North Carolina has appeared in 24 bowl games and has an overall record of Carolina ranks fourth in the ACC and 26th in the country in all-time bowl appearances. According to the USA Today, the Continental Tire Bowl is the nation s brainiest bowl when matching up graduation rates. North Carolina improved from last season s record of 2-10 to 6-5 in 2004, an improvement of +4 in the win column. UTEP (+6) is the only other program in the country with a greater improvement. Iowa State and Louisiana-Monroe also improved by four wins. Carolina coach John Bunting is making his second appearance in a bowl game as a head coach. Bunting guided the Tar Heels to a victory over Auburn in the 2001 Peach Bowl. Bunting was 0-2 in bowl games as a player at UNC. SETTING THE SCENE Predicted to finish 10th in the 11-team Atlantic Coast Conference at the preseason media kickoff, North Carolina enters the 2004 Continental Tire Bowl tied for third in the ACC and 26th nationally in the Sagarin computer rankings. The Tar Heels (6-5 overall, 5-3 ACC) are looking to win their sixth straight bowl game and finish the season with wins in five of their last seven games. North Carolina and Marshall are the only two schools in the country to win their last five bowl games. Carolina enters the Continental Tire Bowl with plenty of momentum after finishing the second half of the season with wins over NC State, Miami, Wake Forest and Duke. The only losses were to No. 18 Virginia Tech and No. 5 Utah. No. 25 Boston College (8-3, 4-2 Big East) is the eighth ranked team the Tar Heels have faced this season. Carolina has faced the nation s second-most difficult schedule and has played more ranked teams than any other school in the country. The series with Boston College is tied 1-1, and this is the first meeting between the two schools in a bowl game. The last time the Tar Heels faced a Big East team in a bowl game was 1997 when Carolina defeated Virginia Tech, 42-3 in the Toyota Gator Bowl. Virginia Tech is now a member of the ACC. Carolina is second in the ACC in total offense, averaging yards per game. The Tar Heels are fourth in rushing offense (182.7), third in passing (210.4) and fourth in scoring offense (26.8 ppg). TAR HEEL TURNAROUND Following a disappointing loss at Utah on October 16, North Carolina limped home to Chapel Hill 3-4 overall and looking ahead at a schedule that featured difficult home games No. 4 Miami and No. 18 Virginia Tech and road games at Wake Forest and Duke. What followed was one of the most memorable turnarounds in school history. First, the Tar Heels knocked off No. 4 Miami, 31-28, beating a top five team for the first time ever. After a three-point loss to the Hokies, Carolina beat Wake Forest, 31-24, when Darian Durant connected with Jesse Holley in the final two minutes and safety Gerald Sensabaugh picked off Wake s final offensive play of the game with just nine seconds remaining. In the season finale Duke, Carolina reclaimed the Victory Bell with a win. Three days later, head coach John Bunting accepted a bid to the Continental Tire Bowl in Charlotte. SIMILAR TO 2001 The 2004 season is strikingly similar to the 2001 season, John Bunting s first as head coach. That year, Carolina started 0-3 and was written off by most observers. Then Carolina upset No. 6 Florida State, 41-9, and finished the year with wins in eight of the next 10 games, STRIKING SIMILARITIES Overall Record ACC Record Big Win 41-9 (No. 6 FSU) (No. 4 Miami) Stretch Run Won 8 of 10 Won 4 of 6 Bowl Game W, Auburn Boston College 1
