TITLETOWN USA-10: Dayton won its first outright Atlantic 10 Conference regular season championship Wednesday after defeating the VCU Rams This was the second consecutive conference championship for the Flyers. Last year, UD shared the crown with VCU and St. Bonaventure. Dayton has won four A-10 regular season conference championships. 2. SENIOR SUCCESS: Seniors Kyle Davis, Scoochie Smith, Kendall Pollard, Charles Cooke and Jeremiah Bonsu has won a program-record 102 games. UD s seniors are one of 16 classes in Atlantic 10 history to win 100 or more games. The Class of 2017 surpassed the Class of 2011 (Chris Wright, Devin Searcy, Peter Zesterman and Logan Nourse) in eight less games. The Class of 2017 has five NCAA Tournament wins and two A-10 regular season titles. 3. CRUISING IN CONFERENCE: The Flyers have won 51 of their last 63 Atlantic 10 regular season games. This season the Flyers are in first with a 15-2 record. The 15 conference wins this year are a program record. UD is also 7-1 against A-10 teams with a winning record (victories over Rhode Island (twice), St. Bonaventure (twice), VCU, George Mason and Richmond). 4. JUST WIN BABY: Dayton has won nine straight and 12 of its last 13. The nine-game winning streak matches the longest such run in the Archie Miller era. During the win streak, three Flyers are averaging in double figures: Kendall Pollard (15.7 ppg), Charles Cooke (14.7 ppg) and Scoochie Smith (13.4 ppg). UD s offense has scored 70 or more points in the last 10 games and are averaging 81 points during the winning streak. 5. ROAD RUNNERS: One of the keys to Dayton s Atlantic 10 success has been the team s ability to win on the road. The Flyers have won 17 of their last 23 conference road contests. This year UD is 6-2 in league road games and been victorious in four straight. 4 HEAD COACH ARCHIE MILLER In just five years as the University of Dayton s men s basketball coach, Ryan Archie Miller has gone from being one of the top young assistant coaches in the country to be one of the handful of coaches known across the nation with just the mention of one word. Bo. Shaka. Roy. Thad. And Archie. Archie Miller was named the Flyer coach in April His five-year record includes four trips to the post season, three trips to the NCAA tournament and an Elite Eight in With three NCAA wins in 2014 and another two in 2015, Dayton is one of 18 teams to have five NCAA tournament wins in the last three years. After an unexpected Elite Eight run in the 2014 NCAA tournament, the 36-year-old Miller had to replace three starters and four seniors from that team. Despite having a depleted roster that featured just six players who were recruited to Dayton and no active player taller than 6-foot-6, Miller led his Flyers to a 27-9 overall record and to the third round of the 2015 NCAA tournament. Following the campaign, the University upgraded and extended Miller s contract through the basketball season. He is a two-time finalist for the Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year Award (2015 & 2016) and was a semifinalist for the Naismith Coach of the Year in Miller came to UD from Arizona in He helped the Wildcats to a 30-8 season that ended with an Elite Eight berth. There are currently four brother coaching combinations in Division I: the Drews - Bryce (Vanderbilt) & Scott (Baylor); the Hurleys - Bobby (Arizona State) & Dan (Rhode Island); the Jones - Joe (Boston U.) & James (Yale); and the Millers - Archie (Dayton) & Sean (Arizona). Archie and Sean both played high school basketball for their father John at Blackhawk High School. John was one of the country s top coaches when he retired in 2005, with 657 wins in a 35-year coaching career. Archie, Sean and their sister Lisa all played Division I college basketball. The 19th coach ever at Dayton, Miller is just the sixth Flyer coach in the last 66 years. He tallied 12 points and five rebounds versus Winthrop. Pollard scored 14 versus Saint Joseph s College. He registered his first double-double of the year with a 12-point, 12-rebound effort versus East Tennessee State. He scored 13 points versus Vanderbilt. Pollard contributed with eight points and four assists versus VMI. He led the Flyers with 20 points on 7 of 11 shooting to go with four steals against La Salle. Pollard led UD with 21 points thanks to 3 of 3 shooting from three at St. Bonaventure. On his birthday, Pollard registered 18 points and five rebounds versus Rhode Island. He added a team high 19 points on 7 of 15 shooting from the field at VCU. Pollard led UD with 25 points on 8 of 11 shooting from the field at Fordham. He was 6 of 6 from the field to tally a game-high 16 points versus Duquesne. Pollard scored 19 points versus Saint Joseph s. He recorded a team-high 17 points along with five rebounds and three steals at Rhode Island. Pollard had 16 points and three assists versus St. Bonaventure. He added 10 points, six rebounds and three blocks against George Mason. Pollard had his second double-double of the year with an 18-point, 12-rebound performance at Davidson. He finished his sophomore season averaging 5.8 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.3 assists. Davis scored 17 points on 6 of 12 shooting from the field versus Austin Peay. 6 DAYTON SIGNS OUTSTANDING RECURITING CLASS Archie Miller on Nov. 9 announced the signing of four top high school players to letters of intent: 6-foot-4 guard Jordan Davis of Irmo, S.C., 7-foot center Jordan Pierce of Scotch Plains, N.J., 6-foot guard McKinley Wright from Champlain, Minn. and 6-foot-5 guard Nahziah Carter from Rochester, N.Y. Wright is the point guard for Champlin High School, the No. 7 team in USAToday.com s computer rankings. Both Wright and Davis were nominees for McDonald s All-America and are already their school s all-time leading scorer. Price was named the South Carolina 5A Player of the Year. Carter was the MVP of the Bishop Kearney Christmas Showcase, and big man Pierce broke a backboard earlier this season. The new recruits also had scholarship offers from schools in the ACC, Big Ten, Big XII and Big East, among others. HOME GAMES BROADCAST IN MANDARIN For the second straight year, the Dayton Flyers are audio broadcasting men s basketball home games in Mandarin Chinese. Mandarin is the most widely spoken dialect in China. University of Dayton students will be the announcers for the free broadcasts on a rotating basis. The announcers are all full-time University of Dayton students, whose majors range from Electro- Optics Engineering to Financial Mathematics. SEVEN STATE BASKETBALL CHAMPIONS Seven current members of the Dayton basketball team were part of 10 state championship teams in high school: Kostas Antetokounmpo, Charles Cooke, Josh Cunningham, Kyle Davis, Trey Landers, Kendall Pollard and Xeyrius Williams. POSH JOSH Redshirt sophomore Josh Cunningham returned to action against Rhode Island after missing 21 games with a torn ligament in his left ankle. Cunningham, a 6-foot-7, 225-pound forward from Chicago, is a transfer to Dayton from Bradley. Cunningham was a Top-100 prospect (No. 98 on the ESPN Top 100) coming out of high school. CBS Sports writer Jon Rothstein listed Cunningham as one of the top transfers in the season. He was voted as a co-captain for the campaign before ever playing a game at Dayton. He added 13 points and six boards versus Austin Peay. He added 12 points (all in the second half) on 5 of 6 shooting from the floor at Alabama before being injured in the game s final seconds. Cunningham finished with 12 points and a college careerhigh four assists at Saint Louis. He shot 4 of 5 from the field to finish with 10 points and four rebounds versus VCU. MILLER THE THRILLER CBS Sports Jon Rothstein listed Sam Miller as one of his 20 under-the-radar breakout players for Miller opened the season with 10 points and six rebounds versus Austin Peay. In his first start of the year, Miller registered eight points and five rebounds against No. 17 Saint Mary s. He scored 11 points versus Nebraska. Miller was 4 of 7 from the floor and finished with 10 points versus Portland. He added eight points and six boards versus Winthrop. Miller tallied nine points and five rebounds against Northwestern. He was 6 of 8 from the floor to score a team-high 15 points in 16 minutes of action versus VMI. Miller had six points and five rebounds at Duquesne. CROSBY, STILLS & DASH A Second Team All-Baltimore Metro choice as a high school senior at Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, guard John Crosby nearly averaged a triple-double in Crosby as a freshman saw action in 32 games for the Flyers and finished the season averaging 2.4 points an 0.9 assists per game. Crosby posted six points and two assists versus Nebraska. He had six rebounds versus Winthrop. Crosby added seven points and five boards versus Saint Joseph s College. He scored seven points and had two steals versus East Tennessee State. Crosby totalled 10 points and seven assists versus VMI. He sparked the Flyers with five first-half points and six rebounds against La Salle. Crosby scored eight at home against Duquesne. 7 TELEVISION EXPOSURE For the second consecutive year, every Dayton regular season game will be televised during the season. UD will play a school-record 22 contests on national television in , one more than last year s total. Dayton will play nine games on the ESPN family of networks and CBS Sports Network, two on NBC Sports Network, two on the American Sports Network and one on the Big Ten Network. Regionally, a total of at least five games will air on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel in Ohio and three on FOX Sports Ohio. Dayton also had the Vanderbilt and George Mason games streamed on Facebook Live. The Atlantic 10 is the first conference to stream games on Facebook Live. SERVING TREY Trey Landers converted both field goal attempts to finish with four points versus Austin Peay. He had five points and two steals against Saint Joseph s College. Landers chipped in with four points, three rebounds and a block against VMI. He scored five points in six minutes versus Saint Louis. Landers added four points and three rebounds versus Duquesne. He had five points on 2 of 2 from the field in seven minutes and a block at Saint Louis. ANTETOKOUNMPO TO SIT OUT SEASON The University of Dayton announced in October that freshman basketball player Kostas Antetokounmpo will sit out the season. The 6-foot-10 forward from Athens, Greece began practicing with the team on Dec. 22 after being ruled as a partial qualifier by the NCAA. Antetokounmpo will retain four years of eligibility, beginning with next season. REFLECTING ON THE LIFE OF STEVE McELVENE Not long into the off-season, the Dayton men s basketball program suffered a tragic loss when redshirt freshman center Steve McElvene died unexpectedly on May 12, at home near Fort Wayne, Ind. The 6-foot-11 McElvene played one season for the Flyers, setting a single-season record with 55 blocked shots. He also averaged 6.1 points and 5.6 rebounds. Big Steve had a big personality to go along with his big physical presence, and was a popular figure on campus and in his hometown. He spent the afternoon before his death speaking to classes at his high school alma mater, New Haven High School. Steve and his family were honored in pregame ceremonies before Dayton s opener. BASKETBALL BRILLIANCE Dayton is one of five schools who finds both its men s and women s basketball teams in first place of their respective conferences. The others are North Dakota (Big Sky), Belmont (OVC), Bucknell (Patriot) and Gonzaga (WCC). UD TO PLAY AT THE 2017 CHARLESTON CLASSIC The Gildan Charleston Classic set the eight-team field for the 2017 tournament to be held Thursday, Friday and Sunday, Nov. 16, 17 and 19, at TD Arena in Charleston, S.C. The field will include Auburn, Clemson, Dayton, Hofstra, Indiana State, Old Dominion, Ohio and Temple. Dayton last played in the Charleston Classic in 2012 earning a 5th-place finish after defeating Boston College and Auburn. UD ARENA RATED AMONG BEST 2016 STADIUM EXPERIENCES In its annual Top 100 list, Stadium Journey rated UD Arena as the 37th best stadium experience in the country in UD Arena was the second-best college basketball venue, only behind Kansas Allen Fieldhouse. Stadium Journey, operated by Scout.com, provides information to sports travelers who want to optimize their experience at live sporting events. The Top Five were Camden Yards, the St. Petersburg Grand Prix, Busch Stadium, the Daytona 500 and the Winnipeg Jets MTS Centre. ACADEMIC SUCCESS Academically at the University of Dayton, student-athletes are offered a comprehensive array of support programs and services, integrated with the University resources, that empowers all student-athletes to achieve academic success while balancing the demands of athletic participation and everyday college life. That academic support has led to some unprecedented results, specifically with the men s basketball program. Every senior but one under coach Archie Miller has earned his degree. 110 out of the last 112 men s basketball seniors have graduated from Dayton. Dayton s graduation success rate of 95 in this year s report ranks the University tied for 26th in the nation. The Flyers were one of 10 teams to have perfect scores and make the 2015 NCAA tournament. The others were Butler, Davidson, Duke, Iowa, Kansas, Notre Dame, Texas, Villanova, and Wofford. The most recent four-year APR for all Division I athletes is 978. Division I men s basketball players earned a 961, up four points (the University of Dayton men s basketball program was well above the national average with an APR of 974). Dayton is one of two institutions, Duke being the other, with their men s and women s basketball teams that hold a perfect 100 GSR and who participated in the 2015 NCAA Basketball Championships. Fall cumulative grade point average for the team was the highest in the past 10 years. THE MADNESS STARTS IN DAYTON UD Arena will once again tip-off March Madness as the host site for the 2017 NCAA First Four, March 14 and 15. UD Arena is the all-time leader with 113 NCAA Tournament games hosted. That is 30 more than the original home of the NCAA Tournament, Kansas City s Municipal Auditorium. Since the NCAA Tournament expanded to 64 teams in 1985, Dayton has hosted the event 20 times. The University of Dayton is riding a 16- year streak, including four years (2001, 2006, 2009, 2013) in which it hosted the tournament s opening round game(s) and the next two rounds.

Pollard joined Scoochie Smith and Charles Cooke as current Flyers who have scored more than 1,000 points in their collegiate careers. The last Flyer team with three 1,000-point scorers was the squad with Chris Wright, Chris Johnson and Marcus Johnson. BIG DANCE BITES Dayton has won five NCAA Tournament games in the past three years, one of 18 schools to accomplish that feat. UD had not made the NCAA Tournament in three straight seasons since 1965 to Miller is one of five active coaches who had at least five NCAA wins in his first four seasons. The others are Mark Few, Thad Matta, Shaka Smart and Roy Williams. The Flyers advanced to the Regional Semifinal seven times, the Regional Final three times, and finished as the National Runner-Up in ALMOST FAMOUS The Dayton current and future roster possesses numerous celebrity connections in sports and entertainment. Nahziah Carter, the fourth member of the class of 2017, is the nephew of hip hop mogul Jay Z. Joey Gruden s father, Jay, is the head coach of the Washington Redskins. His uncle is Jon Gruden a former Flyer football player and Super Bowl winning head coach. Kostas Antetokounmpo s brother, Giannis, is a rising star for the Milwaukee Bucks. His other brother, Thanasis, played for the New York Knicks in John Crosby s cousin is Los Angeles Rams receiver, Tavon Austin. Charles Cooke s cousin, Devante Parker, is a wide receiver with the Miami Dolphins. BEST IN NCAA ATTENDANCE Dayton ranked 25th nationally in average attendance in UD s average crowd of 12,942 fans a game is the secondbest in school history. Dayton finished in the Top 30 in men s basketball attendance for the 19th straight season. This is the 19th consecutive year with an average attendance of 12,000 or more fans. Since UD Arena opened in 1969, Dayton has been in the NCAA s Top 35 in attendance every season. Dayton is on pace to break the single-season average attendance record, which was set the first year the building was open ( ). BROKEN RECORD Dayton broke the single-season average attendance record this year with 13,018 fans per game. The previous record was 12,982 fans per game, which was set the first year UD Arena opened in PLUS SELLOUTS AT UD ARENA UD Arena has 116 sellouts in its 47-year history, including the exhibition game this season versus Findlay. Three sellouts have been this season: (VUC, Duquesne and St. Bonaventure). Last year the Flyers sold out six contests: (Arkansas, Saint Louis, La Salle, St. Bonaventure, Rhode Island and VCU). The record for sellouts is eight in the Arena s first season ( ). 280 AND COUNTING Dayton s game versus George Mason on Feb. 25, 2015 marked the 250th consecutive UD regular season home game with an attendance of at least 11,000 fans. DAYTON S NBA LINEAGE CONTINUES Flyer alum Brian Roberts (Charlotte Hornets), is representing Dayton during the NBA season. Roberts is one of the 19 former Flyers who have played in the NBA.
