3 News 3 Tips to get the most out of the cooler weather (StatePoint) The temperatures are dropping and it s time for cool weather fun. Here are a few ideas for enjoying the season both indoors and out. Outdoor Adventure Bundle up and get outdoors, whether close to home or a drive away. From cross country skiing to skating and hiking, there s no reason to wait until next spring to enjoy Mother Nature. Some of the most exhilarating outdoor activities can only take place at this time of year. Just be sure your family is prepared for any outdoor conditions. Check weather reports ahead of time and be sure to layer up. Remember, that it s possible to get dehydrated even in cooler temperatures, so pack water and sports drinks in an insulated container that won t freeze the contents. Likewise, winter rays can be strong, so wear sunglasses and sunscreen, and pack lip balm with UV protection. Look for tech gear designed for outdoor sports, such as the WSD-F10 Smart Outdoor Watch powered by Android Wear, which features a wide array of tools, including direction, altitude, and atmospheric pressure measurement capabilities, as well as sunrise and sunset time displays, tide graphs and activity graphs. The watch also lets you stay connected on the go, with alerts, weather, maps, voice search and more, and is available online on Google Store, Amazon and in retail stores nationwide. Indoor Fun Staying indoors? There s no need to go stir crazy. There s plenty of fun to be had at home, so put on some slippers and stay awhile. If you have a fireplace -- get it cranking. It s time to make s mores. Then, find fun activities that bring the family together, such as a movie marathon or arts and crafts. The musically inclined can have a family sing-along. You may not have the space for an authentic grand piano in your home, but you don t necessarily need one. New technology, such as the Casio CGP-700 digital piano, features an 88-note scaled hammer action keyboard with replicated ebony and ivory keys, allowing for an authentic grand piano feel. Its interface enables seasoned musicians and beginners alike to choose tones, select rhythms, split and layer sounds, and more. Additionally, the CGP-700 has 550 built-in tones to choose from, including guitar, bass, strings, brass and organ. On that note, consider throwing a family talent show. From singing and playing piano, to telling knock knock jokes, set the stage for performers and make it feel like a real theater by hanging a curtain behind them. With the right mindset, and a few supplies, winter fun can be had anywhere, from the comfort of your living room to the top of a mountain. The disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above his lord. - Matthew 10:24 50 Years Ago News: Carmel Town Attorney Leroy New last week filed a request for the dismissal of a suit against the town filed earlier by five town residents objecting to the annexation of some 500 acres south of the town. 4 4 News How to add a touch of elegance to your traditional Thanksgiving meal (StatePoint) Thanksgiving is a quintessential example of American tradition, and the food and drink on your holiday table is undoubtedly the centerpiece of the holiday. While staples like turkey and stuffing will always have a place at the table, don t be shy about taking a cue from classic French dishes and dining style to add a touch of elegance to your entertaining, says Frederic Barnier, of Maison Louis Jadot, one of the most trusted wine houses in Burgundy. Barnier recommends pairing your turkey dinner with Maison Louis Jadot s Beaujolais-Villages 2014 and Chablis 2015, and serving it alongside this recipe for Pain d Epices -- a French spiced bread, traditional in Burgundy -- which pairs perfectly with Maison Louis Jadot Beaujolais Ingredients: 2 1/2 cups flour 2 tsp. baking soda A pinch of salt 1 tsp. green aniseed 1/2 cup granulated sugar 1/2 cup honey 2 tbsp. softened butter 3 tbsp. skim milk Preparation: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F Using a rolling pin, crush the aniseed Place the flour, baking soda and salt in a bowl and mix Transfer the dry ingredients into the bowl of a stand mixer. Add the aniseed, sugar and honey Add the butter and milk, using the whisk attachment, mix for 5 minutes Line a loaf pan with parchment paper, then pour in the batter. Spread evenly and press down with a fork; bake for 55 minutes Test for doneness; the tip of a knife inserted into the center should come out clean Cool on a rack, then transfer to a serving platter Another delightful French twist to your Thanksgiving feast is Chestnut stuffing. Simply add roasted and chopped chestnuts to your usual stuffing recipe for an elegant French touch. Your turkey and stuffing pairs well with Pinot Noir. Remember that setting, as much as flavor, can elevate your feast. Use seasonal fall flowers and fresh sprigs of herb to lend your table a festive, elegant vibe. This year, offer your guests something special. Look to French food and wine and infuse traditional Thanksgiving dishes with sophisticated flavors. Do You Have A Community Announcement? 5 Sports 5 Millers cruise past Northwest in opener By RICHIE HALL Reporter Sports Editor With a senior-dominated lineup, many of Noblesville's boys basketball games this year should end the way the Millers' first game did. Noblesville led from start to finish in its Wednesday opener, beating Indianapolis Northwest in front of a customary spirited crowd at The Mill. The Millers will play their second game at home as well, hosting another Indianapolis team, Howe, on Saturday night. "Excellent start," said Noblesville coach Brian McCauley, who begins his third season as coach of the Millers. "I was really pleased with our defensive effort in the first quarter." Noblesville only allowed the Space Pioneers two points in the first period, an early layin. That came right after senior McGwire Plumer scored the first basket of the Millers' season. Northwest tied it up, but Noblesville then scored the next 10 points of the quarter while allowing the Space Pioneers none. Plumer had six points, and senior Max Flinchum added four. Flinchum was just getting warmed up for a huge second quarter. He drained four 3-pointers in that period, one that saw the Millers pile up 23 points and take a lead into halftime. Corby Mertens, another senior, made a 3-pointer of his own towards the end of the half. Rico Duncan helped out with a mid-quarter layin; Duncan is another senior who saw varsity time last season. Nolan Ginther is also part of the senior brigade; he made his presence known in the first quarter with three rebounds and a pair of steals. The Space Pioneers cut Noblesville's lead to at the end of the third period, using their own hot shooting. Five of Northwest's six baskets were 3-pointers. The Millers were able to keep things from getting out of hand, though, with the occasional basket and by making their free throws - five of seven in the period. Noblesville cruised through the fourth quarter, scoring 24 points. Beginning at the midway point of the period, the Millers scored 11 unanswered points, with Flinchum getting five of them. He had already made another 3-pointer before the run, and got another long range shot to get Noblesville ahead Flinchum's final tally for the night was 6-of-7 from 3-point range, totaling 28 points. "We really had a poor third quarter, which was disappointing," said McCauley. "We had 10 turnovers in the third quarter, didn't play well at all. And then in the fourth quarter, we were better." The last point for Noblesville was by yet another senior, Ernesto Martinez. A move-in from Mexico, Martinez had the Miller fans screaming for him to get in during the late stages of the game. He finally did, and got more wild cheers when he made a free throw with 50.6 seconds left. While the seniors will be leading the way for Noblesville this year, the underclassmen also had decent games. Junior Ryan Barnes, this year's Miller football quarterback, pulled three rebounds and added a point. Sophomore Grant Gremel got called for a starting position, and was a force on the boards: He led Noblesville with eight rebounds. Gremel scored three points, including two on a fourth-quarter putback. Sophomore Xavier Hines added two free throws in the second quarter. After Flinchum's 28, Plumer added 13 points, while Mertens scored nine and Duncan had six, including a 4-of-4 effort from the line. "All in all, decent start," said McCauley. "We're not where we want to be, but guys had good effort, solid attitudes and it's a good thing to learn from and try to get better for the next game." Lakers Sacramento Phoenix Hawks halt Pacers comeback, win By GREG RAPPAPORT Courtesy nba.com/pacers After trailing by as much as 17 points in the first half, the Pacers battled all the way back into the game. A crafty layup from Monta Ellis brought the Pacers' deficit to just one point, and lifted the crowd at Bankers Life Fieldhouse to its feet, as Indiana trailed with 3:42 remaining in the third quarter. From there, however, Atlanta opened up a deflating 19-2 run spanning the third and fourth quarters, as the Hawks went on to win on Wednesday night. "When we got it down to one, we made a few mistakes, gambled a couple times on defense, a couple of turnovers. All of a sudden, the momentum shifted to the other side," said Pacers head coach Nate McMillan after the game. It was an impressive comeback bid for Indiana, having trailed by nearly 20, but the Hawks, on the second night of a back-toback, summoned the energy to close the game forcefully, using their scoring run that bridged the game's final two quarters. After taking the body blow of what was, at its worst, a 23-4 Hawks run, Indiana mustered yet another late rally, using free throws from Paul George, an and-1 from Jeff Teague, and a 3-pointer from Ellis to break an 8-0 run of their own, leaving the Pacers trailing by 12 points with 5:12 remaining. But just as he had all game, Atlanta center Dwight Howard answered in kind, scoring in the paint to help add to his impressive 23-point, 20-rebound performance against the Pacers. "We just didn t squash down on Dwight Howard. I think he had nine offensive rebounds and that s huge when playing a team like the Hawks. You can t let them get offensive rebounds and extra possessions. You just have to get into a good flow on offense because they re a good defensive team," Thaddeus Young said. If there was one constant of the evening for the Pacers, it was the play of Thad Young, whose 24 points and scrappy plays for loose balls helped give the Pacers a chance against Atlanta. But the play of Howard, combined with the Hawks' final run, proved to be too much for Indiana, as the Hawks snapped a three-game losing streak and the Pacers dropped their third consecutive home game. Young led the way for the Pacers early on, scoring nine consecutive points for Indiana. But on the other end, Howard proved problematic from the get-go for the Pacers, hitting his first four field goal attempts and racking up eight early points, forcing McMillan to call a timeout. From there, the Hawks continued to execute on offense, building a at the conclusion of the first quarter. In the second, the bench units traded baskets until the Hawks began to find a groove. As the quarter wore on, the Hawks' offense began to separate itself, going on a 10-0 run to push its seven-point lead to 17, triggering a McMillan timeout with 7:34 remaining in the half. The gap between the teams was made up primarily of scoring from Howard, who finished the half with 16 points and 11 rebounds. But despite hitting their nadir of 17 points, the Pacers' starting unit was able to rally at the end of the half, using a 16-4 run to chop their halftime deficit down to just five points entering the locker room. In the third quarter, although a Myles Turner 3-pointer kicked off the action, Atlanta got back to business, going on a 9-2 run and forcing McMillan to call timeout with 7:35 left in the quarter. Out of the timeout, however, Indiana's starting unit rallied again, using an 11-3 counter to spring back into the game, at one point trailing just following the Ellis layup. Feeling the game tighten, the Hawks reeled off 7-0 burst to put themselves back out in front, taking a lead into the fourth quarter. That streak of offense from Atlanta ended up turning into the Hawks' gamedefining 23-4 run, all but sealing the game as Indiana trailed by 16 points with 8:54 remaining in the game. In search of answers for how to get back on track, Myles Turner offered a simple prescription while at his locker after the game. "We just need better effort," he said. "And just go out there and show what Pacers basketball is all about."
