SERIES SNAPSHOT The Statesmen and the Red Storm will meet for the fourth time in a series that began in Hobart holds a 2-1 lead after capturing the first two showdowns 13-9 and 12-7, but St. John s cracked the win column last spring in Queens, with a triumph. WHEN LAST WE MET On April 21, 2007, Hobart lost at St. John s The Statesmen led 9-8 at the half, but the Red Storm scored twice to start the third quarter, taking a 10-9 lead. Nick Currie netted Hobart s only second half goal to forge a 10-all tie (the 10th tie of the contest), but St. John s opened the fourth quarter with three goals in under three minutes to secure the victory. CHRIS DAVID 07 paced the Hobart attack with three goals and an assist, while Currie scored twice. The Red Storm was led by Tom Michaelsen s three goals and two assists. 700 Club April 22, 2006, was a momentous occasion in the tradition-rich history of Hobart lacrosse. On legendary Boswell Field, the Statesmen posted a 12-7 win over the St. John s Red Storm becoming just the third lacrosse program to record 700 all-time wins. Hobart dominated shots (34-22), ground balls (48-28), and faceoffs (19-3). Dan Spinella was 19-of-20 at the X, while Matt Smalley collected a game-high nine ground balls. On attack, Daryl Veltman and Nick Currie led the way with three goals and an assist apiece. The Statesmen broke open a 9-7 game with three fourth quarter goals in a span of just 86 seconds. Currie netted the first followed by back-to-back tallies by Jeff Colburn. Hobart enters today s game with an all-time record of (.627). SO CLOSE Last Saturday, Hobart led UMass 7-5 with 2 minutes remaining, but the host Minutemen scored twice in the final 80 seconds to force overtime and notched the game-winner 1:19 into the extra session to snatch an 8-7 victory. NICK CURRIE led the Statesmen with three goals, while DOUG SHIVER added a pair of tallies and DAN SPINELLA won 11-of-17 faceoffs. On March 15, 2003, Hobart was a perfect 23-of-23 on its clears in a 16-7 victory at Lafayette. NATIONAL NUMBERS Hobart began the week ranked among the nation s best in several categories. The Statesmen were sixth in man-down defense (.804), 11th in scoring margin (+2.5), 13th in scoring offense (10.3), 16th in faceoff winning percentage (.540), and 17th in scoring defense (7.8). Although he does not meet the NCAA s participation requirement (min. 75% of team s games played), Veltman would rank among the nation s top-10 in goals and top-15 in points. BALL HOG Senior faceoff specialist DAN SPINELLA is one of the top X men in the nation. He began the week 17th in faceoff winning percentage (.565) and 18th in ground balls per game (4.89). As a sophomore, Spinella ranked fourth in the nation in faceoff winning percentage (.618). PASSING PROFICIENCY Attackman JAMIE KIRK is 17th in the nation in assists per game (1.70). He is third on Hobart s Division I career assists list, sporting a 24-game total of 55. SHOOTING GALLERY Hobart leads the ECAC Lacrosse League in shots (40.6), shots on goal (24.4), saves (12.40) and save percentage (.614). The Statesmen are second in goals (10.3), assists (5.6), points (15.9), ground balls, (35.0) and penalty killing percentage (.804). TO THE MAX After recording 23 saves in back-to-back wins over Fairfield and Penn State, sophomore goalie MAX SILBERLICHT stopped an additional 11 shots in last weekend s 8-7 overtime loss at Massachusetts. Through nine games this spring, Silberlicht boasts the nation s 18th best save percentage (.577) and 23rd best goals against average (8.24). SMALL NAME, BIG RESULTS Junior d-middie MATT SMALLEY is second on the team in ground balls this season with 41. For his career, he is now sixth on Hobart s Division I ground ball list with 176. Smalley needs just three ground balls to match No. 5 RICH SCHWANKE 98 and six to match No. 4 JOE LESKA 01. BROKEN RECORD With his hat trick against Syracuse, Daryl Veltman raised his career total to 93, becoming the highest scoring Division I Statesman. Jamie Breslin 01 established the previous benchmark at 92. BROKEN RECORD II With four points at Fairfield, Daryl Veltman raised his career total to 146, three more than Hobart s previous Division I standard set by Nate Hill 05 (64g 79a). Veltman currently boasts 101 career goals and 50 career assists. CENTENARIAN With five goals against Penn State, Daryl Veltman became just the 16th Statesman to score 100 in his career. Hobart Hall of Famer Larry Adkinson 62 was the first Hobart player to reach the century mark, while Eric Curry 96 was the most recent, scoring five goals against Colgate on April 3, 1996, and raising his total to 104. CANADIAN CONNECTION Canadian imports Jamie Kirk (Orangeville, Ontario) and Daryl Veltman (Coquitlam, B.C.) have teamed up to score 34 goals for the Statesmen (27 Veltman from Kirk and 7 Kirk from Veltman). The former high school teammates struck 25 times in 2007 and have hooked up for nine tallies so far in LUCKY SEVEN Junior defenseman Ricky Evans has been Hobart s ground ball leader in the team s two conference wins this season. He scooped up a game-high seven GBs at Fairfield and shared game-high honors with five against Penn State. WATCH HIM Senior attackman DARYL VELTMAN was named to the Tewaaraton Award watch list for the second consecutive season. He is just the second Statesman to earn the distinction and the first to make the list twice. Defenseman Greg McCarthy 05 was the first Hobart player to earn a spot on the list. TOP TWENTY Hobart has outscored its opposition this season with 20 different Statesmen scoring at least one goal. Daryl Veltman leads the way with 18 tallies, while Nick Currie and Jeff Colburn have scored 13 and 12 goals, respectively. DOUBLE DUTY Faceoff specialist DAN SPINELLA and defenseman JUSTIN HAGER were both starters for Hobart s football team this past fall. The duo helped Hobart earn a share of the Liberty League Championship and a spot in the NCAA Playoffs. Primarily a blocking back, Spinella averaged 3.1 yards per carry and 7.0 yards per catch as a fullback, while Hager started for the first time at linebacker, leading the Liberty League with 114 tackles. PRESEASON ACCOLADES Two Hobart seniors, attackman DARYL VELTMAN and faceoff specialist DAN SPINELLA, earned spots on the preseason ECAC Lacrosse League team according to Face-Off Yearbook. PRESEASON ACCOLADES II Senior attackman DARYL VELTMAN was named a preseason honorable mention All-American in the 2008 edition of Face-Off Yearbook. The two-time All-ECAC selection has been the Statesmen s top goal scorer in each of his three seasons on campus. COACH K Head Coach Matt Kerwick is in his seventh season as the head coach at his alma mater. The 2002 Patriot League Coach of the Year has a career record of for a.534 winning percentage in 13 seasons as a head coach, including three-year stints at Alfred University and Randolph-Macon College. Among active Division I coaches, Kerwick began the season ranked in the top 25 in both career wins and career winning percentage. Kerwick was an assistant coach for the U.S. National Team that brought home the silver medal at the 2006 International Lacrosse Federation World Championship and served as a co-coach of Team USA during the US Lacrosse Champions Challenge in Orlando, Fla. this past January. CHAMPIONSHIP TRADITION Hobart has made 25 appearances in the NCAA Tournament (4 Division I, 6 Division II, 15 Division III) and has won 16 national championships (1 USILA, 2 NCAA DII, 13 NCAA DIII). Hobart is one of only two schools to compete in the NCAA Tournament in all three divisions (Cortland State is the other). SCOUTING THE RED STORM St. John s brings a 1-9 overall record and a 1-4 ECAC mark into today s matchup. The Red Storm earned an 11-7 victory over Penn State last weekend, their first win of the year. St. John s is averaging just 6.4 goals a game while allowing 9.6. The Red Storm is led offensively by senior midfielder Justin O Donnell who has 14 goals and six assists. In addition to O Donnell, only twins Trevor ( ) and Tom (7-5-12) Michaelson have managed to record more than 10 points. Senior Jack Rosson has taken the majority of the team s faceoffs this season, winning 49.7 percent (71-143). He has also picked up a team-high 43 ground balls. Sophomore goalies Gavin Buckley and Dan Goldberg have split time between the pipes, combining for a.515 save percentage. Goldberg has started more games (6), but Buckley was in net for last weekend s victory over Penn State (11 saves). TIME CHANGE The start time for the Loyola at Hobart game on April 26, has been pushed back one hour. The opening faceoff on Boswell Field will now take place at 2 p.m.
