25 Organized Activities Basketball: If you do not play by the rules, you do not play. Good sportsmanship is the standard. One person should be agreed upon to call the fouls in the game. If teams have difficulty playing a fair game even with the student referee, the game will be stopped. The penalty for a foul is a take out for the team that did not foul. Basketball is not a contact sport. Only the person with the basketball can hold the court. Students may not hang from the net, rim or support bars. Kicking the basketball is never allowed. All basketball shots from half court or less. While playing half court, only 4 students from each side may be on the court at a time. Rotate in, one at a time, after their team makes a basket. Basketball or basketball games have priority over other games for use of the basketball court. Football: Touch football only. Tackling, pushing, or hitting is not allowed. Play only on the field Not on the blacktop. No kicking the football on the blacktop. Kickball: Play only on the field. Decide which team is up first. The other team is out field. You may not throw the ball at a runner. You must tag them out. After three outs the other team is up. Each runner that crosses home plate is a run for that team. Handball: The object of the game is to keep the ball in play without committing a foul Is to be played with a soft rubber ball 6 or larger 2-4 players play on court with backboard Player take turns hitting the ball against the wall. The players hit the ball so it bounces once before hitting the wall. When it is a player s turn, the player hits the ball before it bounces twice9 the ball does not have to bounce). Serving- The server (or senior player starts play by throwing the ball so it hits the ground then bounces off the wall within the playing boundaries. Player 2 hits the ball with a closed fist towards the wall before it bounces twice. If it successfully bounces off the wall with the boundaries, the server has a chance to keep the ball in play. Play continues until a player commits a foul. A player may reject 2 serves, but must hit the third serve. If the third serve is not playable or not played, both players are out. Fouls: o The ball does not bounce once on thee ground before hitting the wall
26 o The ball hits below the line on the ball wall (on line is ok). o The ball hits outside the line (on the line is ok). o The player hits the ball with an open hand o The ball doesn t hit the wall o A player is hit by his/her own ball after it has hit the wall CAFETERIA EXPECTATIONS Enter through the doors closest to the playground area. Exit through the north doors. Stay in your seat. Talk with quiet voices. Sit only at the tables assigned to your class. Eat only your own food. Keep it in front of you. Food from home that has not been eaten should be taken home. You may throw your trash away when you are dismissed. You will be dismissed when your area is clean on top and under the table. Use only the playground bathrooms. CONSEQUENCES FOR INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR It is our intention to treat all students with firm, fair and consistent discipline. Before any consequences are imposed, students are counseled to discuss the problem and their actions. They are encouraged to ascertain an acceptable and appropriate resolution for the present and future situations. This progression of disciplinary steps may include the following: 1 st Offense Warning of repeat offense or severity / inappropriateness of offense. Recess Behavior Slip and/or Pink Slip sent home. 2 nd Offense Loss of recess. Recess Behavior Slip and/or Pink Slip sent home. Teacher calls home. 3 rd Offense Sent to office. Appropriate time out in the office or another classroom. Recess Behavior Slip and/or Pink Slip sent home. Teacher calls home. 4 th Offense Sent to office. Principal or designee phones parent. In-house or home suspension. The fourth Pink Slip received in each trimester will result in the student missing the next class/grade level field trip. Additional Pink Slips may result in missing additional field trips in each trimester. Every student will begin each new trimester with zero Pink Slips. STUDENT DRESS AND APPEARANCE The major responsibility for dress and grooming is placed upon the student and the student s parents. The following guidelines are intended to define appropriate student attire and personal grooming. The purpose is to prevent disruption of the classroom environment, encourage appropriate dress for the workplace, eliminate disturbances among students in attendance, and minimize student distractions so as not to interfere with the educational process. It is also intended to help protect the health, safety, and welfare of the individual student and provide for the best interest of the entire student body. Recognizing that contemporary trends do not always align with school dress expectations, the responsibility of adherence to these expectations is placed upon the student and their parents. The
27 administration reserves the right to decide the appropriateness of the student s attire. Inappropriately dressed students will be expected to change clothes. Dress should be modest, neat, clean and compatible with educational activities. For safety reasons, shoes must be worn at all times. Sandals must have a strap around the heel. Athletic shoes are recommended on P.E. days. Soles and heels higher than 1 inch are not recommended. Personal cleanliness must be attended to before entering the classroom. Midriffs are to be covered. When raising their hand during classroom activities, the midriff should not be exposed. Shorts may be worn but must be tailored shorts such as Bermuda, or walking shorts. Shorts and skirts must be fingertip length or longer. Cut-off shorts must be hemmed and meet the length requirement described above. Swimming trunks, jogging shorts, athletic type short-shorts, ragged, or shorts with holes will not be allowed. Halter, tube, and see-through tops are not appropriate for school. Emblems, words and pictures on clothing should be appropriate to the educational atmosphere for kindergarten through sixth grade students. Any references to drugs, alcohol, satanic themes, sex, violence or drug affiliation are inappropriate and will not be allowed. If students wear hats to school, they are expected to remove them any time they are indoors. Pants and shorts need to be fitted at the waist (with or without a belt), not oversized, baggy, or saggy type. Hair shall be clean and neatly groomed. Hair may not be sprayed by any coloring that would drip when wet. Students are only permitted to use natural hair colors (blonde, brown, black or red) when dying their hair. Wear any make-up other than clear lip gloss, natural color concealer/foundation or moisturizer. Advanced notice will be given to parents and students when these standards may be altered for special events, i.e., play-days, picnics, physical education, etc.
