2 Head Coach Jeff Capel Jeff Capel was named Oklahoma s 1th men s basketball head coach on April 11, The youngest head coach in the Big 12 Conference ( years old), Capel is in his fifth year at OU and in his ninth year overall. Led the Sooners to a 0-6 record and an NCAA Tournament Elite Eight appearance in The team, which featured consensus national player of the year and No. 1 NBA Draft pick Blake Griffin, peaked at No. 2 in the national polls for three weeks in February. Then-senior Tony Crocker averaged 18.0 points and 12.0 rebounds for the Sooners, while current Texas Tech senior Mike Singletary averaged.0 points and 8.0 boards. It gave Texas Tech its first series sweep of OU since the Big 12 was formed. Warren led OU with 18 points while Crocker added 16 points and 11 rebounds. John Roberson scored 22 points for the Red Raiders. SATURDAY S TEXAS RECAP (BOX SCORE ON PAGE 12 OF THESE NOTES) Oklahoma shot.92 from the field and.067 (1-for-1) from -point range in a loss at No. 12 Texas. The Sooners trailed by just six a minute into the second half (27-21) but committed 11 of their 1 turnovers after halftime. Texas outscored OU 1-4 in the points-off-turnovers category on the day. The Longhorns entered the game outrebounding their opponents by an average of 7.6 boards per game, but they grabbed just one more than the Sooners (-2). OU s 46 points and.067 -point field goal mark were season lows. The Sooners entered the game ranked third in the Big 12 with their 7.1 treys per game and fifth in -point percentage (.7). Oklahoma was whistled for 21 fouls to Texas 11. The Longhorns were 11-for-21 at the line while OU was -for-9. Forty-one of OU s 46 points were scored by freshmen or sophomores. Senior guard Cade Davis (1.1 ppg) and sophomore guard Steven Pledger (11.8) entered the day with a combined 24.9 scoring average, but totaled just three points against the Longhorns (all by Davis). Pledger was 0-for-8 from the field while Davis was 1-for-4. SOONERS SIGN JUNIOR COLLEGE STANDOUT Junior college preseason All-American Robert Goff signed a letter of intent with the Sooners Nov. 1 and will be a junior at OU starting in Goff, a 6-9, 20-pound sophomore who attends Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College, originally hails from Indianapolis, Ind. He played at Cowley County (Kan.) Community College as a freshman in before transferring to Hutchinson and sitting out the season. At Cowley, Goff averaged 9.2 points, 6.9 rebounds and 1. blocked shots per game while shooting.612 from the field for head coach Steve Eck, who s now the head coach at Hutchinson. Robert s a perfect fit, said OU head coach Jeff Capel. We identified him very early as someone we really wanted, and we re fortunate that he s a Sooner. He s a tremendous athlete and will provide size for us, which we need. Plus, he s older and will come in and contribute right away. I think he can be an anchor for our defense with his ability to clog up the lane and block shots. Offensively, he has skill. He can also really run the floor. The thing I m excited about is he s a great kid. He has a strong desire to grow as a basketball player and as a young man. UP NEXT OU is home again Saturday to host Colorado at 12:0 p.m. CT. The game will be televised by the Big 12 Network. QUANTIFYING OU S BASKETBALL TRADITION This is the 104th season of Oklahoma varsity basketball (the program s first game was Nov. 26, 1907). OU owns a 1, (.611) all-time record, ranking it 29th in NCAA Division I history in wins and 8th in winning percentage. Oklahoma has participated in four NCAA Final Fours (199, 1947, 1988 and 2002) and in two NCAA championship games (it lost to Holy Cross in 1947 and to Kansas in 1988). OU has made 26 NCAA Tournament appearances and seven postseason NIT showings. Its 22 NCAA Tournament appearances over the last 28 years rank as the eighth most in the nation. Oklahoma has made 27 postseason appearances over the last 29 years (22 NCAA Tournaments and five NIT s).
