There is lots of information in this newsletter with regards to Stock Shows and dates. Please take the time to look at the dates so that you do not miss something that is important to you. 2 PAGE 2 4-H POINSETTIA SALE AND FRESH CHRISTMAS WREATHS will be sold on Friday, December 4 th at Marrou and Company in Gonzales. You may also pre-order wreaths this year if you wish. 4-H ers may pre-sell poinsettia and wreaths until Friday, November 20 th. All orders are DUE NO LATER THAN 4:00 P.M. ON NOVEMBER 20 th. Poinsettia orders are not guarantee if orders are not in by November 20th. We need all 4-H ers to help sell poinsettias as all 4-H ers benefit from the proceeds. Prizes to 4-H ers in the county who sell the most are: 1 st place-$ nd place-$ rd place-$20.00 Pick up poinsettias and wreaths at Marrou s between 10:00am and 4:00pm. Sale also opens to the public during those hours. At least 2 adult volunteers from each club are asked to help on Friday, December 4 th 10:00-Noon Sundowners, Nixon & Waelder Noon-2:00 Rising Star, & Smiley 2:00-4:00 Leesville & Cost County Council News By: Haley Clampit, President HOWDY! This is our last month to bring in canned goods for GCAM! Has your club met the challenge given by the county council to collect 50 cans or more of corn and 50 cans or more of green beans? By your November meeting, your goal is to have 100 cans or more! Next month, results will be posted. A very special thank you for all who contributed and/or assembled the packages for the first responders in Gonzales County. Everyone was very thankful! 3 PAGE 3 RESOURCES Clover Kids The 4-H program serves youth from 3rd grade (minimum age 8) through 12th grade (minimum age 18). As an affiliated group, youth enrolled as 4-H Clover Kids have activities and programs suitable for their age group. Clover Kids are not eligible to participate in activities, recognition programs and competitive events reserved for older youth. Competitive events and competitive judging are inappropriate for Clover Kids. Clover Kids may have animal projects; however, it is recommended animal projects should not exceed a rabbit in size. Most standard 4-H accident insurance normally is not available for youth under 5 years of age. Gonzales County 4-H owns a liquid nitrogen tank to store bull semen for any 4-H member to use for their beef projects. This tank is available for check-out at the AgriLife Extension Office Rural Youth Loans the Farm Service Agency has a program that provides loans to youth for purchasing income producing livestock to improve and/or begin their operation. Information on this program is available at the Gonzales FSA Office, Take Pictures-and tell us what is going on at your club meetings or other 4-H activities. Let s promote 4-H in our community and show Gonzales what 4-H is all about. Send your pictures and stories to gonzales@ag.tamu.edu EVENTS You can stay up to date on events with the Nixon-Smiley Stock Show by following their Facebook page Nixon-Smiley Livestock Show Smiley-Livestock-Show/ Congratulations to the Gonzales County 4-H Junior Livestock Judging Team members who recently won third place overall out of 22 teams at Hill Country Livestock Judging Contest in Mason. Team members included Logan Dement, Faith Lester, Brendon Mercer, and Savay Sexton. Individually, Savay Sexton was 4 th over all, and 1 st in Swine. Faith Lester was 10 th overall, and 7 th in cattle. 4 PAGE 4 GONZALES LIVESTOCK SHOW SWINE AND BREEDING ANIMAL VALIDATIONS: According to Gonzales Livestock Show Rules, entries in the Market Hog and Breeding Gilt will validate on WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 2 nd from 5:00-6:00 p.m. at the JB WELLS PARK. IMPORTANT: If you cannot make validation, you must make arrangements with a show board member to have your animals validated prior to December 2 nd. If this is not done, you will not be allowed to show. GONZALES COMMERCIAL HEIFERS VALIDATION: Commercial heifer validation for the Gonzales Show will be on Dec 6 th & 13 th 1:00-2:00 p.m. at Guadalupe Valley Vet Clinic GONZALES LIVESTOCK SHOW Heads up on the rules for the 2016 Gonzales Livestock Show, all exhibitors must be a FFA or 4-H member in Gonzales County by November 1, Quality Counts Training for 2016 Gonzales and Major Livestock Show Exhibitors Training for the Quality Counts verification can be done online at Once you arrive at this site, you can go to the Texas Trails icon to take the training. Then click on the verification icon to take the test. ALL Gonzales County Youth Show (Animals and Bake Show) exhibitors must obtain a Quality Counts certification number by Dec 31, Gonzales Livestock Show Bake Rules have not been released yet. Once released the Extension office will send out a mass e- mail. MAJOR SHOW EXHIBITORS: Fort Worth, Houston, Austin and San Angelo, and San Antonio exhibitors entry cards are available in the office. If you plan to enter any of these shows, contact Dwight at the Extension Office. Fort Worth entries are due Nov 6 th. All other Show s entry cards need to be completed and paid by Friday November 13 th. GONZALES STOCK SHOW BROILERS must be ordered by December 11 th. Will arrive January 20, 2016, call the Extension office to order your broilers. CALF SCRAMBLES Anyone wishing to participate in the calf scramble contest at any of the major livestock shows (Fort Worth, San Antonio, Houston, Austin, and Waco) should contact the Extension Office to obtain information to register for the calf scramble competitions. Each show has a different registration deadline and registration procedure, so you need to call promptly. If you successfully catch a calf in these scrambles you will be awarded a $500-$1750 certificate to purchase a heifer or possibly other animal projects as well as being eligible for additional scholarships. LIVESTOCK PROJECTS 4-H members who want assistance in selecting their 4-H livestock projects or would like further advice on managing their projects, are encouraged to communicate with their club managers, and are also welcome to seek assistance from your county agent, Dwight Sexton. Mr. Sexton is available to make project visits and provide advice on your projects. 4

5 PAGE 5 4-H Shooting Sport Muzzleloading Coach Training and 4-H Outdoor Education Coaching Training November 21-22, 2015 at the State 4-H Center in Brownwood Register on 4-H Connect through November 11, 2015 Texas 4-H Photography Contest and Texas 4-H/FFA Photography Contest The Texas 4-H Youth Development Program is excited to release two photography contests for the H Year. These contests are: 2016 Texas 4-H Photography Contest Theme: For the theme is 4-H, Ribbons, Awards and Recognition. This year the theme will focus still life arrangements of 4-H awards, ribbons and recognition. The arrangement and positioning of items will be strongly evaluated as well as the quality of the photo. Photo should create emotion and have impact! Changes to rules for A statement related to the fact that all photos must be the original work of the 4-H member submitting the photograph. No photograph can be submitted which has been taken by other 4-H members, a family member, or any printed/digital source. All photos will be scanned through a reverse image search. Entry Period: April 1, 2016 to April 15, 2016 through 4-H CONNECT Texas State Preservation Board 4-H and FFA Photography Contest The Texas State Preservation Board in partnership with the Texas 4-H Youth Development Program is pleased to present an annual photography contest for members of the Texas 4-H and FFA Programs. This photography contest allows 4-H and FFA members to showcase Texas Agriculture through photos. A select number of the photographs will be displayed in the Texas State Capitol Agriculture Museum starting in early Selected photographs will feature a place card with the photographer s name, city, and age. Photos will remain on display for one year in the Agriculture Museum. Let us help fill the shelves at GCAM. All cans need to be delivered to the office or GCAM by Monday, November 16. Be sure each club keeps an accurate count of cans collected as reports will be given per club. 4-H members are all invited to the County Council Meeting at the Extension Office, at 6:30 p.m. 7

11 PAGE Texas 4-H Roundup Share-The-Fun contest!! 1. Share-The-Fun will be split over two days at Texas 4-H Roundup! a. Wednesday: Choreographed Routines, Dramedy, Poetry/Prose, and Vocal b. Thursday: Celebrate 4-H, Musical/Instrumental, and Solo/Band Performance 2. NEW! 4-H members will be able to participate in one Share-The-Fun category on Wednesday AND one Share-The-Fun category on Thursday! 3. NEW! A Best of Show will be selected each evening by audience participation through texting in votes. 4. A total of 7 categories will be offered for the 2016 contest. 5. Don t forget! This will be the third year for the additional acting category called Dramedy. 6. The first and second place district winners in each of the seven (7) categories qualify for Texas 4-H Roundup. 7. The first and second place entries in each category from District advancing to Texas 4-H Roundup may be from the same county. If a county has an entry in each category at District and each wins first or second, then they can all advance to Texas 4-H Roundup. 8. Please note the Texas 4-H Roundup rule that went into effect in 2013: 4-H members MAY enter the same category in which they have previously been part of a first place entry at Texas 4-H Roundup. 9. There will be an Orientation on Tuesday, June 7, 2016 at 4:00 pm for Choreographed Routines, Dramedy, Poetry/Prose, and Vocal. There will be an Orientation on Wednesday, June 8, 2016 at 4:00 pm for Celebrate 4-H, Musical/Instrumental, and Solo/Band Performance. 10. There will be an Awards Assembly on Wednesday, June 8, 2016 at 2:00 pm for Choreographed Routines, Dramedy, Poetry/Prose, and Vocal. There will be an Awards Assembly on Thursday, June 9, 2016 at 2:00 pm for Celebrate 4-H, Musical/Instrumental, and Solo/Band Performance. More information for teams qualifying for Texas 4-H Roundup will be sent to those counties in the spring.
