The Rtball Family mourns the loss of Uncle John Mihalik The Rock seeks to close the 2005 season with a two-game winning streak and a.500 record as it makes the short trek north and east to Clarion for the season finale. The Rock can also assure itself of a share of third place in this year s Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division competition with a win over the hosting Golden Eagles. A win at Clarion will also allow The Rock to avert a third straight losing season and a third straight four-win campaign. The Rock has not had three straight losing seasons since when SRU had 3-6, 4-5 and 2-7 marks in succession. PSAC-West standings Barring a major upset by Lock Haven over Edinboro, the Fighting Scots will share the regular-season title with the winner of Saturday s California at Indiana game. California, Edinboro and Indiana enter this week s action tied for the top spot in the PSAC-West with 4-1 division records, followed by The Rock at 3-2, Shippensburg at 2-3, Clarion at 1-4 and Lock Haven at 0-5. The preseason poll of the division head coaches listed Edinboro as the team to beat, followed by California, Indiana, Shippensburg, The Rock, Clarion and Lock Haven. Collegiate finale This week s game will mark the final appearance by six Rock seniors: offensive linemen Myles Arnold and Don Harbison, tight end Steve Fullerton, running back/return specialist Josh Kniess and defensive linemen Robert Minnie and Josh Zeisloft. The coaches The Rock is led by 18th-year head coach Dr. George Mihalik, who ranks second on SRU s all-time wins chart with a career record. Coach Mihalik has been a part of The Rock program for 34 of the last 35 seasons. He is 13-4 against Clarion and 9-2 in head-to-head meetings with Clarion head coach Malen Luke. Luke, who was briefly a member of The Rock coaching staff before being named head coach at Clarion, is in 12 seasons at Clarion and in 18 seasons as a collegiate head coach. The Rock-Clarion series: The Rock has won seven of the last eight and nine of the last 11 meetings with the Golden Eagles and holds a advantage in the all-time series This year s game will mark the third successive season that The Rock and Clarion meet in the season finale. The Golden Eagles won a decision in 2003, while The Rock prevailed by a score last year. Both of those games were played on Bob DiSpirito Field at N. Kerr Thompson Stadium in Slippery Rock. Last year s meeting The Rock s Josh Kniess rushed for 111 yards and three TDs to lead the winning effort. Rock H-back Brandon Richardson caught four passes for 106 yards less than a week after his mother died and QB Nate Crookshank passed for 141 yards. For Clarion, Glenn Lovelace rushed for 75 yards and one TD and Brandon Dando passed for 84 yards and ran for a 38-yard TD. Common opponents The Rock and Clarion have played five common
2 age 2 rivals (all PSAC-West foes) this fall. SRU is 3-2 in those games, while Clarion is 1-4. Comparative scores Scores of the games against common foes are as follows: Opponent SRU Clarion California Edinboro Indiana Lock Haven Shippensburg Average score Quality competition for The Rock The five teams that have beaten SRU this fall have compiled an.830 winning percentage and a combined 39-8 record (Bloomsburg 10-0, Youngstown State 7-2, Shepherd 10-0, Indiana 5-4, Edinboro 7-2). Shepherd and Bloomsburg were ranked 1-2 in last week s NCAA Division II Northeast Region poll and were both among the top 25 teams in the nation according to both the American Football Coaches Association and D2Football.com. Youngstown State was ranked 11th in last week s Sports Network Division I-AA national poll. Toughest schedule in the PSAC The Rock s 2005 schedule ranks as the most difficult in the 14-team PSAC based on winning percentage of the opponents. Here s how the various teams schedule rank: PSAC school * W-L Pct. + I-AA Slippery Rock Shippensburg Indiana Kutztown East Stroudsburg Lock Haven Millersville West Chester Mansfield Clarion Cheyney Edinboro Bloomsburg California * = opponents; combined win-lost record + = opponents with a winning record I-AA = NCAA Division I-AA opponents Rock scoring outburst Last week s 58-point explosion against Shippensburg marked the second time this fall that The Rock scored 50 or more points in a game. The last time SRU broke the half century mark twice in a single season was 1999, when it scored 52 points at Indiana and 68 at Kutztown. The Rock has never scored 50 or more points in three games in the same season. SRU s point total against Millersville was its highest since The Rock scored a win at West Virginia Wesleyan on Sept. 9, The school record for most points in a game is a 92-0 pasting of St. Francis in The modern era mark is a 76-0 cakewalk against Lock Haven in Clarion scoring drought On the opposite end of the spectrum, Clarion has been shut out three times in its last five outings and has scored one or less touchdown in five of its last six games. The Golden Eagles high-water scoring effort was a 29-point output in a four-overtime win over Kutztown in Week 2 (Sept. 3). How the teams match up Here is a statistical matchup of The Rock vs. clarion: Category Rock O Clarion D Scoring 25.7 (5) 32.0 (11) Rushing yards (3) (10) Passing yards (5) (13) Total yards (5) (12) Passing efficiency (8) (11) Third down efficiency 36.8% (7) 32.6% (4) Red zone efficiency 71.9% (8) 82.4% (13) Quarterback sacks 21 (9) 19 (8) Kickoff returns 19.1 (8) 18.8 (5) Clarion O Rock D Scoring 10.1 (13) 26.8 (9) Rushing yards (11) (9) Passing yards (12) (1) Total yardage (12) (5) Passing efficiency 73.8 (13) (6) Third down efficiency 32.6% (8) 29.8 (3) Red zone efficiency 34.5% (14) 83.3% (14) Quarterback sacks 17 (6) 24 (3) Kickoff returns 20.3 (4) 19.3 (8) Kniess is Rock s all-around best Rock senior RB/RS Josh Kniess amassed 310 all-purpose yards to become SRU s career leader in that category... He rushed for 172 yards and two TDs to extend to six games his string of consecutive 100-plus-yard rushing efforts... Kniess has scored two or more rushing TDs in five of the last six games... The only game he failed to achieve that accomplishment was the Oct. 22 game at Edinboro, when he rushed for 120 yards -- the most allowed by the nationally ranked Fighting Scots defense... His two rushing TDs vs. Shippensburg improved his 2005 total to 12, one shy of his career-best mark set a year ago... Kniess recorded the sixth punt-return TD of his career when he took one a career-best 80 yards to the house vs. Shippensburg on Saturday... He needs 79 yards vs. Clarion to move into third place on the career rushing yardage chart and 18 carries to set the career rushing attempts record... Kniess needs only three rushing yards
3 age 3 vs. Clarion to reach the 1,000-yard mark for the second successive season. Only six other players in Rock history have reached the milestone in back-to-back seasons... He would become the eighth player in Rock history to rush for 1,000 or more yards twice during his collegiate career... Kniess rushed for a career-high 210 yards and three TDs in The Rock s Oct. 15 win over Millersville... Kniess standing in career categories, as well as updated Rock statistics for this season, can be found elsewhere in these game notes. Player of the Week honors Kniess earned his third PSAC-West Offensive Athlete of the Week award on Sunday. He was also selected on Oct. 2 and Oct. 15. Kniess and Rock defensive ends Cory Lacek and Josh Zeisloft were named to honorable mention national Player of the Week honors on Oct. 18 by D2Football.com. Lacek and Zeisloft each recorded a school-record-tying three quarterback sacks vs. Millersville. On Oct. 2, Kniess and The Rock defensive unit as group were afforded PSAC Athlete of the Week honors for their performance in a win over California.Kniess compiled 267 all-purpose yards with 107 yards and two TDs rushing and 160 yards on four punt returns. The Rock defense held California s high-octane offense in check throughout the game, most notably holding Antoine Bagwell (the No. 3 rusher in the country prior to the game) to 95 yards rushing. Aerial assault Rock redshirt sophomore QB Nate Crookshank had his second-best passing effort as a collegian on Oct. 8 when he passed for 254 yards at Indiana. He threw for 311 yards in this year s season opener at Bloomsburg, the highest total recorded by a Rock QB since Nov. 12, 1994, when James Poldiak also passed for 311 yards. Poldiak s effort vs. Shippensburg is the best total since John Linhart passed for a school-record 502 yards on Nov. 7, 1992, vs. Clarion. Crookshank s efforts at Bloomsburg and Indiana bettered his rookie season-best effort of 225 yards on Oct. 2, 2004, at California, Pa. Crookshank has passed for 1,424 yards and seven TDs this fall after throwing for 1,535 yards and 11 TDs a year ago in his first collegiate campign. You can also find his standing in single-season and career categories elsewhere in these notes. On the receiving end Crookshank s favorite receiver this season, redshirted sophomore H-Back Colin Golden caught six passes for a career-high 105 yards Oct. 22 at Edinboro. Golden caught a career-high nine passes for 75 yards Oct. 8 at Indiana, the most catches by a Rock receiver since Ryan McKavish caught nine for 153 yards vs. Bloomsburg on Sept. 28, Golden has 41 receptions for 453 yards and one TD this fall after having only six catches for 31 yards a year ago as the backup to second-team All-PSAC-West selection Brandon Richardson. Golden needs five receptions this week to move into a tie with Richardson and Jeremy Rock for 10th place on SRU s single-season pass receptions list. Richardson caught 46 passes for 662 yards and two TDs a year ago. Noteworthy debut Sophomore wideout Paul Favers is The Rock s second leading receiver this fall with 24 catches for 392 yards and two TDs. In his first game since being converted from a defensive back, Favers had seven receptions for a teamseason-high 127 yards at Bloomsburg. That is the highest yardage total for a Rock receiver since McKavish s 153 yards vs. Bloomsburg on Sept. 28, One week earlier, McKavish caught eight passes for 183 yards vs. Fairmont State the best single-game total in The highest yardage total for a Rock receiver in 2004 was Brandon Richardson s six-catch, 122-yard effort at California, Pa. on Oct. 2. The high-water mark in 2003 was a 107-yard effort by Tim Arthurs in the finale (Nov. 15) vs. Clarion. Daniel s dialed in on PATs Rock kicking specialist Ryan Daniel had a string of 31 consecutive successful extra-point kick attempts snapped by a miss following The Rock s fourth TD vs. Shippensburg... The string extended back to Oct. 23, 2004, when Daniel missed and had one blocked on successive tries vs. Edinboro... Daniel is 28 of 29 on PATs this fall after going 32 for 35 a year ago... He had a string of 20 straight successful PAT kicks snapped a year ago vs. Edinboro. Trey, trey again Daniel is seven of 14 on field goal attempts this fall and 17 of 29 in his career... He is currently tied for sixth on The Rock s career field goals made list and is four treys away from sole possession of third place... He kicked a career-best 49-yarder on Sept. 24 vs. Lock Haven and came up just short in an attempt from 54 yards Oct. 15 against Millersville that would have established a school record for the longest FG. Clarion kicking woes Clarion kicking specialist Kyle Snoke is 1 of 11 on FG attempts. His only successful attempt was a 31-yarder on Oct. 15 vs. Lock Haven. That came after nine misses to open the season. Snoke has only attempted one FG since his successful attempt; he missed a 31-yarder last Saturday vs. Indiana. Alumni reunions This week s game will mark only the fourth time this fall that The Rock will not face a team that has an SRU alumnus on its coaching staff. Earlier this season, SRU faced alumni Bill Perkins (Bloomsburg defensive line coach and strength and conditioning coordinator), Casey Vogt (Youngstown
4 age 4 State tight ends coach), Shawn Rohrer (Shepherd defensive line coach), LarryWilson (California wide receivers coach), Paul Tortorella (Indiana defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach) and Tom Parry (Edinboro wide receivers coach). Kniess notches preseason honor Kniess was named to the Don Hansen Football Gazette s preseason All-America list as a return specialist earlier this fall. Kniess earned honorable mention All-America postseason honors last fall from the Football Gazette and D2Football.com and was a special mention A-A pick by Dopke.com, all in tribute to his punt returning prowess. He also earned first-team D2Football.com and Football Gazette All-Northeast Region and All-PSAC- West honors as a return specialist, as well as secondteam All-PSAC-West and third-team all-region honors as a running back. Home-field advantage The 2005 season will be the 32nd campaign The Rock has played its home games at Thompson Stadium. Since rolling to a 41-3 win over Waynesburg on Oct. 19, 1974, in the first-ever game at the facility, The Rock has compiled a record in home games. SRU is at home since Coach Mihalik assumed the reins in Turf wars The Oct. 22 game at Edinboro was the second and final time this fall that The Rock will play on natural grass. SRU opened the season on the real stuff in Bloomsburg. The Rock is 8-7 in home games since the AstroPlay carpet was installed on Bob DiSpirito Field at N. Kerr Thompson Stadium prior to the start of the 2003 season. The Rock won 103 of 148 games in 29 seasons on natural grass at Thompson Stadium. Road warriors The Rock is in road games under Coach Mihalik. Picking on someone their own size The Rock s game at Bloomsburg marked the ninth time in 10 seasons that SRU opened its football season with a road game. Last year s lidlifter vs. Bloomsburg is the only exception. The Rock opened the 1996, 1997, 1999, 2000 and 2003 campaigns at Youngstown State; kicked off the 1998 season vs. South Florida at the since-demolished Houlihan s Stadium in Tampa; was Florida Atlantic s firstever rival in the 2001 opener at Pro Player Stadium (now Dolphins Stadium) in Miami; and kicked off the 2002 season at Eastern Kentucky. The Rock vs. NCAA Division II foes The Rock owns a record under Coach Mihalik against teams from its own NCAA classification (Division II). Unkind to neighbors Prior to its 24-7 loss to Shepherd in the home opener on Sept. 10, The Rock had won 15 straight games against West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference teams. SRU had not lost to a WVIAC team since the second week of the 1995 season, when West Virginia Wesleyan handed The Rock a setback in Buckhannon, W. Va. Since Dr. George Mihalik assumed The Rock head coaching reins in 1988, The Rock is 21-3 against WVIAC teams. SRU is all-time and 23-3 since 1960 against West Virginia teams. End of a long-running series The Rock s Sept. 10 game against Shepherd could be last one The Rock plays in regular-season action against a WVIAC team. This is the final season in which PSAC teams can play as many as three non-psac teams. Beginning next fall (2006) and running through at least 2012, the conference will play a mandated 10-game schedule that will include four crossover games against teams from the opposite division of the PSAC. The Rock will face Kutztown, Mansfield, Millersville and West Chester in its crossover games next fall. Student + athlete The Rock s 2005 preseason football roster includes eight players who earned PSAC Scholar-Athlete honors in That group includes defensive backs Aaron Berarducci, Brandon Rakszawski and Travis Sarver, linebacker Mark Drango, defensive lineman Clint Forsha, wide receiver John Benca, quarterback Nate Crookshank and offensive lineman Joe Klipa. An record-high total of 159 Rock student-athletes earned PSAC Scholar-Athlete honors last year. That total was an increase of 49 over the previous year s total and represented approximately 33 percent of SRU s total of 479 student-athletes in 23 intercollegiate varsity sports.. Speaking of academics... The Rock s Dr. George Mihalik is one of only a handful of head football coaches in the nation, regardless of classification, who has received an academic doctorate degree. Mihalik is a professor and teaches junior- and senior-level classes in SRU s Health and Safety Department. Homecoming king Last year s loss to Edinboro was only the third SRU Homecoming game defeat suffered by a Rock team tutored by 18th-year Rock head coach Dr. George Mihalik. Since 1959, The Rock is in SRU Homecoming games. The Rock vs. NCAA Division I-AA foes The Rock s Sept. 1 loss at Youngstown State dropped SRU s record against NCAA Division I-AA foes to The only win against a big brother was the 2001 season-opening triumph over Florida Atlantic in the Owls first-ever game at Pro Player Stadium (now Dolphins Stadium) in Miami. All the games against I-AA foes have been road games for The Rock. Scores of Rock games vs. I-AA foes include: 2005: Youngstown State 44, The Rock : Youngstown State 35, The Rock 13

Seven of those losses, it must be pointed out, came against NCAA Division I-AA foes (Youngstown State, South Florida and Eastern Kentucky). Mihalik is 4-2 in season-opening games played at home on DiSpirito Field at Thompson Stadium. Home openers The Rock has lost its last three home openers, but Rock head coach Dr. George Mihalik is 13-5 in the first home game of a season. Game by game scores for SRU home openers since 1988 are as follows: 1988: The Rock 34, Central Connecticut : The Rock 31, District of Columbia : Springfield 39, The Rock : The Rock 17, Northwood : The Rock 45, West Virginia Wesleyan : Ashland 30, The Rock : The Rock 27, West Virginia Wesleyan : The Rock 31, Wisconsin-River Falls : The Rock 34, Fairmont State : The Rock 41, West Virginia Wesleyan : The Rock 52, Fairmont State : The Rock 38, West Virginia Wesleyan : The Rock 40, Fairmont State : The Rock 45, Tiffin : The Rock 45, Fairmont State : Gannon 20, The Rock : Bloomsburg 20, The Rock : Shepherd 24, The Rock 7 Early riser The Rock s season-opening game at Bloomsburg tied last year s lidlifter vs. the Huskies as the earliest season-opening game in Rock football history.
