6 2007 GAME RECAPS Marist vs. Hobart (Mar 13, 2007 at Geneva, N.Y.) Daryl Veltman recorded the 100th point of his career while leading the Statesmen to a 10-5 victory over Marist on Mc- Cooey Field. Veltman netted a pair of goals and set up two more to raise his career total to 103 points. The junior needed just three and a half minutes and one shot to reach the 100-point plateau in his 32nd career game. He is the fastest of the sixth Division I Statesmen to reach that milestone, beating Nathan Roost 98 by one game. Hobart outscored the Red Foxes 4-1 in the first quarter and cruised to victory. The Statesmen won all of the major stat categories, outshooting their guests 45-31, collecting more ground balls (43-24), winning more faceoffs (13-6), and clearing at a much higher rate (91.6%-64.2). The Hobart defense was sharp all afternoon, but excelled in man-down situations, killing off all six of Marist s extra-man opportunities. Chris David netted a hat trick for the Statesmen, while Jamie Kirk handed out three assists. Jeff Colburn also contributed three points on two goals and an assist. Matt Smalley collected a game-high seven ground balls for Hobart, while Matt Ranaghan and Dan Spinella each picked up six. Spinella dominated the X, winning 12 of the 16 restarts he took. The Statesmen might have won by a much wider margin if not for Marist goalie Ryan Penner. The sophomore turned back 16 shots and helped his own cause with the second of the Red Foxes two first-half goals. With Hobart employing a 10-man ride, Penner saw Hobart starter Brandon Baer (9 saves) stray too far from his cage. Penner launched a shot from his own restraining box that bounced just inside the crease and hopped up just under the cross bar. Baer played 43 minutes before yielding to Brad Hester and Max Silberlicht, who combined for four saves in relief.
