1 Clay County 4-H Guidelines April 2017 A NOTE FROM LAUREN - I have been taking an online short course tled Achieving the Extension Mission Through Volunteers about leading volunteers in Extension. It has been very helpful and I m looking forward to working with the Leader s Associa on and Promo on and Expansion Commi ee in order to put some of the things I ve learned into use! I am excited to create what I hope will be some useful resources and support materials for our county. Learning and leadership are both lifelong skills that you can use in all areas of your life. In addi on, did you know that April is Na onal Volunteer Month? Across the country, Americans who give freely of their me, energy and talents will be honored as part of Na onal Volunteer Month. Without our volunteers, Extension and the 4-H Program would not be where it is today! Please take me this month to let your fellow 4-H volunteers know how much their contribu ons and efforts to Make the Best Be er are appreciated. This year, Na onal 4-H is star ng True Leaders In Service. This annual ini a ve is in honor of Na onal Volunteer Apprecia on Month is a way for all 4-H members to say thank you to their communi es, coun es, and states for all the support they have provided to 4-H. True Leaders in Service, a month-long community service ac va on, officially kicks-off the first day of April, and culminatess with the Na onal 4-H Day of Service on Saturday, April 29. The goal of True Leaders in Service is to encourage 4-H members in every county to make a big impact in our country. We know that you serve your communi es all year long, but we want to highlight these contribu ons throughout the month of April. If you want to register your project, no ma er how big or small, visit: 4-H.org/true-leaders-in-service. 2 4-H LEADER & VOLUNTEER TRAINING SDSU Extension and the State 4-H Office invite 4-H leaders and volunteers to a end the third Quarterly Leader Training April 18, 2017 from 7 to 9 p.m. CST. The training will be held at the Sioux Falls Regional Center in Sioux Falls. No registra on is required. The third quarterly mee ng will provide 4-H leaders and volunteers with an opportunity to learn more about the following: 4-H mission Intro to spring and summer events Release of the State fair book and the adap ons Q & A with 4-H administra on This will be the last training before the busy 4-H summer season starts up. 4-H PROJECT REQUEST - Chesapeake, Virginia Hello, I am a leader with Chesapeake 4-H Livestock Club in Chesapeake, Virginia. Each year, I am in charge of the end of the year slideshow for the kids. This year, I want to do something totally unexpected & surprise all of my co-leaders & the members with something special. I am trying to get a 4-H group from each state to do a very short cell phone video clip that they can to me that says something like "Hey Chesapeake, this is "XXXXXX" 4-H Club from "XXXX, " congrats on another great year! " Of course, they can add to it if they would like, and I hope they each find a way to make it unique to them! The video can say anything they want it to say, along those lines... It can be funny, silly, serious, whatever. I just want to get a group from every State to say something to our group. It can also be more than one Club from the same county/state, I will take as many video clips as I can get! So far, I have received approximately 6 videos. They are all very similar, which is fine, but if your kids are willing to do something that makes the video unique to them, that would be great! (Please note, I ask that when you start the video, pause for a split second before talking, and also leave a second or so at the end. One of the videos I received can not be used, because it is cut so close to the speaking part, they cut themselves off & you can t tell what they are saying.) I need them by May 1, if possible! Thanks for any help you can give me! Lisa Strong Lisa@KefferRealty.com office; direct 335 Centerville Turnpike South Suite F Chesapeake, VA The 2017 State Fair book is on our website! Even be er is that TSC is very pro-4-h. Missy O Connor, Fair Board Manager, has spoken to the store manager and he is excited to get involved in the 4-H program and the community. I don t think the store will be ready for clubs to promote the Spring Paper Clover promo on (April 26-May 7) but you can be thinking about the Fall promo on which is October The store is also willing to help with fundraising. To learn more more about 4-H s partnership with Tractor Supply, including how to win incen ves and year-round fundraising opportuni es, go to

4 NEW IN 2017 All livestock ownership affidavit forms need to be turned into the office 100% complete by the deadline or they will not be accepted! This includes birthdates, ear tags numbers, animal iden fica on, animal names and breeds. This is all important informa on that we input into 4HOnline and FairEntry which allows your animal to go to the County and State Fairs. If the informa on is not correct or missing, it causes a lot of headaches and me spent by staff and commi ee members trying to figure out if an animal is correct or not. Failure to fill out all forms properly may result in the animal not being able to be shown. Market beef, breeding beef, breeding sheep, breeding meat goats, market meat goats, market sheep, market swine, dairy goats, rabbits, poultry, horse and dog affidavits are due June 1. LIVESTOCK JUDGING SCHOOL The Lincoln County 4-H Leaders are hos ng a Livestock Judging School on Friday, July 7, at the 4-H grounds located two miles east of Canton. The applica on (included with this newsle er) will allow 2 members from the four-state area an opportunity to purchase a Columbia ewe lamb from an associa on member with a $250 s pend. The applica on is on the website. RABBIT CLINIC & FUN SHOW A Rabbit Clinic and Fun Show is scheduled for Saturday, May 20 at the 4-H Grounds in Canton. Put the date on your calendar and watch for more details to come. Flyer included with this newsle er.

5 SWINE WEIGH-IN Due to biosecurity reasons, there are no swine weigh-ins for any South Dakota 4-H swine again this year. There will also be no Rate-Of-Gain Contest for swine nor will swine require a classifying event in order to exhibit at State Fair. Since there are no swine weigh-ins, 4-H families will need to contact the Extension Office to arrange to pick up ear tags, tagger, DNA envelopes and the required paperwork to complete. Families will need to do their own tagging and DNA sampling. Once you have the DNA envelopes and paperwork in your hands, you have ONE WEEK to complete this process including completed verificaon forms. NO EXCEP TIONS. Tagging will begin April 12 and must be completed before June 1. SD HORSE COUNCIL TO HOST SPRING CLINIC The South Dakota Horse Council will host a spring clinic Saturday, April 22, at the DeHaan Equestrian Center located in Brookings. Jean Hommel and Kim Fordham-Lien will be presen ng on showmanship, horsemanship, and ranch riding. Students enrolled in South Dakota State University equine courses will also present posters on various topics related to the horse industry. All are welcome to a end the clinic as this will be a day filled with informa on and instruc on that will benefit new and experienced horse show exhibitors alike. This is also con nuing educa on for 4-H horse show judges. Jean Hommel will have the informa on available there for any interested in becoming a cer fied 4-H Horse Show Judge in South Dakota. If an interested person is unable to a end, direct them to me, and I will help get them set up. The clinic will begin at 9 a.m. and will last un l approximately 3 p.m. Cost is $10 for youth 17 and under and $15 for adults 18 and over. A meal will be provided at noon and is included in the cost of admission.
