I met a new friend named Landen. My favorite thing was toilet brush hockey. We used toilet brushes for sticks and a foam ball for a puck. Next was tug of war, our team won the whole thing! And last but not least lunch! We had pizza, ice tea and fruit. I also learned how to do great judging. We judged corn. The facilitators let us me make a t-shirt as well as a Chia pet to take home. The camp was in Millbrook at a hockey arena on May 25 th I joined discovery days kids because I knew it would be so much fun. I would recommend it to anybody who asks me. John Brown: From Monday Aug I had the privilege of attending YAC with 79 other 4-hr s from across Ontario. YAC was held at the Youth Leadership Camps Canada on Pigeon Lake near Ennismore. I was surprised to be the only person from KLH, but I made many new friends throughout the week and especially during the team building games. Some of the games included stacking dice, escaping from a volcano, and lifting people through the spider web at the low ropes. These games helped improve things such as communication, problem solving and leadership skills. The facilitators at camp were amazing and enthusiastic! The facilitator s names were Brianna, Brendon, Annika, Justin, Alissa, Luke, Jessie, Matt, Megan and Marianne. Lastly I would definitely recommend that anyone who wants to have fun with other 4-hr s from across the province should consider going to YAC next year. I know I ll be there! April Jean Hickson: This year career mania was held at the University of Guelph. From Monday July 22 to Friday July 26 this camp was held at the University of Guelph. This experience was great! We got to experience some of what it would be like to live on campus, and we learned all about getting a
5 job. We all stayed on campus in east residence, and ate all of our meals in the food court, like we would if we lived there. We also used one of the classrooms for the week. We had a tour of the campus, which included the crop sciences building and the college of veterinary sciences. On Thursday we got to really know the campus with an amazing race style activity that took us all over the campus. Even for people not interested in Guelph University we had a tour of Conestoga College as well. We also spent time in the classroom. We had many different speakers come in and talk to us about the different stages of getting a job. Our first talk was about the right job for you based on your personality, then we talked about resumes, cover letters, job searching, social networking, interviews and public speaking. On Thursday night we even had a fancy dinner to prepare us in case we had to attend an interview, or meeting over a meal. We didn't spend all our time in the class working though. We also had time every night to do team building activities. These let us work with different people and try different things. Some had you frustrated by not seeing the whole picture or got you out of your comfort zone, but all were really fun. The best part about the camp though may have been the people. We had a small group, but we all got to know each other. Everyone was really friendly, and we had many good laughs! I thoroughly enjoyed myself and would recommend it to anyone ages 14 to 18. It is a great way to meet new people and learn about steps to your next job, or your future career! Allison Brown: Hello, I m Allison Brown. I am 16 years old and I had the privilege of attending Provincial 4-H Leadership Camp this past march break. My parents had both been to leadership camp when they were my age and they loved it! My mom told me that I should go and she promised that I would have a lot of fun. She was right! I remember being dropped off on the first day and all of the facilitators were all standing around the registration table and they were dressed up in the funniest and weirdest costumes. They were very silly and fun and from that moment I knew I was going to have a great week. At the beginning of camp we made our goals, the top 3 things that we wanted to learn and get out of this camp. Most people chose to become better at communicating (like public speaking), how to take constructive criticism, and to learn to take risks. Everyone at the camp, aka The Fleet made a mission statement, We the fleet of 2013 Provincial 4-H Leadership Camp will create a positive experience to develop our leadership skills using enthusiastic participation. We will make new friends and gain self-confidence while encouraging others to take risks and have fun! I defiantly think that we lived up to that statement. This camp was so great because everyone was included in the activities no matter if they were shy, disabled, injured, from a different race or spoke a different language. I think having the variety of people really made the camp better! We experienced a lot of great activities at camp. We participated in a lot of leadership training but the training felt a lot like games, it was a ton of fun. We also broke into two groups and prepared our own I Have a Dream speech to say in front of the group. At first a lot of people were nervous to do a speech, but once we got started it was really fun. That activity really boosted my confidence and made me a more confident speaker. One of my favourite activities was the NASA challenge that we had each night. Everyone at the camp was part of 4 starships, and each starship would race to be the first to issue a challenge to all the other starships, even the facilitators. And then the starships would accept the challenge and try to compete to win the challenge. The challenge could be whatever you wanted it to be. It was almost like a group talent show. I loved the NASA challenges. We did so many great activities throughout the week and they all transformed us to be better leaders. I had an amazing time at camp and I learned so much from it, gained some great friend, and learned some valuable lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life. I would encourage everyone to go to this fun filled camp if the get the chance. I wish I could go back and do it all again. To be part of these and other exciting 4-H opportunities check out
