Twenty-seven officers from the four counties learned about the roles and responsibilities of each office, participated in mixer and team building games and watched a role play of a bad and a good 4-H meeting. Participants gained skills they will be able to use in their individual 4-H clubs. 2 STATE 4-H POULTRY JUDGING CONTEST August 9, :30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Orr Building Participation: A county/unit may enter any number of 4-H participants. A county/unit team may be made up of three or four contestants with no limit on the number of teams or individuals. The scores of the three highest scoring individuals from each team will be totaled to determine each team score. All contestants will be eligible for all individual honors. The four highest senior 4-H ers will be selected to participate on the state team. A senior 4-H er is one who is years of age by January 1 of the current year. The individuals that score the highest will be invited to participate in the National 4-H poultry and Egg Conference during the third week of November in Louisville, KY. Registration: Beginning at 8:30 a.m. on August 9, Classes: Three (3) classes of post egg production; four (4) classes of ready-to-cook fowl or fryers; one (1) class of ready-to-cook turkeys; one (1) class of broken out eggs; two (2) classes of shell eggs (candled) and two (2) classes of exterior egg quality. Contestants will give oral reasons on two of the three post egg production classes. Ten (10) minutes will be allowed for placing the rings and two (2) minutes will be allowed to give oral reasons to the judge. Contact the local Extension office for educational materials. 4-H DAIRY CATTLE JUDGING CONTEST Saturday, August 18th 10:00 a.m. Livestock Center Illinois State Fair Grounds Participation: All contestants must be current 4-H members and a record of their enrollment must be on file in the respective Extension office. There is no limit on the number of participants per county. Contestants need not be enrolled in a dairy project, however, this state 4-H dairy judging event is used to support the county/club 4-H dairy curriculum. Registration: Begins at 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. on the day of the show at the site of the contest. The contest will begin at 10:00 a.m. Classes: here will be six (6) classes of cows and heifers selected from various dairy breeds at the Illinois State Fair. All 4-H contestants will be scored as a Jr. Division (13 years of age and younger as of January 1, 2012) or Sr. Division (14 years and older as of January 1, 2012) participant. All participants will be invited to present oral reasons following the contest but it is not mandatory. Contestants in the Jr. Division will be encouraged and offered the opportunity to give one set of written or oral reasons on a cow class. The Jr. contestants can read or recite from memory their reasons. HOWEVER, contestants in the Sr. Division who will be considered for selection to the State 4-H Team will be required to give two sets of oral reasons on cow classes. Two (2) minutes will be allowed per class to give oral reasons to the judge. Ten (10) minutes will be allowed for judging each class when no reasons are required; twenty (20) minutes will be allowed on reasons classes Illinois Team Selected for the National Contest The state 4-H dairy cattle judging team will be selected from participants in this contest. To be eligible for selection, members must have been 14 years of age and not older than 18 years of age as of January 1, 2012.

FOR MILITARY KIDS April marks Month of the Military Child, a time to honor youth impacted by deployment. In celebration, Illinois Operation: Military Kids (OMK), part of the 4-H Youth Development program, invites you to join us for Purple Up! For Military Kids. Register at: We are encouraging every Illinoisan to wear purple on Friday, April 13th as a visible way to show support and thank military children for their strength and sacrifices. Purple is the color that symbolizes all branches of the military, as it is the combination of Army green, Coast Guard blue, Air Force blue, Marine red and Navy blue. Wall of Heroes Month of April When going online to register for Purple Up! registrants also have the option to participate in creating a Wall of Heroes through their 4-H club, school, business, library, or other civic organization. Registration for this provides a downloadable toolkit that includes ideas for photos, banners, proclamation, and other promotion items.

There are openings for youth ages (limited); 16 and over (LOTS) and adults as judges, project assistants, livestock crew, superintendents, and set-up crew. PASSES & PARKING FOR THE ILLINOIS STATE FAIR If you will be requiring extra parking or passes and you have specific dates you need parking for, Please get your requests into the office by June 1, STATE 4-H YOUTH LEADERSHIP TEAM Are You Interested In Providing Leadership to the Illinois 4-H Program? Membership Criteria: Applicants must be 4-H members or recent 4-H alumni, ages as of September 1, Members may serve until they are age 21 by September 1. Terms are 2 years in length, beginning September 1. Members can serve a maximum of two, 2-year terms (4 years). Applicants under the age of 18 must have parental or guardian support. Team members must attend a minimum of 1 of the 2 face-to-face meetings and 75% of the scheduled Telenets each year of their term. Faceto-face meetings include two weekends (Fri night through Sunday) which includes the Jr. Leadership Conference. Team members are required to make quarterly reports to their local Extension staff Team members must be active participants in at least 2 statewide events or represent 4-H on statewide committees and the Junior Leadership Conference each year. 5 HOST FAMLIES NEEDED FOR EXCHANGE PROGRAMS Are you interested in being a host family for a Japanese youth (ages 12-16)? Families are needed for these youth for approximately one month from July 25th to August 23, Families will have opportunities to learn about Japanese life and culture and share their own culture. 6 GREAT AMERICAN NO BULL CHALLENGE The Great American NO BULL Challenge is the largest campaign to combat cyberbullying in America's history: The Great American NO BULL Challenge, invites 4-H's to get involved with the annual campaign that inspires America's 25 million teens to stand up and create a video with an anti-bullying message. Check the website at: The Great American NO BULL Challenge offers teens in 6 th 12 th grades the opportunity to write and direct videos on the danger of cyberbullying and be a part of a national competition where the winners will be recognized as a celebrity at the star-studded NO BULL Red Carpet Awards Event in San Francisco on July 21, TH ANNUAL ILLINOIS STATE 4-H ROBOTICS CHALLENGE APRIL 14, p.m. (Noon Registration) MP6 Gym, athletics recreation center on university of Illinois (Champaign/Urbana) campus WELCOME TO THE FARMBOT CHALLENGE! Teams of 3 or more 4-H members (ages 9-18 are invited to compete in this years statewide robotics challenge. The FarmBot objective is to collect two crops from the field and sort/deposit into separate bins. Each team that registers will receive ten (10) 1-inch wooden blocks free of cost to prepare for this challenge For registration and more information about the FarmBot Challenge, click on the following link: Summer Days is the theme for the Christian County HCEA Table Setting Luncheon and Plant Sale on April 28, 2012 from 10:00 a.m. 2:00 p.m. at the U of I Extension auditorium. Clubs and individuals (includes a youth division this year) are invited to create a table setting to be judged. Displays can be set up on Friday, April 27 and must be removed by 3:00 p.m. on the 28th. You must provide a card table, and at least one table setting to be viewed and judged. This can be a fun event, so let your imagination run wild! Themes are great! sports, holidays and even 4-H tables have been used in the past! Lunch tickets for the event are $6.00. Contact Jodi if you need more information or plan to participate. 4-H Ambassador Contest Applications are now available at the University of Illinois Extension office for the Christian County Ambassador Contest. They are due back to the Extension office on April 30, 2012 and interviews will be held on May 22. Any 4-H member in the eighth grade or older may apply to be an ambassador. Those who are chosen will represent Christian County at various activities throughout the year. Some ambassador responsibilities include assisting at the fair, making appearances promoting 4-H, attending parades and other community functions. The winners will receive a savings bond and an ambassador name tag to wear at events.

Not Pictured: Hanna Buzzard and Kourtney White-Watts. Friday March 30, 2012, University of Illinois Extension Christian County 4-H hosted a 4-H International Night. The 4-H clubs in the county are given the opportunity to research and do a presentation on different countries. Each family was asked to bring a food dish to share from the country that they had researched. Tri County kids chose Grenada, Go-getters - Israel, Green Wolves -Madagascar, Clover Club -Macedonia, Mt. Auburn Rustlers -Germany, Owaneco Indians and Maidens -Egypt and New Vision- Belgium. The event is a way to learn and have fun at the same time. Over 50 people enjoyed the potluck styled meal, featuring foods from the various countries. Many of the clubs provided some great presentations, complete with display boards and speaking parts allowing many club members to be involved. One club was resourceful enough to master their members having more than one place to be! With the help of Rebecca Wiggin s dad Kirby Hames almost 90% of the Clover club was able to help in the presentation of an 11 minute video. Christian County 4-H Foundation Scholarship Recipients Chosen. Congratulations go out to Rochelle Meteer and Felicity Witt. Rochelle is the daughter of Lee and Karla Meteer of Blue Mound and a members of the Mount Auburn Rustlers 4-H Club. She has been active in 4-H for 10 years. Rochelle s plan is to pursue a career in Animal Science/Pre Vet at Lincoln Land Community College and University of Illinois. Felicity is the daughter of Steve and Tammy Witt of Taylorville and a member of the Owaneco Indians & Maidens 4-H Club. She has been active in 4-H for 10 years. Felicity is participating in Certified Nursing Assistant Program and hopes to pursue a Career in Psychology. It is the 4-H Foundation s goal to help prepare their applicants for the bigger opportunities that are available. They have set a ridge set of guidelines and an interview process that will allow the applicants the opportunity to practice and prepare for their future beyond Christian County!

10 Christian County Public Speaking contest will be held on Tuesday evening May 22, Beginning at 6:00 p.m. If you are enrolled in public speaking and would like to give a presentation at this contest please provide the following information to the Extension Office before May 11, Name Club Phone # Type of Speech RULES: Exhibitors should come prepared to tell stage crew where they want props, microphone, etc. placed on stage. Presentations will take place in open rooms or theaters the general public will be moving in and out of the rooms. The only equipment provided (upon request) will be a podium, table, screen, LCD projector, and extension cord. Requested items should be noted on 4-HDMS electronic entry notes. (NOTE: This includes the brand/type of laptop that the exhibitor will be bringing so we have the appropriate adaptor for the projector.) No parents or supervising adults will be permitted in the staging areas or to assist with equipment being used in the presentation. State Fair staff assistance can be requested in advance; Requests should be noted on 4-HDMS entry notes. No live animals are allowed in illustrated speeches due to restrictions on certain animals entering the fairgrounds FORMAL SPEECH (SF) - Formal speeches (without props or aids) must be between 4-6 minutes in length and done by an individual member. Formal speeches provide information to the audience EXTEMPORE SPEECH -.(COUNTY ONLY NOT ELIGIBLE FOR STATE FAIR) Topics will relate to events of state, national or international importance from January to August of the current year. Exhibitors will draw three topic options for their speech from a large number of topics. They will immediately select one of these three topics for their speech. Participants will have 45 minutes to prepare a 4-6 minute speech. Participants are responsible for providing their own research materials and writing/ note-taking supplies for this class. Laptops may be used. Accessibility to the internet will not be provided by the State Fair. Exhibitors may bring their own wireless devices, however an open internet connection is not guaranteed DEMONSTRATION - (COUNTY ONLY NOT ELIGIBLE FOR STATE FAIR) Demonstrations may pertain to any topic (Exception: Foods-Nutrition entries must enter through the appropriate foods class.) Demonstrations may be given by an individual or a team of two members. Exhibitors are responsible for furnishing all equipment and supplies needed. Demonstrations must be 8-10 minutes in length. Food Demonstrations are not a division of Public Presentations; see class under FOOD and NUTRITION. NOTE: Members wishing to do public presentations with Horticulture subject matter should enter the Horticulture Public Speaking & Demonstration Contests in June on the University of Illinois campus in Champaign-Urbana. This includes members who wish to participate in a Flower Arranging Demonstration ILLUSTRATED SPEECH (SF) - Illustrated speeches (with any type of visual aids) must be between 4-6 minutes in length and done by an individual member ORIGINAL WORKS (SF) - Member may present any type of original works (i.e. comedy, storytelling, original poetry, radio segment, etc.) May be done by an individual or a team of no more than three members. Works must have been written by one of the team members. Segment must be between 4-6 minutes in length. Original work presentations are designed to entertain an audience ORAL INTERPRETATION (SF) - May be humorous or dramatic interpretation, oratorical declamation, prose reading or verse reading. Material may be read or memorized. May be done by an individual or a team of no more than three members. Musical presentations are not appropriate for this class. Interpretation must be between 4-6 minutes in length. State Fair Christian County may submit FOUR entries in Public Presentations. However no more than one entry may be made in an individual class. This project area will be at the State Fair on Friday, August 10, 2012.

11 University of Illinois- Unit 18 Christian County, Jersy County and Macoupin County Offices will be closed on Tuesday, April 24, The staff will be attending a regional all staff meeting in Jacksonville. Reminders: You need to make sure you are enrolled in the project areas you are planning to exhibit by April 15, NOW! Horse Exhibitors must have ownership papers with color pictures turned into the office by May 1, State Fair entries will be due June 1, Required for State and County Fair. State Fair live animal exhibitors: All Livestock: Quality Assurance Ethics Certification QAEC is available and highly recommended for all youth exhibit any live animal at any fair. Swine: Pork Quality Assurance is required. Youth must be certified by attending a class or by testing out. Upon completion a card is issued with an expiration date that you must maintain. This must be complete before July 15. Sheep and Goats: Must be weighed and tattooed at a region weigh in listed earlier in this publication. Beef Steers: Must have been weighed and tattooed before March 15, Christian County data was sent out for validation with no replies and has now been forwarded on the Dan Jennings. General 4-H Projects: Must be selected at the county level to advance to the Illinois State Fair! Nancy Marsh is retiring!!!
