2 THE COACHES DEREK STINGLEY was named the 2nd head coach in Pittsburgh Power history on May 21, Stingley first joined the Power at the beginning of the 2012 season as the team s defensive coordinator and 10-games into the season he was promoted to interim head coach, taking over a 2-8 squad. Stingley s football coaching career began in 2005 as the defensive coordinator for the Macon Knights of the AF2. The Knights promoted Stingley to head coach that May, and he turned the season around for the slow-starting team, eventually leading his team to the playoffs. During his two-year tenure with Macon, Stingley had 18 players named to the All-AF2 Team. His success was noticed throughout the AF2 ranks, and it didn t take long for the AF2 s South Georgia Wildcats to recruit him to their staff. In three years with South Georgia, Stingley posted a record and was named AF2 Coach of the Year in In 2009, he made the move to the AFL, serving as the defensive coordinator for New Orleans VooDoo, before eventually being named Head Coach. STEVE THONN enters his fifth season with the Gladiators, where he has compiled a record. Thonn was named head coach and director of football operations of the Cleveland Gladiators on December 23, Last season, after losing veteran QB John Dutton in the offseason, the Gladiators struggled to find consistency and finished 4-11 under Thonn saw the Gladiators finish 8-10 and second in their division, falling just short of a second straight trip to the playoffs with Thonn at the helm. In 2011, Thonn s Gladiators finished with an overall record of 10-8 (7-2 at Quicken Loans Arena) and claimed the American Conference East Division crown. In his first year with the organization, the Gladiators compiled a 7-9 record. Despite the sub-.500 finish, the Gladiators outscored their opponents on the year and had receiver Ben Nelson and offensive lineman Adam Tadisch named to the AFL First Team and defensive lineman Anthony Hoke was named to the AFL Second Team. 4 TEAM NOTES Off-Season Success: This past offseason the Power were hard at work building a new and better team. They added key new players and new members to their coaching staff. After a few seasons in which the quarterback position had resembled a revolving door due to inconsistent play and injuries, the Power made it a point to find a franchise quarterback that had a track record of success in the Arena Football League. On September 6, 2013, the Power were assigned veteran quarterback Tommy Grady in the AFL dispersal draft held after the folding of the Utah Blaze and Chicago Rush. Regarded as one of the top quarterbacks in the AFL, Grady has spent the past three seasons at the helm of the Utah Blaze offense. In 2012, Grady was named the League MVP after leading the Blaze to the National Conference Championship game while recording one of the most impressive seasons by a quarterback in the AFL. Grady set six League records including the single season record for the most TD passes (142) and passing yards (5,870). In addition to his MVP award, Grady was also named the Offensive Player of the Year and earned First Team All-Arena accolades. The Power then continued to make improvements to their offense with the addition of wide receiver Aaron Lesuè, Grady s favorite target while in Utah. A First Team All-Arena selection in 2012, Lesuè set an AFL record with 64 TD receptions in the regular season and playoffs combined. In early February, the Power acquired another record setting receiver, Prechae Rodriguez, from the Orlando Predators. Rodriguez set the Predators franchise mark for touchdown receptions this past season with 41 TDs. A former Top 100 recruit coming out of high school, Rodriguez played at Auburn. The Power have also made top moves to their secondary by signing defensive back Virgil Gray. Gray spent the past two seasons with the two-time ArenaBowl Champions Arizona where. In 2013, Gray led the league with 15 interceptions in and earned First Team All-Arena honors. Bolstering New Coaching Staff: The Power bolstered their coaching staff this season with the addition of 40 plus years of Arena Football League experience by hiring Kyle Moore-Brown, Leroy Thompson, and Damian Harrell. Moore-Brown will be taking on the role as Offensive Line Coordinator. In 2013, he served as offensive and defensive line coach for the Iowa Barnstormers. Prior to coaching in the AFL, he spent three seasons in the Indoor Football League (IFL) with the La Crosse Spartans ( ) and the Cedar Rapids Titans (2012). Thompson will be heading up the D-Line as the team s Defensive Line Coordinaror. Previously, Thompson was an assistant coach with the AFL American Conference Champion Philadelphia Soul coaching the squad s fullbacks and linebackers. Prior to his AFL coaching experience, Thompson was an assistant coach at both Wesley College and Lincoln (PA) University. Also, as a member of the NFL Coaching Fellowship Internship Program, Thompson gained experience coaching at three NFL training camps, serving as the assistant defensive line coach with the Philadelphia Eagles (2011) and the Indianapolis Colts ( ). Harrell will take on the role as the team s Wide Receivers Coach. He was a standout wide receiver in the AFL, accumulating 1,164 receptions for 15,128 yards and 357 receiving touchdowns in the 12 seasons he played. He began his AFL career in 1999 with the New England Seawolves ( ) and also played for the Toronto Phantoms ( ), Colorado Crush ( ), Chicago Rush (2008), and Milwaukee Iron/Mustangs ( ). The Arena Football League s all-time leading receiver will be eligible for the League Hall of Fame in Swarming Defense: On the defensive side of the ball, the Power have finished the past two seasons ranked as the top defense in the Arena Football League. In season-opening games, the Power are 1-2 with the only win coming against the Orlando Predators to open the 2012 season. The game against the Gladiators will mark the third time the Power will open their season with a game at CONSOL Energy Center. The first game Pittsburgh ever played was the team s 2011 season opener against the Philadelphia Soul at home. The game ended in an overtime loss to the Soul. In home openers, the Power are winless with a loss to Utah in 2013 and two loses against Philadelphia.
