The Rock seeks to record its third win of the season when it visits Kutztown to do battle with the Golden Bears in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference crossover contest. The Rock prepared for this week s game by mauling Mansfield, 46-0, last Saturday in the home opener on Bob DiSpirito Field at N. Kerr Thompson Stadium in Slippery Rock. Kutztown, meanwhile, was handed a defeat by Shippensburg. NEXT UP: The Rock will play its fourth road games of the season next Saturday in Clarion; the Green and White will meet former comrade Jay Foster (SRU s defensive coordinator from 1988-) and the Golden Eagles in the opening game of the PSAC-Western Division schedule. THE ROCK-KUTZTOWN SERIES This will be the fifth time The Rock and Golden Bears have met on the football field. SRU has won the first four meetings. The teams have not played each other since Scores of Rock vs. Golden Bears games are as follows: : The Rock 38.. Rock 26, Kutztown 7.. Rock 14, Kutztown : The Rock 6 THE COACHES Rock head coach Dr. George Mihalik owns a career record in 19 seasons. He needs four wins to tie the late N. Kerr Thompson for the most wins by a Rock football coach. Golden Bears head coach Raymond Monica is in his first season as collegiate head coach and has a 1-1 record. MIHALIK VS. KUTZTOWN As The Rock s head coach, Dr. George Mihalik is 2-0 against the Golden Bears. He was 2-0 as an assistant coach under Bob DiSpirito from ROAD WARRIORS SRU is in road games under Coach Mihalik. ROCKIN THE P-S-A-C The Rock enters this week s game ranked second in the PSAC in both scoring offense (31.3 points per game) and passing offense (254.0 yards per game), third in total offense (392.7 ypg) and quarterback sacks (8), fifth in pass defense (159.3 ypg), seventh in rushing offense (138.7 ypg), rushing defense (132.3 ypg) and total defense (291.7 ypg) and eighth in scoring defense (24.3 ppg). In individual categories, Nate Crookshank leads the conference in pass efficiency (189.6) and is ranked second in yards passing (250.3 ypg) and total offense (272.3 ypg); Cory Lacek leads the PSAC in quarterback sacks (5) and tackles for loss (9); Anthony Walls is tied for second in pass interceptions (2) and fifth in kickoff returns (20.6 yards per return); Ryan Daniel is second in kick scoring (4.7 points per game), fourth in extra point percentage (91.7) and tied for fifth in field goals (0.33 per game); Luke Wetzel is fourth in pass receiving yards per game (97.7), tied for fourth in scoring (10.0 ppg) and seventh in pass receptions per game (4.67); Colin Golden is fifth in pass receptions per game (5.0); Paul Favers is fifth in punt returns (7.5 yards per return), seventh in kickoff returns (19.6 ypr), eighth in all purpose yards (109.3) and ninth in pass receiving yards per game (66.3); Kyle Witman is fifth in punting (38.1 yards per punt); Tyler Boudreau is tied for seventh in QB sacks (2); Travis Sarver is eighth in rushing (68.3 ypg) and Seth Randall is 13th in tackles (7.0 per game). RECORDS ARE MADE TO BE BROKEN For the second time in as many weeks, The Rock had a school-record-setting performance in last week s win over Mansfield. Crookshank and Favers set the new standard for longest pass completion when they hooked up for a 95-yard touchdown. One week earlier, Lacek set the school record for quarterback sacks in a game with four at Millersville.

2 A third school record was tied in Millersville when Wetzel caught three TD passes to match the number caught by Greg Hopkins vs. Lock Haven in The Crookshank-to-Favers pass bettered the old school record of 94 yards set by a Tony Nunes-to-Jim McElhaney play at Westminster in Lacek s broke a record of three sacks in a game shared by nine players, including himself vs. Millersville one year ago. TOUCHDOWN PASS MARK ALSO CHALLENGED A fourth SRU record received a stiff challenge in Millersville on Sept. 9. Crookshank s four-td passing effort was one TD shy of the school record of five thrown by Eric Denton vs. Shippensburg in SACK EXCHANGE With 17 sacks in his first 13 collegiate games, Lacek is halfway to equalling the SRU career record of 32 by Matt Kinsinger ( ). HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE The season is the 33rd campaign in which The Rock has played its home games in N. Kerr Thompson Stadium. Since rolling to a 41-3 win over Waynesburg on Oct. 19, 1974, in the first-ever game at the facility, The Rock has compiled a record in home games. SRU is at home since Coach Mihalik assumed the head coaching reins in TURF WARS This week s game will be the fourth straight The Rock will play on artificial turf this fall. The only exceptions to an allartificial season will be road games at Edinboro and West Chester in Weeks 9 and 11, respectively. The Rock is 9-7 in home games since AstroPlay carpet was installed on DiSpirito Field at Thompson Stadium prior to the start of the season. The Rock won 103 of 148 games on the natural grass at Thompson Stadium. AERIAL ASSAULT Crookshank had his finest day as a collegiate passer last Saturday vs. Mansfield, when he completed 17 of 25 passes for 336 yards and two touchdowns. Crookshank earned Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division Offensive Player of the Week NOTE: Game by game recaps of the collegiate careers of Nate Crookshank, Ryan Daniel, Paul Favers, Colin Golden and Luke Wetzel s can be found elsewhere in these game notes. honors on Sept. 10 after he passed for four touchdowns and 221 yards at Millersville. His 336-yard passing yardage total vs. Mansfield was the highest recorded by a Rock QB since John Linhart passed for an SRU-record 502 yards Nov, 7, 1992 vs. California (Pa.). Crookshank s previous careerbest passing effort was a 311-yard performance at Bloomsburg in the season opener. He threw for 254 yards in front of a home-area crowd last year at Indiana U. of Pa. and, as a redshirt freshman in, passed for 225 yards at California (Pa.). WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR MAKES Crookshank has passed for eight TDs in the first three games this fall after throwing for only seven scores in 10 games a year ago. He had 11 TD tosses in. CHART CLIMBER Crookshank ranks fifth on SRU s career pass completions list (288) and sixth in career pass attempts (533) and yards (3,842) charts and is tied for seventh in career TD passes with 26. He needs 12 completions to move into fourth place on that career list, 19 attempts and 172 yards to take over fifth place on those two charts and three TDs to leap into fifth place in that category. WETZ AND WONDERFUL Wetzel had his best game as a collegian at Millersville, where he hauled in three TD tosses from Crookshank en route to a four-catch, 138-yard afternoon. Wetzel followed up that effort with a career-high seven-catch, 120-yard night vs. Mansfield his second-best total as a collegiate player. Prior to this fall, Wetzel s best yardage total was 107 vs. Fairmont State in. The four catches at Millersville had tied his career-best catch total recorded vs. Bloomsburg in both and. With five TD catches this fall, Wetzel has already bettered his season total of two and his total of four. His second TD catch at Millersville, a 52-yarder, was the fourth 50-yard-plus TD reception of his career. He caught a 67-yarder vs. Fairmont State in, had a 65-yarder at Fairmont State in and a 51-yarder vs. Bloomsburg in. BEST SINCE 2002 Wetzel s yardage total at Millersville was the highest recorded by a Rock receiver since Ryan McKavish had 153 yards vs. Bloomsburg on Sept. 28, McKavish had a 183-yard receiving day one week earlier vs. Fairmont State. FAVERS FIESTA Favers had four catches for 127 yards vs. Mansfield, which matched his career-best receiving yardage effort. He caught a career-high passes for 127 yards in last year s season opener at Bloomsburg, his first game as a wide receiver after being a backup defensive back in. DANIEL S DIALED IN ON EXTRA POINTS Daniel had a string of 14 straight successful extra-point attempts snapped when his first try last Saturday vs. Mansfield failed. In his three-year collegiate career, he has been successful on 75 of 80 tries. Daniel nailed 32 of 35 PATs in and 32 of 33 attempts a year ago. He was successful on 31 straight kicks prior to a miss vs. Shippensburg on Oct. 29,. He had a string of 20 consecutive successful kicks snapped just over a year earlier (Oct. 23, ) by a block and miss on back-to-back attempts vs. Edinboro. TREY, TREY AGAIN Daniel,, a two-time second-team All-PSAC-West selection, booted his first field goal of the season last week vs. Mansfield after going 0-for-2 at Millersville. He booted seven field goals a year ago and 10 in. He has the potential to nail a school-record-setting boot; he came up just short on a 54-yarder vs. Millersville on Oct. 15,, that would have bettered the existing best boot of 52 yards. Daniel s longest successful field goal attempt was a 49-yarder vs. Lock Haven in. He also had a 45- yarder in at Youngstown State. Daniel, who has scored 129 points in his career, needs three points to move into a tie for 17th place on SRU s career

3 scoring list. He is tied for fifth in career field goals chart with 18 and needs three FGs to move into sole possession of third place in that category. TEAM CAPTAINS Senior linebacker Jerome Whiting (Pittsburgh/North Hills H.S.) and junior offensive tackle Mike Butterworth (Northern Cambria/Northern Cambria H.S.) have been selected as the Rock team captains in a vote by their teammates.
