The season opener on Friday is set for 7 p.m. at the Appleton Family Ice Center. Saturday s road game is at 7 p.m. at the Ozaukee Ice Center. THE COACHES }Mike Szkodzinski (St. Norbert 2000) is in his eighth season at Lawrence and has a record of (.446). }Jasen Wise (St. Thomas 1996) is in his third season at Concordia (Wis.) and has a record of (.365). Wise is in his 11th season overall and has a record of (.535). THE SERIES }Lawrence holds a lead in the series, which started during the season. The Vikings won 10 consecutive games in the series, but Concordia has won the last four meetings. The Falcons have won three of those games by the identical score of 3-2. LAST SERIES Top-ranked St. Norbert swept Lawrence in a two-game NCHA quarterfinal playoff series at the Cornerstone Community Center on Feb , St. Norbert won the opener 5-0 and then took the series finale 3-1. Brandon Hoogenboom scored a pair of goals, and David Jacobson was forced to make only 12 saves to record the shutout for St. Norbert in the series opener. Mattias Soderqvist stopped 41 shots and took the loss for Lawrence. After a scoreless first period, St. Norbert got on the board with a power-play goal. Joe Perry scored 4:49 into the second period to give the Green Knights a 1-0 lead. St. Norbert then picked up a goal from Ross Pavek with just 2:30 left in the second for a 2-0 lead heading into the third. Hoogenboom scored at the 9:01 mark of the third to push the lead to 3-0, and St. Norbert finished the scoring when Hoogenboom and Michael Hill both scored in the final three minutes. In the series finale, the game was tied 1-1 late in the second period when there was a scramble near the Lawrence net. During the play, St. Norbert s Mason Baptista fell on the leg of Soderqvist. While Soderqvist was down on the ice, Marian Fiala scored on the open net with 2:38 left in the second. St. Norbert pushed the lead to 3-1 when Sam Higgins scored a powerplay goal at 7:17 of the third. Lawrence was forced to kill off a five-minute penalty later in the third period and pulled Soderqvist for the final 2:14 but couldn t pull any closer. The Green Knights took a 1-0 lead Michael Hill s unassisted power-play goal with just two seconds left in the opening period. Paul Zuke tied it for

2 Lawrence when he scored a powerplay goal on a two-man advantage at the 6:32 mark of the second. Jacobson made 14 saves to pick up the win for St. Norbert. Soderqvist stopped 34 shots for the Vikings. VIKINGS UPDATE }Lawrence opens its season at home for the second consecutive season. This also marks the fourth consecutive season Lawrence has played Concordia (Wis.) in a seasonopening series. Lawrence is just in this opening series over the past three seasons. }The Northern Collegiate Hockey Association preseason poll was released on Monday. Lawrence was picked to finish eighth by the league coaches. Defending national champion St. Norbert was picked to win the league, followed by Adrian, St. Scholastica, Lake Forest, Marian, Concordia (Wis.) and MSOE. Northland was ninth and Finlandia was picked for 10th. }The NCHA also enters the season with three teams ranked in the US- CHO.com Top 15. Defending national champion St. Norbert holds down the No. 1 ranking. Adrian checks in at No. 6 and St. Scholastica is at No. 13. }Lawrence is looking to bounce back from a difficult season that saw the Vikings win just six games. That was the lowest win total in Mike Szkodzinski s eight seasons as head coach. }Szkodzinski enters this season just 10 wins away from the 100-victory plateau. }Lawrence returns 20 players from last year s squad, including all three goaltenders. Sophomore Mattias Soderqvist (Stockholm, Sweden) saw the bulk of action in net a season ago after joining the team at midseason. Ljung played from }The Lawrence offense lost some key players (Huck Saunders, Rudi Pino), but the Vikings return their top scorer from a season ago. Sophomore forward Blake Blake Roubos Roubos (Niagara Falls, Ontario) scored 10 goals and had a team-high 16 assists for a team-best 26 points. Roubos also recorded the team s first hat trick since November 2009 when he did it against Gustavus Adolphus. SCOUTING CONCORDIA } Concordia finished sixth in the NCHA regular season standings last season, and the Falcons earned a place in the conference playoffs. The Falcons were ousted in the quarterfinal playoff series against St. Scholastica. The Falcons finished with 37 points, one marker ahead of MSOE. }Head coach Jasen Wise has done a nice job of building the program after taking over prior to the start of the season. The Falcons had won just four games in the three season prior to Wise s arrival and had never won more than four games in a season. Wise served as the coach at Marian for eight seasons prior to moving south to Mequon. }Even though the Falcons have just one senior on their roster, they return an experienced group of players. Concordia returns three double-digit goal scorers from last season. Junior Devin Stuermer and sophomore Brett Penner both scored 12 goals last season, and junior Chris Hughes had 11. }Stuermer tied for team-high honors with 13 assists, and he had a teamhigh 25 points. }Junior goaltender Domingo Torrenueva is back after seeing the bulk of time in net a season ago.
