The Statesmen won the inaugural meeting in 1995, defeating Canisius 22-4 in Geneva. Hobart has enjoyed an average margin of victory of 16.5 goals per game in the series. WHEN LAST WE MET: On April 26, 2005, Hobart used a six-goal second quarter to pull away from a pesky Canisius crew. Nine different Statesmen scored in the contest, led by the three-goal, three-assist performance of DARYL VELTMAN. The Golden Griffins did not score an even strength goal until the fourth quarter, getting their first four markers on man-up opportunities. Hobart dominated every aspect of the contest, taking more shots (62-28), collecting more ground balls (58-43), winning more faceoffs (14-8), and riding Canisius mercilessly the Griffs were successful on just 17-of-32 clear attempts. HOMECOMING: Today s game will serve as a homecoming for sophomore midfielder SEAN MURPHY. The native of Buffalo graduated from Bishop Timon-St. Jude High School. Murphy is tied for second on the team in scoring with 16 points (10-6) and is fifth in ground balls (25). First-year defensemen CHRIS HURLEY (Amherst/Amherst, N.Y.) and JUSTIN HAGER (Salamanca/Salamanca, N.Y.) are also from the Buffalo area. TWO TO GO: One of the most storied lacrosse program s in the nation, Hobart needs just two more wins to become the third collegiate team to reach 700. Now in its 104th varsity season, the Statesmen have compiled a record of (.632). Only Johns Hopkins and Syracuse have more all-time wins. TOUGH ROW TO HOE: Hobart s 14-game schedule features six teams ranked in the STX/USILA Coaches top 20: No. 5 Georgetown, No. 6 Cornell, No. 8 Massachusetts, No. 9 Syracuse, No. 13 Penn State, and No. 16 Loyola. The Statesmen also faced Rutgers (receiving votes). BALL HOG NAROG: Senior long-stick midfielder ANDREW NAROG has helped Hobart to a advantage in ground balls this season. He boasts a team-high 55. Narog is third in the ECAC and 14th in the nation in ground balls per game (5.5). He scooped up a career-high nine ground balls at Rutgers. LIGHTNING STRIKE THRICE?: Red-shirt first-year DAVID O QUINN leads Hobart in the scoring column with 17 points (8-9). Should he remain atop the leaderboard, he would be just the third first-year since 1971 to lead the Statesmen, joining four-time All-American RICK GILBERT 74 and 2005 ECAC Rookie of the Year DARYL VELTMAN. X-CITING: Sophomore faceoff specialist DAN SPINELLA enters tonight s game ranked 20th in the nation in faceoff winning percentage. He is on the year for a success rate of.547. Spinella won the only faceoff he took against Canisius last season. TOO X-CITING: Junior faceoff specialist JOHN SODEN is the reason Spinella didn t get more chances against the Golden Griffins in He was 13-8 at the X against Canisius, finishing the year ranked eighth in the nation (.605). I WANT TO BE LIKE MIKE: Senior attackman MIKE CONKLIN began the season 19th in the nation in career points among active players. Over the past three-

YOUTH MOVEMENT: Of the 12 Hobart players with two or more points this season, eight are underclassmen. In addition to red-shirt first-year DAVID O QUINN, sophomores DARYL VELTMAN (11-5), SEAN MURPHY (10-6), and NICK CURRIE (12-4) and first-years JEFF RYAN (6-5), JEFF COLBURN (3-3), BRANDON BUCHMAYR (4-0), and MATT SMALLEY (1-1) give the Statesmen a potent scoring punch. BACK IN THE SADDLE: Attackman DARYL VELTMAN was held scoreless by Penn State on April 8, the only time in his career (23 games) he has not recorded at least one point. The native of Georgetown, Ontario, started a new streak with a goal at UMass on Saturday. Veltman has 66 career points, tied for 12th among Division I Statesmen (with MATT CROWTHER 96). On April 1, 2006, Fairfield became the first team to prevent Veltman from scoring a goal. He finished the day with one assist. DOUBLE DUTY: Four Statesmen play more than one sport at Hobart. Sophomore midfielder DAN SPINELLA and first-year defenseman JUSTIN HAGER helped the football team to the NCAA Tournament as a fullback (5.3 yds/att) and linebacker (26 tkls, INT), respectively. First-year goalie PETER HANSEN played in 18 matches for the squash team (6-12) and first-year midfielder BEN WAHLER helped skate the hockey team into the NCAA semifinals (3-3-6). KRAUS-SIMMONS TROPHY: Hobart s 9-8 win at Syracuse returned the Kraus- Simmons Trophy to Geneva for the first time since The trophy honors National Lacrosse Hall of Fame coaches Babe Kraus of Hobart and Syracuse s Roy Simmons Sr. Inaugurated in 1986, the Statesmen won the first showdown 16-13, but the Orange won the next 19. DEFLATING THE DOME: Hobart s victory over Syracuse marked the first time the Statesmen have defeated the Orange in the Carrier Dome and the first time Hobart has knocked off Syracuse at home since IT S TRICKY: Six Statesmen have scored three or more goals in a game this season, including sophomore CHRIS DAVID s season-high four at Georgetown.
