2011 HOUSTON RAPTORS BASKETBALL AAU Player Handbook
AGE GROUP 18 UNDER TEAM Team will consist of a maximum of 15 boys. Provided no boys quit the team or have a long -term injury, no additional boys will be added to the original team that exists on March 31, FEES The cost for the regular season (excluding shoes and any out of town or national tournament expenses) will be $ per player. Travel, hotel, and meals will be parents' expense. A deposit of $ per player is required by March 25, The second payment, the balance of $300.00, is due April 31, Failure to make any payment forfeits player s spot on the team. The $ fee includes conditioning sessions, strength training in the weight room, uniforms, and local tournament fees. NO REFUNDS WILL BE GIVEN FOR ANY REASON! PLAYER GUIDELINES I have learned that success lies not in the destination, but in how you choose to take your journey. Success is living with integrity - in relentless pursuit of whatever it is that you are truly passionate about 1. The team is more important than you 2. If you have issues come see me, don't send your parents 3. Text Message or call coach if you're going to be late or miss any practice or game MAIN GOALS The strongest oak in the forest is not the one protected from the storm and hidden from the sun. It's the one that stands in the open where it is compelled to struggle for its existence against the winds and rains and the scorching sun. Effort only fully releases its reward after a person refuses to quit. 1. We will use sports to become a great person 2. We will always compete at the highest level 3. We will work to qualify for nationals 4. I expect you to be good, and demand that you be great 5. Motivation is a fire from within.
COURT REQUIREMENTS If someone else tries to light that fire under you, chances are it will burn very briefly. 1. Bring all equipment to every game 2. Eye contact is required 3. Pre warm-up focus is excepted 4. Always know when and where we play next 5. Self motivated to start warm ups 1/2 game before each game OFF COURT REQUIREMENTS You are not here to "bad mouth" the weakest; you are here to make up their weakness 1. Remember that you represent the Houston Raptors 2. Expect to spend time with the team for dinners, and other events 3. Maintain nutritional guidelines PRACTICE ATTITUDE There is little difference in people, but that little difference makes a big difference. That little difference is attitude. The big difference is whether it is positive or negative. Practice does NOT make you perfect- practice makes you permanent. No matter what you do if you practice long enough it will become part of you. Practice a bad habit and you will become a bad habit. Allowing and accepting a 2nd class effort in practice will allow you to play a 2nd class game. The choices you make in tough situations will be the habits you develop. By choosing a habit, you agree to the end result of that habit. Our practice attitude is the key to our success as a team this year. Remember, what you do speaks so loud, I can't hear what you say. Albert Einstein once said, "Example is not the best way to teach, it is the only way." Leaders are leaders because of what they do, not what they say they are going to do. When you practice-work to accomplish something- work to get better. Many people confuse activity with accomplishment; putting in the time or attending work-outs insures individuality and for us to play as a team.
If you choose to work hard and commit to the right way of doing things then you will: 1. Always be on time and ready to warm up/stretch 15 minutes before the scheduled time. Be prepared with the appropriate practice/game equipment. 2. Listen with your eyes and ears. Look at your coach in the eye while they talk. Ask questions if you don't fully understand but don't ask questions to just be asking questions. 3. Accept criticism as constructive. No criticism is personal or meant for embarrassment. 4. Never argue with your teammates or coach at any time. Always strive to be the motivator. 5. Always break down and hustle there and back from water breaks or drill changes. 6. Leave all "problems" out of the gym; the court is and always will be the sanctuary for basketball players 7. Be intense and enthusiastic about every day of practice. 8. Learn the proper techniques so that you can execute fundamentals. 9. Commit to the team for special work-outs, social engagements, and other special events. 10. Make sure to maintain all of our equipment including stuff issued to you and the team (uniform). TOURNAMENTS COMMUNICATION AND SCHEDULES Athletes are expected to attend all tournaments. If there is a conflict the athlete must give the coach advanced notice of her absence. We do not get much information before the tournament starts. In fact, if you check the tournament's website, you'll get it as quick as we do. Be prepared for change. Pre-tournament schedules are often changed at the last minute. Be flexible. Tournaments rarely run on time and sites frequently change. Having your cell phone with you will help. If time permits, coaches will give players an agenda for the tournament. This may be verbal or written. Coaches are in charge of the players' schedules during the tournament. This may include team activities outside of basketball. When possible, we will plan to be on the court, fully dressed 45 minutes ahead of scheduled starting time.
ATHLETE GROUP TRAVEL BEHAVIOR AND SAFETY Players are responsible for their own transportation to all tournaments. This also includes transportation from the hotel to the gym. Arrange ahead of time for transportation from hotel to playing sites. Athletes may not leave the hotel area at any time for any reason without parental escort. Parents are responsible for their athletes at all tournaments. No one other than Houston Raptors and parents are allowed in the players' rooms. Athletes must lodge with their parent or host parent during the tournament. Players will be under the supervision of their parent/guardian at all times. Room numbers are to be given only to the members of Houston Raptors travel party. Curfew at l1:00pm unless otherwise stated by coach. An athlete who damages any property at lodging or playing facility will be personally responsible for damages and will be subject to further consequences. Restaurant behavior should be appropriate. Be sure to pay your share including tip and tax. Athletes should behave and dress appropriately as a representative of the Houston Raptors. An athlete found in possession of alcohol, tobacco, illegal drugs or weapons will be sent home immediately at parents expense. This also includes offering legal nutritional supplements to teammates. An athlete that disobeys any travel rules above may be sent home immediately at the expense of the parent. Violation of travel rules may also result in removal from the club after a meeting with the coach, director, player and parents has been held to discuss the seriousness of the violation. TEAM BUILDING Parent/Player/Coach Triad We will have a successful "team" experience only if all three parts of the triad work at it. Parents do have an important role in the successful team building process. Parents. Make an effort to meet other parents, especially newer club parents. Build unity; talk positively to your child and other players and parents. Help your athlete accept individual responsibility and focus on your child. Offer to help "orphaned" players at tournaments. Take into consideration that not everyone has the same financial capabilities when deciding on which restaurants to eat at as a team
EXPECTATIONS Coach's Expectations of Players Practice - On time - Efficient - Loud and supportive - Hustling between locations Competition - Place team interest ahead of individual interest - Be as much mentally involved in the game when on the bench as you are when you are on the court - Be competitive - Learn from losses - Be a Student of the Game - Nutrition and Rest Off the Court Behavior - Smoking, drinking, drugs, and sex are issues for you and your parents except when you are representing the Houston Raptors at competition or while traveling together. "Boy Talk" about these things is not wanted. No one is offended if you do not talk about your "escapades" and some are offended if you do. - Do not offer and nutritional supplements to your teammates without approval from their parents. Coach's Expectations of Parents Have your athlete on time to practice and games. Help me to teach them the difference between accepting responsibilities for outcomes versus being victimized by circumstances. We don't need more victims. Allow the athletes to fail and accept responsibilities for failure. Help them to recover from personal failure. Do not try to prevent them from experiencing it by projecting someone else as the cause of their failure. We have to experience failure to grow. Accept occasional hurt feelings as opportunities for growth and maturity. Help them get through these incidents but do not attempt to preclude them from occurring. Never critique another athlete to parents or players. Never speak to the coach about your child in comparative terms to other athletes.
What Parents Can Expect From Coaches Training Time versus Playing Time - Equal playing time is not a commitment from the Houston Raptors. Each player will receive quality playing time which is earned. - Equal training time is fundamental of the Houston Raptors. - Parents may address any issues they may have with coaches, committee or President. We ask that parents please be professional and set up a time out side of practice time to discuss any issues. Fun Versus Discomfort - Coaches roles are not to entertain your athletes. Practices and competition environments will be designed to challenge your child to grow, not designed to entertain them. Practices should be enjoyable as they receive satisfaction from achieving personal and team goals not previously attained. Occasionally they will even have fun, but that is not a prerequisite to success. In order to push them to grow, coaches will have to push them out of their comfort zone. Coaches have to challenge them to do things they are not currently capable of,which means they will experience failure in practice to prepare them to handle failure in competition. This is mixed in with some success. This balance is one of the ingredients of producing a successful team. Your athlete s ability to handle failure will determine in large part the level of enjoyment that is achieved during the season. COACH + PARENT + PLAYER = SUCCESSFUL TEAM Financial If a player is not current with his financial obligation to Houston Raptors, he will not be allowed to continue participating until all outstanding fees are current. Players and parents must realize that fees are established on the team maintaining 15 players. Players and parents are expected to pay all fees by due dates.
