The Coyotes, who went 23-8 last season and 12-6 in conference play, have an influx of talent to work with as she enters her first season. Williams, who has been an assistant coach at Texas-San Antonio, Oklahoma State and Tulsa, came to USD after building a Rogers State basketball team from scratch into an NAIA power in five seasons. She holds a career record as a head coach. Williams takes over a program that ranked 12th in the country last season in scoring defense. She expects to have the players that will make the Coyotes an interesting matchup for many teams this season. We would like to expand our depth this year and have more players contributing to our scoring, said Coach Williams. In the guard position, the Coyotes have some key returners, including last season s conference assist leader Alexis Yackley and returning starter Tempestt Wilson. Yackley dished out 4.8 assists per game and held the top spot in the conference in turnover ratio at 2.3-to-1. Wilson will be the highest returning scorer for South Dakota. She averaged 8.6 points per game last season, which was third-highest on the team. The returning guards in our program have played a lot of minutes in Coyote uniforms and we will lean heavily on their experience. Williams said. Nicole Seekamp, a 5-foot-10-inch sophomore who sat out last season, looks to get playing time as well. Nicole started at point guard for the Australia U19 National team in She averaged 18.5 points per game in a pair of international tournaments and captured a world championship that year. Nicole is one of the most intelligent players I have ever been around. Williams said. She is capable of scoring in a lot of ways and brings us a versatile player that is capable of contributing from a lot of positions. Pam January has made big strides at forward after averaging only a handful of minutes in 28 games last season. I ve been thrilled this preseason with how hard Pam has been working, Williams said. She s consistent, a good leader, and is currently playing her best basketball, which is what you want during your senior year. Another returner expected to make a contribution is sophomore Lisa Loeffler, a former Minnesota Class 4-A All-State honorable mention. A pair of newcomers will see court time in the low post. Polly Harrington, a junior college transfer out of Johnson County Community College (Kan.), averaged 11.1 points and 6.7 rebounds per game, and Margaret McCloud, a freshman from Rapid City averaged 16.5 points and 14.5 rebounds per game last season. Five players will be looking to redshirt this year due to injury: Kelly Stewart, McKayla Knudson, Taylor Moore, Taneesha Greaves and Bailey Milne. Scouting Utah State Utah State coach Jerry Finkbeiner coached Oral Roberts a year ago. Finkbeiner led ORU to record and a 14-4 record in the Summit League. ORU went 1-1 against USD last season. The Aggies (2-8) have won both their games at the Great Alaska Shootout. USU topped Prairie View A&M and Alaska-Anchorage during that tournament. Devyn Christensen averages 22.1 points per game, which is tops in the WAC. Christensen is one of the top 3-point shooters in the conference, averaging over three 3-pointers per game. The Aggies average 71 points per game, which is second in the conference. However, the Aggies give up the most points in the WAC (82 ppg) and are 341st in the NCAA in scoring defense. Opponents shoot 46 percent from the field, which ranks USU 342nd in shooting defense.

5 Yote Notes Six players scored double-digit point totals against Peru State on Dec. 15. It was the first time in USD history that many reached at least ten points in a game. Freshman Margaret McCloud recorded her first double-double of her college career by grabbing 19 rebounds and scoring 11 points against Peru State. She is currently third in the Summit League in rebounds per game (8.5) and tops in total rebounds at 94. She has averaged 13.5 rebounds over the last four games. Alexis Yackley recorded her second career double-double with 10 assists and 10 rebounds against Peru State. She's averaged 5.5 assists per game in the last four games. Yackley and McCloud were the second Coyote duo over the last two seasons to record doubledoubles in the same game. Amber Hegge (10 points, 10 rebounds) and Jodie Boss (12 points, 13 rebounds) both had double-doubles against on Jan. 21, A former starter for Australia s U19 team, Nicole Seekamp has shot 57.7 percent and averaged 19.3 points per game over the last four games. Seekamp has recorded double-digit points in each of those games and in a total of eight games this season. Based on 40 minutes averages, USD has some of the most productive players in the Summit League. McCloud leads the Summit League in rebounds per 40 minutes with a 19.7 average and Tia Hemiller is second in steals per 40 minutes at 3.6. Polly Harrington is third in scoring per 40 minutes at 23.7, and Seekamp is sixth in the same stat at Junior Polly Harrington is the only player in the Summit League that is shooting over 50 percent. She shoots 54 percent and averages 12.6 points per game, which is 11th in the Summit League. Tempestt Wilson has averaged 11.2 points per game over the last five games. She has raised her points per game average this season (8.5) by 2.2 points in that span. USD could have an advantage over Utah State in rebounding. Utah State is 329th out of 345 in rebounding margin at -10.0, while USD is 40th at USU is also last in the WAC in rebounds per game at 34.9, while USD is first in the Summit League in that stat at 42.4 per game. South Dakota has only been outrebounded once this season (Pepperdine 47-38). The five players playing their first season in Coyote uniforms (Hoff, Seekamp, Harrington, McCloud, Hemiller) have scored 463 of the team s 698 points (66.3 percent) this season. South Dakota has the top defense in the Summit League, giving up 57 points per game. The Coyotes also have the second-best offense at 63.5 ppg. Injuries have trimmed the Coyote roster down from 15 to 10. Three returners (Kelly Stewart, Taylor Moore and McKalya Knudson) are out for the season and have applied for redshirt status. Guards Taneesha Greaves and Bailey Milne are also redshirting this season. While excelling on the court, South Dakota is also excelling in the classroom. The Coyotes were fourth in NCAA Division I in GPA at according to the Women s Basketball Coaches Association last year. South Dakota ranked behind Green Bay, South Dakota State, and DePaul. Outside of South Dakota State and South Dakota, Summit League schools North Dakota State (16th) and Fort Wayne (18th) also ranked in the top-25. AP POLL (12/17) Rk School Record PR 1.
