Get your team together and join in the fun! All current KLH 4-H members are eligible to participate. The only rule is that you must have one novice or junior 4-H member on each team. So, if you have participated before, chat up your friends and get them out to participate or just come out and cheer everyone on! Win or lose, there are always refreshments and lots of laughs and social entertainment!!! Check out the details below and get your team registered before it s too late!! 2 Kawartha Lakes Haliburton Field and Crop 4-H Club Meeting #1 April 27th 2016 Held at Ross Chamber s House Number of members 15 Today in the Field and Crop club we assigned our officers for the duration of the club in Karlee Webster as president, Cody as vice president, April Jeanne Hickson as secretary. Nathan Jetten as press reporter. We guessed seed names and then learned about each crop. We also learned about different diseases and how they affect common types of field crops such as soy beans, oats and corn. We then chose our project crop for the year. At the end of the meeting we had snacks, refreshments and everyone was handed their seeds to be planted. Meeting #2 May 25th 2016 Held at Nathan Jetten s House Number of members 15 Currently in the Field and Crop club we are discussing ideas for our display board which we will enter into different local fairs and the 4-H achievement day. Today we learned what qualities make an ideal corn, soy bean and oats crop. After the combine separates the fruit from the plant the seeds are judged and given a return profit based on the qualities that we discussed. If the harvested crop has impurities in it or some of the seeds are rotten then the profit for that harvest will be decreased. Next we learned and talked about different types of weeds that are common in crop fields. Everyone was assigned weeds to look up the in different weed books that were handed out during the meeting. Afterwords we discussed our field trip to the Antique Power Show being held at the Lindsay Fair Grounds on Saturday June 18. We will be looking at the different types of equipment that was used to plant and harvest field crops many years ago. At the end of the meeting we had snacks and refreshments. 3 Dress Code for Livestock Shows Policy: Kawartha Lakes Haliburton 4-H members showing livestock must adhere to the below list of acceptable attire for the various types of livestock. When a show dictates or provides different attire it is acceptable for members to wear the attire provided. Dairy: White pants (dress pants or jeans only, no tights, yoga pants or stretch pants), white shirts with a collar and sleeves and no advertising, writing or pictures, adequate footwear Beef: Black pants (dress pants or jeans only, no tights, yoga pants or stretch pants), white shirt with a collar and sleeves and no advertising, writing or pictures, adequate footwear. Lamb: Black pants (dress pants or jeans only, no tights, yoga pants or stretch pants), white shirt with a collar and sleeves and, and no advertising, writing or pictures adequate footwear, Horses: Varies depending on the breed or discipline. Standard attire is dark pants or breeches and a clean shirt with a collar and sleeve and no advertising, writing or pictures. Dairy Goats: White pants (dress pants or jeans only, no tights, yoga pants or stretch pants), white shirts with a collar and sleeves and no advertising, writing or pictures, adequate footwear Meat Goats: Black pants (dress pants or jeans only, no tights, yoga pants or stretch pants), white shirt with a collar and sleeves, and no advertising, writing or pictures equate footwear. Swine: Dark pants (dress pants and jeans only, no tights, yoga pants or stretch pants), white shirts with a collar and sleeves and no advertising, writing or pictures, adequate footwear. Rabbits: White pants (dress pants or jeans only, no tights, yoga pants or stretch pants), white shirts with a collar and sleeves and no advertising, writing or pictures or white lab coat. Poultry: Black pants (dress pants or jeans only, no tights, yoga pants or stretch pants), white shirts with a collar and sleeves and no advertising, writing or pictures or white lab coat. Note: Poultry has been changed to black pants instead of white pants. It is the member s responsibility to ensure they comply with the above listed guidelines and that all attire is kept as clean and neat as possible. 4 4-H Ontario Outstanding New Leader Award Nominations are due July 15, 2016! Sponsored by: Gay Lea Foods Co-operative Limited, these awards recognize volunteers who are new to 4-H (less than 3 years), and doing great things for youth members in their clubs. Only one nomination will be accepted per Association, with one award given out per region. Recipients receive a custom designed award. For more details, visit hontario.ca/volunteers. Download and complete the 2016 Nomination Form Youth Opportunities & Scholarships Giles Hume 4-H Ontario Centennial Award Submission Deadline: July 31, 2016 Recognizing leadership and dedication to community betterment, and established in the summer of 2015 in honour of the 100 year anniversary of 4-H in Ontario, this award of $2,000 will be granted to a recipient to assist with their post-secondary education as recognition of excellence in 4-H and their home community. Click here for more details: Bertram and Hazel Stewart 4-H Dairy Youth Education Award & Bursary Deadline: September 30, 2016 The Bertram and Hazel Stewart 4-H Dairy Youth Education Award & Bursary honours Bertram and the late Hazel Stewart s deep commitment and passion toward agriculture, education and 4-H. Open to 4-H Ontario members who have been a Dairy Club member for at least three years. At application, prospective winners must be enrolled in grade 9, 10 or 11, with intent to pursue post-secondary education. Presented at the TD Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic Show at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in the year it is granted, this bursary of $1,000 is payable upon successful completion of first year of post-secondary schooling.
