6 A SUSPENSEFUL SEASON Entering the weekend, the Lopes have already played in six overtime matches this season, going -. GCU set the Division I record for shutout wins in a season, surpassing last year s mark. Three weeks ago, Pollard won the WAC s Defensive Player of the Week Pollard award for his role in the Lopes shutout win over Oral Roberts to close out non-conference play on Sept.. The Sydney, Australia native came up with three big saves to keep the Golden Eagles off the scoreboard and eventually lead the Lopes to a -0 win in overtime. GCU s shots surpassed the previous high of 0 set at Stetson on Sept. 8, 0. It also marked the first time GCU recorded two games of five or more goals in a single season. FRESHMEN MAKING A MARK The future of GCU soccer looks bright if the play of the Lopes freshmen is any indicator. Four key freshmen have continually made impacts in their first years playing for the Lopes. Smith Afonso Morris-Demos Drack After scoring his first collegiate goal against Houston Baptist on Oct., Marco Afonso recorded two assists last Friday against CSU Bakersfield. Malik Smith, a key contributor on the Lopes back line in 07, scored his first collegiate goal against CSU Bakersfield on Oct. 6. Musa Morris Demos, a redshirt freshmen, was the offensive star of the Oct. WAC opener against Houston Baptist. He scored twice and added an assist on the evening. Morris Demos is up to goals on the season. Josh Drack has been busy for GCU in 07 and he added another point to his ledger on Oct.. He assisted on GCU s second goal of the night, feeding a ball to Niki Jackson. NEWS, NOTES, NUMBERS GOALS COME IN BUNCHES FOR McGLOTHAN In his fourth year with the GCU program, Aidan McGlothan, a defender who spends most of his time distanced from the goal, had never scored. That changed on Thursday, however, as McGlothan scored, perhaps, the biggest goal of the season as GCU topped UC Riverside. It came with under :0 to play in the first OT off of a beautiful free kick from Josh Drack. Less than five minutes in game time later, McGlothan was on the scoring ledger once again. After a Charlie Keating attempt was deflected by the goalkeeper, it fell at the feet of McGlothan who found the back of the net once again. JACKSON YEAR 4 Senior forward Niki Jackson is back for his final season with the Lopes. The Scottsdale, Ariz. native is easily Grand Canyon s most decorated Division I soccer player, coming off of a year where he was named the WAC Offensive Player of the Year and earned NSCAA All- West Region recognition. Jackson scored 6 goals in 8 matches last season, a goals per game average (0.89) that ranked third nationally. The forward was named to the MAC Hermann Award Preseason Watch List for the nation s top collegiate soccer player. Curiously, Jackson will have to prove himself again in 07 as the conference s coaches did not select him as the WAC Preseason Player of the Year, although he did land a spot on the Preseason All-WAC team. 06 TOP GOAL SCORERS (GOALS PER GAME) Rank Player School Goals Games Avg. He Doyle Mosnia spent the last five seasons at Air Force and had previous stints as the top assistant at Creighton, as well as assistant coach stops at Virginia Tech, Penn State, William & Mary, and Mercer. Cizo Mosnia has an extensive coaching background including an -year stint as the head coach at Eastern Illinois, taking over for Hyndman at the time. Under his direction, the Panthers went and claimed four Summit League Championships. Mosnia most recently taught and coaches soccer at Belton High School in Belton, Texas. OFFICIALLY OFFICIAL Word was handed down on Wednesday, Aug. that Grand Canyon University s move to NCAA Division I Athletics had been officially approved by the NCAA. The celebratory notice capped off a four-year transition period across all of the school s varsity sports teams. During that time, GCU athletic teams competed against a fully-division I schedule, however could not qualify for postseason events such as conference tournaments and/or national tournaments. With the official stamp of approval, the Lopes can now qualify for WAC Tournaments and NCAA Tournaments immediately. GCU accepted an invite to join the Western Athletic Conference on Nov. 7, 0 and began the transition during the 0-4 academic year. While ineligible for postseason competition during the transition, Grand Canyon found success during the four years including numerous WAC regular season titles as a department. During the transitional period, Grand Canyon claimed 4 WAC titles in sports ranging from baseball and softball to golf, tennis and track & field. 8 BACK FOR FIFTHS A pair of GCU defenders, Jordan Slack and Amer Sasivarevic, will return for their fifth years at Grand Canyon after both being granted medical redshirt seasons. Slack s 0 season was cut short due to injury (limited to just five games) and Sasivarevic s 06 was ended after just one game. The two bring a tremendous Slack Sasivarevic amount of experience to GCU s backline in 07, combining for 9 games of collegiate experience in their careers with the Lopes. BRING ON THE TRANSFERS GCU s 07 roster features a handful of transfers from other four-year schools, with two returning to their Phoenix-area roots after brief stays elsewhere. 07 TRANSFERS (FROM FOUR-YEAR PROGRAMS) Player From Hometown Evan Waldrep, Defender Creighton Jackson Jellah, Midfielder Portland Jeremy Pollard, Goalkeeper Akron Sydney, Australia Bennett Lehner, Forward Dayton Camas, Wash. #LopesInThePros: TURNING PRO A couple of members of the 06 GCU Men s Soccer team have joined the professional soccer ranks. Freshman defender Hector Montalvo earned All-WAC and All-West Region honors last season for his defensive prowess in 06 and was rewarded with a professional contract. Montalvo departed GCU to join Tigres in Liga MX. Montalvo is a product of the FC Dallas Academy. Graduated senior Jose Rodriguez Nieblas also took his talents to the professional level, joining nearby FC Arizona, a Mesa-based club that competes in the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL). Rodriguez Nieblas actually got the unique opportunity to compete against his alma mater when the two teams squared off in spring soccer, a - draw. DOUBLE-TRIPLE Montalvo Some would say that a hat trick is a once-in-a-lifetime achievement. Niki Jackson proved otherwise in 06 when he recorded two hat tracks in a single season. The first came in GCU s shutout -0 win over IUPUI on Sep. at GCU Stadium. Less than a month later, Jackson posted a road hat trick in a - win over Houston Baptist on Oct. 6. 9 NEWS, NOTES, NUMBERS SEDONA CERTIFIED For the second straight season, the men s soccer team headed about two hours north of campus to Sedona, Ariz. for their preseason training. The 0-day trip serves not only as a destination with cooler temps, but also as an opportunity to get away from everyday distractions and focus on just soccer while building team chemistry in the process. Hyndman: It s a beautiful area. The community has really embraced us. It s an easy ride. We re up in the altitude so we re getting a little bit of fitness training too. LOPES PUT IN THE SUMMER TIME Anticipating another program leap in GCU s first year of Division I postseason eligibility, most Lopes players chose to be on campus since May for five days per week of building strength in the weight room or fitness on the field. That put Coach Schellas Hyndman s team in midseason fitness before this month s 0-day training camp in Sedona, which trickles into making them more apt to be the team that players and coaches envision for a season-opening road trip. It makes me happy to say that I didn t even have to organize it, said GCU senior forward Niki Jackson. It was more of an individual effort. Everyone wanted to be here. Players wanted to work hard to have a good season. One of the biggest differences from last year to this year is we re all on the same page this time. We came in early. We weren t worried about getting fit. We were already fit. We just worried about our tactics and what we ll do to solidify wins on and off the field. The Western Athletic Conference announced the addition of California Baptist University to the conference on January, 07. The Lancers will begin competition in WAC-sanctioned sports in the 08-9 academic year. The university continues a meteoric rise which will see it begin the transition to Division I after just five years at the Division II level, the minimum allowable time period. The Lancers have had noted success in men s soccer including an NCCAA Championship in 0 and 0. The Lopes are -- against the Lancers all-time. As the conference sits today, the addition of California Baptist will bring the WAC up to men s soccer schools (the most of any WAC sport) and nine full members. The school is located in Riverside, Calif., the third WAC men s soccer school in California (San José State, CSU Bakersfield). LOPES TABBED TH PRESEASON In the way preseason polling generally goes, the Lopes were picked to finish fifth in the Western Athletic Conference in 07 after finishing in fifth place in 06. Niki Jackson was the lone GCU player to earn All-WAC Preseason honors, but was not named Preseason Player of the Year despite winning the award last season. The Lopes went toe-to-toe with some professional competition at GCU Stadium throughout March and April. With developmental training sessions every morning, the Lopes were then able to put their game to the test against some of the top competition on the Southwest. GCU s five-game spring schedule consisted of two matches with Phoenix Rising FC (United Soccer League) as well as one game each against FC Arizona (National Premier Soccer League), University of New Mexico and Yavapai College. Coach Hyndman: We are very fortunate that we have some professional teams in the environment that are also looking for their preseason games. We were also able to play New Mexico, an NCAA Tournament-type of team. We were able to do a final game with Yavapai College where we played our second team and got them some playing time. In the three contests versus the professional soccer teams, the Lopes were able to record a draw in all three matches. GCU tied Phoenix Rising - and - before also tying FC Arizona -. 9
