(CST) tv: big ten network+ RADIO: 93.3 ALT FM (minneapolis) The Rams will be making the second trip to Minnesota in school history and the first since the season. The Rams are coming off a campaign in which they went 6-5 overall but have to replace the top five scorers from last year s squad and boast the largest percentage of underclassmen in the Atlantic 0 (83.3-percent) and one of the highest percentages in all of Division I. VCU has no seniors on this year s team and just two juniors on the squad in returning starters Bria Gibson and Sandra Skinner and welcome three other letter winners back to the team in Jailyn Maddox, Nyra Williams and Danielle Hammond. Against Norfolk State, Maddox scored a career-high 8 points while Bria Gibson hauled in a career-high 5 rebounds. Tera Reed scored nine points and grabbed 2 rebounds in her collegiate debut. The Rams, featuring one of the youngest lineups in the country, trailed NSU just 23-7 with 4:50 left in the second quarter but Norfolk State went on a 2-0 run spanning 3:30 to take a 35-8 lead at halftime. VCU was ultimately able to outscore the Spartans 34-3 in the second half but the initial deficit was too steep to overcome. Gibson is the returning leading scorer and rebounder at 4.5 points per game and 4.6 rebounds per game. Skinner averaged 3.0 points per game and 3. rebounds per contest. Maddox averaged 3.5 points per game during the season. The Rams have five talented freshmen and a transfer in Jordan Agustus on this year s roster but Agustus will have to sit out this season due to NCAA transfer rules. Two local Richmond standouts in Taya Robinson (Huguenot) and Sydnei Archie (St. Catherine s) are freshmen on this year s team. The Rams did have some extra time to bond and practice this offseason as the team took a 0-day trip to South Africa where they played two games against a South African national team representative side and one against a local team. VCU players also participated in multiple community service programs while also sightseeing in Cape THE GOLDEN GOPHERS minnesota golden gophers (2-0, 0-0) Big ten HEAD COACH: Marlene StollinGS Minnesota head coach Marlene Stollings will face her former team for the second straight season and the last of a home-and-home arrangement that saw the Gophers win a close contest last year in Richmond. Her assistant coach, Nikita Lowry Dawkins was an assistant at VCU also under Stollings. The Gophers return 0 members of last year s team that faced the Rams in Richmond. Back for Minnesota is Preseason All-Big Ten Selection Carlie Wagner who led the team in scoring last season at 9. ppg and is leading the squad again this season through two games at a clip of 20.0 ppg. Minnesota is facing back-to-back A-0 opponents as the Gophers are coming off an victory on the road over Rhode Island. The Rams of Rhode Island were selected to finish 3th in the A-0 preseason poll, two spots behind VCU.

4 VCU STORYLINES YOUNG GUNS VCU graduated six seniors last season including three players who scored over,000 points during their college careers (Keira Robinson, Isis Thorpe, Mooriah Rowser) as well as the school s all-time leader in 3-point field goals made (Thorpe). Together, the Rams only return 6 percent of their overall scoring from last season. The roster features no seniors, two juniors, four sophomores and six freshmen. Of the four sophomores, Jordan Agustus (R-So.) will have to sit out this season due to NCAA transfer rules. Bria Gibson brings valuable experience back as the junior started 7 games last season averaging 4.5 ppg and 4.6 rpg. Sandra Skinner is also back as she started 8 contests in averaging 3.0 ppg and 3. rpg. Jailyn Maddox appeared in 20 games and averaged 3.5 ppg. Nyra Williams played in 0 games and Danielle Hammond appeared in contests for the Rams. LOCAL FLAVOR VCU has two freshman on the roster from the Richmond area. Taya Robinson is a Huguenot High School graduate while Sydnei Archie went to St. Catherine s High School. Overall, the Rams feature three total players from Virginia with Nyra Williams being from nearby Hampton and a graduate of Bethel High School. Archie s father, Torrance, played at VCU and was the team s second-leading scorer in and Archie s mother also attended VCU and her high school basketball coach, Ed Sherod, played at VCU and is a member of the school s Hall of Fame. Sherod was also the VCU women s basketball head coach from and went (.464) overall. THREE S COMPANY Of VCU and Beth O Boyle s 207 recruiting class, three of the five players that signed during the early signing period were nominated as McDonald s All-American Games Nominees. Madison Hattix-Covington (Killeen, Texas/ Ellison), Tera Reed (New Zealand/Life Center Academy (N.J.) and Taya Robinson (Richmond, Va./Huguenot) were all named to the nominees list. RAMS ON AFRICA TIME The Rams took a 0-day foreign tour this past August to South Africa where they stayed in Cape Town. As part of the trip, the Rams played two exhibition games against the South African National Team and one exhibition against a local side. In addition to playing games, the Rams partook in community service where they volunteered with the Goedgedacht Trust and their Path out of Poverty center. The Rams also experienced Robben Island, the prison where Nelson Mandela was held, and took a trip to the top of scenic Table Mountain that overlooks the southern tip of Africa and the city of Cape Town. The players also took surfing lessons, did a zip line tour through the mountains, went on a safari, among other adventures. EMPIRE STATE OF MIND VCU features three players on its roster this season that hail from New York City, specifically the Bronx and Brooklyn. Niya Johnson, Del Sparks and Jordan Agustus all call the Big Apple home. Agustus and Sparks are from the Bronx, while Johnson is from Brooklyn. KEEP IT 00 The Rams welcome St. John s transfer Jordan Agustus to the roster for 207-8, though she will have to sit out a season under NCAA transfer rules. Agustus was an ESPN Top 00 recruit out of high school in the class of 205. She will have two years of eligibility remaining. Agustus played at St. John s the past two seasons. She played in 22 games last season as a sophomore, averaging.6 points and.3 rebounds per game for a team that was 22-2 overall. Agustus also played in 23 games for the Red Storm as a freshman and averaged.3 points and.5 rebounds in 6.9 minutes per game. She was listed by ESPN as the No. 00 recruit in the class of 205 and the No. 5 wing player according to ESPN Hoopgurlz as well as the No. 5 player in New York. THE FIVE-ONE-ONE VCU has five talented freshmen who will play a massive role in this upcoming season. Madison Hattix-Covington Ranked the No. 37 player in the country at her position by ESPN.com. She has been named to the District 2-6A First Team All-District every year of high school. Hattix-Covington earned Coaches 6A All- Region II First Team honors from the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches. Averaged 6.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 4.0 steals and 4.0 blocks per game in Tera Reed Played the season for Life Center Academy where she averaged 6.9 points, 4.3 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game as team captain. She played for New Zealand National Age Group teams. In 202, she played for the U6 team at Australian State Champs. In 203, she played for the U7 team in the FIBA U7 Oceania World Qualifiers and is co-captain of 206 U8 and competed in the FIBA Oceania U8 Qualifiers in Fiji in Dec Taya Robinson Averaged 30.0 ppg with 4.2 apg and 0 rpg as a junior when she was named to the VHSL 4A All-State Second Team. She was also named to the 4A East All-Region Squad and First Team All-Conference 20 in She s been named a RTD Scholar Athlete of the Month and a RPS Scholar Athlete numerous times. In she was named the Conference 26 Player of the Year, a 3A East All-Region Player of the Year and First Team 3A All-State. Del Sparks Named the Bronx Westchester Player of the Year and her team s MVP for the season. Sparks was also All-City First Team. As a sophomore, she was named All-City Second Team after earning Honorable Mention honors as a freshman. Sydnei Archie Named First Team All-State, All-Metro Second Team and First Team All-Conference in She was named the MVP of the St. Steven s St. Agnes Tournament 206. 7 BETH O BOYLE HEAD COACH fourth SEASON at VCU GETTYSBURG ( 98) AT VCU (48-23 OVERALL) Beth O Boyle became the 3th head coach in VCU Women s Basketball history on April 29, 204. In 205-6, O Boyle led the Rams to a 23-0 overall record with a 0-6 mark in conference play. VCU defeated a ranked Arizona State squad and earned six victories over NCAA Tournament teams. The Rams were rewarded with a WNIT bid, the program s seventh postseason berth since the season. In her first season at the helm of the Rams in 204-5, she led the team to 6 wins, marking the eighth time in the past nine seasons that VCU has posted a winning record. O Boyle assumed the reigns at VCU after she led Stony Brook to a remarkable turnaround in three seasons on Long Island. The Seawolves improved by 0 wins in each of the last two seasons, including the campaign, when O Boyle guided the club to a school Division I record 24 wins (24-9), and a WNIT bid, the program s first postseason appearance since Stony Brook reached the America East Championship Game last season, the school s first appearance in the final since O Boyle was also pivotal in the development of 204 America East Defensive Player of the Year Chikilra Goodman. In 202-3, Stony Brook s 0-win turnaround was the seventh-best in the country. O Boyle was 42-5 overall in three seasons with the Seawolves. During O Boyle s tenure, Stony Brook was known for its stout defense. In each of her three seasons, the Seawolves ranked in the top 50 nationally in scoring defense. In 203-4, SBU allowed just 60.5 points per game, the 45th-best mark in the country. The Seawolves also ranked 20th nationally in rebounding margin (+7.7). Prior to guiding the Stony Brook program, O Boyle spent four seasons as an assistant at Canisius. She helped steer the program to its best season in , when the Golden Griffins won 24 games and advanced to the MAAC Championship Game. Canisius also received a WNIT bid for the first time in program history. Hired as an assistant coach at Canisius in 2007, O Boyle was elevated to associate head coach in November Responsible for all recruiting activities, as well the development of the Golden Griffin guards, O Boyle coached seven All-Conference players at Canisius, including 2009 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Defensive Player of the Year Brittane Russell, 2009 MAAC Sixth Player of the Year Ellie Radke and 20 MAAC Rookie of the Year Jamie Ruttle. O Boyle has also shown a commitment to developing the total student-athlete. Dani Klupenger earned America East All-Academic status in for her work on the court and in the classroom. At Canisius, she monitored the academic progress of a Golden Griffins team that was recognized in the NCAA Top 25 for team grade point average. In total, Canisius has had 8 selections to the MAAC All-Academic team since O Boyle s arrival, including Marie Warner, who was also named a ESPN the Magazine third-team Academic All-American in O Boyle came to Canisius after serving as the head coach at Montclair State University in Montclair, N.J., for three seasons. O Boyle led the Red Hawks to the ECAC Division III Metro Women s Basketball Championship in and was named the New Jersey Athletic Conference Co-Coach of the Year following the season. She compiled a 5-33 record in her three seasons there, and the Red Hawks also produced their first All-American in 5 seasons under O Boyle s guidance. Prior to taking over at Montclair State, O Boyle spent four seasons as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Rochester. During her first two seasons, Rochester won back-to-back ECAC Upstate New York championships and in her last two seasons, the team made consecutive appearances in the NCAA Division III Final Four. In 2004, the team was ranked No. in the nation for a three-week period according to the USA Today/ESPN/WBCADivision III poll and the D3hoops.com poll. A 998 graduate of Gettysburg College, O Boyle earned four letters with the basketball and soccer programs at Gettysburg and served as a two-time captain in each sport. O Boyle earned her master s degree from the Rochester s Warner School of Education in 200. O Boyle is a native of Rockville, Md., and attended the Academy of the Holy Cross High School in Kensington, Md.
