2 Quiz Bowls: Changes in Categories: Auxiliary Aids or Special Accommodations: Concession Stand: A new rule was implemented last year that will allow some Senior 4-H members the chance to return to participate again in events at Texas 4-H Roundup where they previously placed first. See the Texas 4-H Roundup Guide for more details. Another new rule allows youth to participate in multiple categories per day at Texas 4-H Roundup. District 8 will allow this for Seniors only. See specific D8 Roundup Rules & Guidelines for more info. If you have any participants requiring auxiliary aids or special accommodations, please let us know at the time entry materials are due. Bosque County 4-H will be offering a concession stand this year. They are currently planning to sell sausage wraps for breakfast and lunch, as well as pulled pork sandwiches, chips, and drinks for an additional lunch option. Cookies and brownies will also be available. We encourage you to support their concession stand!! A flyer and price list will be coming soon! Page 7 of 15

4 DISTRICT 8 4-H ROUNDUP General Rules & Guidelines 1. Rules and Guidelines All District contests will be conducted by the rules printed in the District 8 General Rules and Guidelines and in the 2015 Texas 4-H Roundup Guide. If an inconsistency exists, the Texas 4-H Roundup Guide rules will always supersede District policies, rules, and guidelines. All contests listed in the Texas 4-H Roundup Guide will be included in District Contest provided there are sufficient entries. 2. Membership Participants must be a bona fide 4-H member, currently enrolled in their respective county program. 3. Age Divisions There will be three (3) age divisions (Junior, Intermediate, and Senior) in all contests, except those listed below where there will be two (2) age divisions (Junior and Senior). The Food Show will be for the Senior age division only. District 8 Contests with two (2) age divisions: Food Challenge Dairy Judging Leaders 4 Life Skillathon Quiz Bowls (Beef, Horse, and Nutrition) A 4-H member s 4-H age is determined by his or her age on August 31, 2014 and is as follows: Division Ages Birth date between: Junior 8 years old and in 3rd grade or 9-10 years Sept 1, 2003 Aug 31, 2006 Intermediate years of age Sept 1, 2000 Aug 31, 2003 Senior years of age Sept 1, 1995 Aug 31, 2000 Only Senior aged members may advance to the state qualifying competition at Texas 4-H Roundup. 4. Participation/Entries 4-H members must be certified by the County Extension Agent to participate at any District 4-H event. Each county may enter the following number of entries at District 8 Contests: Judging Contests 3 teams per county per age division Educational Presentations 3 entries per county per age division Public Speaking 3 entries per county per age division Quiz Bowls 3 entries per county per age division Share-The-Fun 2 entries per county per age division per category Rifle 3 entries per county per age division Food Show 1 entry per county per age division per category (Seniors only) Food Challenge 2 entries per county per age division Fashion Show 1 entry per county per age division per category Fashion Storyboard No limit Leaders 4 Life Skillathon No limit All team members must be from the same county and within the same age division. Exception: in team events, Juniors may move up and participate in the Intermediate category with an Intermediate team. Intermediates may not move down to the Junior division. Juniors or Intermediates may not participate in the Senior division. Page 9 of 15

Multiple Entries at District Roundup Juniors and Intermediates At District 8 4-H Roundup, Juniors and Intermediates may multiple events as follows: Educational Presentation AND Quiz Bowl OR Share-The-Fun AND Quiz Bowl Participants may NOT enter and Educational Presentation and Share-The-Fun. Seniors At District 8 4-H Roundup, Senior 4-H members may enter a maximum of one contest from each of the four columns below. See the Share-The-Fun guidelines for more details at the following link: Procedure for participating in multiple District Roundup Events 4-H members that are participating in Quiz Bowl and another event (Educational Presentations/Public Speaking/Share-The-Fun) need to compete in the other event first, and then immediately report to the Quiz Bowl contest location in time for the contest to begin. If a 4-H member does not return to the Quiz Bowl area immediately, he/she may forfeit his/her eligibility to participate in the Quiz Bowl round. Seniors Qualifying for more than one Texas 4-H Roundup event held at the same time Senior age members who qualify for state in contest areas that conflict at Texas 4-H Roundup must choose the contest in which they will advance. Members qualifying for advancement in more than one category will need to report to the district hub prior to leaving the contest to designate the category in which they will advance. Members who do not report their decision to the district hub by the conclusion of District Roundup will have the first reported contest declared as the contest in which they will advance, and the state opportunity in the other contest will be offered to the next qualified placing participant. Substitutions for Districts 4-H Contests Each county should determine their own guidelines to follow in their County 4-H Roundup regarding substitutions when they advance to District Roundup. Senior Substitutions for Texas 4-H Roundup District 8 will follow the substitution rules as outlined in the current year s Texas 4-H Roundup Guide. To be an eligible substitute, he/she must have attended and competed in another competitive District 8 4-H event. Page 10 of 15

Senior Contest Categories with Single Entries Senior aged 4-H members in the following contest categories have the option to participate at District 8 4- H Roundup if they are the only entry at the District level. These contestants are still highly encouraged to attend and compete at District 8 4-H Roundup to improve their skills and to gain feedback from judges. The contests eligible are as follows: Educational Presentations, Public Speaking, Share-The-Fun, Beef Quiz Bowl, and Horse Quiz Bowl. If the single entry does not attend District 8 4-H Roundup, the County Extension Agent MUST witness and certify the entry after the District 8 4-H Roundup entry deadline. The County Extension Agent must notify the District Office by the Texas 4-H Roundup registration deadline. 7. Academic Eligibility of Participants According to the Texas Education Code, a 4-H member must be deemed eligible to compete in an event that takes place on a weekday or weekend. All 4-H youth, including youth in public, private, and/or home school must adhere to the following guidelines regarding extracurricular activities and academic eligibility: Complete a Declaration of Eligibility Form (available at: OR Name of 4-H member must appear on a list of eligible students to participate in a specific extracurricular activity signed by the school principal or designee. If a 4-H member is ineligible for a 4-H competitive event, the agent must notify the 4-H member, his/her parents, and the district office, by letter, of this situation. If the parent has any questions, he/she should be referred to the school administrator. 8. Entry Forms All contest entries must be submitted on the designated attachments and are due in the District Office no later than the indicated dates. Please type the entry form and check for correct spelling of names and correct birth dates. 9. Entry Fee There is no entry fee for Educational Presentations, Public Speaking, Beef Quiz Bowl, Horse Quiz Bowl, Share-The-Fun. All entries must be submitted to the District Office by the County Extension Agent by the District entry due date. 10. Late Fees Late entries will be permitted with an additional $20 late fee per 4-H member up to 48 hours after the regular contest deadline. No additional entries will be accepted after the late entry deadline. This applies to all contests including those without regular entry fees. 11. Share-The-Fun Support Share-The-Fun participants are expected to provide all equipment and props needed to conduct their presentation. This includes CD players/radios, extension cords, speakers, amplifiers, etc. If possible, an electric piano/keyboard will be provided. An announcement will be made prior to District Roundup if one will be available. Page 11 of 15

7 12. Subject Matter The skills and knowledge used in any 4-H contest should be a result of experiences in a project in which the member has participated. A presentation should be related to the contest entered and should contain current information. It should be appropriate for the member s age and experience. Appropriate credit should be given for references used. 13. Time Limits Educational Presentations: Contestants are permitted twelve (12) minutes for Educational Presentations. An additional nine (9) minutes will be allowed for set up and take down. A penalty of two (2) points per minute or partial minute overtime will be deducted from the final score. Adults are permitted to assist the 4-H member with the on-stage arrangement and cleanup in connection with the presentation. Public Speaking: a five to seven (5-7) minute talk suitable as a platform speech or radio broadcast. Share-The-Fun: a six (6) minute presentation with four (4) minutes total for set up and take down. 14. Visuals The use of charts, photographs, computer presentations, graphics/programs, and other visual materials are permitted. Visuals should contribute to the presentation. Each presentation is an example of the participant s ability to communicate an idea. Participants are expected to provide visuals and materials used. Projection screens, extension cords, computers, and projectors are the responsibility of the 4-H member. 15. Judges Questions on Educational Presentations Judges may ask contestants questions at the end of their presentation. This will be done on the judges time. Only official judges may ask questions of the contestants. Each county is expected to submit the names of three (3) adult judges by the entry deadline. 16. Scorecards The 4-H Educational Presentation Score Sheet will be used by contest judges in scoring Educational Presentations regardless of presentation style (method demonstration, illustrated talk, or speech). Public Speaking scorecards will be used by contest judges in scoring Public Speaking. Score sheets are available on the District 8 4-H Youth Development website under the Roundup page at h.tamu.edu/project_speaking. Share-The-Fun scorecards (revised Aug 2010) will be used by contest judges in scoring Share-The-Fun acts and can be found at the following link: Auxiliary Aids/Special Accommodations If 4-H members that are participating in District 4-H events require auxiliary aids or special accommodations, please notify the District Office at the same time that entry materials are due. 18. Change of Entry Forms If, after ing the county entry forms, substitutions are necessary, complete a Change of Entry Form by typing or printing for each contest where substitutions should be made and turn these in at the appropriate contest location before the contest begins or send to the District Office prior to the contest. Please fill out blanks that apply. Agents are responsible for completing, signing, and ensuring that substitution forms are submitted. NOTE: NO CHANGES WILL BE TAKEN OVER THE PHONE!! Page 12 of 15

8 DISTRICT 8 4-H ROUNDUP Contest Specific Guidelines, Notes, and Reminders ALL CONTESTS Judges and Superintendents Check-in between 8:00-8:15am. Orientation will begin at 8:15 am. The specific location will be printed in the information sent judges. If the original judges cannot attend to represent your county, County Extension Agents are responsible for substitutes. Opening Assembly An opening General Assembly & Contestant Orientation will be held in the Meridian High School Cafetorium at 9:00 am. Awards/Assembly - No General Awards Assembly will be held. All awards will be presented to "top three placing teams/individuals" in each category in their respective contest rooms. Contest Participation 4-H members that are participating in Quiz Bowl and another event (Educational Presentations/Public Speaking/Share-The-Fun) need to compete in the other event first, and then immediately report to the Quiz Bowl contest location in time for the contest to begin. If a 4-H member does not return to the Quiz Bowl area immediately, he/she may forfeit his/her eligibility to participate in the Quiz Bowl round. BEEF QUIZ BOWL, HORSE QUIZ BOWL, INVITATIONAL SWINE QUIZ BOWL Beef, Horse, and Swine Quiz Bowl Contestants Contestants are to report to their contest location for registration at 10:00am. Contestants should be ready to begin the contest at 10:30am. Advance to State The Senior district team winners (first, second, and third place) in Beef and Horse Quiz Bowl qualify for Texas 4-H Roundup. The Swine Quiz Bowl is an Invitational contest, so youth do not have to qualify to attend Texas 4-H Roundup in this contest. All Intermediate and Senior 4-H members are welcome to participate in the Invitational Swine Quiz Bowl at Texas 4-H Roundup. EDUCATIONAL PRESENTATIONS AND PUBLIC SPEAKING Check-in & Registration Contestants should plan to arrive for the Opening Assembly and Orientation that begins at 9:00 am. Contestants will be dismissed to their contest rooms to check-in with their Room Superintendents following the Assembly. Contestants should be ready to begin the contests at 9:30am. Equipment A table will be available in each educational presentation contest room and the contest superintendent is requested to bring a standing easel. Contestants are responsible for all other needed materials and equipment. If additional materials will be provided, contestants will be notified prior to the contest date. Contest Room - The door to the contest room will only open briefly between presentations. If seating is available after contestants are seated, others are encouraged to watch the contests, but should avoid entering or leaving the contest room during a presentation. Contest Room - The door to the contest room will only open briefly between presentations. If seating is available after contestants are seated, others are encouraged to watch the contests, but should avoid entering or leaving the contest room during a presentation. Contest Resource Information Entries Each county may have two entries in each category and age division. A 4-H member may only participate in one Share-The-Fun category. Presentation Order - There will be no assigned times. Presentations will be back-to-back. Dressing Areas The nearest restrooms will be used as dressing areas. We do not need everyone dressing at one time. At 9:20 am the first act will set up on stage; at 9:30 am they perform, and the second group will be ready to go back stage. Props All props and equipment will be the responsibility of the 4-H member. (This includes CD players/radios, extension cords, speakers, amplifiers, etc. If possible, an electric piano/keyboard will be provided. An announcement will be made prior to District Roundup if one will be available.) No props will be allowed to lean on walls in the hall or on stage. They must be free standing! Advance to State The Senior district winners (first and second place) in each of the seven categories qualify for Texas 4-H Roundup. Page 14 of 15
