Downing completed the three-point evening by assisting Rosa Maria Rago's goal at the 106:08 mark of the match. It was Downing first career collegiate goal and it was the Chippewas' first win of the season. She bettered the previous mark of 55 set by Nicki Downey ( ) Jessica Godshall, Miami Junior- Forward Villa Hills, Ky Godshall tallied her first collegiate goal in Miami's 2-2 tie with Cincinnati. She collected a loose ball and scored on a blast from 25 yards out. Her goal, which came in the 26th minute, knotted the match at 1-1 Jill Heikkila, Northern Illinois Forward, Senior Chicago, IL Heikkila snapped a scoreless streak of nearly two years with her tallyagainst Wisconsin. With her 20-yard chip late in Friday's match, thechicago native logged her first points since Sept. 28, 2001, when shetallied a goal and an assist versus Bowling Green State. 3 AKRON Akron opens its MAC schedule at home on Friday, but will be on the road for the majority of its early league slate. Three of the Zips next four and four of its next six contests are on the road. In its third season as a varsity sport Akron has yet to win a MAC road contest. * Akron's match up with Marshall on Sunday serves as an historical reminder for the Zips program. UA's 1-1 tie with Marshall last season gave the Zips its first-ever point in the MAC standings. That game was played in Akron BALL STATE Junior Kate Nadalin scored three goals in BSU's matches last week. She now has 21 goals at BSU to rank as the most goals scored in a career by any Cardinal in the program's four-plus years Nadalin's 13 goals scored in 2000 rank first for most goals scored in a single season. Ball State begins MAC play this week, as the Cardinals travel to Miami on Sunday. BOWLING GREEN Several Falcons posted career firsts in Friday's Eastern Illinois match. Sophomore Megan Rapp's assist on the Falcons' second goal of that match marked the first point of her collegiate career. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Allie Failor made the first match appearance of her career in that match. While she did not face a shot on goal during her 10:25 of work, Failor went high to grab an EIU cross and thwart a Panther scoring attempt. Junior Kristy Coppes assisted on the Falcons' first goal in the EIU match. That upped her career point total to 55 points. Coppes now trails school recordholder Jill Conover ( ) by 10 points on the school career points list. The assist was the fifth of Coppes' career, to go along with a BGSU-record 25 career goals. Sophomore Julie Trundle was injured early in the EIU match, and did not play in Sunday's Eastern Michigan contest. Prior to Sunday, Trundle had started each of the first 25 matches of her BGSU tenure. In that EMU match, though, classmate Leah Eggleton saw her first action of the year after missing the first three matches due to injury. BUFFALO Two Bulls netted hat tricks this week as Natalia Crofut scored three goals against Niagara on Wednesday and Emily Russell scored a hat trick against Grambling State on Sunday. Prior to this week, the last Bull to post a hat trick was Elizabeth Pfeffer in For the second week in a row, a Buffalo player was honored by the Mid-American Conference as the Player of the Week. Last week Devon Russell took home the award. This week, Emily Russell was honored. The Bulls open up the MAC portion of their schedule this week with matches against Western Michigan and Northern Illinois, both of which are at home.. CENTRAL MICHIGAN The Chippewas had played six straight overtime games to a draw before the 2-1 overtime win over Cincinnati last weekend. CMU had five games end in a tie last year and the second match of this season was a 1-1 tie with Idaho. The last time an overtime game ended in a decision prior to the Cincinatti match occurred when CMU topped Ohio in the MAC semifinals. CMU slipped by the Bobcats with 2-1 win in four overtimes. CMU is now in overtime matches. After being shut out in the first match of the season, CMU's freshman classhas put some big points on the board. Alison Heydorn's first career goal against Idaho was the match-tying goal while Rosa Maria Rago scored her first career goal in overtime against Cincinnati this past weekend. CMU tied Idaho, 1-1, and beat Cincy, 2-1. Notes from around the MAC Both Stacy Downing and Rosa Maria Rago scored their first collegiate goals this weekend. Downing tallied her first, the match-tying goal against Cincinnati, and Rago's overtime game-winner versus UC was the freshman's first collegiate goal. EASTERN MICHIGAN With the 1-0 win over Bowling Green, EMU has now won five of their seven MAC openers since the start of the soccer program. They are 4-1 in conference openers under Coach Hall. No, it s not a typo, but early in the 2003 campaign, someone other than Jessica Hupe is leading the team in scoring. Freshman Aven Purcell has tallied a goal and an assist for three points. The Eagles continue MAC play this week as they travel on the road again to take on the Toledo Rockets Friday night. KENT STATE The Golden Flashes used a 3-0 victory against Campbell University (Sept. 5) and a 2-1 win versus Elon University (Sept. 6) to claim the championship in the 2003 Kent State Soccer Tournament. It is the second time Kent State has won a tournament in the seven-year history of the program. The Flashes also won the 1999 Kent State Classic, defeating Loyola University-Chicago 2-0 and Northern Arizona University 2-1. Senior forward Lauren Caminati (Solon, Ohio/ Solon) scored one goal last weekend at the Kent State Soccer Tournament, the 22nd of her career, moving her into the all-time points scoring lead at Kent State. Caminati has 56 points in her four-year career, better the previous mark of 55 set by Nicki Downey ( ). Last season Caminati became KSU's all-time leading goal scorer and she is currently third on the career assists list. She also holds or shares a pair of single-match records and two single-season records. This season, Caminati leads Kent State with two goals. The Golden Flashes opened the 2003 home schedule last weekend with the Kent State Soccer Tournament, winning a pair of games on the friendly pitch at the Kent State Soccer Field. Kent State has now won eight of its last 11 games at home. Last season, the Golden Flashes posted a record at the KSU Soccer Field, The Flashes have outscored their opposition in the last 11 games at the KSU Soccer Field. MARSHALL The Thundering Herd open up the conference portion their schedule this week with a road contest at Kent State. Marshall also opens up the home portion of the MAC schedule, with the match Sunday against Akron. Junior goaltender Ashleigh Woods should be well prepared for the conference matches. She has been tested often, as she leads all conference goaltenders with 37 saves to this point. MIAMI With a loss to Virginia Tech on Friday, the RedHawks dropped to 0-2 on the season. The only other time the team has started 0-2 was That year, Miami went 15-5 the rest of the season and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. On Sunday, the Red and White made the first step in righting the ship. The RedHawks tied Cincinnati, 2-2. The Bearcats were ranked ninth in the region by Soccer Buzz. Junior Jessica Godshall scored her first career goal in the 26th minute in the match against Cincinnati on Sunday, which tied the match at 1-1. This week Miami starts its conference portion of the schedule, with matches against Toledo and Kent State. NORTHERN ILLINOIS Northern Illinois continues a challenging run to open the 2003 schedule this week as the Huskies host 2002 Missouri Valley Conference champion Creighton University this Friday (Sept. 12). That match is set for 4 p.m. at Huskie Soccer Field, leaving NIU little time recover before opening the Mid- American Conference slate Sunday (Sept. 14) with a 1 p.m. date at the University at Buffalo. Sophomore goalkeeper Carrie Dvorak tallied a career-high 12 saves against the Badgers in her first start of the year. Dvorak, who posted a 2.27 goalsagainst-average in six appearances last season, made her 2003 debut with a scoreless second half at Air Force on Aug. 29. Sunday's match is the first of three consecutive road dates to open the MAC schedule. Following Friday's non-conference match, Northern Illinois will not play again in DeKalb until a Sept. 26 meeting with Marshall. OHIO The last time the Bobcats started the season 1-3, they went on the win the MAC regular-season title in Ohio sophomore goalie Melissa Parra registered the first two career starts and complete games of her career at the Northwestern Wildcat Classic over the weekend, making five saves in both matches. With two scores against Minnesota on Friday, Tiffany Horvath became the first Bobcat freshman to record a multiple-goal game since fellow forward Christel Schiering scored twice against Kent State on Sept. 24, TOLEDO Lindsey Zembower scored her first collegiate goal at Valparaiso on Sunday. Zembower lofted a free kick from 25 yards out over the Crusader goalkeepers head for the eventual game winner. Another first in the game was the first college start ofredshirt freshman goaltender Jen Whipple. Whipple made five stops en route to earning her first collegiate victory. With Sunday's win at Valparaiso, UT improves to all-time against the Crusaders. The five alltime wins is the second most for a UT team over an opponent. The UT record is six wins against Eastern Michigan. Also, the Rockets have now outscored the Crusaders 16-9 in their six matches. The 16 goals ties for the most UT has scored against one opponent in school history. The Rockets also scored 16 goals against EMU. With a goal on Friday, senior Melissa Lesage moved into sole possession of third place on UT's all-time goal list with 23 career tallies. She has also collected 11 assists in her career to rack up 57 career points, good for third all-time at UT. She is two goals and two points away from tieing former Rocket great Kellie Boone for second place in each category. WESTERN MICHIGAN Despite having possibly his deepest team since arriving at WMU,head coach Mike Haines has seen his squad struggle offensively. Four of the team's five goals to this point came in theseason-opening 4-0 win at Valparaiso. WMU posted a record onthe weekend and weren't able to find the back of the net against Creighton or Drake. Even the slightest of offensive consistency would be more thanenough for the Bronco defense. WMU's back line stacksup with the best in the league, a trademark of a Haines-coached squad.western Michigan has allowed just three goals in fourmatches, which translates into a 0.71 goals against average for netminder Kate Perz, who already owns two shutouts.
