The election of County Council officers will take place be sure to have your club delegates from your club here on May the 17 th at 6:30 pm to vote. Make note that nominations for Friend of 4-H, Outstanding Leader and Outstanding members awards are made at this time. Club managers may also change after this meeting. Wishing all moms a wonderful Mother s Day! Remember: 4-H is year-round! There are always great summer opportunities for 4-H members, and we can t forget those 4-H Record books!! Club managers should send a list of their new club officers and project leaders to the Extension Office ASAP as well as the nominations and awards for each club. You are encouraged to run for an office in the club you attend. Becoming an officer will help develop Leadership skills, speaking skills and parliamentary skills, which can be used for your entire life. Page 1 of 15

2 County Council News By: Haley Clampit, President Howdy! Interested in attending camp this summer? Be sure to look into the summer camp opportunities provided by the Texas 4-H Center. Financial assistance is available for camps. Be sure to read about all those details in the newsletter. Congratulations to those who participated in District Round-Up and other contests this past month! 4-H County Council and Adult Leaders Meetings will be at the County Extension Office on May 17, 2016 at 6:30 P.M. All Gonzales County 4-H club members are encouraged to come. All Gonzales County club delegates will vote for next year s County Council members. We look forward to seeing Cost, Leesville, Nixon, Rising Star, Smiley, Sundowners and Waelder Club members that evening. President: Haley Clampit V-President: Kristopher Knesek Secretary: Sadie Thibodeaux Treasurer: Savay Sexton Parliamentarian: Kathleen Knesek Reporter: Braden Clampit District Council Reps: Haley Clampit, Kristopher Knesek, Kathleen Knesek, and Sadie Thibodeaux District 4-H Council Officer Election The election of officers for the District 10-4-H Council will take place at the Texas 4-H Center in Brownwood, during Leadership Lab, June 22-24, To be eligible for an office, 4-Hers must have attended District Leadership Lab at least one year prior to running for office. Page 2 of 15 Qualified delegates interested in seeking Council must apply by completing the application on the District 10 Website starting May 2, 2016 and submitting no later than May 31, Applications can be found at h.tamu.edu/district-4-h-council/ SAVE THE DATE: 4-H BANQUET Thursday, July 28, First United Methodist Church. Bring your favorite side dish. RESOURCES Clover Kids The 4-H program serves youth from 3rd grade (minimum age 8) through 12th grade (minimum age 18). As an affiliated group, youth enrolled as 4-H Clover Kids have activities and programs suitable for their age group. Clover Kids are not eligible to participate in activities, recognition programs and competitive events reserved for older youth. Competitive events and competitive judging are inappropriate for Clover Kids. Clover Kids may have animal projects; however, it is recommended animal projects should not exceed a rabbit in size. Most standard 4-H accident insurance normally is not available for youth under 5 years of age. Gonzales County 4-H owns a liquid nitrogen tank to store bull semen for any 4-H member to use for their beef projects. This tank is available for check-out at the AgriLife Extension Office

3 Rural Youth Loans the Farm Service Agency has a program that provides loans to youth for purchasing income producing livestock to improve and/or begin their operation. Information on this program is available at the Gonzales FSA Office, Take Pictures-and tell us what is going on at your club meetings or other 4-H activities. Let s promote 4-H in our community and show Gonzales what 4-H is all about. Send your pictures and stories to gonzales@ag.tamu.edu EVENTS You can stay up to date on events with the Nixon-Smiley Stock Show by following their Facebook page Nixon-Smiley Livestock Show n-smiley-livestock-show/ LIVESTOCK PROJECTS 4-H members who want assistance in selecting their 4-H livestock projects or would like further advice on managing their projects, are encouraged to communicate with their club managers, and are also welcome to seek assistance from your county agent, Dwight Sexton. Mr. Sexton is available to make project visits and provide advice on your projects. Here is a helpful website for 4-H members interested in showing livestock: Gonzales Livestock Show Buyer s List Don t forget to pick up your buyers list at the Extension office and get your thank you notes written. Checks will be handed out at the annual Livestock Show. Take your stamped thank you notes to the Extension Office or with you to the meeting. Annual Meeting / Hot Dog Dinner Date: May 9 th Time: 6 pm Place: JB Wells Show Barn Major Show Turkeys If you are interested in showing turkeys at the major livestock shows next year please contact the Extension Office to place your order by June 1, Texas A&M Livestock Project Camps Including, Lamb & Goat Camp, Livestock Judging Camp, Horse Judging Camp, Show cattle Camp. Registration is online at uth-workshops/ Texas 4-H Roundup Rules and Guidelines Texas - 4-H Roundup will be held in College Station, Texas on campus of Texas A&M University from June 6 th to June 9 th. More information is available at h.tamu.edu/?s=texas+roundup 2016 District 10 4-H Horse Show will be held June 14-15, 2016 at the Uvalde County Fairplex. Registration is on 4-H Connect from May 2 May 20, 2016 All participants must have completed the 4-H horse validation process on 4-H connect by May 1, Page 3 of 15

4 Texas 4-H Horse Project Leader Training June 3 rd & 4 th, 2016 in Belton Discussed will be the nuts and bolts of how to run an effective 4-H horse program, along with hands-on sessions about teaching safe and fun horsemanship lessons to youth. Hippology is the Study of Horses. The Hippology contest is an outdoor activity where 4-H members can make learning fun by exhibiting their horse knowledge (without having to own a horse). More information is available at the Extension Office. Blinn College Livestock Judging Camp Experienced, Ages 14 & up / July Novice, Ages 8-13 / July Cost: $250 Entry Deadline: July 01, 2016 Applications are available at the Extension Office. Club NEWS 4-H Outdoor Challenge- June at the Seguin Outdoor Learning Center Register on 4-H Connect May 1-29 Events in this contest include: Shotgun Rifle Archery Fishing Climbing Kayaking Outdoor Skills Biologist Skills Gear Judging Outdoor safety Further information is available at the Extension Office. Invitational 4-H Hippology Contest Date: May 21, 2016 Location: Fayette County Fairgrounds The contest consists of Judging, Slide Show Test, Written Exam, ID Station, and Team problem. 5 MOTHER S DAY PLANT SALE Will be held on May 06, 2016 at Ara Pecans from 10:00 until 3:00 or SOLD OUT! Please spread the word about the Plant Sale! There will be many types and varieties of flowers and plants. Let s make this a record breaking sale! Volunteer Leader Schedule TIME: 9:00-11:00 CLUBS: Cost, Smiley and Sundowners TIME: 11:00-1:00 CLUBS: Rising Star and Leesville TIME: 1:00-3:00 CLUBS: Nixon and Waelder Time slots are set up to guarantee that someone will be there. 6 Something NEW! Adult Leaders are available to provide limited financial aid for members who have attended workshops, camps, or clinics that enhances his/her 4-H project. Financial aid is also available for those who have represented Gonzales County at the district, state, or national levels in other events. Financial aid can include travel expenses. Members must submit paperwork and provide receipt of camp/retreat attended within 45 days of the event attended. Members will be notified once paperwork has been reviewed. Contact Natalie Knesek or Melissa Clampit for more information. Paperwork can be picked up at the office or found online at gonzales.agrilife.org under the financial assistance header. 4-H RECORDBOOK INFORMATION Recordbooks are due JUNE 16, 2016 to the Extension Office. 4-H members are encouraged to complete a recordbook. If a 4-Her turns in a recordbook that is not complete according to the Texas 4-H Recordbook Guidelines he/she will be contacted by the Extension Office. Members will be asked to correct any part of the recordbook that is not complete and return it to the office. Recordbooks must be completed correctly to receive recognition at the annual awards banquet and to be eligible for other awards. Different age categories in which recordbooks compete: Junior, (3rd grade 5 grade) Intermediate (6-8 grades), and Senior (9-12 grades). Recordbook information is available at: h.tamu.edu/youth_recordbooks Page 6 of 15 Gonzales County Awards Information: Listed below are all the awards that are available through the Gonzales County 4- H. Applications may be picked up at the office and are due back by June 3, GOLD STAR: This is the highest award a member can obtain. The winner will be selected from the following items: A completed record book submitted An application form due when record book is turned in An interview Gold Star-The member must be at least 15 at the time of application and must have completed at least 3 years in 4-H, including the current year. To be considered you must apply. JR. MISS AND MR: This is the highest county awards for 12 & 13 year olds. The winner will be selected from the following items: A completed record book submitted An application due when record book is turned in An interview To be considered you must apply. I Dare You Award: William H. Danforth s book, I Dare You, was first published in It is still considered one of the most influential books in the area of personal motivation. The book is published and distributed by the American Youth Foundation through its I Dare You committee. The I Dare You Leadership Award is not a contest or competition. High school principals and county agents are

7 asked to select (or have a staff or committee select) nominees. The award recognizes excellence in character, wellbalanced personal development, and potential for leadership. (Grades 9-12) FRIEND OF 4-H (May 12, 2016) (Nominations due to Extension Office by May 12) This award is for an individual, business or organization that has shown exceptional support to the county/club 4-H program. Each club will be able to recognize one friend. The 4-H Council will then vote on the person or business nominated by the 4- H clubs. The person or business can only receive an award once every three years. ONE member being recognized regardless of age, now it can be one from the junior level, intermediate level and senior level. Some clubs require record books. Club Member of the Year (outgoing, officer, leader, etc) REMEMBERED AND NEVER FORGOTTEN We honor all those who have died in active military service protecting our Nation and Freedoms and we are humbled by their ultimate sacrifice. This year instead of just Each club will determine who will get the awards. The winners will be kept a secret until the 4-H Banquet. Managers will handle this process. OUTSTANDING LEADER: This is to recognize one leader from each club for dedication, effort and support to their 4-H club. Each club will select only one leader as outstanding leader. The leaders will be announced at the 4-H Banquet. We are forever grateful to all who serve in the US military and their families. God Bless! Page 7 of 15
