2 NCCU Eagles Looking for an Edge in First Season of NCAA Division I Play For decades, the North Carolina Central University men s basketball program has been competitive among its peers in the NCAA Division II ranks. The Eagles have made six trips to the NCAA playoffs in the past 20 years, including a regional title in 1993 and the national championship crown in However, the Eagles will be venturing into unchartered territory during the season, their first as an NCAA Division I program and competing as an independent. I have never been through the transition process before, but I do know that you have to get better players overall, said NCCU head coach Henry Dickerson, who enters his fourth season with the Eagles and ninth as a college head coach after spending five seasons leading the Division I Mocs at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. I am talking about from top to bottom, not just your top 2-3 players. Your last three have to be just as competitive as your top three in order to be successful at this level. We are a young team and most of these guys don t know the magnitude of what we are going into, Dickerson added. They don t have a clue. And sometimes that is good. We have to find an edge that some of the teams we are playing do not have. We are going to have to find that edge. NCCU finished its final season in Division II with a overall record. In their only regular-season game against Division I opposition, the Eagles were within two points of East Carolina University early in the second half, but the Pirates eventually sailed to a victory. Among the team s highlights were victories over the eventual Division II national champions (Barton College, 67-65, Nov. 18, 2006) and three other ranked opponents. However, the Eagles lost 11 letterwinners, including four starters, from last season s squad. With more than 81 percent of the scoring load gone, NCCU will look to its lone returning starter, junior guard Bryan Ayala (6-3, 190, Norfolk, Season Preview Va.), for leadership. Ayala averaged 9.9 points, 4.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 2.2 steals per game a year ago. He is another year older and knows what I expect of him, Dickerson said of the Norfolk, Va. native. We are counting on him for his leadership. NCCU s other returners are junior guard J Mell Walters (5-10, 170, Kinston, N.C.) and sophomore forwards Joshua Worthy (6-5, 205, Lewisville, Texas) and Tremain Holloway (6-5, 205, Rocky Mount, N.C.). Walters appeared in just two games during the campaign, averaging 8.5 points and 6.5 rebounds, before suffering a seasonending injury. Worthy and Holloway provided the Eagles with a boost of energy, especially during a midseason skid. Worthy averaged 2.1 points and 1.6 boards to go along with 17 steals in 24 games, including two as a starter. Holloway played in 14 games in his rookie season, averaging 1.7 points and 1.0 rebounds in 7.3 minutes of action. Senior forward Charles Futrell (6-6, 205, Fayetteville, N.C.) will make a surprise return to the Eagles line-up this season. Futrell, a four-year letterwinner and all-conference receiver on the NCCU football team, joined the basketball team after the start of the campaign when the need for post-players arose. He went on to average 10.0 points and 6.4 rebounds in 23 games to earn conference all-rookie team honors in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Bryan Ayala represents the lone returning starter for the Eagles in (Photo by Eric Rivera) Association (CIAA). Futrell sat out last year s hoops season with an injury and competed in two N.F.L. camps in the spring of 2007 before deciding to return to the hardwood. His return will be a big help because he has played for me and this gives him a full year to play basketball, Dickerson said of Futrell. His athletic ability is unreal. The rest of the team consists of seven newcomers, including three transfers and four true freshmen. I try to recruit the best kids I can, Dickerson said. I don t want to ever stop coaching these kids. Even after basketball, they need some help. I NCCU Men's Basketball 2

3 Season Preview & Schedule am doing my best to prepare these guys to make a living and represent this school after their playing career. It s so important to me that the right people are in this program talented, good citizens and good students. We have some kids now that are good students, good citizens and are tough on the basketball court. If you are not as talented, you need to be tough to win. When asked to assess his squad s talent, Dickerson said, It is difficult to say because we have not played. Plus, you cannot simulate playing the likes of Duke or Florida. I think the talent we have will get better each year. When asked what his biggest fear is heading into the season, Dickerson answered simply, Travel the wear and tear travel take on you. NCCU s inaugural NCAA Division I men s basketball schedule includes several first-time meetings and a handful of ACC regular-season opponents. As an independent without a conference affiliation, the Eagles will be spending a significant amount of time on the road. It s a challenge, but something to look forward to, said junior guard Bryan Ayala of the schedule. If you are not excited about it, then you don t need to be here. NCCU will face 23 opponents for the first time, including three regularseason contests against ACC teams. The Eagles will also test their wings by traveling 22,280 miles (the equivalent of 1,251,473 basketball courts) in 23 road games. The Eagles will tip-off the season with their first-ever regular-season meeting with neighbor Duke University on Nov. 9. The two Durham universities have met on the hardwood in exhibition games in each of the past three seasons ( ). NCCU also has firsttime regular-season ACC match-ups with Wake Forest University (Nov. 19) and North Carolina State University (Jan. 9). As part of the 2007 Blue Ribbon Challenge, NCCU will travel to Rutgers University (Nov. 12), two-time defending national champions the University of Florida (Nov. 14) and North Dakota State University (Nov. 17), before hosting its first home game against Tennessee Tech University (Nov. 21). Of NCCU s 30 total contests, seven will be played at home inside McLendon-McDougald Gym, including the BC Powder Classic on Dec. Averaged 19.6 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists per game as a senior. Averaged 21 points per Originally Published in The Herald-Sun (Durham, N.C.) on Jan. 29, 2007 A miracle on the court By MIKE POTTER : The Herald-Sun DURHAM -- Bryan Ayala isn t supposed to be playing basketball for N.C. Central. At least that s what the doctors said. And in most cases, they would have been right. When Ayala was born 20 years ago in Philadelphia, they doubted he would ever really walk normally, much less run effortlessly up and down the basketball court. He was born with a birth defect, a right clubfoot turned nearly 180 degrees from the proper direction. Three days later, he went home from the hospital with a cast on his leg. They noticed it right away, said his mother, Susan Ayala, who raised her son without his father in the picture. Every week I had to remove the cast and take him to the doctor. The child s first surgery came when he was 9 months old. But he was walking in the cast by the time he was a year old. He said, To heck with the cast, Susan Ayala said. That has seemed to be her son s attitude since he was old enough to have one. But still he knew he was different from most of his classmates. Bryan Ayala wasn t supposed to be playing rough games outside with the other kids. But his mother said she would go pick him up at the park and see him trying to run, his brace left next to a fence somewhere. When the boy was young and his maternal grandfather, Eddie Cox, would see him staring out a window of their Norfolk, Va., home at the other kids playing, Cox would sit him down at a card table and play a game. We used to play a game called tunk, Ayala said of his days as a young card shark. And I declare war all day long. Both mother and son said Cox, who died six years ago, was a major influence in his life. The Eagles guard has five tattoos, one with his mother s first name and another in memory of Pop-Pop. He had one more operation when he was 8 1/2 that put him in a wheelchair for about a year. That seemed to hurt his psyche more than it hurt his leg, his mother said. When Ayala was almost 10, a doctor told him it might be all right to participate in contact sports. His mother reluctantly agreed, and his life hasn t been the same since. In his first recreation-league football game, he played quarterback and scored a touchdown from near the goal line by flipping over the top of the defenders and landing on his backside. Susan Ayala said her son lay on the ground for what seemed like an eternity. She thought something awful might have happened to his leg. But it turned out he had only had the wind knocked Student-Athlete Bios game during the playoffs, helping team win Eastern District Championship. Honors graduate. Personal Born January 20, 1987, in Philadelphia, Pa. out of him. My uncles had to hold my mom back from going onto the field every time I went down, Ayala said with a laugh. But a star had been born on the athletic fields and courts. By the time he was at Granby High, he played wide receiver and free safety on the football team, and did it well enough to make All-Eastern District twice and honorable mention All-State once on the defensive side. He said he ran a 4.49 in the 40 and drew recruiting interest from Wofford and Kent. But Ayala was better at basketball, earning a promotion to the varsity late in his freshman season. He led the Comets to the district championship and he state Class AAA quarterfinals his senior year, averaging 19.6 points, eight rebounds and eight assists along the way. He s smart and a hard worker, said his Granby basketball coach Lonnie Blow, now an assistant coach at Norfolk State. Bryan is the kind of kid who makes you want to be in coaching. Ayala said several big schools, from conferences like the ACC, the Big East and the SEC, scouted him but backed away. He said he thought the leg, which remains noticeably smaller than his other, might have scared them off. But smaller schools like Delaware State, Barton and Shaw did offer him scholarships. And then there was NCCU. Ayala said he and coach Henry Dickerson connected instantly the first time they met. I think I appreciate what he s gone through more since we have a son who is challenged, said Dickerson, whose son, Brandon, about Ayala s age, is affected by autism. I liked his makeup and his demeanor the first time we met. And I knew when I was recruiting him I was recruiting a Division I guard. (NCCU will move up to NCAA Division I next season.) Dickerson called Ayala a good student and a good representative of the NCCU program. I admire what he s able to do, Dickerson said. He can t just roll out of bed and go in the morning -- he has to get up a lot earlier to get his legs ready to go. He s heard some nasty things from the stands on the road -- awful things. But he just keeps playing. NCCU assistant athletic trainer Mike Essa said Ayala has the most unusual congenital condition he faces. The only thing he doesn t do the same as the rest of the team is a conditioning drill where they hop on one leg, Essa said. He doesn t hop on the right one. But Ayala said the leg is getting stronger. At 6 2 and 180 pounds, the sophomore can dunk with ease, and said he s getting a better ability to jump off the right leg for a left-handed layup. Last season was a tale of two halves for him. He came off the bench for the first 14 games before starting the last 14. He averaged 5.1 points per game, led the team in steals (43) and was second in assists (59) and Mother is Susan Ayala. Major at NCCU is Criminal Justice. Received the 2007 NCCU Men s Basketball Academic Award as the student-athlete with the highest grade point average. Dean s List student at NCCU. shot 71.4 percent from the free-throw line. The best game of Ayala s career was this season s opener against Columbus State. He scored 33 points in a win in the opening round of the BC Powder Classic at McLendon-McDougald Gym. The next night he scored 16 in a victory over Barton, including the 3-pointer that hung on the rim and dropped through as time expired to beat the defending Division II East Regional champions. Ayala was an easy choice as the classic s MVP. A natural shooting guard who is spending most of his time at the point, he s averaging 10.6 points, a team-leading 4.3 assists, a team-leading 1.9 steals, 3.9 rebounds and is a 72 percent free-throw shooter. When he signed with NCCU, I didn t believe it! Susan Ayala said of her son s accomplishments. My brothers were all telling me he had a chance to play college ball, but I didn t think they were right. It really was a great day when he signed. And I ve come to see him play every time I could. She also is proud of her son s success in the classroom. He had a 3.5 GPA last semester, she said. But his mama still worries every time he takes a hard fall on the court. His teammates respect him, and they re all concerned for him, too, Dickerson said. Every time he goes down, they re right there to ask him if he s all right NCCU Men's Basketball

40 NCCU S YOUNG SELECTED BY SEATTLE IN NBA DRAFT North Carolina Central University senior David Young had his dream fulfilled on June 24, 2004, when the Seattle Supersonics selected the All-CIAA guard with the 41st overall pick in the 2004 NBA Draft. Young, NCCU s first NBA draft pick in 21 years, sat alone in an Atlanta hotel room when he saw his name flash on the television as the 12th player chosen in the second round. Wow, he said, God is good. After ending his college career as the Eagles top scorer in with 20.5 points per game, Young faced a long and tough journey around the NBA workout circuit. I have endured and persevered through a lot of tough times. Young said reflecting on his life and basketball career. I have always dreamed about playing in the NBA. I got a second opportunity at North Carolina Central University and now my dream has come true. Young is NCCU's second-highest NBA draft pick, trailing only legendary Boston Celtic and Hall-of-Famer Sam Jones. 41 NCCU Eagles Inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame JOHN B. McLENDON Enshrined: As a coach on April 30, 1979 Born: April 5, 1915 in Hiawatha, KS Died: October 8, 1999 NCCU: Head Coach, John B. McLendon s contributions to the sport of basketball are virtually innumerable. His advisor at the University of Kansas was the inventor of basketball, Dr. James Naismith. At North Carolina College from 1937 to 1952, and as head basketball coach from 1940 to 1952, he pioneered basketball s full court game, using such strategies as the full court press, the full court zone (now known as the zone press), the open center offense whose variants include the four corners, the rotating pivot, and the double-pivot. In 38 years as a head coach, he achieved a collegiate coaching record of 523 wins to 165 losses for a.760 winning percentage, including a record at NCC. He was also the first black coach in a professional basketball league (with the Cleveland Pipers in the American Basketball League in 1961) and the first black coach at a predominantly white university (Cleveland State employed him in June 1966). Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Bio: John B. McLendon s engaging personality made him a popular basketball figure for more than 60 years. His extraordinary knowledge of basketball history made him one of the game s leading ambassadors. But, it is his coaching resume that makes many in the profession envious. McLendon, who learned basketball from Dr. James Naismith as an undergraduate at Kansas, is the first coach in history to win three consecutive national titles. McLendon earned this honor by guiding Tennessee State to the 1957, 1958 and 1959 NAIA national championships. McLendon championed for heightened awareness of basketball at all-black colleges, and helped initiate an era of integrated basketball. McLendon s well-rounded coaching background included positions at the collegiate, AAU and professional level. He coached North Carolina College, Hampton Institute, Tennessee State, Kentucky State and Cleveland State along with the Cleveland Pipers (NIB-ABL) and the Denver Rockets (ABA). Named the 1958 NAIA Coach of the Year, McLendon coached teams that won eight CIAA titles between 1941 and 1952, the NIBL and AAU championships in 1961, and the ABL Eastern Division crown in McLendon, who has traveled the world promoting basketball, wrote two books, Fast Break Basketball and The Fast Break Game. Eagles in the Basketball Hall of Fame SAM JONES Enshrined: As a player on April 30, 1984 Born: June 24, 1933 in Laurinburg, NC NCCU: Student-Athlete, / North Carolina College Playing Highlights: Scored 1,745 points playing for Hall of Fame coach John McLendon; Three-time All-Conference; Enshrined in NAIA Hall of Fame (1962). Pro Highlights (NBA Boston Celtics, ): All-NBA Second Team ( ); Five-time NBA All-Star (1962, , 1968); Member of 10 championship teams ( and ); Tallied 15,411 points (17.7 ppg) in his 12-year career; Scored 2,909 points in 154 playoff games (18.9 ppg), 15th best in history; NBA 25th Anniversary Team (1970); NBA 50th Anniversary Team (1996). Hall of Fame Bio: At six-foot-four, Sam Jones was the prototype of the tall guard who could run the floor, bang the boards and had a rangy offensive game that gave opponents fits. One of the Jones Boys in Boston, Sam teamed with K.C. in the Celtics backcourt to create havoc in NBA arenas around the country. Jones favored an unorthodox but highly effective bank shot that became the muscle behind his and Boston s 10 NBA championships, including eight in a row ( ). As a collegian, Jones was an offensive firehouse scoring 1,745 points while playing for Hall of Fame coach John McLendon at all-black North Carolina College. Jones was not a collegiate All-America and was a relative unknown, but that didn t sway Red Auerbach, who drafted Sam in the first round of the 1957 draft. Jones didn t disappoint the Boston faithful. His 12-year NBA career included five All-Star Game appearances, 871 regular season games and 154 playoff games. Considered one of the NBA s most prolific graceful shooters, Jones scored 15,411 points (17.7 ppg), plus 2,909 (18.9 ppg) more in the playoffs. Considered one of the fastest NBA guards with superb court vision and savvy, Jones led the Celtics in scoring three times, averaging a careerhigh 25.9 points in An extremely popular player, in 1970 Jones was selected to the NBA Silver Anniversary Team (1970), a composition of the greatest NBA stars of the league s first 25 years. He later would be named one of the top 50 players in history when the NBA celebrated its 50th Anniversary in NCCU Men's Basketball

Vault surveyed 512 recruiters who identified 25 underrated schools, and the NCCU School of Law was ranked at number 14. NCCU and the African American Jazz Caucus are partnering to form the NCCU/ AAJC Jazz Research Institute (NAJRI) in an effort to preserve the integrity of jazz as an African American art form. One of the functions of the Institute will be to address the critical artistic and economic situation of jazz in the African American community as well as develop other initiatives such as a North Carolina Hall of Fame dedicated to highlighting the work of jazz artists from North Carolina. In an effort to bring more study abroad options to students, NCCU has been accepted as a member of the International Student Exchange Program (ISEP), a nonprofit membership organization that provides affordable and diverse study abroad and exchange opportunities to students around the world. NCCU is only one of four historically black college or university in the ISEP network. ISEP membership makes it possible for NCCU students to study abroad at over 135 different universities in 39 countries. The university s athletics programs have enjoyed regional and national recognition for years. Fifteen men s and women s sports teams participate in NCAA and CIAA competition at the Division II level. In 2006, NCCU was the CIAA Champions in football, and women s crosscountry, basketball, and volleyball. NCCU is the first historically black institution in the nation to have an athletic training education program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. Built upon the motto of Truth and Service, NCCU is a university committed to preparing and equipping students with the knowledge and skills to compete in the global marketplace. NCCU Highlights NCCU was the fastest growing institution in the University of North Carolina System. At 5.5 percent for fall 2006, NCCU surpassed 48 the UNC System s average rate of growth of 3.1 percent. Black Enterprise magazine named NCCU one of the Top 50 Colleges for African Americans in the nation in its September 2006 edition. NCCU was ranked No. 30. The Golden LEAF Foundation awarded $2.3 million to the Biomanufacturing Research Institute and Technology Enterprise. In 2006, NCCU s School of Law students passed the State Bar Examination at a rate of 86%; the highest of any other historically black school in the county. NCCU received accreditation of its bachelor s and master s programs in business administration from the Assembly of American Colleges and Schools of Business International. NCCU received a $150,000 grant from the Darden Restaurants Foundation to establish a Culinary Teaching Laboratory at the university to support its Hospitality and Tourism Program. An endowment in the amount of $100,000 was awarded for the Christopher S. Meldrum Chemistry Scholarship Fund to establish a scholarship for chemistry majors. NCCU became the CIAA Champions in men s football and baseball and women s cross country, softball, basketball and volleyball. NCCU led in recruiting National Achievement Scholars. NCCU was No. 3 in the state and tied for third place among historically black colleges and universities across the nation.
