2 HEAD COACH JEFF CAPEL Jeff Capel was named the 13th men s basketball head coach at Oklahoma on April 11, Capel, 33, is in his third year at OU and led the Sooners to a record and second-round NCAA Tournament appearance last year. Capel compiled a (.658) record over four years as head coach at Virginia Commonwealth prior to arriving in Norman. His VCU squads posted a (.694) record in Colonial Athletic Association play and a overall home record for a staunch.811 winning percentage. In , VCU s CAA Tournament championship game victory over George Mason catapulted the Rams to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since VCU lost in the first round to Wake Forest, but not before putting a major scare into the fourth-seeded Demon Deacons, Capel s squad, which finished 19-13, competed in the National Invitation Tournament, marking just the third time in program history that VCU made consecutive postseason appearances. The Rams won at least 18 games each of Capel s four seasons in Richmond with the squad registering a Capel-era-best 23-8 record. His first team finished in as Capel tied a school record for wins by a first-year head coach. In , VCU finished overall. In the summer of 2005, Capel served as an assistant coach on the gold-medal-winning USA Men s World University Games Team that finished 8-0 in Turkey in August. Villanova s Jay Wright was the head coach while Seton Hall s Bobby Gonzalez served as the other assistant. The squad featured, among others, Midwest City (Okla.) High School and Duke University standout Shelden Williams. Capel began his coaching career as an assistant at Old Dominion in 2000 before moving to VCU as an assistant for the season. In 2002, he became the youngest NCAA Division I head coach at age 27. A four-year starter for Hall-of-Fame coach Mike Krzyzewski at Duke from the through campaigns, Capel earned Atlantic Coast Conference honors each of his seasons in Durham. PREVIEWING OKLAHOMA Ranked nationally for the first time since the end of the season, Oklahoma is No. 12 in the preseason AP poll and No. 14 in the ESPN/USA Today coaches poll. OU was also picked No. 1 in the Big 12 preseason coaches poll for the first time in the 13-year history of the league. The Sooners are coming off a season that saw them finish 9-7 in the Big 12 (fourth place tie) and advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. OU returns seven letterwinners from that squad, including four players who started at least 20 games. The Sooners also welcome back 69 percent of their scoring, 68 percent of their rebounding, 72 percent of their assists and 74 percent of their 3-point field goals. Leading the Oklahoma charge in will be preseason consensus All-American and Big 12 Preseason Player of the Year Blake Griffin. The sophomore forward averaged 14.7 points and 9.1 rebounds last year while shooting.568 from the field, all team highs. Other returnees joining him are junior guard Tony Crocker (11.3 ppg, 3.8 rpg), senior guard Austin Johnson (8.6 ppg, 2.9 apg), senior forward Taylor Griffin (6.5 ppg, 4.9 rpg), senior guard Omar Leary (3.9 ppg), sophomore guard Cade Davis (3.7 ppg) and junior forward Beau Gerber. Junior forward Ryan Wright is a transfer from UCLA who practiced with the Sooners last year and is eligible for game competition this season. The freshman guard was the McDonald s game s leading scorer last spring (23 points in 22 minutes) and is the most highly touted high school guard signee in OU history. He is joined by junior forward Juan Pattillo, a top-five junior college transfer, sophomore juco transfers Orlando Allen and Kyle Cannon, and freshman guard Ray Willis. T.J. NOTE WORTHY Oklahoma is 39-2 (.951) in exhibition games over the past 20 seasons. Half of Oklahoma s 14 players did not play for the Sooners last year. Six players are in their first year at OU while Ryan Wright (a transfer from UCLA) practiced with the team last season but did not play in games. Out of its 31 regular season games this year, OU will play at least 19 against teams that made the 2008 postseason (13 against NCAA Tournament teams, four against NIT squads and two against CBI teams). It could play three more NCAA Tournament teams beyond the first round of the NIT Season Tip-Off (Davidson, Arizona and Purdue). Oklahoma has recorded 27 consecutive winning seasons, second nationally to Syracuse (38). Big 12 programs Kansas (25) and Oklahoma State (20) also boast lengthy streaks. OU s 34-member 1,000-point club could have two new inductees by season s end in junior Tony Crocker and sophomore Blake Griffin. Crocker needs 338 points to reach 1,000 (he scored 394 last year) while Griffin needs 516 (he totaled 484 last season while missing two games and all but five minutes of another).
