5 SEASON OUTLOOK It s not going out on a limb to say the Oklahoma men s basketball team endured a disappointing season. A Sooners team ranked No. 17 in the preseason AP poll and picked by Big 12 Conference coaches to finish third in the league posted a overall record and tied for ninth place in the Big 12. A combination of injuries (leading scorer Willie Warren missed 10 games), a reliance on young talent (47 percent of the team s scoring came from freshmen) and a lack of strong veteran leadership all contributed to the falling short of expectations. Considering head coach Jeff Capel lost his top four scorers from that team, returns just three players who averaged more than 2.0 minutes per game and welcomes nine newcomers, preseason prognosticators will not have OU pegged nearly as high for as they did last year. Backcourt Carl Blair (6-2, 214, So., Guard) Cameron Clark (6-6, 195, Fr., G/F) Cade Davis (6-5, 206, Sr., Guard) T.J. Franklin (5-11, 174, Jr., Guard) Calvin Newell (6-1, 201, Fr., Guard) Steven Pledger (6-4, 206, So., Guard) Ryan Randolph (6-4, 201, Fr.-RS, Guard) T.J. Taylor (6-3, 217, Fr., Guard) Frontcourt Abdul Ahmed (6-10, 207, Fr., Forward/Center) Andrew Fitzgerald (6-8, 237, So., Forward) Kyle Hardrick (6-8, 219, So., Forward) Tyler Neal (6-7, 209, Fr., Forward) Romero Osby (6-8, 247, Jr., Forward) Nick Thompson (6-9, 212, Jr., Forward) C.J. Washington (6-7, 210, Jr., Forward) For two reasons, Capel can live with that. One, as last year showed, predictions can be worth a hill of beans. But also comforting Capel is the fact that members of his new squad have infused the program with a strong work ethic, upbeat attitude and drive to succeed traits not often displayed by last year s team. Capel said his players learned a valuable lesson since this time a year ago. Winning isn t necessarily a birthright, said Capel, who is starting his fifth year at OU. It s something you have to earn. You earn it by how you work leading up to the season. You can t just turn it on when the games start. It begins with your summer preparation mentally and physically. That s when you start to form your team. I think because of how we performed last season, our returning players have a hunger. They have a desire to not let that happen again. I think maybe they ve worked harder (since the end of last season) than they ve ever worked. Capel said he hopes that self-realization and the resulting disciplined off-season approach will yield in-season success. There s been a different energy around here and I m excited about it, said Capel. I m excited to see what we become. We still have expectations. We want to become the best team we can be hopefully vie for one of the top spots in the Big 12 and make the NCAA Tournament. BACKCOURT The player charged with the large task of leading OU s band of youngsters is lone senior Cade Davis. The 6-5, 206-pound shooting guard made big strides last year after seeing moderate court time his first two seasons. As a junior, the western Oklahoma product started 27 games and averaged 9.9 points, 3.9 rebounds and a team-high 1.5 steals per contest. He was especially productive down the stretch, making 31 3-pointers and averaging 12.5 points over the season s final 12 games. Capel will demand a lot from Davis this season. Not all of the expectations are court related. will follow him. He has guys who will work, will get in here and do extra stuff, who want to be a part of it. He has to work at a very high level every day. He has to get to know all of these guys, know what buttons to push and when to push them. He has to learn how to get the most out of everyone. As far as the tangibles, Capel said Davis had a good junior season but knows he can do more. At times last year he was really, really good. One of the things we re hoping for from Cade is that he can be consistently good. He can be a more consistent shooter. We want him to improve other aspects of his game like ball handling, driving the ball more off of shot fakes and getting to the foul line. He s going to have to rebound at a high level for us this year. We really hope he can have a great senior season. Joining Davis as the only other returning guard with significant game experience is sophomore shooter Steven Pledger. Like Davis, Pledger can get incredibly hot from behind the 3-point line. At times last year, the 6-4, 206-pounder was equally as cold. He scored 21 points in the season opener by going 4-for-5 from long range, and four games later against Houston scored 20 points in the first half. He was 19-for-40 (.475) on 3-point attempts over the first six outings, but over the next 14 games was 9-for-53 (.170). Pledger, from Chesapeake, Va., rebounded nicely at the end of the season by draining nine treys over the final two games. He finished the year with averages of 6.2 points and 1.5 boards in 18.9 minutes a contest. I don t know if I ve seen any freshman ever shoot it like he did to start his career, remarked Capel. And then he went through a spell where he couldn t make shots. Down the stretch I thought he got his confidence back and had some really good moments for us late in the year. Capel likes what Pledger s done since the end of last season. He s really worked hard on his body. He was around 220 or 225 last year and is down to about 210 now. We d like to get him down to between 205 and 210. Hopefully he can become more consistent with his shooting, can get better at using pump fakes and can improve his ball handling and defense. A candidate to run the point, Carl Blair is an OU newcomer but has a year of Division I experience. The 6-2, 214-pounder from Houston, Texas, transferred from the University of New Orleans where he averaged 9.2 points, 4.4 boards and 3.7 assists last year as a freshman. He started in 29 games and over the last eight outings upped his averages to 13.8 points and 4.6 assists. Blair was one of nine players in the country last year to record a triple-double (13 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists in a Dec. 5 win over Houston Baptist). We need his leadership, said Capel. We need him to be 100 percent invested in our team and to be the leader of our team. Cade has a tremendous opportunity because I think he has guys who Since UNO has begun the process of reclassifying to Division III status, Blair will be allowed to play at OU without sitting out a year. That s great news for Capel. Getting Carl Blair was really important for us because he brings the experience of playing college basketball. The level will be different, but the fact he was a Division I player last year and played against high-major teams won t be new to him. Senior and leading returning scorer and rebounder Cade Davis

6 SEASON OUTLOOK Top-100 national high school recruits Cameron Clark (left) and T.J. Taylor Added Capel, Usually, you have peaks and valleys as a freshman. But Carl averaged more points in conference play than he did in pre-conference play. His last 10 games, his numbers went up even more. That s a good sign. He wants to work and will play with a chip on his shoulder. Our guys love playing with him. He s been one of our hardest workers this summer from what our guys tell me. The most ballyhooed member of OU s 2010 recruiting class is 6-6, 195-pound wing Cameron Clark. Ranked as the nation s No. 32 recruit by ESPN, No. 34 by Rivals.com and No. 39 by Scout.com, the Texas native was a two-time first-team all-state pick and last year averaged 23.7 points, 9.0 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.7 steals. Capel says Clark has the size, athletic ability and work ethic to make an immediate impact. We identified Cameron very early in the recruiting process as a guy we had to have. He will be as athletic as anyone in our league at the wing spot. He also brings size and very good talent to the position. He comes from a great family and I think he will really embrace the culture of work here. He wants to be good and I don t think he ll be afraid of the work that it takes to achieve that. Another freshman rated as one of last year s top-100 high school seniors is combo guard T.J. Taylor. At 6-3 and 217 pounds, the left-handed Taylor can do a little bit of everything. He thrived at Denison (Texas) High School, finishing his four-year varsity career with averages of 23.5 points, 7.8 rebounds and 5.8 assists. The three-time all-state selection was named MVP of the 2010 Texas High School Coaches Association All-Star Game and should vie for immediate playing time. T.J. is very talented. I think he can provide some versatility for us. Like so many of our guys, he feels like he has a lot to prove. He didn t get a chance to play summer basketball a year ago because he broke his ankle. He didn t get to go out on the (AAU) circuit, and so a lot of people haven t seen him. We think he s talented; think he has a toughness and a willingness to work and compete. That s going to serve him well in helping him become a really good college basketball player. Perhaps the most prolific scorer among OU s newcomers is fellow combo guard Calvin Newell. The 6-1, 201-pounder hails from Philadelphia, Pa., and spent last year in prep school in Charlotte, N.C. There he averaged 26.1 points and 7.0 assists. As a high school senior in Pennsylvania, Newell earned first-team all-state honors after averaging 29.4 points and leading his squad to its first state playoffs appearance in nine years. Capel said he loves Newell s grit. Calvin is a scoring guard, started the OU head coach. He can really score the ball. I love him because I think he has a huge chip on his shoulder, in a good way. I think he can become a very good defensive player. He can score in a lot of different ways. He s athletic, he s strong, he can shoot it. He has really good speed. I love his Philly toughness. He s seen a lot, has endured a lot of adversity and he s come out on top. We think he can help us and will provide some quality depth in the backcourt. Completing the backcourt is a pair of walk-ons in junior T.J. Franklin and redshirt freshman Ryan Randolph. Franklin is a lively 5-11, 174-pound point guard who goes all out each day in practice. He appeared in 15 of OU s 31 games last year, averaging 1.7 minutes. Franklin has made considerable improvement since stepping on campus two years ago and his work ethic is the chief reason. He could be on the verge of playing a more pivotal role on game days. Said Capel, Our guys respect T.J. so much because of how hard he works. He s been a great practice player for us. At times late last year we had the confidence to put him in the game. There may be situations this year that he ll have to play for us. We feel confident he can come in and give us quality minutes. Randolph, who starred on the court and on the football field in high school (he led Bishop McGuinness High School to an Oklahoma state title as a quarterback), is a 6-4, 201-pound wing who decided to redshirt last year to help him adapt to the collegiate level. Ryan felt like that would be the best thing for him so he could really work in practice and get used to the speed of the game, explained Capel. He s been great to have on our team for so many different reasons. He s a great kid, a competitive kid. We think a year of practicing against our guys has helped him become a better basketball player. FRONTCOURT While OU s backcourt is comprised of mostly inexperienced talent, the frontcourt is even less seasoned with the return of just one big man who played regular minutes last year. Rare is the occasion that a sophomore who played less than 20 minutes per game as a freshman is looked upon as one of his team s leaders. But that s exactly the spot in which forward Andrew Fitzgerald finds himself entering Fitzgerald, who stands 6-8 and was a top-75 national recruit out of prep school, averaged 4.8 points and 2.0 rebounds while shooting.511 from the floor in 15.7 minutes a contest for the Sooners last year. The modest numbers don t reflect the improvement he made as the season wore on he averaged 13.0 points over a three-game February stretch that included a game at No. 1 Kansas in which he recorded career highs of 16 points and six boards or the work he s put in since it ended. Capel explained. I think Andrew has had as good a summer as anyone in our program the last couple of years. He came in last year as a freshman at almost 270 pounds and he s down to 237 now. He s really reshaped his body. He s made a commitment to it with exercise and diet, and he s really worked on his game. If you look at our final 10 games last year, he really played well. You saw improvement. I think that gave him confidence to work even harder in the summer. We re hoping he can make a big jump for us and become one of the better post guys in the Big 12. 7 SEASON OUTLOOK OU s only other returning frontcourt player is fellow sophomore Kyle Hardrick, a 6-8, 219-pounder who played a total of four minutes in three games last year. Like Fitzgerald, Hardrick has focused on reshaping his body. With some question marks surrounding the Sooners front line, he has to be ready if his number is called. Kyle has really worked. He didn t play much as a freshman, but he had a good attitude. He s continued to work to try to improve his game this summer and to put himself in a position to possibly contribute in games. Junior college transfers C.J. Washington and Nick Thompson are two of the five newcomers in the OU frontcourt. Both players, who have two years of eligibility remaining, caught Capel s eye at the national tournament in Hutchinson, Kan., this past spring. Washington, a Stringtown, Okla., native who starred at Connors State Junior College for two years, earned first-team All-America honors last season after averaging 19.3 points and a school-record 13.0 rebounds. He was named the Region II junior college player of the year and led his squad to a 30-4 record. Possessing a nose for the ball, he recorded 25 double-doubles on the season (14 consecutively at one point) and ranked fifth nationally in rebounding. Capel thinks Washington, who is 6-7 and weighs 210 pounds, will find a niche at OU. Our guys have been impressed with C.J. s energy and his rebounding prowess, said the OU head coach. He has a reputation for that coming out of junior college. One of our big goals for C.J. this summer was getting him a little bigger. He s really making progress. We think he can be the ultimate role player for us a very important player who does all the dirty work. Every team needs that. Thompson is a skilled 6-9, 212-pound forward from the College of Eastern Utah who can dribble, pass and shoot. He helped his squad to a third-place national finish last year by averaging 8.6 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 23.6 minutes per game. He shot.556 from the field and.399 from 3-point range (19-for-49). Capel likes Thompson s blue-collar approach and the fact he can do a little bit of everything. Nick s come in and already put on about eight pounds this summer. He s not afraid of work and wants to be really good. He wants to be a part of something really successful, which is probably just as important as anything. He s used to winning. His teams at Eastern Utah posted the best two records in school history. We think he can provide some versatility for us. He can be a good two-year player. Freshmen Tyler Neal and Abdul ( Abdi ) Ahmed bring depth to the frontcourt, and hopefully bright futures. Neal was Oklahoma s Gatorade Player of the Year last season at Putnam City West High School. He led his team to a school-record 22 wins and its first appearance in the state tournament semifinals since 1977 by averaging 18.2 points, 8.9 rebounds and 1.4 assists. A matchup problem, the 6-7, 209-pound forward can fill it up from outside. He drained 45 treys as a senior and shot.421 from behind the arc. Capel is excited about Neal s versatility. Tyler Neal is talented. I think once he understands how to work at a high level consistently and once he gets acclimated to the speed of the game, his confidence will grow. Once that happens, he has the chance to be a good four-year player for us. He s versatile, he s more athletic than you think, he can shoot the ball from the perim- Sophomore forward Andrew Fitzgerald eter and I think he has a pretty good feel for the game. He comes from a great family, is a really good student and a high-character guy. I think he can help us over his four years here. The 6-10, 207-pound Ahmed, who hails from London, England, is the tallest player on the roster and is relatively new to the sport. He spent at Canarias Basketball Academy in the Canary Islands off the northwest coast of Africa. There he averaged 18.0 points, 12.0 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per game. Admittedly, Capel is unsure of Ahmed s potential impact this season. One thing the OU boss does know is that his young pupil is driven to get better and will add bulk. I m intrigued by Abdi, he said. I haven t really seen him much. In fact, I ve only seen him play on tape. He provides quality depth for us in the post. He plays extremely hard. Since he s been here, I know he s been in the gym a lot on his own. He has to get stronger. That s the first thing. He has to put on weight. One thing with Abdi is he s a very receptive learner. He wants to work, he wants to get better. He comes from a culture where work was required every day. And so he s not afraid of the effort it takes to become a good player. Also, he wants to be a part of something really successful. I think that s why he chose the University of Oklahoma. I think he ll help us. Good news and bad news surrounds OU s final newcomer, Romero Osby. A transfer from Mississippi State with two years of eligibility remaining, the 6-8, 247-pound Osby is a big-body guy who can do damage from inside or out. From a talent standpoint, he s probably one of the top players on the team. Unfortunately for Capel, Osby has to sit out the season due to transfer rules. I wish Romero could play right now, said Capel of the forward who averaged 4.3 points and 2.6 rebounds in 13.1 minutes a game last year as a sophomore. He s a very talented guy we recruited out of high school. He had some really good moments at Mississippi State but was never able to put it all together. I think his year out (from game competition) will be really good for him. It will allow him to get his confidence back by working on himself. It will also help us in practice, because we ll be playing against a very talented and hungry guy. I think being away from home and being here has already kind of reenergized him. Osby s assets go beyond his on-court talents, added Capel. Romero s a very mature guy, a very smart guy, a very competitive guy. I think he has outstanding leadership qualities. He ll be able to help this team in so many ways this season, especially with the pride he ll bring to it. 8 ACCORDING TO CAPEL Q: Can you reflect on your USA Basketball experience with the U18 team this summer? A: It was a great experience. Anytime you have an opportunity to represent your country, it s a tremendous honor. The fact we were doing it in our home country made it even more special. We had a tremendous group of young guys who came together to be a part of something bigger than themselves. The games themselves were very, very good. It was great to see that team come together and to see the guys push themselves to limits they didn t know they could. I really love how we won the gold medal because we overcame adversity. We were down nine with 8:53 left and our guys showed a resiliency and a resolve that I m not even sure they knew they had. You could really see and sense the level of pride on that team during those last nine minutes to get back in and win the game. For me as a coach, it was great to be a part of that. Q: Is there anything else besides your association with that gold medal that you were personally able to take away from the experience? A: You have a chance to be around different coaches. During the trials, you have everyone from the committee there. So you have a chance to pick their brain, talk to them about different parts of the game. Once we cut the team down to 12, it was (Georgia Tech head coach) Paul Hewitt, (Buffalo head coach) Reggie Witherspoon and myself. It was great to bounce different ideas off of them and just talk basketball for 16 days straight. It was great to be able to coach in the summer and to be around guys that bought into what we were doing, bought into being a part of something bigger than themselves. That s what team is about. We didn t have much time to become a team, but I thought we did become one. Q: Last year was obviously a difficult one, but were you able to take anything positive away from it? What were some of the primary things you and especially the returning players learned from it? A: Winning isn t necessarily a birthright. It s something you have to earn. You earn it by how you work leading up to the season. You can t just turn it on when the games start. It begins with your summer preparation mentally and physically. That s when you start to form your team. You have your new guys coming in, you have your returning guys. Every year is different, so you hope to establish some sort of leadership in the summer. We never did that last summer. You hope to establish a work ethic, and that usually comes from older guys in the program. That never happened last summer. Hopefully our returning guys from last year learned what not to do. Hopefully they learned that when you don t do those things you can t expect to have success. Q: What have the players told you about their workouts this summer? A: It seems like they re working hard. I ve been on the road a lot with USA Basketball and with recruiting, but I stay in contact with our guys through text and by calling. There are quite a few guys that when I contact them at night, they re either on their way to the gym or leaving the gym. That s different than last summer. I think because of what happened last year, our returning players have more of a hunger, a little bit more of a desire to not let that happen again. I think maybe they ve worked harder than they ve ever worked. One of the encouraging things from the spring was that everyone s mile time decreased. We had six weeks after the season before school let out and we tested our guys before exam week. Steven Pledger finally broke six minutes. Andrew Fitzgerald was right at six minutes. Andrew s down to 237 pounds. Those guys have embraced how hard we have to work. In turn, that s set an example for the new guys. One of the things with our new guys is that all of them feel like they have something to prove. Carl Blair, coming from the University of New Orleans, is excited to be at a place like Oklahoma. Same thing with (junior college transfers) Nick Thompson and C.J. Washington. You can go on down the list. They re excited and there s been a different energy around here. It s something we look forward to harnessing and working with when we get to August. Q: From a personal standpoint, how would you describe your attitude toward the upcoming season? A: There s been a different energy around here and I m excited about it. I m excited to see what we become. We still Head coach Jeff Capel have expectations. We want to become the best team we can be hopefully vie for one of the top spots in the Big 12 and make the NCAA Tournament. Mainly, we want to work hard every day, get better every day. In order to do that, we have to come to work with the right mindset every day. How good will we be? I don t know. We have a lot of new guys. Even our returning guys we hope they ve gotten a lot better. Once we start in August we ll get a better feel for where we are. We ll figure out what our strengths are, concentrate on them and use them to become the best team we can be. Q: Outside of Cade Davis, there s not a ton of experience with the players that return from last year. Have you ever had a team where even the sophomores are going to be looked at as leaders? A: Not really, no. Maybe you could liken it a little to my first year here when we had David Godbold and Michael Neal coming back with significant experience and not really anyone else. Guys like Austin Johnson, Taylor Griffin, Longar Longar and Nate Carter really hadn t played that much. Blake Griffin was a leader his sophomore year (in ), but that was completely different. As a coach, I ve never been in a situation like this. Q: Will you lean on what you learned your first year at OU? A: I ll lean on that a little bit. I also had an experience as a player that s somewhat similar to what we ve gone through the last two years. As a freshman at Duke, we played for a national championship. As a sophomore, we were overall and 2-14 in the ACC. We had two lottery picks on that team and another guy who was a second-round pick. So we were talented, but we weren t a good basketball team. We never came together, the chemistry wasn t there. We lost a lot of close games. We came back my junior year and, because of what we had just gone through, we didn t want that to happen again. We were more talented when I was a sophomore, but our team was better when I was a junior because we were a team. We understood how much we needed each other. I thought guys made a commitment to work. Because of that we made the NCAA Tournament, which was great for that team. I ll look back on that experience as well to help push buttons and try to become the best team we can be. Q: With nine new players on the roster, how big of a burden is that? Or do you not view it as one? A: I look at it as refreshing. I think all nine new guys are talented and are really good kids. Most importantly, this is the place they want to be. We re excited to get them here and have an opportunity to work with them and help them become better in every aspect of their lives. I don t look at it as a burden to coach anyone. You have turnover and change every year. Certainly this will be the most new guys I ve had in one year, but that s exciting. Hopefully these guys will bring a new energy to our program that we haven t had in a couple years.

9 ACCORDING TO CAPEL Q: Youth and inexperience aside, how would you describe the makeup of your team? A: That s hard to say right now, because I haven t been around them. We have experience in the backcourt with Cade Davis and Steven Pledger, and even a guy like Carl Blair, who has played college basketball (at the University of New Orleans). The only guy in the frontcourt who has experience is Andrew Fitzgerald. The rest of the guys are new to this level. They re going to have to grow up very, very quickly. All of our news guys will. With our schedule, they ll be thrown into the fire early. We have to put our guys in positions when we start our workouts in August and when we begin practice in October to learn fast. It s going to be challenging because we ll have to be ready very quickly. Q: Cade Davis has been through thick and thin during his three years here. What are you looking for from him as the lone senior? A: We need his leadership. We need him to be 100 percent invested in our team and to be the leader of our team. Cade has a tremendous opportunity because I think he has guys who will follow him. He has guys who will work, will get in here and do extra stuff, who want to be a part of it. It s a great opportunity for him to really step up and grow as a leader. He has to work at a very high level every day. He has to get to know all of these guys, know what buttons to push and when to push them. He has to learn how to get the most out of everyone. And he s going to need help doing it. I think that help has to come from guys like Andrew Fitzgerald, or Carl Blair or Romero Osby. Even though Romero has to sit out this year, he has a great spirit, a great voice and a tremendous work ethic. We don t want to overburden Cade because we want and need him to have a heck of a senior year. Q: You return just 28 percent of the scoring and 22 percent of the rebounding from last year. Are you confident you have guys who can pick up that slack and produce? A: We probably won t be as talented as we were last year. We lost two guys who were drafted (Willie Warren and Tiny Gallon) and another who was an all-conference player and thought he was an NBA player (Tommy Mason-Griffin). So I don t know if we ll have anyone on our team more talented than those three, but I think we can be a better team. I think guys will understand how much we need each other. I think overall, perhaps we ll have a little more quality depth. But mainly, I think we ll have guys totally immersed in OU with both feet in and what we want to accomplish. Q: You ve said that point guard is the most important and most difficult position. What do you see from that spot on this team? A: That s hard to answer right now because I haven t had the chance to work with the guys who ll probably be playing that spot. Getting Carl Blair was really important for us because he brings the experience of playing college basketball. The level will be different, but the fact he was a Division I player last year and played against high-major teams won t be new to him. The other guys who can maybe play that position like Calvin Newell and maybe T.J. Taylor in some spot minutes will be new. They ll be green. There will be a learning curve for them. Hopefully as we go through our workouts, the start of practice and our exhibition game, those guys can grow up fairly quickly. Q: What are your thoughts on the non-conference schedule? A: It s a very, very challenging non-conference schedule. Scheduling is a difficult thing every year. You have to kind of do it early. This year s schedule was put together before last season started when we thought we d have Tiny (Gallon) and Tommy (Mason-Griffin) returning. Obviously, the Maui Invitational field is incredible. Road games at Arkansas and Arizona, the game against Cincinnati in the All-College Classic they re all big-time games against very good opponents with strong traditions. The schedule will give us an opportunity to see where we are. We ll compete as hard we can and try to win as many as we can. Q: The Big 12 lost a lot of quality individual talent from last year. Do you still see it as one of the top leagues for this season and how do you see the conference race shaping up? A: I think it s going to be a challenging year in the league and a tight race. The majority of teams lost at least their one or two best players, so I think that s going to make things interesting. But there s still a lot of talent. When you re talking about talent you start with Kansas and what they return. Baylor may return the best player in the conference in LaceDarius Dunn. You may get a huge argument out of Manhattan, Kan., about that because of Jacob Pullen. Kansas State returns the majority of its team. Oklahoma State returns some good players and had a very good recruiting class. There ll be some debate in Colorado about the best player in the league returning. They have two of the best in Cory Higgins and Alec Burks. Texas Tech returns the majority of its guys. So I think it s going to be a really interesting year. It s always competitive and it s always tough to win. Q: How have Bryan Goodman and Dionne Phelps readapted as assistant coaches and what do they bring to your staff? A: They ve been great. They ve brought a jolt of energy to our program. I don t know if people really realize that those guys have combined for more than 25 years of coaching experience. When you talk about hot coaches, Bryan Goodman probably fell under that category just a few years ago when he was an assistant at Bucknell and with what they were able to accomplish. He had to get out of coaching for a little while to take care of his family when his wife had quadruplets. He has a passion a passion for the University of Oklahoma, a passion for teaching. His character has been a huge plus for us. Dionne Phelps has 16 years of college coaching experience, all in the state of Texas. Being in some of the places he was for all those years will hopefully help us in recruiting the state. Also, Dionne s character, passion and energy will be contagious to the kids in our program and the guys we recruit. So it s been great for me to hear different voices and to have a different type of energy around here.

21 HEAD COACH JEFF CAPEL Fifth Year at Oklahoma Career Record (8 Years) Record at OU Oklahoma caught most college basketball insiders if not all of them by surprise when it named then-31-year-old Jeff Capel its 13th men s basketball head coach on April 11, Capel, who inherited a thin roster and a list of recruiting restrictions when he arrived at OU, has averaged more than 20 wins over his four seasons in Norman, has guided two teams to the NCAA Tournament (including one to the Elite Eight), coached the program s first consensus national player of the year and has had four Sooners picked in the NBA Draft. Following a four-year stint as head coach at Virginia Commonwealth, Capel landed in Norman ready to launch the Oklahoma program back into the national limelight. His swift rebuilding project has netted him 82 wins, the second most of any OU coach in history after four years at the helm (Billy Tubbs recorded 84 in his first four seasons). OU s and campaigns were particularly impressive. The Sooners posted a record in (a seven-win improvement over the previous year) and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. They followed with a 30-6 mark the program s first Elite Eight showing since The 30-win season was just the sixth ever for the school. Capel s squad, led by national player of the year Blake Griffin, bolted to a 25-1 start and reach the No. 2 spot in the national rankings the program s highest perch in 19 seasons. The Sooners on-court success has been aided by Capel s ability to attract top talent. The energetic mentor with Tobacco Road lineage has signed four McDonald s All-Americans in his four years. OU had signed five such players in its history prior to his arrival. Capel s Oklahoma teams have produced in the classroom, as well. His first three squads produced an average Academic Progress Rate figure of 971, well above the 934 national three-year average for men s basketball teams. Sixteen players have graduated from OU since Capel was hired, including 10 who played for him. Capel s success at Oklahoma should come as no surprise based on his performance at VCU, where he recorded a (.658) overall record and a (.694) mark in Colonial Athletic Association play. His Rams boasted a overall home record for a staunch.811 winning percentage. In , VCU s CAA Tournament championship game victory over George Mason catapulted the Rams to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since VCU lost in the first round to Wake Forest, but not before putting a major scare into Chris Paul s fourth-seeded Demon Deacons, Capel s squad, which finished 19-13, competed in the National Invitation Tournament, marking just the third time in VCU history that it made consecutive postseason appearances. The Rams won at least 18 games each of Capel s four seasons at VCU with the squad registering a Capel-era-best 23-8 record. His first team finished in as Capel tied a school record for wins by a first-year head coach. In , VCU finished overall and 11-7 in league play. Capel has served two coaching stints with USA Basketball, each one resulting in a gold medal. This past July as head coach, he directed the USA to a 5-0 record in the FIBA America s U18 Championship in San Antonio, Texas. After winning its first four games by an average margin of 50 points, Capel s squad posted an come-from-behind win over Brazil in the title game. In August 2005, Capel served as an assistant coach on the USA Men s World University Games Team that finished 8-0 in Turkey. Villanova s Jay Wright was the head coach. The squad featured, among others, Midwest City (Okla.) High School and Duke University standout Shelden Williams. Capel began his coaching career as an assistant at Old Dominion in 2000 before moving to VCU as an assistant for the season. In 2002, he became the youngest NCAA Division I head coach at age 27. A four-year starter for Hall-of-Fame coach Mike Krzyzewski at Duke from the through campaigns, Capel earned Atlantic Coast Conference honors each of his seasons in Durham. The guard, who wore No. 5, averaged 12.4 points, 3.0 rebounds, 3.4 assists and pointers during his career. He ranks 22nd in career scoring at Duke (1,601 points), 16th in minutes played (3,774), sixth in 3-pointers (220), seventh in 3-point attempts (553), seventh in 3-point field goal percentage (.398) and 10th in assists (433). Capel started 28 games as a freshman for a Duke squad that lost to Arkansas in the 1994 national championship game, He led the Blue Devils in scoring as a junior (16.6 ppg) and helped Duke to a No. 8 final AP ranking as a senior. He averaged 26.5 points over Duke s two NCAA Tournament games his final year, the same season he was named an Academic All-ACC selection. Responsible for one of the most memorable shots in college basketball history, Capel nailed a running, buzzer-beating 30-footer to force double-overtime against rival North Carolina in a 1995 home game. The contest ranked No. 1 on the list of 25 Greatest Moments in ESPN Basketball History and the play was nominated for an ESPY award. Following graduation in 1997, Capel played professionally for two years. He spent the season playing for the Continental Basketball Association s Grand Rapids Hoops. In , he played in France before returning to Grand Rapids. A standout prep performer, Capel was named the 1993 North Carolina High School Player of the Year after averaging 23.8 points, 5.1 rebounds and 7.7 assists for 31-1 state champion Fayetteville South View. He set school career records for points (2,066), rebounds (668) and assists (663). Capel boasts a strong basketball pedigree. His father, Jeff Capel Jr., was an eight-year Division I head coach at Old Dominion (seven years) and North Carolina A&T (one year), and currently serves as an assistant coach for the NBA s Charlotte Bobcats franchise. Capel s younger brother, Jason, was a four-year starter at North Carolina who averaged 12.1 points during the through seasons. Jason Capel helped the Tar Heels to the 2000 Final Four. OU s leading SEASON AT A GLANCE Overall Record: Big 12 Record: 4-12 (Ninth Place Tie) Big 12 Championship: First Round: Oklahoma State 81, OU 67 Postseason: None Home Record: 11-4 (4-4 Big 12) Road Record: 1-9 (0-8 Big 12) Record vs. AP Top-25 Teams: 1-4 scorer (16.3 ppg), he had surgery March 3 and missed the season s final six contests. Freshman Tommy Mason-Griffin was a third-team All-Big 12 selection after averaging 14.1 points, 2.9 rebounds and a team-high 5.0 assists. He ranked fourth in the Big 12 in assists, third in 3-point field goal percentage (.424) and sixth in 3-pointers per game (2.3). In conference play, he averaged team highs of 16.9 points, 4.6 assists and 2.9 treys while shooting a team-best.430 from long range. He led the Sooners in scoring 10 times over the last 14 games. A member of the Big 12 All-Rookie Team, Mason-Griffin set OU freshman records for assists (154), assists per game (5.0), 3-point field goal percentage (.424) and minutes per game (35.7). His 38 points versus Iowa State on Jan. 27 were the most by a league player on the year and the most by a freshman guard in school history. Warren earned honorable mention All-Big 12 acclaim after averaging 16.3 points, 3.3 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 1.0 steal a game. Senior guard Tony Crocker finished his career ranked fifth in games played (132), 15th in points (1,351), fourth in 3-point field goals (198) and tied for third in 3-point attempts (540). He and Ryan Minor are the only players in school history to amass at least 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and pointers. On the season, Crocker led all Big 12 guards in both rebounding (6.2) and double-doubles (seven). Four of OU s top seven scorers were freshmen. The freshmen accounted for 47 percent percent of the team s scoring on the year, the most of any Big 12 team (Texas and Nebraska ranked second at 39 percent). The Sooners backcourt accounted for 74 percent of the team s points. OU s top three scorers and five of its top six were guards. Oklahoma averaged point field goals per game, the second highest figure in program history (the squad averaged 8.6). The Sooners ranked second in the Big 12 with their.744 free throw percentage. The mark was the program s best in eight years and the fifth best in school history. Oklahoma used nine different starting lineups in its 16 conference games. OU s.457 field goal percentage defense was its highest in 16 seasons. Its point field goal percentage defense was its highest in 22 seasons and second highest ever. The Sooners were also outrebounded for just the second time in the last 16 years. CROCKER CONCLUDES OUTSTANDING CAREER With a solid senior season, guard Tony Crocker finished his OU career ranked fifth in games played (132), 15th in points (1,351), fourth in 3-point field goals (198) and tied for third in 3-point attempts (540). He and Ryan Minor ( ) are the only players in school history to amass at least 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and pointers. The 6-6, 209-pounder from San Antonio, Texas, started 125 career games (five shy of the OU record), including his last 96. On the season, Crocker averaged career highs of 11.4 points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.1 steals per contest. He led all Big 12 guards in both rebounding and double-doubles (seven). Crocker set a Big 12 record for points in a half when he netted 29 in the first 20 minutes against Centenary on Dec. 9. He hit seven 3-pointers in the opening period, tying a league record for treys in a half. He finished with a career-high 33 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in the win. MASON-GRIFFIN NAMED THIRD-TEAM ALL-BIG 12 Point guard Tommy Mason-Griffin earned third-team All-Big 12 honors and was named to the league s allrookie team. Despite the fact he was the only league freshman named to the first-, second- or third-team all-conference squads, he was not named Big 12 Freshman of the Year (that honor went to Colorado s Alec Burks). In Big 12 play, the 5-11, 203-pounder from Houston, Texas, led all league newcomers in assists (4.6 apg), 3-point percentage (.430) and 3-pointers per game (2.9). He also ranked second among conference newcomers in scoring (16.9) and free throw percentage (.831). Here are more notes: On the year, Mason-Griffin averaged 14.1 points, 2.9 rebounds and 5.0 assists while shooting.424 from 3-point range and.813 from the free throw line. He ranked fourth in the Big 12 in assists, third in 3-point percentage and sixth in 3-pointers per game (2.3). Mason-Griffin set OU freshman records for assists (154), 3-pointers (70), 3-point percentage and minutes per game (35.7). Mason-Griffin made at least one trey in 29 of 31 games, at least two in 20 games, at least three in 11 outings and at least four seven times. Mason-Griffin led OU in scoring in 10 of the last 14 games after not doing it in any of the season s first 17 contests. Over those 14 outings, he averaged 18.9 points and 5.2 assists while shooting.424 from 3-point range (39 makes) and.871 from the free throw line (54 makes) in an average of 38.9 minutes. In OU s 16 league contests, Mason-Griffin shot.430 from 3-point range (46-for-107). The rest of the team shot.287 (73-for-254). Mason-Griffin played at least 37 minutes in 15 of the last 16 games. He logged 40 or more minutes eight times in those 16 outings. WARREN EARNS HONORABLE MENTION ALL-LEAGUE ACCLAIM Sophomore guard Willie Warren, who underwent season-ending arthroscopic surgery on his right ankle March 3, was one of nine players who picked up honorable mention All-Big 12 acclaim. Warren averaged a team-high 16.3 points per game on the year and added 3.3 rebounds and 4.1 assists an outing. The 6-4, 203-pounder from Fort Worth, Texas, who missed half of the conference season due to injury or illness, scored at least 20 points seven times in his 21 games on the year. The unanimous choice as Big 12 Freshman of the Year, Warren made 27 more free throws this season than the next closest teammate (despite missing nine total games). DAVIS MAKES MOST OF INCREASED PLAYING TIME Over his freshman and sophomore seasons, guard Cade Davis averaged 4.2 points and 1.6 rebounds over 14.0 minutes per contest. Last season, Davis saw his minutes and production increase sharply. As a junior, Davis started OU s final 27 games and averaged 31.8 minutes. His scoring and rebounding averages jumped to 9.9 and 3.9, respectively, and he led the Sooners and ranked ninth in the Big 12 with his 1.5 steals per contest. Davis canned 58 treys (one less than his first two seasons combined) and shot.347 from long range. In conference play, he averaged 11.5 points and 4.7 boards while shooting.361 from behind the arc (2.2 treys per game). PICK YOUR POISON Five different Sooners each made at least 30 treys on the season. Texas, with four, was the only other Big 12 team with more than three players with at least 30 3-point makes each. Tommy Mason-Griffin led Oklahoma with 70 makes (2.3 per game) and was followed by Cade Davis with 58 (1.9 per outing), Steven Pledger with 44 (1.5 per contest), Tony Crocker with 40 (1.3 per game) and Willie Warren with 30 (1.4 per game). The Sooners ranked second in the Big 12 with their 8.1 treys per outing (their second most ever).

26 REVIEW NOTES GUARDS SHOULDER THE LOAD Five of OU s top six scorers, including its top four, were guards. The Sooners backcourt accounted for 1,653 of the team s 2,235 points, or 74 percent. Willie Warren led the guard charge by averaging 16.3 points per outing and was followed by Tommy Mason Griffin (14.1), Tony Crocker (11.4), Cade Davis (9.9) and Steven Pledger (6.2). All five of those players surpassed the 20-point mark at least twice on the year (Warren and Mason-Griffin did it seven times each, Crocker and Davis three times each and Pledger twice). Mason-Griffin (three times), Crocker and Davis all scored at least 20 points in a half. By comparison, guards accounted for 52 percent of OU s points in YOUTH MOVEMENT The freshman foursome of Tommy Mason-Griffin (13.8 ppg), Tiny Gallon (10.6), Steven Pledger (5.7) and Andrew Fitzgerald (4.8) combined to score 1,060 of the team s 2,235 points on the year, or 47 percent. The percentage of scoring output by OU s freshmen was higher than that of any other Big 12 team. Freshmen accounted for 39 percent of Texas points, 39 percent of Nebraska s, 27 percent of Colorado s, 23 percent of Kansas, 15 percent of Texas A&M s, 13 percent of Kansas State s, 13 percent of Oklahoma State s, 11 percent of Missouri s, nine percent of Baylor s, five percent of Iowa State s and two percent of Texas Tech s. In addition to his scoring, Mason-Griffin ranked fourth in the Big 12 with his 5.0 assists per game and third with his point field goal percentage. Gallon, who shot a team-high.547 from the field, ranked eighth in the Big 12 in rebounds per game (7.9) and sixth with seven doubledoubles (he missed out on two others by one rebound each). Pledger knocked down 44 treys in 30 contests and had three games of at least 18 points. Fitzgerald made 11 starts and shot.511 from the field. MASON-GRIFFIN S STELLAR NIGHT On Jan. 27, freshman Tommy Mason-Griffin propelled the Sooners to an home win over Iowa State. On a night in which OU played without Willie Warren and Tony Crocker due to ankle injuries (the pair entered the game averaging a combined 30 points), Mason-Griffin finished with 38 points and six assists while playing all 40 minutes (he battled leg cramps the final 3:45). The point guard was 13-for-21 from the field, 5-for-10 from 3-point range and 7-for-7 from the free throw line. Mason-Griffin s 38 points against the Cyclones were: Four more than any other Big 12 player scored on the year. The most scored by an OU freshman since Wayman Tisdale in The most scored by a freshman guard in school history. Tied for the most scored by a point guard in school history (Mookie Blaylock also scored 38 against Iowa State in ). Tied for the fifth most by a freshman in Big 12 history (only Kansas State s Michael Beasley scored more). GERBER, WRIGHT EARN ACADEMIC ALL-BIG 12 ACCOLADES Seniors Beau Gerber and Ryan Wright were named to the Academic All-Big 12 squad, with Gerber earning first-team honors and Wright second-team accolades. It was the first academic all-league award for Gerber and the third for Wright (two at OU and one at UCLA). Gerber is a mechanical engineering major and an electrical engineering minor. Wright is pursuing a master s degree in human relations. TISDALE INDUCTED INTO COLLEGIATE HOOPS HALL Wayman Tisdale, OU s all-time leading scorer and rebounder, was inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame Nov. 22 in Kansas City, Mo. Tisdale starred at Oklahoma for three seasons in the mid-1980s and was named a first-team consensus All-American and Big Eight Conference Player of the Year each year. Tisdale, who was the leading rebounder on the 1984 U.S. Olympic gold medal team and was the No. 2 overall pick of the 1985 NBA Draft, passed away last May from cancer at the age of 44. His widow, Regina Tisdale, was on hand to accept the honor on Tisdale s behalf. Among the others in this year s eight-person class were Larry Bird and Magic Johnson. Leading returning scorer Cade Davis was the only Sooner to start all 16 conference games last year. He averaged 11.5 points and 4.7 rebounds while shooting.361 from 3-point range (35-for-97) in Big 12 play.
