Notre Dame St. Joseph s HS The Candidate After an outstanding junior season in which he was the 12th-leading scorer in the nation, UCSB guard Alex Harris will enter his senior season as a legitimate honors candidate. One of the best offensive players on the West Coast, Harris stepped-up his game in virtually every category last year and whether his scoring in can match its level, he seems poised to have an even greater overall impact on Gaucho fortunes. First Things First As a junior, Harris averaged 21.1 points per game, earning him the Big West scoring championship. Harris became the first UCSB player to win the league scoring title since the season when Raymond Tutt did so. Following the year, Harris was named First Team All-Big West and Second Team All-District by the National Association of Basketball Coaches. A Small Step For Man, A Giant Step For Gauchokind As a sophomore in , Harris averaged 8.3 points per game. His scoring average of 21.1 points per game was an increase of 12.8 points per game, the largest jump from one season to the next of any Gaucho on record. Harris entered his junior season having scored 458 points in his first two seasons, a total of 58 games and 1,506 minutes. In, he played in all 29 games, a total of 1,018 minutes and he scored 611 points. A Quick Start As a junior, Harris didn t waste any time sprinting out of the starting blocks. After averaging more than 30 points per game in a pair of exhibition games, he scored 25 in the season-opener against San Jose State, leading UCSB to a come-from-behind win. His performance against the Spartans earned him Big West Player of the Week honors, but Harris didn t stop there. He scored 20 or more in the first six games of the season, going for 25 or more three times. In his first two seasons, a total of 58 games, Harris never scored 20 or more points in a single outing. A Faster Finish In his first two seasons at UCSB, Harris struggled as the seasons wound to their respective conclusions. As a junior, he didn t just end the season strongly, he ended it with the best basketball of his career. Harris scored 22 or more in each of the last six games of the season. Over the final six, he averaged 26.0 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. He made 48-of-97 shots overall, 49.5%, and 23-of-36 from three-point range, 63.9%. In game two of the final six-game stretch, at Cal State Fullerton, Harris scored a career-high 35 points, the most scored by a Gaucho in 10 years. TONY MASTRES Rank And File Season In, Harris had an offensive season that ranks among the best in UCSB annals. He became just the third player in school history to eclipse 600 points and his 611 ranks third all-time. His 21.1 points per game also ranks third. In addition, Harris transformed himself from a very average three-point shooter into one of the finest in school history. His 71 three-pointers were the fourth most for a Gaucho and his percentage of 45.8% was second only to Raymond Tutt s 46.6%. Finally, Harris made 158 free throws on the year, the second most ever, and he became just the second Gaucho to attempt 200 or more free throws in a single season, finishing with 201.

4 After a tremendous junior season in, Alex Harris will be an All-America candidate as a senior in He will again be inked in as one of the starters at a wing spot, and should carry a large portion of UCSB s offensive load Added strength should help Harris improve his all-around game in his final season Harris will enter the season with a career total of 1,069 points, the 18th most in school history. Harris emergence as a junior in was stunning After averaging 7.9 points and 3.2 rebounds per game in his first two seasons, Harris exploded as a junior, leading the Big West in scoring at 21.1 points per game and also contributing 4.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists He was named First Team All-Big West and Second Team All-District 15 by the National Association of Basketball Coaches He was a two-time Big 5 18 GAUCHO BIOGRAPHIES 14 >> ivanelliott Forward Senior San Francisco, Calif. West Valley College Mr. Energy Ivan Elliott is UCSB s Mr. Energy. If there is a rebound to be had, he will go for it. If there is a loose ball to be recovered, he will dive for it. If there is a charge to be taken, he will take it. Whether he is in the starting lineup or not, Elliott will be an important part of the Gauchos success in. Unlike the season when he played primarily at the five spot, the native San Franciscan is projected to play at the four and the five spots this season. The Rebounding Leader Sort Of In, Elliott finished second on the team in rebounding at 6.0 per game. In terms of rebounds per minutes played however, he actually led the team. Elliott collected 174 total rebounds in 650 minutes of action, while Chris Devine had 190 in 916 minutes. His average of 10.7 rebounds per 40 minutes was more than two rebounds higher than Devine s 8.4 per 40 minutes. Furthermore, Elliott was the Gauchos leading rebounder in Big West play when he averaged 6.8 per game and his five double-figure rebounding performances tied Devine for team-high honors in that category. Yeah, You Actually Can Go Home Again With apologies to Thomas Wolfe, you actually can go home again. At least Elliott was able to. Playing right around the corner from where he went to high school in San Francisco, he had one of the best games of his junior season. A graduate of Wallenberg, Elliott s performance at the University of San Francisco was instrumental in a UCSB victory. In the game, he finished with 13 points, eight rebounds, one assist, one blocked shot and one steal. He made all six of his field goal attempts overall, including the first threepointer of his career. Elliott, however, was not perfect in the game against the Dons. He did miss both of his free throw attempts. A Double-Double Of His Own In UCSB had two players record double-figures in points and rebounds in the same game. Chris Devine turned the trick a team-leading five times. The only other double-double fashioned by a Gaucho in was done by Elliott. In the team s first Big West game of the year, a win over UC Riverside, he went 6-of-9 from the field for 12 points and pulled-in a team-high 10 rebounds. In the Gauchos next game, a home win against Cal State Fullerton, Elliott came within an eyelash of his second consecutive doubledouble as he finished with 13 points and nine rebounds. TONY MASTRES Playing The Field, But Nothing Is Free Elliott had one of those Shaq-like seasons in. He finished the year shooting 56.0% from the field and 52.4% from the free throw line. Elliott s percentages finished the year like two trains passing in the night. After starting the season by making six free throws in a row, he made just 16 of his final 36, 44.4%. On the other hand, after making just nine of his first 25 field goal attempts, 36.0%, Elliott completed the year by making 66 of 109, 60.6%. At one point, during a five game stretch in December, he made 22 of 26 shots, 84.6%.

6 Whether he starts or comes off of the bench, senior forward Ivan Elliott will be an important part of UCSB s fortunes in A versatile and athletic player, Elliott will again be one of the team s most important rebounders and interior defenders Consistently plays as hard as any Gaucho. In July, the NCAA awarded Devine a sixth year of eligibility, making the second straight year in which he will be listed as a junior. The Eagle River, Alaska native missed all of the and seasons due to injuries. He played his first season in as a sophomore, but UCSB petitioned for the sixth year and it was awarded. Honorific While Devine sat out his first two years at UCSB, he has made the most of his two years of activity. In, he was selected to the Big West s Preseason All-Conference Team and then, following the season, he was chosen Second Team All-Big West for the second straight year. In being named all-league twice in a row, Devine became the first Gaucho to do so in his first two years at the school since Branduinn Fullove earned honorable mention and second team honors in his first two seasons, and He is also the first player to be named first or second team all-conference in his first two campaigns since Raymond Tutt in and A Starting Staple In his first two seasons, Devine has been the one sure thing in UCSB s starting lineup. In , he was the only player on the team to start all 29 games. In, he joined Alex Harris in starting all 29 contests. He will enter his junior season having played in and started 58 consecutive games. Double The Fun Devine had a team-high five double-doubles in. He recorded double-figures in points and rebounds in games against Pepperdine, San Francisco, Vanguard, UC Irvine and UC Davis. Devine s doubledoubles were a very good measure of UCSB success. In the five games in which he went for double-figures in points and rebounds, the Gauchos were a perfect 5-0, including 4-0 when he had a double-double on the road. Devine had four double-doubles in , three on the road. In fact, over two seasons, when he has a double-double away from home, the Gauchos are 6-1. A Right, A Left In, Devine combined with teammate Alex Harris to form the most potent one-two scoring punch in UCSB history. For his part, Devine scored 408 points in his 29 games, an average of 14.1 per outing. Combined with Harris 611 points, the duo tallied a total of 1,019, five more than the previous top combo, Lucius Davis and Idris Jones, combined for in Harris and Devine s combined average of 35.2 points per game was also a school record. TONY MASTRES On Second Thought, That Was A Great Freshman Season When the NCAA awarded Devine a sixth year of eligibility, it also deemed that his first year, , counted as his freshman season. That being the case, a second look at his first year reveals one of the best freshman seasons in school history. In , Devine scored 355 points, a total that moves him into first on UCSB s all-time freshman list, 21 points better than Carrick DeHart. In addition, Devine now ranks high on the freshman lists in scoring average (tied for second), rebounds (third), field goals (second), field goal percentage (second), free throws (second), free throw percentage (10th) and steals (third).

8 Forward Chris Devine was granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA during the summer and is officially listed as a junior for the second consecutive year Devine, a two-time Second Team All-Big West player, will once again be a workhorse in the frontcourt for UCSB He has started all 58 games in his first two seasons and, barring injury, he should be a staple as the starter at the four spot in. Devine earned Second Team All-Big West honors for the second straight season after averaging 14.1 points and a team-high 6.6 rebounds in Was also named Big West Player of the Week once As was the case his first season, Devine was in UCSB s starting lineup for every game as a sophomore He joined Harris as the only players to start all 29 games Improved his scoring average by nearly two points per game from his sophomore season Scored a career-high 28 points in a double-overtime victory at Pepperdine Devine also had a pair of 25 points games, one in a win at UNLV, an eventual NCAA Sweet 16 De La Salle HS Pointing The Way, Part II Sophomore Justin Joyner is expected to get the nod as UCSB s starting point guard for the second straight year. A selfless playmaker for whom scoring is secondary, Joyner is the perfect facilitator for the Gauchos. Already one of the best floor generals in the Big West Conference, he could also develop into one of the league s best backcourt defenders. Pointing The Way, Part I Joyner became the first UCSB freshman to start at the point guard position since the season when Jacoby Atako took over midway through the year. Joyner, who was just months removed from helping his high school to a California State Division I championship, generally played like an upperclassman. He had one of the best assistto-turnover ratios on the team, passing for a team-leading 81 assists while committing just 54 turnovers, and he became the first freshman to lead the Gauchos in assists in more than five years. Finally, Joyner s 81 assists were the second most ever by a UCSB freshman. Fresh Honor Joyner was named to the Big West s All-Freshman Team following a season in which he averaged 4.8 points, 2.6 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.3 steals per game. He joined James Powell, who was also selected to the team. The Joyner-Powell tandem became the first pair of Gauchos to make the All-Freshman Team since Branduinn Fullove and Nick Jones were chosen in In fact, it was just the fourth time in school history that two UCSB players were named to the league s All-Freshman Team. A Perfect 10 Last season, in UCSB s late-december game against Big West rival Cal State Fullerton, Joyner did not attempt a field goal and scored just four points in 37 minutes. He was, however, one of the key factors in an important Gaucho win. In the win over the Titans, Joyner became the first UCSB player in eight seasons to record 10 or more assists in a game. He had 10 assists, to go along with five rebounds and a pair of steals, while turning the ball over just three times. The 10 assists by Joyner were the most recorded by a Gaucho freshman in more than 25 years. A Scoring Eruption Joyner averaged 4.8 points per game in and the vast majority of his contributions came in other areas. For one three-game stretch, however, he became a scoring demon and it could not have come at a better time. After losing consecutive home games against UC Davis and Cal Poly, the Gauchos faced the prospect of playing consecutive road games at Cal State Northridge, Pacific and UC Davis. In the game at Northridge, Joyner made 4-of-5 shots overall, including 3-of-4 from three-point range, and scored a career-high 15 points as UCSB snapped its two-game losing streak. In the next game, at Pacific, he hit 3- of-5 shots overall, including 2-of-3 from three-point range, and he scored 10 points as the Gauchos ended a three-game losing streak in Stockton. Joyner completed his scoring binge in the game at Davis when he made 5-of-9 shots, including 2-of-4 from three-point territory, to score 12 points in another win. In the three games, he tallied 37 points, an average of 12.3 points, while making 12-of-19 field goal attempts overall, 63.2%, and 7-of-11 from beyond the three-point stripe, 63.6%. MATT BROWN

11 24 GAUCHO BIOGRAPHIES 42 >> jamespowell Guard Sophomore Pomona, Calif. Glendora HS A Job Of His Own James Powell will likely enter his sophomore season as UCSB s starter at the off-guard position. He entered his freshman season in the same role, but in reality, he was keeping the spot warm for senior Cecil Brown, who was recovering from an injury. When Brown came back, Powell remained in the starting lineup for a while, but after starting the first 16 games of the season, he was moved into a reserve role. Barring injuries in, that same scenario should not repeat itself. An Honorable Freshman As a freshman, Powell averaged 8.8 points, 2.3 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. He also made 38 three-point baskets, the second most on the team. Following the year, Powell, along with Justin Joyner, was selected to the Big West s All-Freshman Team. It marked the first time since , when Branduinn Fullove and Nick Jones were chosen, that UCSB had placed a pair of players on the league s all-freshman team. Mr. Big Shots In his first season, Powell didn t waste any time making his impact felt. He hit a number of key shots in early road wins over UNLV, Pepperdine and Portland. In the win over UNLV, Powell scored 17 points, including a trio of three-point baskets, but it was his 5-for-6 free throw performance in the final minute that put the Gauchos over the top and gave the Runnin Rebels a loss, their only home loss of the season. Powell scored his season-high of 18 points in UCSB s double-overtime win at Pepperdine. In the process, he made all five of his free throws, four of which came in the overtimes. Finally, Powell s 17-point outing, which included a 4-of-5 effort from three-point range, was pivotal in the Gauchos come-from-behind win at Portland. A Game Of Streaks Powell went for quite a rollercoaster ride in his freshman season. In his first seven games, he scored in double-figures six times and averaged 14.7 points per game. He then went a stretch of seven in a row in which he averaged just 4.6 points and never scored more than nine. In fact, he scored 10 in a game at UC Irvine and it was his only double-figure scoring total over a 13-game span. Powell s coaster then went on the upswing to end the season when he scored 10 or more in four straight and five times in the last nine games. No Freshman Jitters In his first season after sitting out the season as a redshirt, Powell certainly wasn t rusty from the free throw line. Not only did he make several key free throws throughout the season, he led the team by making 81.8% from the charity stripe. After starting the season by making just two of his first five free throw attempts, Powell made 52 of his next 59, 88.1%. At one point, he made 23 in a row. A Season Of Lists Statistically, Powell s season put him on several of UCSB s all-time top-10 lists for freshmen. He entered the lists for points (eighth), scoring average (eighth), field goals (10th), free throws (seventh), free throw percentage (second), three-point field goals (second), three-point field goal percentage (seventh), assists (seventh) and steals (fourth).
