including 8-1 this year. However, is just 6-21 over the two years when it registers 11 or fewer assists with a 2-3 record during the campaign. Overall, the Braves are averaging 14.1 assists this season, an increase of 2.7 from the 11.4 averaged last year. 20-PLUS ASSISTS As of late, the Braves haven t stopped at 12 assists and have made 20 their goal. has already reached the mark in four games this year. Dating back to least year, BU has recorded at least 20 assists in six of its last 19 games after not doing so once in the previous WIN NON-CONFERENCE The Braves are hoping that their 10-win nonconference season continues during MVC play. won 10 games against non-league foes for the first time since and just the fifth time in the last 50 seasons (also in , and ). Overall, won 10 non-league games for the 18th time in 67 years as a member of the MVC (did so in 13 of its first 15 years in the league). In the previous 17 times BU won at least 10 nonconference games, the Braves averaged an MVC placement of 2.4 with 11 top-two finishes (only in did finish worse than fourth). NON-CONFERENCE COMPARISON has seen a steady rise in its performance under the three years with Coach Wardle. With the nation s youngest team in , BU was 2-11 before a 5-8 non-conference mark last year with the NCAA s fourth-youngest squad. The biggest difference from last year (other than wins) is an improved scoring defense of 9.5 points. Only once has a Brave scored 20 points in a game this season (Darrell Brown vs. Weber State), while nine of the 11 active scholarship players have tallied at least 10 points in a game. While Darrell Brown and Nate Kennell lead BU in scoring, six of the next seven highest scoring Braves are shooting at least 48 percent making a number of capable players to lead the BU offense. BENCH PRODUCTION With such a high number of capable scorers, it doesn t matter if you start or not at. BU s bench have averaged 27.4 of the team s 68.7 points this season, while shooting higher from the floor and 3-pointers. The reserves have outscored the starters in 4-of- 14 games this year with the team s leader in points also coming off the bench in five contests. BRADLEY TEAM NOTES HEAD COACH BRIAN WARDLE Named the 14th head coach in men s basketball history on March 28, In two years on the sideline, Wardle has rebuilt the foundation for the program. One year after completely overhauling the roster and featuring the youngest team in the nation, ranked among the top 25 improved teams in the country by increasing its win total by eight victories, while posting its best finish in the MVC in seven years. Prior to joining the Braves, Wardle compiled a (.594) overall record in his five seasons at Green Bay, which culminated with backto-back 24-win seasons and three straight postseason appearances and included the Horizon League regular-season title. Wardle was the youngest head coach in NCAA Division I basketball when he took over the Green Bay program in 2010 at age 30 and he is third among all NCAA Division I head coaches younger than 40 with 123 career victories. Prior to taking over as head coach at Green Bay, Wardle spent the previous five seasons ( ) as a Phoenix assistant and two years ( ) as Director of Ops at Marquette. As a player, Wardle scored 1,690 career points at Marquette, still good for seventh on the school s career scoring list. Led the Golden Eagles in scoring in each of his final three seasons ( ). BU currently ranks 47th nationally with a 3-point percentage of 39.2 a 3.6 percent improvement. In Coach Wardle s first season, averaged 28.0 percent before a 7.6 percent increase last year that ranked as the eighth-largest nationally. NCAA 3-Pt Ranks Point Pct NCAA Rank 343rd 142nd 47th VAN BREE LEADS 3-POINT SURGE Junior Luuk van Bree has highlighted the Braves 3-point turnaround. A career 34.6 percent shooter from beyond the arc entering the year, van Bree has connected on 53.6 percent of his attempts this year. The junior leads all players in the MVC by making 53.6 percent of his triples this year. After battling some adversity earlier in the year, van Bree has taken charge as of late. In his last six games, he is averaging 9.7 points on 55.3 percent shooting and 60.0 percent from distance. Brown registered his first collegiate doubledouble with 11 points and 10 assists on Saturday. The sophomore is the first Brave with a pointsassists double-double since Sam Maniscalco had 19 points and 10 assists in a win against Wichita State on Feb. 23, CHARITY NEEDED Another key for the Braves this season has been an ability to get to the charity stripe. In its 10 wins, is averaging 21.9 free throw attempts with 14.5 makes per win. However, the Braves are averaging just 14.5 trips to the charity stripes in losses with 9.8 makes per game. is just 3-4 this year with 13 or fewer made free throws in a game. Last season, averaged 18.5 made free throws in victories, while in losses, the Braves made 12.2 per game. CHILDS AMONG THE NATION S BEST Freshman Elijah Childs has been a key figure in the Braves turnaround on the glass. Childs leads the Braves with 6.4 rebounds per game, including 2.4 on the offensive glass. In fact, Childs ranks 27th nationally by collecting 15.4 percent of BU s misses when he s on the court. Overall, Childs is third in the MVC in offensive rebounds per game (168th in NCAA) and seventh in total rebounds. EARLY RISER Elijah Childs dominance on the boards show just how much of an impact he is having as a rookie. Childs is averaging 7.9 points and 6.4 rebounds in just 18 minutes this year ranking fourth among MVC rookies in points and third in rebounds. Childs has a chance to join elite company as only three BU freshmen have ever led the team in rebounds in school history. Additionally, Childs became the first BU freshman to record a double-double in one of his first three games since Patrick O Bryant in Then against Missouri S&T, Childs made all seven of his shots in a 14-point, eight-rebound game. He is the first Brave to shoot 100 percent and make at least seven shots in a game since Andrew Warren on Nov. 18, A LEADER IN KENNELL Sophomore Nate Kennell has taken a step forward in his second season with the Braves this season. Kennell led the team in scoring three times in the first six games of the year. As a rookie, Kennell did not once finish with the team-high in points. Overall, Kennell is second on BU with 8.9 points per game this year after averaging 5.7 last season. 50/20 REBOUNDS s strength on the glass was showcased most in back-to-back games against Missouri S&T and Georgia Southern. The Braves collected at least 50 rebounds in each game, marking the first back-to-back 50-rebound contests since also gathered at least 20 offensive rebounds in two-straight contests for the first time since the campaign. Teams are averaging 18.3 seconds per possession against the Braves this year, the 11th-longest in the country and well above the national average of 17.1 seconds per possessions. For comparisons, the Braves are averaging 17.1 seconds on their offensive possessions this year. FINDING NEW WAYS TO WIN The Braves no longer need to rely on superior shooting to win games. Last season, was 13-3 with a higher shooting percentage than its opponent but 0-17 when being outshot. During the campaign, however, BU is already 2-3 when its opponents outshoots. BU is one of just four schools in the country to return at least 90 percent of its points, rebounds and assists this year, joining preseason No. 8 Wichita State, No. 11 Southern Cal and Colgate. Overall, is just one of 16 schools nationally returning at least 70 percent of its points, rebounds and assists from last year. STILL YOUNG EXPERIENCE While the Braves return nearly every piece from last year, is still a very young team in ranks 256th nationally (of 351 schools) in basketball experience with 1.43 average years, while placing ninth in the MVC. BUILDING WITH FRESHMAN TALENT In the two years under coach Brian Wardle, has rebuilt its roster with talented freshmen. In fact, has had four players collect MVC All-Freshman Team honors over the past two years double the next highest total (Missouri State and Wichita State both had two selections). Brown is the only underclassmen on the two combined teams, which also features nine seniors and two juniors. Overall, was slated to finish seventh in the annual MVC preseason poll. BROWN LOOKS FOR ROOKIE REPEAT It didn t take long for Darrell Brown to have an impact with the program and is in elite company with the BU best. Brown led the Braves with 12.6 points per game, the highest scoring true freshman in the MVC since Doug McDermott in Overall, Brown s 402 total points are the thirdmost by a freshman in history BU Freshman Scorers Year Points 1. ALL IN THE FAMILY The Braves have a number of family connections to NBA and college greats. Sophomore Darrell Brown is the godson of former NBA All-Star, Penny Hardaway. Freshman Ryan Stipanovich is the nephew of Steve Stipanovich a former All-American at Missouri and the No. 2 pick in the 1983 NBA Draft. Ryan s sister, Sydney, played for Penn from 2013 to 2017 and was the 2016 Ivy League Player of the Year, while his brother, Matt, was a member of the water polo team Marymount from 2010 to Sophomore Nate Kennell is the cousin of Aaron Zobrist, who played for the Braves from 1993 to 1997 and is in the school s Hall of Fame. ACADEMIC SUCCESS The Basketball team s cumulative grade point average has remained better than 3.0 for each of the last 12 consecutive semesters. The Braves posted a 3.23 semester GPA during the 2016 spring semester, raising the team s cumulative GPA to a program-record Following the season, Donte Thomas and Luuk van Bree were both honored as secondteam MVC Scholar-Athletes.
