1 ATASCOSA 4-H NEWSLETTER Texas A&M AgriLife Extension September 2016 Enrollment for the new 4-H Year is open NOW on 4-H Connect A quick reminder for our families: Our contact information changed over the summer. Please make note of our phone numbers and update your contacts list. texas.4honline.com LOG ON TODAY What is 4 HConnect? 4HConnect is a web based system used to enroll youth and accept applications for adults in the Texas 4 H Youth Development Program. It is also the only system Atascosa 4 H uses for registration and keeping mailing list and contact information current. Please be sure to update it as needed. Once registered, you will receive the Atascosa 4 H newsletter every month in the mail. How much does it cost? 4 H has a participation costs of $20 (before November 1st of each year) to $25 (November 1st and after) to join. Some projects might cost something to get started like, if you want to do photography, you ll need a camera and money to get pictures developed. Registered adult volunteers are charged $5.00 annually. What about your parents or guardians? The Texas 4 H Youth Development Program relies heavily on volunteers to reach more youth, lead educational programs, coordinate activities, and manage clubs and groups. There are several roles a volunteer can serve which work with personal and family schedules, areas of expertise, and amount of time a volunteer is willing to contribute. County Extension Agents provide support to volunteers through training, curriculum resources, and opportunities to be engaged as a volunteer. Your parents don t have to become 4 H leaders/volunteers when you join 4 H, but there are lots of ways they can help. Adults should only register on 4 H Connect when volunteering within the group in leadership positions and when planning to chaperone/drive 4 H youth (other than their own) to any event. 25 E. 6 Food Project Information I know many of you have been patiently awaiting the release of the 2017 Texas 4-H Food Show theme! Thank you for your interest and excitement! This year s theme is Family Favorites. The Texas 4-H Healthy Lifestyle Ambassadors, as well as the state food show committee, has assisted in selecting this theme. We believe it will be one that is fun and educational. The 4-H Food Show packet was not released prior to printing of this newsletter but is expected to be released September 1, 2016 and will contain resources to assist in teaching to the theme. In addition, the rules and guidelines will be in this packet for all seniors participating at the state level. Family Favorites can be any dish that families enjoy made in a more healthy way. The theme could also be used to teach the importance of family meal times. Some 4-H members might consider their family heritage and focus on a dish that represents this. Obviously, there are many ways to have fun and creative with this theme! If you would like to join in planning this year s county 4-H Food Show and other FCS projects, there will be a planning meeting on Thursday, September 1st at 6 pm at The County Extension Office. Everyone is invited to attend! Make sure to bring donations of school essentials for One Day 4-H Community Service Project!!! 6

It was our hope that we would be able to work with our poultry industry partners to once again supply both turkey tom and hen poults for the shows. Unfortunately, we were not able to secure a source of turkey toms. The turkey industry continues to attempt to replenish flock numbers lost during the avian influenza outbreak in the spring of As a result, there continues to be a shortage of turkey tom availability. We apologize for any inconvenience or hardship this situation will cause to exhibitors and the show managers. We continue to work diligently on behalf of the youth of Texas to provide birds for the livestock shows in Texas, and we are grateful to our industry partners for agreeing to supply hen poults for the 2017 shows. Without their help, we would not be able to supply turkey poults at all. Turkey pick-up is planned for the first week of November, The exact day and time will be announced as soon as we are able to work out delivery details from the turkey supplier. 20
