Lawrence returns home to face MSOE in a 7 p.m. game Saturday at the Appleton Family Ice Center. THE COACHES }Mike Szkodzinski (St. Norbert 2000) is in his eighth season at Lawrence and has a record of (.460). }Mark Ostapina (Wisconsin 1979) is in his 13th season at MSOE and has a record of (.569). Ostapina is in his 28th season overall and has a record of (526). THE SERIES }MSOE holds a lead in a series that goes back to the season. The Raiders have won nine consecutive games against Lawrence, which hasn t posted a victory in the series since a 1-0 victory during the campaign. LAST SERIES Lawrence faced a pair of ranked opponents on the road last weekend and dropped both games. Second-ranked UW-Stevens Point pulled out to a big lead after two periods and went on to a 7-2 nonconference victory over Lawrence last Friday at Willett Arena. The Pointers scored less than two minutes into the game and went on to build a 3-0 lead after the first period. Stevens Point added two more goals in the second period to construct a 5-0 edge. Lawrence got third-period goals from freshman forward Blake Roubos and senior forward Huck Saunders. Patrick Coyne assisted on both goals for the Vikings, and Roubos also picked up an assist on Saunders tally. Max Bobrow scored a pair of goals for the Pointers, and Tyler Krueger had three assists. Blake Roubos Brandon Jaeger stopped 30 shots to pick up the win for Stevens Point. Anton Olsson stopped 41 shots for the Vikings in the loss. Goaltender Jay Deo made 27 saves and No. 10 UW-Eau Claire downed Lawrence 4-0 on Saturday. The Blugolds got goals from four different players, and Brian Nehring had three assists for Eau Claire. Eau Claire grabbed a 1-0 lead on David Donnellan s goal midway through the first period. The Blugolds got goals from Jon Waggoner and Mark Pustin in the second period, and Ethan Nauman s third-period goal completed the scoring. Mattias Soderqvist made 41 saves and took the loss for Lawrence. The Vikings forced Eau Claire to go 0-for-9 on the power play.
2 VIKINGS UPDATE }Lawrence has run the gauntlet the last month. Six of Lawrence s last seven opponents are teams ranked in the top 10 in the USCHO.com Top 15. Lawrence has a record in those games. }Freshman forward Blake Roubos (Niagara Falls, Ontario) picked up two points with a goal and an assist against UW-Stevens Point and continues to lead the team in scoring. Roubos has a team-high seven goals to go along with 10 assists for 17 points. }Roubos ranks first in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association in freshman scoring at 1.13 points per game. The next three spots in the rankings all belong to players from Concordia (Wis.). Roubos ranks eighth overall in the league in scoring. }Sophomore defenseman Brandon Boelter (Saginaw, Mich.) leads the team with 11 assists and is tied for third with 12 points. Boelter is tied with Adrian s Brandon Boelter Chris Leone for the top spot in the NCHA for defenseman scoring at 0.80 points per game. }Senior forward Huck Saunders (Seattle, Wash.), who had a goal against UW-Stevens Point last Friday, is having one of the best seasons of his career. Freshman goaltender Mattias Soderqvist (Stockholm, Sweden) and junior Anton Olsson (Stromstad, Sweden) appear to be the candidates to nail down the starting job. Olsson has an.893 save percentage and 4.27 goals against average, and Soderqvist is at.867 with a 5.68 GAA. }The Vikings rank sixth in the NCHA on the power play at 15.3 percent. Lawrence has converted 11 of 72 chances on the man-advantage. }Lawrence still ranks ninth in the league on the penalty kill, but the Vikings had a great weekend with this part of their special teams. Lawrence didn t allow a power-play goal against No. 2 UW-Stevens Point (0-for-4) and No. 10 UW-Eau Claire (0-for-9). The combined 0-for-13 over the weekend improved Lawrence to 80.2 percent on the penalty kill. The Vikings are ninth in scoring defense at 4.60 goals per contest. SCOUTING MSOE }The Raiders posted a tie and a loss in its two nonconference road games this past weekend. MSOE lost 3-1 at Augsburg last Friday and then skated to a 2-2 overtime with at St. Mary s on Saturday. Augsburg was nursing a one-goal lead when it picked up an empty-net goal with 29 ticks left in the game. MSOE got a short-hander and a power-play goal in the second period at St. Mary s, but the Cardinals scored early in the third period to tie it. 4 }This is easily the worst start to a season for the Raiders since Mark Ostapina became the head coach back in Ostapina, whose teams have been consistently among the league s best for the past decade, hasn t had a losing record since the Raiders went back in MSOE is in danger of posting its worst record since going in the season. }Freshman forward Gage Christianson leads the Raiders in all scoring categories. He has a team-high three goals and four assists for seven points. The top three scorers on the team are all first-year players. }The Raiders have scored just 18 goals in 15 games this season. MSOE ranks last in the NCHA in scoring offense at 1.20 goals per game. }MSOE has been shut out six times this season, but only one of those have come in the last six games. }MSOE scored a season-best five goals in their Dec. 7 win at Northland (5-1). The Raiders have scored more than one goal in only four games this season. }The Raiders, always strong on defense, rank sixth in the NCHA in scoring defense at 3.33 goals per game. }Sophomore Nick Kohn has seen the majority of minutes in net this season. 8 GAME RECAPS November 1 Concordia (Wis.) 6, Lawrence 2 APPLETON, Wis. The Concordia (Wis.) University hockey team scored three third-period goals to pull away for a 6-2 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association win over Lawrence University in the season opener at the Appleton Family Ice Center. Lawrence (0-1-0, NCHA) trailed just 3-2 heading into the third, but the Falcons (1-0-0, 1-0-0) got a power-play goal midway through the period and then added two more in the final five minutes to seal the win. Eli Riddle, Devin Stuermer and Buster Hebda all had a goal and an assist for the Falcons. Jake Hebda made 26 saves to pick up the win in net. Concordia led 2-0 after the first and pushed that lead to 3-0 with a power-play goal at the 9:19 of the second. Lawrence fought back with a pair of goals from Huck Saunders. Saunders scored on a two-man advantage at the 15:16 mark off an assist from Blake Roubos to cut the lead to 3-1. Saunders then scored again just before the horn sounded at the end of the second period to trim the margin to 3-2. The lone penalty of the third period resulted in Concordia s second power-play goal of the night when Riddle scored at 11:13. The Falcons then got goals at 15:51 and 16:25 to complete the scoring. Peter Emery stopped 25 shots and took the loss for Lawrence. November 2 Concordia (Wis.) 3, Lawrence 2 (OT) MEQUON, Wis. Dylan Hutton scored 33 seconds into overtime to lift the Concordia (Wis.) University hockey team to a 3-2 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association victory over Lawrence University at the Ozaukee Ice Center. Lawrence (0-2-0, NCHA) fought back from a pair of deficits to force the extra period. The Vikings trailed 1-0 after the first period, but Rudi Pino scored at 7:09 of the second to tie it. The Falcons (2-0-0, 2-0-0) grabbed the lead back when Chris Hughes scored at the 16:50 mark, and Concordia led 2-1 after two periods. Patrick Coyne evened the score at 2-2 when he scored at the 9:04 mark of the third. The game went to overtime with the Vikings finishing up a power play, but Concordia struck for the gamewinner just 25 seconds after the penalty expired. Hutton scored off a pass from Buster Hebda to give Concordia the win and a sweep of the weekend series. Anton Olsson made 35 saves and took the loss for Lawrence. Jake Hebda made 34 saves to pick up the win. November 8 Lawrence 3, Marian 1 APPLETON, Wis. The Lawrence University hockey team got a pair of thirdperiod goals and downed Marian University 3-1 in a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association game at the Appleton Family Ice Center. It was the opener in the annual Battle of Highway 41 series, which the Sabres won last season. Lawrence (1-2-0, NCHA) needs a win or tie on Saturday night to take back the traveling trophy. The game was tied 1-1 heading to the third period when Paul Zuke took a pass from Patrick Coyne and beat Marian goaltender Josh Baker at the 5:26 mark. The Vikings still held the 2-1 advantage late in the game when Marian pulled Baker with 1:21 remaining. The Sabres put on some pressure before William Thoren grabbed the puck for Lawrence. His pass off the boards found Erik Soderlund, who fed Rudi Pino for an empty-net goal with 35 seconds left to seal the win. Marian (0-4-0, 0-3-0) led 1-0 on Ben Morgan s goal at the 5:40 mark of the first period. Lawrence tied it at 1-1 when Huck Saunders scored on the power play at the 11:47 mark of the second. Anton Olsson was superb in net for the Vikings, as he stopped 23 shots. Baker had 22 saves for Marian. November 9 Marian 6, Lawrence 2 FOND DU LAC, Wis. Brian Berger and Scott Milnthorp both scored a pair of goals, and Marian University rolled to a 6-2 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association win over Lawrence University at the Blue Line Ice Center. The win allowed Marian (1-4-0, NCHA)to split the weekend series and keep possession of the Battle of Highway 41 traveling trophy. Lawrence (1-3-0, 1-3-0) had defeated the Sabres 3-1 on Friday night. Berger scored on the power play at the 15:41 mark of the first period to give the Sabres a 1-0 lead. Marian then pulled away with two goals in the first 4:40 of the second period. Derek Perl scored 1:21 into the second, and Milnthorp scored on the power play at 4:40. Matt Moore got Lawrence on the board with a goal at the 5:13 mark, but Berger answered for the Sabres with a goal at 7:29 to push Marian s lead back to 4-1. The Sabres got third-period goals from Milnthorp and Rjay Berra to seal the win. Rudi Pino added a late goal for the Vikings. Mike Baldwin made 20 saves to pick up the win for Marian. Anton Olsson and Peter Emery both allowed three goals for the Vikings.
9 GAME RECAPS November 15 Northland 4, Lawrence 3 ASHLAND, Wis. The Northland College hockey team held off Lawrence University and posted a 4-3 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association victory the Vikings at the Bay Area Civic Center. Northland (1-4-0, NCHA) scored the first two goals of the third period to break a 2-2 tie. Thomas Greene scored just 2:52 into the final period, and Anthony Stempin added a goal at the 8:55 mark to put the Lumberjacks up by two. Rudi Pino then scored his second goal of the game for Lawrence (1-4- 0, 1-4-0) at the 18:34 mark off assists from Brandon Boelter and Logan Lemirande to cut the lead to 4-3. The Vikings pulled goaltender Peter Emery for the final minute of the game but couldn t get the equalizer against Northland goalie Jesse DiLillo. DiLillo stopped 41 shots for the Lumberjacks. Lawrence had a edge in shots. Lawrence rallied from a pair of one-goal deficits in the first two periods. After Mike Mikulan scored just 14 seconds into the game, freshman Blake Roubos scored for Lawrence with just 20 seconds left in the opening period to tie the game at 1-1. Connor Quinn gave Northland a 2-1 lead with 3:01 left in the second period, but Pino scored a short-handed goal with just 12 seconds left in the period to tie the game again. Freshman forward Blake Roubos scored twice, and the Lawrence University hockey team held off a late rally by Northland College to down the Lumberjacks 5-3 in a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association game at the Bay Area Civic Center. Lawrence (2-4-0, NCHA) earned a split of the weekend series after falling 4-3 on Friday night to Northland (1-5-0, 1-5-0). The Vikings led 4-2 when Northland scored a pair of goals in a 15-second span with just over two minutes left in the game. The Lumberjacks were then whistled for boarding with 1:29 left but pulled goaltender Jesse DiLillo in the final minute. Lawrence s Logan Lemirande then sealed the victory with an empty-net goal with just 21 seconds remaining. Roubos got Lawrence on the board just 7:39 into the game when he scored off a pass from William Thoren. Huck Saunders made it 2-0 Lawrence when he scored with 5:10 left in the second period off assists from Roubos and Lemirande. Northland cut the lead in half on Mike Lennon s goal 4:33 into the third period. Roubos stretched the lead back to 3-1 when he scored on the power play at the 7:06 mark. Lemirande and Boelter picked up assists on that goal. Thoren made it 4-1 when he scored on his first goal of the season on a two-man advantage at the 10:33 mark. Roubos finished with three points on two goals and an assist, and Lemirande also had three points on a goal and two assists. Lawrence goaltender Peter Emery got the win after stopping 23 shots. DiLillo made 35 saves for the Lumberjacks. November 29 Lawrence 6, Gustavus Adolphus 6 APPLETON, Wis. Freshman Blake Roubos scored with nine seconds left in regulation to lift the Lawrence University hockey team to a 6-6 tie with Gustavus Adolphus College in a nonconference game at the Appleton Family Ice Center. Trailing 6-5, Lawrence pulled goaltender Anton Olsson with 50 seconds left in regulation. With the extra attacker on the ice, Roubos beat goaltender John McLean for the tying goal. Huck Saunders and Brandon Boelter picked up assists on the game-tying tally. Both teams had good chances in the five-minute overtime, but neither squad was able to score. Lawrence (2-4-1) looked like it might put the game away early after scoring five consecutive goals. The Vikings got goals from Logan Lemirande and Boelter in the first period and led 2-1 heading into the first intermission. The Vikings then scored the first three goals of the second period. Saunders got things started just 21 seconds into the second, and Roubos and Ryan Rumble both picked up goals to put the Vikings up 5-1 with 5:57 left in that period. Gustavus (5-3-1) then ripped off the game s next five goals to take a 6-5 lead. The Gusties scored three times in the final 5:01 of the second to trim the margin to 5-4 after two periods. Tyler Lapic then scored just 1:21 into the third to tie the game at 5-5, and Gustavus Corey Leivermann scored at the 4:22 mark to put the Gusties up 6-5. Olsson stopped 56 shots for Lawrence, and McLean made 31 saves for the Gusties. November 30 St. Olaf 5, Lawrence 1 APPLETON, Wis. The St. Norbert College hockey team broke the game open with two second-period goals and went on to a 4-0 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association win over Lawrence University at the Appleton Family Ice Center. The second-ranked Green Knights (10-1-0, NCHA) broke a scoreless tie with Brandon Hoogenboom s goal just 2:33 into the second period. Lawrence (3-6-1, NCHA) scored four unanswered goals in the final period to take the victory over the second-ranked Green Knights. St. Norbert (10-2-0, 7-1-0) had built a 3-1 lead through two periods with the help of two power-play goals in the opening period. The Green Knights made it 4-1 after Erik Cooper s unassisted goal just 1:08 into the third. Lawrence started the rally with a goal just 27 seconds later. Gustav Lindgren scored off assists from William Thoren and Ryan Eardley to cut the defict to 4-2. Lawrence s Renato Engler then picked up his first goal of the season off assists from Rudi Pino and Paul Zuke at the 11:24 mark and the deficit was only 4-3. Lawrence University scored three times in the third period and displayed a dominant power play en route to a 5-2 nonconference hockey win over St. Mary s (Minn.) University. Lawrence (4-6-1) scored twice on the power play in a span of 1:01 in the third period to seal the victory, and the Vikings finished 4-for-8 on the man-advantage. After Lawrence grabbed a 3-1 lead on Ryan Eardley s first career goal at 3:18 of the third period, St. Mary s (5-6-0) cut the lead to one goal with a power-play goal at the 9:50 mark. The Cardinals were back on the power play when Renato Engler got sent off for hooking at 13:28, but St. Mary s was whistled for a pair of penalties in the next 1:29.
