The Coyotes, who went 23-8 last season and 12-6 in conference play, have an influx of talent to work with as she enters her first season. Williams, who has been an assistant coach at Texas-San Antonio, Oklahoma State and Tulsa, came to USD after building a Rogers State basketball team from scratch into an NAIA power in five seasons. She holds a career record as a head coach. Williams takes over a program that ranked 12th in the country last season in scoring defense. She expects to have the players that will make the Coyotes an interesting matchup for many teams this season. We would like to expand our depth this year and have more players contributing to our scoring, said Coach Williams. In the guard position, the Coyotes have some key returners, including last season s conference assist leader Alexis Yackley and returning starter Tempestt Wilson. Yackley dished out 4.8 assists per game and held the top spot in the conference in turnover ratio at 2.3-to-1. Wilson will be the highest returning scorer for South Dakota. She averaged 8.6 points per game last season, which was third-highest on the team. The returning guards in our program have played a lot of minutes in Coyote uniforms and we will lean heavily on their experience. Williams said. Nicole Seekamp, a 5-foot-10-inch sophomore who sat out last season, looks to get playing time as well. Nicole started at point guard for the Australia U19 National team in She averaged 18.5 points per game in a pair of international tournaments and captured a world championship that year. Nicole is one of the most intelligent players I have ever been around. Williams said. She is capable of scoring in a lot of ways and brings us a versatile player that is capable of contributing from a lot of positions. Pam January has made big strides at forward after averaging only a handful of minutes in 28 games last season. I ve been thrilled this preseason with how hard Pam has been working, Williams said. She s consistent, a good leader, and is currently playing her best basketball, which is what you want during your senior year. Another returner expected to make a contribution is sophomore Lisa Loeffler, a former Minnesota Class 4-A All-State honorable mention. A pair of newcomers will see court time in the low post. Polly Harrington, a junior college transfer out of Johnson County Community College (Kan.), averaged 11.1 points and 6.7 rebounds per game, and Margaret McCloud, a freshman from Rapid City averaged 16.5 points and 14.5 rebounds per game last season. Five players will be looking to redshirt this year due to injury: Kelly Stewart, McKayla Knudson, Taylor Moore, Taneesha Greaves and Bailey Milne.
