1 Interdisciplinary Lesson Plan Name: Brandon Minglin Date of Lesson: # of Students: 25 Subject Area: Language Arts Standards: 1Standard 5: Demonstrate responsible personal and social behavior in physical activity settings : Exhibit independence and ability to succeed in groups. Standard 7: Understands that physical activity provides the opportunity for enjoyment, challenge, self expression, and social interaction Exhibit positive feelings about participation in physical activity Engage in the challenge of new activities. Performance Objectives Cognitive: Standard 7: Understands that physical activity provides the opportunity for enjoyment, challenge, self expression, and social interaction : Exhibits positive feelings about participation in physical activity The student will be able to identify why it is important to exercise 9 out of 10 times. Affective Standard 5: Demonstrate responsible personal and social behavior in physical activity settings : Exhibit independence and ability to succeed in groups

2 The student will appropriately be able to define his or her role on the team after the game is over with 90% efficiency. Psychomotor: Standard 7: Understands that physical activity provides the opportunity for enjoyment, challenge, self expression, and social interaction : Engage in challenge of new activities. The student will fully participate in every game while showing group participation 100% of the time. Equipment/ Materials There are a few materials needed for this game. First off, a large space, preferably a gym, will be needed to play this game. This game can also be played outside as long as there are basketball hoops. Basketball hoops are the main requirement as the whole game revolves around shooting a basketball. Next, you will need two basketballs, one for each team. Materials provided by the teacher would entitle the paper with the letters provided on it. Relatively inexpensive equipment as long as school has a main gym for class. Introduction/ Set Induction One of the main objectives of this game is to have students work together as a team. So explaining the importance of teamwork to start off class is crucial. An introductory activity may be having students shoot baskets for a few minutes before regrouping to explain the rest of the activity. Teacher could also go over some of the classes spelling list for that week to review with students while still integrating Language Arts. Explanation and Demonstration

3 In this section of the lesson, the teacher will provide explanation for the upcoming activity in more detail. In this game, students will be working together as a team, while still working as individuals to achieve an overall goal. The overall goal is to spell out the word that is given to the team at the beginning of the game. Each team will be assigned a word; each team will have the same length of word. (i.e. each team will have a 7 letter word that they have to try to figure out.) This will be a race between two teams to see who can spell out their word faster. After students are split into two teams, they will shoot free throws, if a student misses the free throw, they will run to retrieve the ball and give it to the next person in line. But if the student makes the free throw they will run and turn over a piece of paper that will have a letter on the other side. They will the retrieve the ball and give it to the next student for them to shoot the next free throw. After all the letters have been turned over, students will work together as a team to figure out the word scramble. (i.e. after all letters are turned over, students will figure out as a team that the letters spell out giraffe) You could have two students from the class come out and provide a demonstration of making and missing the free thrown and how you handle each situation. Guided Practice: Just so that all students understand the game fully a practice round may be smart. Have students count off by one s and two s to make both teams. Students will then perform a practice round where at any time the teacher can intervene and instruct and correct if a student is playing the game wrong. Also students may be informed at the beginning of the practice round to play a little slower so that everyone understands how the game is played.

4 Group Activity: After the students have performed the practice round they will be eager to perform the game fully. At the blow of a whistle or the teacher shouting GO, the students may begin to play the game in its entirety. After students have made all of their shots and have turned over all of their letters they will run to wherever the letters may be at and arrange them in the order that the word is spelled. The students will then shout the name of the word they were given. The first team done wins, but their word must be spelled correctly. After they have completed the first game, they may continue to play more games with different, longer or shorter, words. If the game becomes to difficult for the students to make free throws the line may be moved closer to the basket, but all students must shoot and retrieve their own ball as long as they are physically able to do so. Closure: After the completion of the game students will be instructed as to where they are to put the materials back at. The class will then circle up and sit down for a minute or two before they go back to class. This will give the students a time to settle down before returning to the classroom and also offer a time of reflection for the next time the game is played. Students can reflect on the game and offer advice about how to more effectively play the game next time. They will comment on what they did right and also what they could have done better. They can also answer whether they found the game fun and why games like shooting a basketball can also be fun when we incorporate math, science, language arts and other subjects. References:
