4 Shorter Lady Hawk Basketball Message from the Director of Athletics Dear Hawk Family: It is my great pleasure to welcome in another exciting season of Shorter College basketball. A year has passed since last season, and our Hawks and Lady Hawks athletic teams have completed what is arguably the best year in the history of Shorter College Athletics. As always, our goal is for Shorter to be recognized as an outstanding option for student-athletes who are looking for academic excellence, spiritual growth, and a challenging athletic experience. In conjunction with this goal, we have been blessed with the best in both student-athletes and coaches; whether in competition, in the classroom or in the community. During the past year, thirteen of our teams finished the year in the NAIA Top-25 for their respective sport, and at the conclusion of the year, Shorter placed 33rd in the nation out of nearly 300 NAIA member schools in the NACDA Director s Cup. Bill Peterson Director of Athletics In addition, we graduated a record number of student-athletes and celebrated our first team national championship. Most importantly, we continued to see great growth among both our coaches and athletics in their Christian walk of faith. In just its fourth year, our football program won its first-ever conference championship and earned its first berth into the NAIA National Playoffs. We also saw our highly respected head football coach, Phil Jones, receive the prestigious FCA National Coach of the Year Award. Women s basketball player Whitni Tucker was named the national winner of the Emil S. Liston Award, an annual award presented by the NAIA and Daktronics recognizing a male and female junior basketball player based on scholarship, character and playing ability. Softball standout Becca Thomas garnered the SSAC s most prestigious honor, the SSAC Female Honor Student-Athlete of the Year. Along with men s soccer player Kyle Timberlake, Becca was also honored as one of Shorter s two Student-Athletes of the Year. Justyna Mudy won our second individual national championship in the last two years and became the first Lady Hawk to ever win a national championship. Our student-athletes and coaches continued to shine recording all-time highs in the following areas: 75 graduating seniors, 74 all-academic and all-conference selections, 16 NAIA Scholar-Athletes, six conference championships and one national championship and eight Coach of the Year selections. What a year! While we are proud of what has accomplished in the school year, both our coaches and student-athletes are even more excited about what the future may bring. The growth and accomplishments of the past decade have put this program in position to move into the most successful era ever of Shorter Athletics. For that to happen, it will require a great effort on all of our parts as well as a tremendous amount of teamwork. It will also take great faith, unbelievable enthusiasm and a champion s perseverance. Nonetheless, I am confident it can be done. We appreciate your continued support and we look forward to another exciting year in Go Hawks! Bill Peterson Shorter College Director of Athletics Southern States Athletic Conference

9 LADY HAWK HOOPS

10 Shorter Lady Hawk Basketball Lady Hawks take new form following loss of All-Americans Team approach dominates Lady Hawks philosophy NEW HOPES, NEW DREAMS and new goals are commonalities for any team as it prepares for a new season. For the Shorter College women s basketball team, a new challenge awaits, one that previous teams have never faced before: replacing not one, but two standouts, Katrina Martinovic and Nicole Frechette, who became the respective outside and inside cornerstones for a program that has hit the 20-win mark in each of the past two seasons. That, according to head coach Vic Mitchell, is the challenge that will serve as the new foundation for this year s squad. They were two of the better players who have been at Shorter, Mitchell said of Martinovic and Frechette, who capped their careers at Shorter by being named the Southern States Athletic Conference Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the year, respectively. When you lose two players who had that big of an impact, that s a huge loss. This year we have been talking about it being their time and being a true team. They believe we can overcome those losses by being more cohesive, more balanced. It s been exciting. All during the preseason they have relied on each other. They have come together. In order to fill the void created by Martinovic and Frechette, not to mention the eye-catching numbers the pair provided for the Lady Hawks, coming together and playing as a team is the key. On the way to earning the SSAC s top honor last season, Martinovic led Shorter with a 17.2 points per game average and finished over the 1,000-point barrier in just two seasons on the Hill. Also gone is the intensity and drive she brought to the court each and every game. Those were also the traits of Frechette, who anchored Shorter in the paint where she averaged 12.2 points and nearly 10 rebounds an outing and became the Lady Hawks all-time leading rebounder, passing former All-American Tramaine Paul. I can relate back when we lost Tramaine, Mitchell said, recalling what it was like the season after Shorter s all-time leading scorer departed. That next season it seemed like we were always looking for her. We ve challenged this year s team. We ve got to have people step forward and make it harder for teams to defend us. Added Mitchell: One of the things we do have is a number of new players who we think can contribute, but we won t know how they ll do until we actually see them in a game. We lost two great players, but we know what we re getting with our returning players. A total team effort is required if the Lady Hawks hope to better last year s overall record and their 13-7 mark in the SSAC. HER TIME: Senior wing Tamara Weatherby (above) will be relied upon to step up her role after the graduation of Shorter s top-two scorers from last season, All-Americans Nicole Frechette and Katarina Martinovic. The good news for Shorter is that a proven veteran returns to lead the team at the all-important point guard slot in senior Whitni Tucker of Pisgah, Ala. In addition to averaging 3.6 points and three assists last season, Tucker also earned SSAC All-Academic honors and was named as the recipient of the prestigious Emil S. Liston Award given by the NAIA to the top junior female basketball player in the nation based on scholarship, character and playing ability. That s where it all starts offensively and defensively, Mitchell said about the point guard role. What Whitni brings to us is tremendous leadership. Two newcomers will be counted on to give the Lady Hawks additional support at the position Kelly Ellison, a sophomore from Hardaway High in Columbus who transferred to Shorter after playing a season at Stetson University and freshman Aiste Pranciliauskaite from Vilnius, Southern States Athletic Conference

11 Shorter Lady Hawk Basketball 11 Lithuania, who prepped at The Rock School in Gainesville where she was the Defensive Player of the Year and a 4.0 student in the classroom. We ve got to develop at least three point guards, said Mitchell. Each one of them brings something different to the table. The wing position presents the Lady Hawks with diversity as well. Back for her senior season and returning as the top scorer from last year s squad is Tamara Weatherby of Decatur, Ala., who averaged 8.2 points and two assists a game. Shorter can also count on three sophomores who saw action at the wing spot last season are ready to step up their game. Allison Danner from Roswell averaged 3.7 points in and was named to the SSAC s All-Freshman team; Abbie Daniel of Dacula chipped in more than three points a night last year and like Danner gives Shorter a long-range threat; and Troyanna Vickers from Douglas returns after suffering a season-ending injury in the Lady Hawks first game last year. Rounding out the wing depth is freshman Ashley Harris from Royston, an All-State selection and valedictorian for Franklin County High who was the North MVP at the North-South All-Star game and is school s all-time leading scorer and three-point shooter. There s going to be some good competition at that spot, said Mitchell. We ve got good depth there and I think that will help us extend our defense. Although Frechette is no longer the last line of defense under the glass for the first time in four years, the Lady Hawks have a deep list of post players who can team up to play big inside, including a pair of already proven threats. Leading the charge inside will be 6-foot-3 junior Megan Queen of Blue Ridge, who earned a starting role last year and averaged 7.3 points and 6.3 rebounds while recording 33 blocks before an ankle injury sidelined her for the final weeks of the schedule. Tabatha Jenkins, a 5-11 senior from Titusville, Fla., became a starter as last year s campaign came to a close and averaged 5.4 points and 5.7 rebounds. Adding experience at post will be 5-11 sophomore Brittney Smith of Decatur, Ala., who saw action as a freshman and chipped in 2.4 points. Joining the fray in the middle are three newcomers Holly Bawden, a 6-2 senior from Australia who transferred from Mercer; 6-3 freshman Shelby Farrer, an All-Area standout from Model High in Rome; and Chelsi Matthews, a 5-10 freshman who prepped at Glencoe (Ala.) High where she averaged 14 points and 8 rebounds, helped team reach the state semifinals, and was named Region MVP and to the North- South All-Star Game. We think it will be a very balanced team, Mitchell said. We think we will be a team that plays with a lot of effort and enthusiasm. That, the coach said, should help the Lady Hawks on both ends of the court. The last two years we ve pretty much been a half-court team, Mitchell said. With this team we think we can extend our defense and get some easy baskets. People may see us play more of a full-court defense. Offensively, Mitchell and the team know that with the loss of last year s top scorers, the role is wide open. It s a concern as to who will step up, he pointed out. We ve been proactive. We don t want to take half a dozen games to see who will step up. My thought is that we ll have different players come through in different games because we are so balanced. RELOADING DOWN LOW: Junior Megan Queen (above) highlights a group of post players that hope to fill the void left by Nicole Frechette. Senior Tabatha Jenkins and transfer Holly Bawden are also frontrunners. There s a little but of nervousness and apprehensiveness, which is good because it makes you aware of what you need to do. We ve got to play extremely hard and play with enthusiasm, energy and effort. Those are things that come into play every night. If we can do that we ll be productive.

Our philosophy has four components: physical conditioning, spiritual well-being, strong character, and mental toughness. Each one of these plays an intricate role in allowing our athletes to achieve success as a team member and individual student. The importance of any philosophy is that it must hold true in all areas of support. At Shorter College, all of these components are met and surpassed, which allow for a successful collegiate experience. 38 Shorter Lady Hawk Basketball Frechette, Martinovic lead Shorter to another 20-win season SHORTER COLLEGE WOMEN S basketball lore is filled with the legends of outstanding players that carried their respective teams to new heights on the hardwood. The season of Lady Hawk hoops lived up to that storied tradition. Head coach Vic Mitchell guided his team to a second consecutive 20-win campaign last season with the help of two players that etched their own names among the all-time greats to ever don the royal blue and white. Seniors Nicole Frechette and Katarina Martinovic provided the perfect inside-outside punch as the Lady Hawks posted a overall record and 13-7 mark in Southern States Athletic Conference play, earning a No. 4 seed in the conference tournament and advancing to the SSAC semifinals before bowing out to eventual champion and fifth-ranked Lee University. Frechette, a two-time All-Conference selection, had arguably her best season as a Lady Hawk, averaging 12.5 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks-per-game en route to setting the single-season mark for caroms with 314 on the year. Frechette notched 13 double-doubles and her.558 field goal percentage was the fourth-best single-season average in program history. She finished her Shorter career as the school s all-time leading rebounder (911), passing Hall of Famer Tramaine Paul in the category, and ultimately was named the SSAC Defensive Player of the Year and an Honorable Mention NAIA All-American. Her career field goal percentage of.583 sits tied atop the Lady Hawk career list with Michelle Gordon. DYNAMIC DUO: NAIA All-Americans Katarina Martinovic (above) and Nicole Frechette (below) were also named the SSAC Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, respectively. made-per-game (2.7) and 15th in three-point percentage (.403). She did not score in double figures just six times in her 32 appearances, and dropped a season-high 30 points, in addition to pulling down 10 rebounds, in an double-overtime victory over Brenau in February. For her play, Martinovic was honored as the SSAC Player of the Year and earned second team All-America accolades following up her Honorable Mention All-America recognition from Martinovic was named Shorter College Female Athlete of the Year for , turning the final page in a brilliant two-year career. The play of Frechette and Martinovic highlighted another banner year for the Shorter women s basketball program. The Lady Hawks sputtered to a 1-3 start to the season before reeling off 11 wins in their next 14 contests, including a thrilling win over No. 5 Lee in Cleveland, Tenn. that put Shorter in first place in the SSAC. After a three-game skid, Shorter embarked on a five-game winning streak, avenging an earlier loss to Brenau with the aforementioned double-overtime triumph and applying the defensive clamps in conference road wins at Brewton-Parker (55-39) and Emmanuel (53-43). Shorter entered SSAC Tournament play as the No. 4 seed and drew Emmanuel in the quarterfinal round. Although Martinovic struggled to only seven points on 3 of 17 shooting, it was SSAC All-Freshman Team selection Allison Danner who came to the rescue, supplying the Lady Hawks with 10 points and five rebounds off the bench to help Shorter to a win. While Frechette dominated the paint, counterpart Martinovic supplied a long-range assault. The Serbia native flustered opposing defenses with her deadly range and scoring prowess, leading the team and ranking 20th in the country with her 17.3 points-per-game average. Martinovic, whose 158 three-pointers in just two seasons ranks third on Shorter s all-time list, was eighth in the NAIA in three-pointers Frechette led the way with 19 points and 13 rebounds and was eventually rewarded with an All-Tournament selection. The team s accomplishments weren t limited to the hardwood. Junior point guard Whitni Tucker, named an NAIA Scholar-Athlete at the conclusion of the season, was also honored as the NAIA National Emil S. Liston Award winner, a prestigious award given to the junior who best exemplifies character, scholarship and playing ability. Southern States Athletic Conference

In 2009, the SSAC Men s Basketball Tournament was held at Shorter s Winthrop-King Centre, and the SSAC softball tournament was held for the second consecutive year at the Alto Park Softball Complex, home of the Lady Hawks. Not only does Peterson expect excellence on the field and court, but he does so in the classroom as well. In , 16 student-athletes were named National Scholar-Athletes, and 74 were named to conference All-Academic teams. In , Shorter s men s soccer program boasted the highest team grade-point-average in the nation. Prior to taking the helm of Hawks athletic program, Peterson served three years at his position of recruiting coordinator for the Shorter College football team. He came to Shorter from Mount Paran Christian School in Kennesaw, Ga., where he served as head baseball coach. In 2005, he led Mount Paran to a school record 24 wins and a berth in the state finals while being named the Atlanta-Journal Constitution s Coach of the Year. Prior to coaching, Peterson was President and Co-Founder of Horizon Medical Products (HMP), a publicly traded corporation headquartered in Atlanta. Peterson played collegiate football at Texas Lutheran College where he was a member of the 1974 NAIA national championship team, coached by the legendary Jim Wacker. He finished college at Florida State University in 1978 with a degree in Accounting. His father, Bill Sr., is credited with bringing the professional passing game to college football. He coached at Florida State from , at Rice University in 1971 and the Houston Oilers of the National Football League (NFL) from Peterson and his wife, Joanna, have four children: Will, Molly, Ben and Sam. Will was a senior tight end for the 2008 Mid-South Conference champion Shorter football team.

59 Shorter Lady Hawk Basketball 59 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics The purpose of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) is to promote the education and development of students through intercollegiate athletic participation. Member institutions, although varied and diverse, share a common commitment to high standards and to the principle that participation in athletics serves as an integral part of the total educational process. The NAIA embraces the concept of the student and recognizes the importance of the individuality of each member institution, the value of the conference and regional structure, and the benefits of membership in a national association. The NAIA supports gender equity. Gender equity is an atmosphere and reality where fair distribution of overall athletic opportunity and resources, proportionate to enrollment, are available to women and men, and where no studentathlete, coach or athletics administrator is discriminated against in any way in the athletics program. That is to say, an athletics program is gender-equitable when the men s sports program would be pleased to accept as its own the overall participation opportunities and resources currently allocated to the women s sports program and vice versa. Advancing sport with innovative change The NAIA has 50,000 student-athletes participating at nearly 300 member colleges and universities throughout the United States and Canada. Divided into 14 regions, the NAIA offers 23 championships in 13 sports. Since 1937, the NAIA has continued a long tradition of pushing the envelope and making a positive difference in the lives of students, coaches and parents. The Champions of Character program is the latest cutting-edge addition to the NAIA s proud history of innovation. Through Champions of Character, the NAIA seeks to create an environment in which every student-athlete, coach, official and spectator are committed to the true spirit of competition through the five core values: respect, integrity, reponsibility, servant leadership and sportsmanship. 66 Shorter Lady Hawk Basketball Rome s Historic Shorter College Conceived in the mind of educator Luther Rice Gwaltney, the Cherokee Baptist Female College opened for students in As pastor of Rome Baptist Church, now First Baptist, Gwaltney encouraged the active participation of church members in the establishment of a school for young ladies. Because of the generous contributions of Alfred and Martha Shorter, in 1877 the college was renamed Shorter College. Originally, the college was housed in Victorian structures located on Shelton Hill, near Clock Tower Hill in downtown Rome. By 1910 a new vision of a Greater Shorter, and contributions from the J. L. Bass family and the J. P. Cooper family made the relocation of the school to its current site a reality. A significant innovation in the history of the college came in the early 1950s when school administrators and trustees made the decision to recruit the first male students. The Girl s Creed had to be abandoned, a dormitory for men constructed, new sports teams created, fraternities initiated, and very different rules of conduct established. Under the leadership of President Randall Minor, the Georgia Baptist Convention was given control over the election of trustees; new faculty were hired, many of whom are still familiar faces on campus; a new administration building and student center, a new library, and a fine arts building were constructed; and the first African-American student graduated from the college. In the 1990s, Shorter continued to lead. International programs, the establishment of the School of Professional Programs in the Atlanta area, the creation of the Hugh Davis Center for Ministry Education and the offering of an MBA degree program in business represent only a few developments. Under President Larry McSwain, Shorter celebrated its 125th anniversary, dedicated the Winthrop-King Centre; converted the old gymnasium into the Fitton Student Union; and constructed the Bass apartments, the J. Robert Eubanks Welcome Center and the Robert H. Ledbetter baseball field. In 2003, U.S. News and World Report named Shorter one of the Best 25 Southern Comprehensive Colleges and one of the Top 10 Best Buys among Southern Comprehensive Colleges. Dr. Harold E. Newman was named Shorter s president in January 2006 after having served as provost for 20 years and as interim president for one year. Under his leadership, the college continues to receive significant recognition. During the academic year, Shorter was ranked for the sixth consecutive year among the South s best comprehensive colleges focusing on bachelor s degrees. Shorter also was ranked for the third consecutive year as a Best Southeastern College and a Best Value College by the Princeton Review; Shorter was one of 300 colleges nationwide selected for the Colleges of Distinction guidebook. Also, in the fall of 2006, Dr. Carmen Acevedo Butcher, scholar in residence and a graduate of Shorter College, was named the 2006 Georgia Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. Campaigns for new facilities and programs are planned, which include a new library wing, science facility, and performing arts center. Shorter continues to pursue its mission to inspire students to make commitments to lifelong learning, personal spiritual values, responsible citizenship, community and societal leadership and global awareness. The Mission of Shorter College is to provide quality higher education, enabling and encouraging student commitment to active lifelong learning, personal spiritual values, responsible citizenship, and community and societal leadership in a global context.
