The Lady Hawks have dropped two straight contests, both to ranked opponents, after starting the year off with three consecutive wins - one of which came on the road against the Truett-McConnell Lady Bears. In that game, an Shorter victory, Lady Hawk sophomore post Brittney Smith posted a career-high 13 points to go along with five rebounds as Shorter took a lead into halftime and never looked back. Allison Danner scored 11 points to give Shorter a pair of players in double figures and senior Tamara Weatherby notched a game-high four assists in addition to five points. Despite losses to No. 12 Cumberlands and fifth-ranked Lee University, the Lady Hawks still boast one of the top defenses in the country, ranking second in the NAIA in three-point field goal percentage defense (17.0 percent), third in scoring defense (47.0 points per game) and fourth in field goal percentage defense, holding opponents to 27.9 percent shooting. Shorter has surrendered more than 47 points just once in its first five games, allowing 60 to the high-octane Cumberlands attack. Truett-McConnell, who will join the Southern States Athletic Conference next season as a full-time member, is seeking its first win of the year. Symone Hampton, who scored 21 points in the Lady Bears first match up with Shorter, paces her squad at 13.9 points per game. Willani Love is putting up 11.4 points per outing. It was terrifying. My gynecologist felt a large lump in my left breast during a routine exam. He sent me for a mammogram as quickly as possible, but I had to wait and worry over the weekend since the lump was discovered on a Friday afternoon. It was all a fast blur from that moment on. I went from my gynecologist, to the radiologist, to a surgeon, to an oncologist, to a physical therapist. I had five surgeries, twelve chemotherapy treatments, and physical therapy within eight months. And, all the while I was working full-time and raising my son alone (no family in the state and no one to help). It was hard. I was always afraid of needles and here I was being poked and prodded to the point of tears. They put a port in my chest to make it easier to disperse my many chemo drugs. I quickly lost all of my normally thick hair after my first monster chemo treatment of Adriamycin. I became horribly ill each night after treatments. I also took Cytoxan and Taxol. But, definitely the hardest part was the extreme fatigue. I was taking chemo, in to work each day at 8 a.m., and raising a child alone. I had to drop out of graduate school temporarily since my surgeries made me miss classes and I was too weak to handle school and work. It was hard very hard to function and think straight for the weakness. My memory was affected. But, having detailed all the unpleasantness, there was an upside. My doctors were incredible! They were all so skilled and caring. I will forever be grateful to them for their care, especially my gynecologist who even prayed with me. My church friends brought meals, my friends and family came from out of state to take me to my surgeries and treatments (and rub on my feet). And, my boss at USC took me to a joint head shaving (he had his head shaved while I had mine shaved and he paid for my cut), which I wrote a short story about. Also, I discovered how strong I am. I was able to put on a hat and go to work each day with a bald head. I was able to take my chemo and two mastectomies (separate times) with courage. I even dated some during that period (some awkward stories there!)! My young son had to help me and put up with mother being tired all the time, but it made him even more independent and caring. He would have to carry the laundry in from the outside laundry room and help with other tasks. He was my motivation and the reason I was able to keep going. So, now I am thirteen years cancer free and so very grateful for that early diagnosis and treatment. I am indebted to those who were so good to me during that very difficult time in my life. I am also very indebted to my husband of two years. I feared that no man would want me after two mastectomies and that I would never feel comfortable around a man again. My husband never had a problem with my imperfect body or my history of illness. In fact, he got up many mornings at 5 a.m. to drive me to appointments and surgeries in Atlanta to undergo yet a third reconstruction. He was supportive, understanding, and, most of all, there for me, willing to miss precious sleep and golf days so I would not have to go it alone as I did the first time. I have been blessed to find such an accepting and loving helpmate. I tell women that they can get through and move past mastectomies, chemotherapy, loss of hair, and physical and emotional exhaustion. There is another side and they will be stronger than ever. Neither death nor life will ever seem as scary again. I m not sorry for my experience but I do hope we find a cure soon so much pain can be avoided. I have been able to use my experience to be more understanding and to bring some comfort to other women who have been diagnosed. It is amazing how many women you come in contact with who have had a breast cancer diagnosis. There are several at my workplace alone. Until we find a preventive cure, women must get checked regularly (and early I was only 32 years old!), and keep up with treatment. If I had not been seeing my doctor as recommended, I would not be here today. Too, women who are diagnosed need to take advantage of all the help available to them: Go to the support meetings at your local hospital or clinic; let your friends and family help let them take you to treatments, help around the house, bring you meals, help with kids; let your husband or boyfriend be a support to you; let your co-workers help. Any of us could be in the same situation any time. We need to all support and understand what those who are ill and going through treatment are dealing with and be as compassionate and helpful as possible to them during that time. It could be our time to need help down the road. And, we need to allow ourselves to accept help. We may be in a position to help others when we are well again. 3 Shorter Women s Basketball Game Notes, Page 3 Numerical Roster HEAD COACH VIC MITCHELL Vic Mitchell returns for his 20th season at the helm of the Shorter College women s basketball program. Over the past 19 seasons, Mitchell has coached 42 Academic All-Conference selections, 23 All- Conference selections, 13 NAIA Scholar-Athlete selections, three NAIA All- Americans, including one three-time performer and another two-time selection, two Conference Freshmen of the Year, two Conference Players of the Year, one Kodak All-American and two NAIA National Emil S. Liston Award winners, including recipient Whitni Tucker. On Feb. 26, 2009, Mitchell won his 300th game at Shorter with a win over Southern States Athletic Conference foe Reinhardt College, the school from which Mitchell came to Shorter in The Lady Hawks have turned in back-to-back 20-win seasons, going in and posting a last season en route to advancing to the SSAC Tournament semifinals. In his fifth season as head coach of the Lady Hawks in , Mitchell guided Shorter to the regular season conference championship. In , Mitchell s charges went and earned a trip to the NAIA National Tournament, finishing the season ranked No. 25 in the country. During his tenure at Shorter, Mitchell has been named Conference Coach of the Year twice while leading the Lady Hawks to four, 20-win campaigns. Mitchell graduated from the University of Georgia in 1984 with both his undergraduate and Master s degrees. During his academic career at Georgia, Mitchell served as an undergraduate manager and graduate assistant coach for the men s basketball team. He was part of the squad that reached the Final Four of the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) and also worked with the Bulldogs team that advanced to the Final Four of the NCAA Men s Basketball National Tournament.
