5 PAGE 5 CLOTHING AND TEXTILE CONTESTS Do you like fashion and being creative? The 4-H Clothing and Textiles project is perfect for you. In the 4-H Clothing and Textiles Project you can learn to sew, how to be a good consumer when purchasing clothes, and the art of designing clothes and accessories, and careers in the fashion industry. Here are some of the different projects you can participate in. Fashion Show The Fashion Show is designed for 4-H members to showcase their skills in buying and construction. Fashion Storyboard The 4-H Fashion Storyboard is an industry-inspired method of displaying original designs. The storyboard tells the story of the designer s idea. Natural Fiber Contest The Natural Fiber contest is part of the Fashion Show. Members choose to buy or construct an outfit made from either cotton or wool/mohair/alpaca. Duds to Dazzle During Duds to Dazzle, teams of 3 to 5 receive textiles and each team has 60 minutes to create a new product using items from the supply closet. Trashion Show In the Trashion Show, intermediate and senior 4-H members use their design skills to create and exhibit a recycled/reused garment created from items that would otherwise be thrown in the trash. Teams of 3 to 5 members submit a video application in the spring to be judged. Alpaca Wool Challenge 4-H participants of any age can request skeen of yarn provided by Alpaca producers to create a knitted, crocheted, or woven clothing or textile item. Quilt Challenge and Community Service Project This contest has two options for how to participate. Students can create a blanket or quilt of any kind that will be donated to an individual in need or a charity. These items are not judged. Or student can create quilts to be judged. After judging, quilts will be donated to an organization of the quilters choice, Project Linus or Quilts of Valor. For more information on any of these go to or call the Extension office. The County Fashion Show and Fashion Storyboard contest will be March 30 during the County Roundup. The District Fashion Show and Fashion Storyboard contest will be May 5th during the District Roundup. 7 Page 7 THE ANNUAL SAUSAGE DINNER FUNDRAISER WILL BE APRIL 2nd Sausage Dinner tickets are being distributed to all clubs and should be making their way to each 4-H family soon. Proceeds from the Sausage Dinner are split between the local 4-H Clubs and County 4-H Council. We are asking that each family sell/buy at least 10 tickets. The plates consist of generous portions of sausage, parsley potatoes, green beans flavored with bacon and onions and a creamy coleslaw, plates sell for $7.00. What a deal! The top seller from each club, selling a minimum of 25 tickets will win $25.00 cash. Money and/or tickets are due back at your March club meeting. COUNTY COUNCIL MEETING & UPCOMING ELECTIONS The next meeting of the Medina County Council will be Wednesday, February 22nd, 7:00 pm at the Extension office. Please plan on attending. Also, start thinking about running for an office in the County Council. If you have been a president, vice president or council delegate some time in your 4-H career you can run for an office. There are some age criteria for some offices so pick up an application to see these. Applications will be available in the Extension office and deadline to apply will be April 3rd. Officer elections will be held at the last meeting in April. RECORDBOOKS It s time to start keeping records for your Projects. Keeping records is a great way to hold on to your memories about your incredible adventures in 4-H. Record keeping is also a great way to develop skills in time management, communication, setting goals and deadlines, money management and project evaluations. In an effort to update the current recordbook system a committee has developed an online program with a data entry system that easily allows for updates, editing and printing. There will be three (3) levels of recordbooks based on 4-H age (junior, intermediate, and senior). Information requested for each level will progressively add on to each other. The junior & intermediate books are significantly simplified from past recordbooks. The senior level book is similar to the past record book with some minor edits. Parts of the report form will be standardized to allow for ease of completion and judging. Much of the data from previous recordbooks that a member may have saved on their home computer may be cut and pasted into the new form Recordbooks will still be printed and turned in (in hardcopy form) to be judged by the deadline set by your local County Extension Office. This system is available for use at: Watch future newsletters for Recordbook workshops held in Medina County.
