2 Media Information Media Coverage The UTSA Sports Information office assists members of the media with their coverage of Roadrunners Athletics by providing player and coach interviews, feature ideas, pregame notes and updated statistics. In addition to the 2008 tennis media guide, media members may check UTSA s official athletics Web site goutsa.com for the latest information on all the department s 16 intercollegiate sports. There you will find match recaps, box scores, updated statistics, weekly notes, player and coach biographies, schedules, rosters, photos and archives of most tennis matches. Interviews All interviews with coaches and student-athletes must be arranged by contacting tennis contact Carlos Valdez. Telephone interviews are available to the media on a call-back basis at a time that is convenient for the coach or student-athlete. Post-match interviews with coaches and players will be conducted courtside following a 10-minute cooling off period. Practices UTSA welcomes all media to attend tennis practices during the season. Please call the sports information office for practice times and requests for interviews. In most cases, coaches and student-athletes are available before and after practice. 3 The newly-renovated UTSA Tennis Center, which hosted the Southland Conference Men s & Women s Tennis Championships last spring, has drawn rave reviews from both opposing coaches and fans alike. Prior to the 2005 season, the facility underwent a face lift that included upgraded stands, covered seating for spectators, court resurfacing, new fencing, new wind screens and coaches office improvements. Complete with 10 lighted Laykold courts, the center courts are surrounded by spectator grandstands that can host 800 spectators. The practice area, complete with warmup backboards, can accomodate six to eight players. The Patio Club area debuted in and has been a huge success with nearly all of the seats being sold during the last three seasons. Also located within the complex is a four-room building that houses both the men s and women s tennis offices. The tennis center previously has hosted the SLC Tournament in 1997 (men), 2001 (men & women), 2002 (men & women), 2004 (men), 2005 (men & women) and 2007 (men & women). UTSA Tennis Center

4 2008 Men s Season Outlook Now in his ninth year at the helm of UTSA s men s tennis program, Dr. Oliver Trittenwein looks to lead his team back to a Southland Conference Championship in Trittenwein welcomes back four letterwinners from last year s squad that posted a overall record, a 4-2 mark in league play and their third consecutive appearance in the SLC Tournament Championship match. Among the players returning this season are 2007 SLC Freshman of the Year and first-team performer Rodrigo Morgado, two-time all-conference honoree Adam Becker and 2006 SLC Freshman of the Year Andre Moreira. Andre will be a solid performer for us at No. 3. Trittenwein said. He worked hard over the summer to get healthy and I m looking for him to have a great year like he had as a freshman. Expected to move up in the lineup is Becker, the squad s lone senior and team captain. After playing most of 2007 at the No. 6 slot, the Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, native will see action at either the Nos. 4 or 5 spots this year. He tied Morgado for the team lead with 15 wins and was 5-1 in league play en route to firstteam All-SLC honors. Our guys have prepared themselves for the season. Trittenwein said. After finishing as runner-ups the last three years, they worked hard in the offseason and have set a goal of advancing to the NCAA Tournament. We showed a lot improvement during the fall season by playing at a higher level. Singles Junior Robin Fernandes, who posted a career-high 14 wins last season, will lead the lineup this year at the No. 1 position. He posted an 8-6 mark at the spot a year ago, including a 4-2 record in SLC play. Fernandes ended fall play on a high note by winning the Texas Invitational Consolation Championship. I m excited about Robin being at the top of our lineup this season. Trittenwein said. He stayed in San Antonio and worked hard over the summer to get better at his game. Playing in the No. 2 slot will be Morgado. The Balneário Camboriú, Brazil, native had a freshman season to remember, as he tied Becker for the team-lead with 15 wins, including a 12-2 record at the No. 2 position and a perfect 6-0 mark in SLC play. Morgado earned SLC Freshman of the Year and first-team all-conference honors for his efforts. Rodrigo is a team player and he will do everything possible to get a win. Trittenwein said. He is a great competitor who will be tough to beat this season. Moreira, a junior who has racked up 21 victories in his first two seasons, will man the No. 3 position this year. He was able to register a 13-4 record (7-2 at No. 3) in 2007 despite dealing with nagging injuries throughoutt the season. The Campinas, Brazil, native posted a 4-2 mark in SLC play. Robin Fernandes (left) and Adam Becker will form UTSA s top doubles team this season after posting a 9-3 record last year. Adam worked hard over the summer to get stronger and quicker. Trittenwein said. Playing against good competitors over the summer and in the fall built his confidence level up and it has allowed me to place him in the middle of our rotation. Freshman Daniel Moreiras comes in after a highly-successful career at San Antonio s Churchill High School. He posted a combined 65-3 singles and doubles record as a senior and was named the 2007 San Antonio Express-News Player of the Year. Moreiras will play at the No. 6 position this spring. Incoming freshman Maximilian Stratmann has a wealth of international playing experience and the southpaw should be a difficult matchup in his inaugural campaign. Doubles Becker, a 2006 first-team All-SLC doubles honoree, and Fernandes will pair up for the top spot for the second consecutive season after leading the team with a 9-3 record (6-3 at No. 1) a year ago. After that, Trittenwein will have several options to fill the other two spots. Moreira (seven wins) and Morgado (10) could be teamed up at the No. 2 position, while Moreiras and Stratmann could be paired at No. 3. Schedule The Roadrunners are slated to play a total of 19 matches this season, including a full ledger of six Southland Conference contests. The 13-match non-league schedule features a season-opening contest at national power Texas (Feb. 3). This year s SLC Tournament is scheduled for April on the campus of Stephen F. 5 2008 Women s Season Outlook The Erin Boisclair era got off to a successful start in 2007, as UTSA posted a 12-9 overall record and 6-5 mark in Southland Conference play. Highlights of the season included a six-match winning streak from Feb. 10-March 10 and three players earning Capital One Bank/SLC All-Academic honors. With six letterwinners returning this year, the future is bright for the Roadrunners. can easily be moved up to the No. 1 slot. That would give us an advantage because we d have two players that can play at No. 1. Tanya Hasking, the lone senior on this year s squad, went 9-9 last season. This year s team captain played at the No. 4 slot and tallied an 8-5 record at that position. Boisclair will rely on Hasking s leadership skills this year. This team worked hard in the offseason, putting long hours on the court and in the weight room to improve themselves and to get ready for the upcoming season. Boisclair said. Their hard work paid off during the fall season, as they were able to compete and be successful. Singles UTSA returns its top two players in juniors Monika Drabkova and Karen Scida. The pair combined for 25 wins last season. Drabkova led the squad with a career-high 13 wins a year ago, including a team-leading nine in SLC play. The Prague, Czech Republic, native had eight of her victories at the No. 5 position and she also played at every slot but No. 1 last year. Monika is the type of player that will do whatever it takes to get a win for her team. Boisclair said. I m looking for her to play at any spot in the lineup and her versatility gives us a competitive edge over other teams. After beginning the year at the No. 1 position, Scida was moved to the No. 3 spot where she posted a 9-2 record. She closed out the season playing at No. 1 and responded with three wins in six tries. The Tucuman, Argentina, native finished the year with 12 victories, which ranked second on the club. Scida, who has 25 victories in her first two seasons, will play at the No. 1 or No. 2 positions in Karen made a huge leap last year from playing at the No. 3 singles to being our top player. Boisclair said. She did a lot over the summer to get prepared for the season and is a player that wants to play in the NCAAs this year. Junior Nathalie Wallin played in 18 matches a year ago, including 11 at the No. 1 position. She battled through injuries most of the season, but won six matches, including four at the No. 1 spot. Nathalie has the ability to be our top player, but moving her down our lineup will benefit us because of her experience of playing at the No. 1 position. Boisclair said. If she gets on a winning streak, she Monika Drabkova returns for her junior campaign after leading the Roadrunners with 13 wins in singles play a year ago. Tanya is the lone senior and has the most experience on this team. Boisclair said. Her teammates will look to her for guidance this season and she will play in the middle of our lineup. Meanwhile, junior Eva Silvester (five wins in 2007) and sophomore Holly Phillips (six) will see action at the bottom of the lineup this season. Eva has done a good job in her limited action, Boisclair said. She is a hard-worker and has the respect of her teammates. Holly made good strides towards the end of the season and she should be a solid player at the bottom of the lineup this season. Boisclair expects freshman Caroline Dedering to see action at either the No. 3 or No. 4 positions. She had an impressive fall campaign, winning matches in both singles and doubles. Caroline is the type of player that is willing to learn and improve every day,. Boisclair said. She is going to surprise some people and have a good season. Doubles Hasking and Scida return as the Roadrunners top doubles team after posting a squad-best 13 wins, including seven in conference action, a year ago. Meanwhile, Drabkova and Phillips are back and they will open the year at the No. 2 position. They teamed up for five victories at the No. 3 slot, including four in SLC play, in Boisclair has several options for the No. 3 spot. Wallin had eight wins in 2007 and has 11 in her two seasons as a Roadrunner. She will team up with Dedering or Silvester. Schedule The Roadrunners are slated to play a total of 20 matches this season, including a full ledger of 11 Southland Conference contests.
