In 4-H, we write thank you cards and give out ribbons and awards, but recognition is so much more than just that. There are five types of recognition: 1) Participation As it sounds, members are recognized for completing a project or activity. 2) Progress Toward Self-Set Goals Every project has requirements for setting goals. Reaching those goals is an achievement! 3) Achievement of Standards This is where the blue, red, and white ribbons come into play. Blue ribbons mean an A or the highest standard is reached. Red ribbons are like a B. White ribbons indicate that the minimum was completed. 4) Peer Competition When thinking of peer competition, think of Top Projects or Grand/Reserve. This is where youth compete for rankings. 5) Excellence in Cooperation This is a group recognition in which the group works towards a common goal. An example of this would be the Herdsmanship Award. While we all work through Fair and Recognition Night, please think about the educational value of the types of recognition. Everyone needs to be recognized for their hard work and accomplishments. We may do this in different ways, but each is equally important. Members should be encouraged to access how they did and think about how they could improve next time. Judges often give comments and feedback, but if none is available, they should ask their leader or superintendent for help in finding out how they can improve. Everyone should also remember that a judge s decision, while it is something we should respect, is made by an individual on one day out of the year. They aren t infallible. Judge s are human and do their best to make some tough decisions. Also, please note that Cloverbuds (members aged 5-7) don t participate in true competition. It is believed that, as an age group, they are not developmentally ready to understand competition. The University of Idaho is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer and educational organization. We offer our programs to persons regardless of race, color, national origin, gender, religion, age, sexual orientation, or disability. 1

Do you play the license plate game and guess either county seats, or figure out what specialty plate is currently on the road? I m blessed to travel this state in several capacities with organizations I belong too and am intrigued by plates. BUT the coolest part is, Idaho has a 4-H plate!! How many have you seen on the road? I was very nervous to testify in front of both House and Senate Transportation committees in favor of this plate. But without ALL the support of youth and adults statewide for our petition, it would have not happened. This is where my CHALLENGE COMES INTO PLAY There are roughly 80 leaders involved with Gem-Boise County 4-H and out of that number only 5 of us have 4 -H plates. WHAT!?!?!?!?! Our counties should have at least minimum people with a 4-H plate on their vehicle. It does cost $35.00 extra on top of registration fees the first year, and $25.00 extra every year when your registration is renewed. The plate may also be personalized for additional fees with a 5 letter/ number combination allowed. ALSO, you can put on your truck if hauling a trailer and headed to shows. Does a local business need 4-H plates on their fleet? Yes they do! The breakdown of fees that the ITD collects and Idaho 4-H collects, part of those dollars will come back to Gem-Boise County 4-H. Those dollars can be used in the county for anything we want i.e; scholarships, day camps, education days, and the list goes on. What a better support of our youth for the future? So, my challenge is for you is to put a 4-H plate on your vehicle and proudly help support by making the best better. I will be watching for you on the road. 4

Demonstrations & Illustrated Talks given at Communications Rodeo- All projects Herdsmanship Award It is the second year that we have had a Herdsmanship Award at fair! We have found that many people still don t know what it is! Herdsmanship is an award that is competed for by clubs. Herdsmanship judging provides an opportunity to recognize clubs and the members in those clubs for responsible behavior and quality work while taking care of their animals. The goals of the Herdsmanship award are: 1) Club/chapter cooperation and camaraderie 2) Ensure that all animals have a high level of care 3) Encourage the public to view the animals in a positive light Clubs are divided into small (3 species or less) and large (4 or more species) shown by the club. They are judged on general cleanliness of barns, cleanliness of pens, arrangement of exhibits (in barn and in 4-H Building), and appearance of animals. 4-H/FFA members should plan to have animal chores done by 9:00am every day of fair. Herdsmanship judges will come through the barns once a day between 9:00am - 6:00pm. The winning clubs will be announced at Recognition Night on September 24th! Clubs must sign-up to be considered for the award. Sign-ups are due by Fair Orientation on Friday, July 29th. Sign-ups are available from the Extension Office. Clean Barn Awards Did you know that there are Clean Barn Awards given out throughout the week of Fair?? Superintendents are watching individual youth (4-H & FFA) throughout the week of fair and choosing Daily (Wednesday Saturday) Clean Barn Awards! Besides Daily Clean Barn Awards, Superintendents will also choose an Top Clean Barn Award winner to be recognized at Recognition Night! 7

8 New Campsites During Fair The Gem County Fair Board has decided to allow families who have an animal showing at this years fair to camp overnight in our designated camping area. This area is limited and has no access to water or power. There is a $25.00 refundable cleaning/maintenance deposit and a $10.00 camping fee per campsite. Each camper must check in at the fair office and receive a permit which will be placed on the outside of each camp tent/trailer. Trailers will be allowed, however, the more trailers we have the less space we have for tent camping. Each campsite will be allowed 1 vehicle for parking in the camping area. Space is limited and in the event we have more families request camping than space allows the fair board will work with the Extension Office to determine necessity for these sites. If you are interested in camping on the fairgrounds please Debbie at the fair office and let her know how many people and what size your tent/trailer is. We will work diligently to accommodate as many people as we can. Debbie can be reached at the Fair Board Office by calling Other Changes at Fair There are some big changes happening at fair! Some that don t directly involve 4-H and FFA, but are fun and good for everyone to know ahead of time! This year the Fair Board has decided to have a Kids Rodeo on Thursday night! Events will include: Mutton Bustin, Jr. Team Roping, Jr. Barrels, Jr. Steer Riding, Jr. Calf Riding, Goat Tying, Pole Bending, and Chute Dogging. Sign-ups will be by phone ( ) on July from 1:00 4:30 pm. There will also be a Kids Carnival in the Horse Paddock (the area between the Fair Board Office and Grandstands). It will feature low cost games for kids. If any 4-H Clubs have, want, or who does have a game they can bring for this area (ex: games that are brought to YAD), please contact the Extension Office. The EHS Biology Club will be running the games on Wednesday from 5-8 pm and Thursday from 1-8 pm. The Open Class exhibits are moving to the National Guard Armory from the Expo Building. The Expo Building will now feature more vendor spaces, which are starting to fill up! Wednesday night of fair at 7:00 pm there will be a Tractor and Truck Pull by Believe Pulling Sled. 9 Poultry at Fair Our office is highly recommending that poultry coming to the Gem/Boise County Fair be tested prior to fair. The Idaho State Department of Agriculture will provide testing free of charge and are willing to come to you to do it. Someone from their office will be contacting you soon to set up a time to test your birds. In order to get the test results in time for fair, the testing window needs to be July 18, 19, and maybe the 20 th. While this is not mandatory, we strongly recommend it. Even more so if you have any type of waterfowl on your property. Although there have been no cases of Avian Influenza in Idaho this year, there is still a threat. Not only will testing help protect your birds and birds throughout our area, but it will also help IDSA s testing program through the National Poultry Improvement Plan. The best news in all of this is that we can have waterfowl at fair again this year! Continuing to protect our birds by working with ISDA and having Veterinary Checks at fair check-in are excellent ways to ensure that we can continue to safely have poultry at our fair. While we can never fully eliminate the risk of disease at fair, we can greatly reduce the risk. Thank you for your help with this! Please let Carrie know if you have any questions. Johns Ave. Grassy Area After discussion with concerned people and the Gem County Fair Board, the grassy area along Johns Ave. will now have allotted spaces for club use only during fair. At the July Leaders Meeting, spaces were drawn for and clubs have designated spaces. Please check with your 4-H Leader to find out if your club has a space and where that space is. If your club does not have a space, 4-H Leaders may signup their club for one of the remaining 4 spaces. During fair, please be respectful of the space used by other clubs. There is limited grassy areas on the Gem County Fairgrounds and we want to give everyone an opportunity to enjoy it during fair! Rabbit Showmanship Resource Looking for a resource on showing Rabbits? Check out the University of Nebraska-Lincoln s Basic Rabbit Showmanship Resource for information and videos on showing and grooming your rabbit. The page can be accessed by going to: rabbit/showmanship.shtml. When I Compete I have a performance goal never a only to beat someone else goal I respect and learn from other competitors more skilled than myself I don t criticize other competitors, officials or judges I do my best today I have fun I stay home if I can t follow these rules 9
