WELCOME Dear St. Jude Hockey Families, Welcome to the 56th season of St. Jude Knights hockey! Since 1960, St. Jude s mission has been to educate our youth by teaching positive life values, such as dedication, hard work, selfdiscipline and good sportsmanship through hockey while providing hockey training and skill development that is second-to-none. We are 100% dedicated to providing all players with opportunities to learn to play ice hockey, to develop and enhance their skills, and to reach their full potential both on and off the ice. Whether your child is a beginner who is ready to try hockey for the first time, a more experienced player who is ready for competitive league play in the Northwest Hockey League (NWHL), or a veteran travel-level player who is looking to take on the highest levels of competition in the Northern Illinois Hockey League (NIHL), St. Jude has a program that will meet your player s needs. To our newest members, welcome to the St. Jude family. We look forward to getting to know you, cheering with you in the stands, laughing with you on road trips, sharing new adventures, and forming friendships that will last a lifetime. To our returning families, welcome back. Thank you for helping make St. Jude a wonderful home for all of our kids. Thank you for supporting our players, coaches, and volunteers. Thank you for creating a one-of-a-kind culture that makes St. Jude far more than a club. Thank you for making St. Jude a family. Let s have another great season! Go St. Jude! 5 WHAT S NEW? St. Jude is extremely excited to announce several new program updates for the season including new uniforms, a new coaching structure, the Capuano Memorial Service Award, the second year of the St. Jude golf outing, the first year of the St. Jude family picnic, and an entire month of activities to help in the fight against cancer! We hope that all of these updates will continue to improve your player s and family s experience as part of the St. Jude family. NEW LOGO We hope that you like St. Jude s new logo and uniform for the season. We spent a lot of time trying to create a logo and uniform scheme that captured our club s history and values while looking great. The logo was purposely designed to reflect St. Jude s core values: Dedication, Honor, Tradition, & Community. Here s a few features that you may have missed: Since its inception in 1960, St. Jude has been fully committed to teaching positive life values like DEDICATION, hard work, self-discipline and good sportsmanship. It is therefore no coincidence that St. Jude chose a Knight as its emblem over 50 years ago. The Honor Knight at the center of St. Jude s logo embodies these values and is a perfect symbol of St. Jude s commitment to them. As part of its mission, St. Jude strives to teach all of its players, parents, and coaches to HONOR the game. Honoring the game is not easy. It demands genuine respect for ROOTS (Rules, Officials, Opponents, Teammates and Self). It demands that we do what is right, even when doing what is right is not easy or popular. It demands standing up for others and helping our friends in need. The police officers and fire fighters who work and live in our community are shining examples of Honor and are role models for our players. To show our respect and appreciation for them, the St. Jude Honor Knight holds a sword that is adorned with a gold and silver pommel in the shape of a police officer s star and a firefighter s cross. 6 The St. Jude hockey club is steeped in TRADITION that dates back over 50 years. The club was founded in 1960 by a group of families who were members of the St. Jude church in South Holland, Illinois. Many of St. Jude s past players are now coaches and parents of current players. We give back by paying forward. Since its founding, St. Jude teams have worn green. In its early years, St. Jude wore green and gold jerseys. More recently, the jerseys have featured green and black. For the season, St. Jude will return to its roots by featuring green as the primary color for its jerseys with black and gold accents. It will also adopt a crest that combines the shape of the original St. Jude shield with the cross-shaped shield that has come to symbolize St. Jude in recent years. The new logo also pays respect to all those who helped build the St. Jude hockey club by prominently displaying the 1960 founding date. St. Jude has been proud to serve the South Side Hockey COMMUNITY since We are proud to be South Siders. We are proud of our home. We are proud of our community. We are family in every sense of the word. St. Jude s commitment to our community is represented by a three-towered castle. The castle was inspired by the Irish castle in Beverly that is a South Side landmark. And the three towers represent the three rinks that we call home, Southwest Ice Arena, Oak Lawn Park District Ice Arena, and the Morgan Park Sports Center. DEDICATION HONOR TRADITION COMMUNITY 6

NEW YOUTH UNIFORMS All players selected to youth teams (i.e. co-ed teams) playing in either NWHL or NIHL will receive a new uniform package that includes new home and away jerseys, new home and away socks, and new helmet stickers. The new jerseys will feature sewn-on crest and shoulder patches, player names, and numbers. DEDICATION HONOR TRADITION COMMUNITY 7

NEW GIRLS UNIFORMS Girls selected to all-girl teams will also receive a new uniform package that includes new home and away jerseys, new home and away socks, and new helmet stickers. The girls uniform package will continue to feature a black, white, and pink theme and the pony-tail knight logo that has become a brand of the St. Jude girls hockey program. The new uniform will also feature sewn-on crest and shoulder patches, player names, and numbers. DEDICATION HONOR TRADITION COMMUNITY 8

EXPANDED COACHING STRUCTURE St. Jude is consistently working to improve the coaching and training provided to our players. For the season, St. Jude will expand its coaching staff structure to ensure that all players on all teams are receiving consistent and exceptional coaching and instruction. The Head of Hockey Operations (Paul Manning), Youth Hockey Director (AJ Hernacki), Girls Hockey Director (Shannon Coleman), and House Director (Brian Jacque) will develop a comprehensive training and development program with practice plans, skill development goals, and team concepts to be taught at each level. The directors will work closely with level coordinators and coaches throughout the season to ensure that players and teams are continuing to progress throughout the season and to ensure that all players on all teams receive superior and consistent training throughout the season. The St. Jude goalie director (Bill Moreth) will oversee our goalie development program. For the season, St. Jude will offer goalie-specific training sessions with Coach Bill and his staff. Coach Bill will work with the directors and coaches to develop a goalie training schedule that will allow all goalies to regularly attend on-ice goalie training sessions. NEW OFF-ICE TRAINING AND EDUCATION PROGRAM Early this year, St. Jude learned that SIA would not be able to offer the off-ice training facility to St. Jude for the season. We have therefore partnered with Jacque Sports Training LLC ( JST ) to develop an improved hockey and age-specific training program for all St. Jude travel teams at the JST facility located at 2760 West 111 th Street (1 mile from the Morgan Park Sports Center). The facility is equipped with hockeyspecific training equipment and plenty of space for off-ice hockey conditioning and skills training. Off-ice training will be offered to all travel-level teams on a weekly basis and is included as part of the travel team s fall fee. House team fees do not include off-ice training. 10 DAN CAPUANO MEMORIAL SERVICE AWARD Dan Capuano was a St. Jude coach, Chicago fire fighter, father, husband and friend who lived a life of honor, love, and service. He embodied each of the virtues and values that St. Jude strives to teach our youth every day. To honor and remember Dan, St. Jude and the Capuano family will award an annual service award to a St. Jude player, coach, or volunteer who demonstrates outstanding and selfless service to our community on and off the ice. The award will include a grant equal to one fall player fee that may be used to offset the cost of playing hockey at St. Jude. The recipient s name will also be engraved on a replica of the sword held by the Honor Knight in the St. Jude logo and displayed at Southwest Ice Arena. Nominations for the Dan Capuano Memorial Service Award can be submitted through the St. Jude Website. The deadline to submit nominations for the season is July 24. The winner will be announced at the St. Jude Golf Outing on August 6. What Matters Most How will the value of your days be measured? What will matter is not what you bought, but what you built; not what you got, but what you gave. What will matter is not your success, but your significance. What will matter is not what you learned, but what you taught. What will matter is every act of integrity, compassion, courage or sacrifice that enriched, empowered or encouraged others. What will matter is not your competence, but your character. What will matter is not how many people you knew, but how many will feel a lasting loss when you re gone. What will matter is not your memories, but the memories that live in those who loved you. Living a life that matters doesn t happen by accident. And your life so dearly mattered to us. PRE-HOCKEY PROGRAMS Learning the proper way to ice skate and developing basic hockey skills are the first steps for your beginning player. St. Jude Hockey Club's Little Squires (Learn to Skate) and Little Knights (Learn to Play) programs embrace the American Development Model (ADM) for teaching children how to play hockey while having FUN. We're proud to continue our tradition of developing young players by offering four convenient sessions during the year (three during the fall/winter season and one in spring). Each session will offer both the Little Squires and Little Knights programs tailored to your player's abilities. Please check the St. Jude website in mid-august for dates and cost information for St. Jude pre-hockey programs. For more information about St. Jude s Pre-Hockey Programs, please contact our Pre-Hockey Coordinator, Nicole Hauser at nicb200@yahoo.com. LITTLE SQUIRES (aka LEARN TO SKATE) This program is designed for young pre-k, kindergartners, and new-to-skating first through third grader boys and girls who are interested in learning to skate. It is focused on creating a welcoming environment to foster a love for the player s time spent on the ice. Our goal is for the players to learn the most basic skating skills while having fun. LITTLE KNIGHTS (aka LEARN TO PLAY) This program is designed for boys and girls ages 5 to 10 with previous sessions in basic ice skating. In this program we will introduce the basic tenets of the American Development Model (ADM) that stresses small area games for increased player development including puck handling and team concepts. 19 PRE-SEASON CAMPS & CLINICS St. Jude s annual Pre-Season Fall Focus Camps are a great way for your player to get back on the ice in August so that he or she is ready for the fall season when travel league try-outs and house league placements are held in early September. St. Jude s hockey staff has created an up-tempo and rigorous instruction plan to advance the skills of each player. Goalie instruction will be provided. TRAVEL-LEVEL MITE FOCUS & ASSESSMENT CAMP Continuing on the success of last year s travel-level mite focus camp, St. Jude will again offer a pre-season focus and assessment camp that is specifically targeted at players seeking to play travel-level mite hockey this season. We have learned that at ages 8 and under, it does more harm than good to put these players in a formal, high-stress tryout setting where players are observed over only one or two sessions. The players perform much better when they are observed by directors and coaches over several station-oriented practice sessions with players of similar experience and skill. Directors and coaches will use the first camp session to place players into groups and may redistribute players throughout the duration of the camp to ensure that players are appropriately challenged and playing with and against players of similar skill and experience levels. The coaches will assess each player s core hockey skills such as skating, stops, turns, crossovers, and stickhandling. At the conclusion of the camp, players will be placed into St. Jude practice squads that will train together during St. Jude practices and off-training sessions from September through March. Players who are not selected to a St. Jude travel-mite practice squad are invited to attend NWHL placements at no additional charge. For information about league, game, and tournament opportunities for travel-level mite players, please visit the Junior Knights Hockey Club website at The cost of the camp is $250 and includes six sessions. Players who register before August 1, 2016, will receive an early-bird discount and will be charged only $225. Please note that all participants in the Travel-Mite Focus & Assessment Camp must have USA Hockey Insurance. CHECK THE ST. JUDE WEBSITE FOR MITE FOCUS & ASSESSMENT CAMP DATES AND TIMES. WE ANTICIPATE THAT THE SCHEDULE WILL BE RELEASED IN MID-JULY WITH SESSIONS BEGINNING IN THE FIRST WEEK OF AUGUST. DEDICATION HONOR TRADITION COMMUNITY 19

WAYS TO REDUCE YOUR ICE BILL St. Jude is always looking for innovative solutions to help people make hockey more affordable. Here are a few ways to reduce your ice bill. DISCOUNTS MULTIPLE PLAYER / FAMILY DISCOUNT The multi-family discount is applied to all lesser ice bills where the highest ice bill is paid in full. This discount is 10% for the second player in the same family on a St. Jude team-based program, and 30% for each additional player in the same family. PAY-IN-FULL DISCOUNT Those who pay their bill in full at time of registration will receive a 3% discount on their ice bill. This does not include goalies, Little Knights/ADM or Learn to Skate programs. CREDITS WEBSITE ADVERTISEMENT SALES CREDITS 50% of all website ads sold will be deducted from your ice bill. The final deadline for submitting ads is January 1, Ad credits will be issued after your final payment is made. Please give all completed program/ad contracts and checks made payable to St. Jude Knights Hockey Club to your team manager or mail them to Southwest Ice Arena, Attn: St. Jude Hockey Organization. Should you have any questions please contact Sue Peters at stjudehockeyregistrar@gmail.com. ST. JUDE RAFFLE CREDITS St. Jude members participate in a mandatory raffle fundraiser. Each family is required to purchase/sell $100 worth of raffle tickets on the day of rostering. 50% of all additional raffle tickets purchased will be issued after your final payment is made. Many families have saved hundreds of dollars off of their ice bill by purchasing additional raffle tickets. For more information regarding the raffle, please contact Tammy Moro at tmoro3@att.net. VOLUNTEER SERVICE CREDITS At the discretion of the Board of Directors, St. Jude may award volunteer service credits to members who provide outstanding volunteer service to the club.
