June 24, 2013 TO: Utah Amateur Hockey members FROM: Fred Wilner, Affiliate President RE: Utah Affiliate Report It has been a busy year, for Utah Amateur Hockey. In July we completed a joint marketing agreement with Total Hockey, the official retailer of USA Hockey, which will help all of our members get quality hockey gear and apparel at discount pricing. We renewed that agreement for the season. We also renewed our agreement with Harrow Sports that will help our affiliated-organizations get quality goods and discounted prices, while also returning a rebate to UAHA. In August we co-hosted a Stanley Cup party for Trevor Lewis of the Los Angeles Kings. Trevor brought The Cup home for all of Utah to see. Over 6,500 fans joined us at the event to see the Cup and take pictures with Trevor and we received full media coverage for the event. Utah Amateur Hockey put on an event in the Maverik Center parking lot that included: a dunk tank staffed by Utah referees; a roller rink hosted by the folks at the Utah Olympic Oval; a barbeque and free Utah Amateur Hockey T-shirts and program and registration information for all of our Utah Hockey organizations. In September we had three ADM clinics around the state with Joe Doyle. This year we set up an ADM intern program where we brought a dozen Utah High School Hockey players out to assist Joe and work with our youth players. Joe will return for 3 more clinics in September and we will again use ADM interns to assist him. In October, we started hosting a table during all of our Utah Grizzlies professional hockey games. We had a state banner made and invited all Utah Hockey organizations to supply us with flyers about their programs and upcoming events so we could let the hockey fans know of all the opportunities to play hockey, at all levels, in Utah.

In November we conducted multiple Try Hockey For Free Events which brought in over 300 new players to try hockey. Many of them have decided to give hockey a try this season. We also appointed JC Ynchausti, a Bountiful City Prosecutor to serve as our Safesport Coordinator. In December, we began a Middle School Program as a bridge between our youth programs and our high school league. The program quickly sold out all available spots with total participation exceeding 20% of current high school participation. Our referee organization has donated referees and is using refshadowing as a way to train younger referees how to handle 3-ref systems. In February, with the help of Utah High School Hockey, we conducted a seminar for the parents to let them know about opportunities to compete in high school hockey as well as continuing to play rec or travel hockey. We also gave 10 sets of One Goal gear to a group in southern Utah that began freezing a farm in the winter. In January, we selected a Social Media Coordinator to help us upgrade our website and link all of our local organizations to our webpage via facebook. We are also hosting an equipment exchange on the website so that our members can save money by buying and selling used gear. In February, the University of Utah, hosted the ACHA Western Regionals. There of our teams vied for the opportunity to compete at the National Tournament - Utah State was ranked first, Weber State was 5 th and the University of Utah was 6 th. Weber State defeated the University of Utah to join Utah State University at Nationals. March brought the Tier I District Tournament to Utah which will gave us another opportunity to showcase the best youth hockey teams in the Rocky Mountain District to our members and also to show our fellow RMD members how well we can host a big tournament. All 3 of the championship games were ref d by Utah referees a tremendous feather in our camps. Also in March, all of our 3 Tier II National Championship participants (Golden Eagues U18 and Jr. Grizzlies U16 and U14 teams) advanced from pool play into the quarter finals. Our State Development Camp had the highest turn out of participants ever. In May, we hosted the Rocky Mountain District Development Camp. Based on the hard work of our many great Utah volunteers and the folks at the Utah Olympic Oval, the District exercised its option to keep the camp in Utah for at least the next two years. During the camp, I also met with TC Lewis, a member of the USA Hockey Executive Committee. Along with Jared Youngman from the Grizzlies and Toby Huebner of Visit Salt Lake, we had a great meeting to let TC know our capabilities to host a future national tournament. After our meeting, I took TC on a tour of Steiner and showed him what SLC has to offer. In June, we sent a large contingent of Utah Hockey folks to the USA Hockey Annual Congress. Our new Referee-in-Chief, Jim McKenna; our new High School Hockey President, Chris Lilley; our new Tier Rep, Jennifer Lilley; Derrick Radke, our Girls/Womens Rep; and JC Ynchausti, our new SafeSport Coordinator. We were joined by several other Utah residents who hold positions in USA Hockey Bruce Karinen, our District Registrar; Kelly Grover, our District Risk Manager; Jill Day, our District Secretary; and Don Korth, the RMD Associate Referee in Chief. Highlight of the awards presentations was Morgan Marietti receiving the USA Hockey New Leader Award.

We had many valuable meetings in Colorado and also had a great road trip back where we had plenty of time to discuss a variety of Utah Hockey issues. We presented bids to all National Championship Tournaments in 2015 and I am very optimistic that we will be awarded on of them later this year. In July, we will be hosting our Annual Awards Dinner and expect the largest turnout we have ever had. We are planning a Kick-Off Event for August, with details to follow. September will bring another round of ADM Clinics with Joe Doyle coming in from USA Hockey. In October, we will get our Middle School Program going again, with more schools participating, and with the help of Utah High School Hockey. While USA Hockey s registration numbers went down this year, in large part due to the NHL lockout, we were much more successful in Utah. Despite slight losses in girls/womens and referees, our registered players increased from 4341 to With the help of some of the programs we are supporting with our USA Hockey Block Grant funds and matching RMD grants, we expect our numbers to grow again this coming year. Historically, we always see a spike in registration numbers during Olympic years. All in all, things are looking great for the continued growth of hockey in Utah. Fred Wilner, President Utah Amateur Hockey Association (801) Come Play Hockey With Us! Utah Amateur Hockey Association Treasurer s Report, Fiscal Year Ending June 30, 2013 Surplus for fiscal year ending June 30, 2013 ( FY 2013 ) projected to be roughly $15,500 compared with roughly $1,500 the prior fiscal year ended June 30, 2012 ( FY 2012 ). o o Total receipts for FY 2013 expected to approximate $95K compared with $72K in FY Player registration fees realized in both FY 2012 and FY 2013 were approximately $30K. FY 2013 benefited from a $12K grant distribution from USA Hockey. Revenues for the state development camp and Utah Union programs increased in total to $43K in FY 2013 compared with $24K in FY FY 2013 revenues additionally increased approximately $6K with the beginning of the middle school program. Prior year expenses include $8,400 in One Goal equipment purchases for which no comparable item existed in FY FY 2012 results additionally included impact of a $5,000 advance made to High School Hockey in advance of Utah s hosting of Nationals; this advance was returned to UAHA in FY 2013.

Cash on hand is anticipated to increase approximately $16,000, from $54,488 at the end of FY 2012 to $71,000 at the end of FY This increase is roughly the same amount of UAHA s net income given we operate on a cash basis. UAHA FY 2012 tax return on form 990 filed on February 19, 2013 and renewal of UAHA s registration with the Utah Division of Consumer Protection as a charitable organization completed May 14, Respectfully submitted, Scott Hinerman, CPA UAHA Treasurer Adult Council Report Season The Adult Council held its general elections meeting in May to elect its representatives for the season. Those representatives are Chris Billeter and Matt Brickley. The meeting was very productive and some good points and ideas were discussed. It seems the biggest issue discussed at the meeting with was how to cut down on the overall penalty minutes by players and teams in varies leagues. There were some good ideas discussed on how to address these issues by several of the adult leagues. Adult hockey leagues in the State of Utah are continuing to grow in player participation both winter and summer. This is partially due to new adult players who have gone through the Adult Learn to Play classes at different rinks and have continued on to play in Adult Hockey Leagues. The biggest numbers appear to be coming from those who have previously played High School Hockey and are continuing to play recreational hockey after graduating. Below are a few reports from a few of the Adult Leagues this past season. The Peaks Ice Arena reports their leagues are growing and they have held some College Classes that have helped increase their numbers in the Adult Hockey program. Salt Lake County Adult Hockey instituted some new rules to cut down on the overall penalty minutes by teams and players. The result was a substantial drop in the overall penalty minutes per player and by teams. Also, Salt Lake County started it s first adult summer hockey league with much success with a total of 30 teams to start with.

In closing, Adult Hockey in the State of Utah is doing very well and it looks like it will continue to grow. Referee Report During the Season we had 127 Officials Register with USA Hockey, 121 completed the requirements to be an official. WIHOA officials worked 3275 games this season. This is the most games that have been assigned in 4 years. Here is a list of officials that have worked the Tier I tournament in Provo and ACHA West Regional Tournament. This is good news for UAHA as most age divisions saw a small decrease in numbers. Women s hockey continues to thrive in Utah and U19 girls hockey continues to grow. Under age 12 girls numbers continue to grow and show promise towards establishing more girls only hockey programs. The U19 Lady Grizzlies and U14 Lady Lightning returned for another successful season. These two programs appear to be well established in the hockey community and now provided an excellent avenue for girls only hockey. The Lady Lighting is looking at adding a U16 team for the season. UAHA sent several girls on to District Camp this year. Kyra Yu of the NW Regulators will be playing for the Texas Alliance U15 Tier I program for the Lady Lightning Head Coach, Morgan Marietti was name one of USA Hockey s New Young Leaders.

She was also invited to the Plains District Development Camp and the USA Hockey girls National Camp. USA HOCKEY REGISTRATION NUMBERS FOR UTAH BY AGE GROUP o Total & Under o s o o Shannon Schmidt USAH Annual Congress June 5-8, 2013 Don Korth Associate Coach In Chief Rocky Mountain District Coaches Section Want a video for parents on ADM when the parent register their child. USAH doing a video on ADM. Will talk to USAH ADM coaches. Will then go around the country to talk with coaches that are doing ADM There will be another ADM Symposium. Not sure where or date Want more people to use mobile app. They might include it in all the coaching levels Want to pay more attention the Helmet Hecc certification. The expiration date is on the sticker on the back of all helmet. Not sure who will enforce it. Want travel teams to pay attention to expiration dates

because their helmet is stress more, then a house player. NO check at Pee Wee and below. But USAH want body contact at Peewees taught. USAH wants coaches to teach body contact at that age. In other words to use body to get puck but not checking. There is material out there to teach body contact. Adult are no check. Teach the skill on how to carry the puck in instead of dump and chase. AAU A good discussion on AAU. It has been in Michigan for some time. They are seeing that organizations that left are coming back. USAH wants us to get a list of 4 or 5 great qualities about USAH, so if we are confronted by AAU or someone else, so we can talk about the advantages of USAH. There are coaches taking the coaching clinic and referee clinic that are coaching and refereeing at AAU. The rule book will be for 4 years now Safe Sports was stressed. Head coach is in charge of his team. He is to make sure all players are safe, as in, equipment, locker room, on ice, no harassment. The President of USAH Ron De Gregorio (please spell Ron last name right) came in to stress the safety of all teams. It is big part of USAH programs and concern. The Pacific District is putting a bid in for a level 5 in Las Vegas Hope they get it!

Disable Section o All coaches are to be at least level one o Pushing for something about Disabilities in each level of coaching. o Coaches need to take the Special Need module. o Make sure all volunteers are screen. o Special Need Work Shop in Madison, Wisconsin October 4-6, o Talked about different ways SN has fundraised. o Talk about the Disable Festival and things they would like to change. Present awards to everyone. Early Bird payment plan and cutoff date to get the discount. The early bird discount is $350, after that $500. o All the awards come from USAH. o They want the Organization that has the Festival, to make sure they tell the Disable Board of any changes in the rinks. So that, there isn t any surprises, when they get to the Festival. o Talk about registration. It was more to the District people. General Meeting o Grow girl s hockey o We need to take care of ourselves and each other. Help grow all parts of the game.

o Always talk up the good points of USAH to counter any other organization trying to take people away from USAH. o Conclusion o I enjoyed the meetings and the association with the Utah delegation. It was fun to see all the awards give away. I enjoyed meeting new hockey people and seeing old hockey friends. There is never a bad day in hockey. Don Korth ADM ANNUAL REPORT 2013 USA Hockey's ADM (American Development Model) is alive and well in Utah. While it was slow to catch on at first and met with some resistance initially, today every association in Utah utilizes the principles ADM is built on. The idea behind ADM is teaching and reinforcing ice hockey skills at an early age so that systems may be learned more easily as players grow and mature. The main concepts behind ADM include: --Age appropriate practice drills. --Practice stations with smaller groups. --Cross-ice games for 8 and under-aged players. --Small area games for all age groups. --Making practices both challenging and fun. --Give every player the opportunity to touch the puck more often. --More efficient utilization of scarce ice. We have hosted Joe Doyle from USA Hockey several times the past four years in various rinks throughout the state to conduct ADM clinics. The purpose of the clinics is to educate coaches, players AND parents on the benefits of the ADM program. Most clinics have been well-attended and well received. Joe has been very helpful in teaching coaches various drills and ideas on better utilizing ice time. The practice methods often employ unusual games such as ice soccer or ringlets. We hold on-ice sessions for demonstrating drills and the concept of practice stations, and hold classroom sessions to teach parents and coaches how ADM will, in the long run, benefit their players as a skillsbased learning initiative. Coaches and parents are now buying in to the ADM philosophy regularly, where three to four years ago we still had objections to cross-ice games and such. Many who objected initially have aged out of the youth hockey programs. The newer parents are much more receptive to the ADM approach. In addition, most associations participate in "jamborees" (or "jams" for short) where three cross-ice games involving 8 and under players are played side- by-side at a local rink. These jams bring many teams together in one venue and have proven to be very popular among both the players and their parents. Most Utah ice sheets have portable rink dividers which separate a standard-size rink into three smaller cross-ice sized rinks. The games are for fun and the coaches generally act as referees, helping the players understand various concepts as they go. My goal is to continue to assist local associations with clinics and address concerns or questions about the program, and as a result build solid skills among our younger players to help strengthen Utah amateur hockey and ensure players enjoy practicing...because if they like to practice they will love to play. Regards, Dave Soutter ADM Director for Utah
