Marking a 216 in the first go followed by a 218 in the second go, the pair remained solid to earn the composite lead going into the finals this coming Sunday. She is a good mare. She has been very consistant and when she is good, she is good, exclaimed Dustin. The mare by Dual Rey and out of Adams favorite mare, Boonsmal Doctress, has NCHA earnings of over $113k to her credit, including winnings for the Breeder s Invitational Non-Pro Derby Championship and the NCHA Non-Pro Futurity Reserve title. The Doctress Orders will be shown throughout her aged event career before being bred. Her dam was one of my favorites. I actually won the Non Pro Cutting Stakes here on her, recalled Adams of the mare who has won over $200K in her career. 2 GEORGE & SUE HEARST Building a World Class Equine Facility The Paso Robles Events Center has seen a lot of growth over the past decade. A significant driving force behind this effort has been the generous and steadfast support by George and Sue Hearst of local Estrella Ranch. In 1999, the Mid-State Fair Heritage Foundation was formed to implement capital improvement programs for expansion of the facilities here at the Event Center. One of the major contributors to the Foundation as well as to the PCCHA and its two major events now held here in Paso Robles, are George and Sue Hearst. George and Sue have had a tremendous impact on the explosion of growth on this facility, said Event Center CEO Vivian Robertson. Specifically, the Hearsts are largely responsible for the addition of the new Equestrian Center and Livestock Pavilion, making the Paso Robles Event Center one of the top equine facilities on the west coast today. With George s knowledge as a horseman and rancher, he has been able to help us with the idea and conception of the Center, emphasized Vivian. As a result, the Events Center has become nationally recognized for being a multi-purpose and multi-functional facility. We are able to move between completely different (equine) disciplines from one week to the next and put on some of the largest events around, she added. The Hearst s contributions have exceeded our expectations. They are amazing friends to the Events Center. Thank you Sue and George. PCCHA events would not be the same without you and your generous support. 2 The Daily Cutter

Have you heard about The PCCHA TRAINER S GOLD CLUB? The PCCHA Trainers Gold Club consists of a group of cutting horse trainers that are dedicated to promoting and improving the future of cutting. Through leadership, education and good sportsmanship, this group of cutting horse trainers has a mission to support the growth of our sport of cutting, while recognizing the importance of the customers and sponsors who are the driving force PCCHA Trainer s Committee Chairman Andrew Coates. behind the industry. According to PCCHA Trainers Committee Chairman, Andrew Coates, the trainers wanted to give back to the industry that has supported them for so many years. We realized that we needed to find new ways to ensure that our membership continues to grow, The goal of the Gold Club is to attract and support newcomers to cutting. I feel if there is a way we, as trainers, could help promote the sponsors more with what we do, it would be one way we could give back to them, states Coates. We want to show our appreciation to those who have helped us grow. There is a lot we can do as well, to help our industry grow. The PCCHA has a group called the Platinum Club which consists of general members who have given sponsorships to the association. These members have dipped into their own pockets for years and years for the benefit of the sport. We felt it was high time that the trainers step up and do the same thing and not just rely on the sponsors and owners, commented Coates. To be a member of the Trainers Gold Club, the trainers pays a $1000 to join. Of the membership fee, $250 will go into the Owners Appreciation Dinner held during the PCCHA Derby held in March. We felt this was a way for us to thank our owners for allowing us to do something we love and for supporting us as a whole, says Andrew. The Dave McGregor award is also presented during this dinner. The Gold Club is taking a proposal to the PCCHA Board of Directors regarding their idea for the remaining $750 for the 2010 year until they are able to reach new sponsors. Our proposal to them will entail starting a new intermediate division, states Coates. The remaining money from our membership will go to a purse for this division when we get this approved. The trainers feel that adding this division will be beneficial for the owners, (Cont. on Page 9) The Daily Cutter 3

***** Ray Baldwin & WBR Absolut Ruby Red ***** in the lead of $200k Limited Non-Pro Futurity Texas cutter, Ray Baldwin, advanced to his first futurity finals aboard the mare he bred and raised, WBR Absolut Ruby Red. Waco Bend Ranch manager and Fort Worth, TX resident Ray Baldwin has guided his fair share of horses to limitedage finals, but un- til this week, he d never made one with a 3-year-old. He s now done it twice. Baldwin, 33, and home-raised 3-year-old mare WBR Absolut Ruby Red compete in Sunday s Futurity Non-Pro finals and Saturday s $200,000 Futurity Non-Pro finals. They marked a preliminary- best 215 Thursday in the $200,000 division. Jacob Pinheiro, 20, who lopes horses for Templeton, CA cutting trainer Morgan Cromer, qualified for the same two finals with the first limitedage horse that he s ever ridden. The young rider and his gelding Ann Olenas Cat finished second to Baldwin and his mare with a 214. Six of the 15 horses in the $200,000 Non-Pro firstgo advanced to Saturday s finals. Baldwin and Pinheiro are the only riders competing in both finals. Baldwin and WBR Absolut Ruby Red, a horse that had earned $578, before arriving in Paso Robles, marked a 4 The Daily Cutter Futurity Non-Pro first-round best 219 on Tuesday. The duo followed that up with a solid on Wednesday to easily make the Futurity Non-Pro finals. Competing for the third day in a row on Thursday during the $200,000 Futurity Non-Pro s only preliminary round, the One Time Pepto filly, out of a High Brow Cat mare, Ruby Red Cat, didn t seemed fazed. She just seems to be getting better each time I show her, said Baldwin. She s just very calm and relaxed. She really controlled the cows well today. I m just glad to get through that run and hopefully we ll do well in the finals. While managing the Waco Bend Ranch facility that trains and raises cutting horses in Graham, TX, Ray has competed often and well the past few years while earning about $250,000 in winnings. He s the first to admit, though, that he s still got a lot to learn, especially when it comes to riding 3-year-old horses. I m real excited about that. As many times as I ve shown, this is my first futurity final, he admitted. These young horses are so tough to get shown if you are not that experienced. It s very rewarding to make it on one that we raised. Baldwin made a point of singling out his herd helpers for praise, noting his A-Team including Phil Rapp, John Mitchell, Rock Hedlund and Matt Gaines has had a lot to do with what s been a great week for his horses so far in the futurity division and in others. It s a neat sport when you can get four of the best in the world to help you and have them on your side and rooting for you, said Ray. I absolutely could not have done it without them. While it took Baldwin several years to reach his first limited-age finals, Jacob Pinheiro has enjoyed an early run of success while making it to the finals in his first four tries. He s (Cont. on page 6)

(Right) Kyle Manion and A Smooth Criminal marked a 216 to tie to win the Non Pro Gelding Stakes second go as well as the lead in the composite with a (NP Cutting Stks...Cont. from page 1) best, if not the best, I have ever ridden, he added. Today this mare was good. The second cow made the run. My mare stayed with it and held it. She felt great. This mare has a lot of style, and gets real low and draws a cow to her. She is gritty and tough. That is the only way we held that second cow today. It would have been a lot of cow for any horse and she just handled it and that is what makes her good, he smiled. Dustin and his wife Deena, are expecting their first child- a boy, in April. Dustin raises and trains his own horses in Dublin, TX and has earnings of well over $3m including multiple aged event championships. Kyle Manion and A Smooth Criminal marked a 216 to tie to win the Non Pro Gelding Stakes second go as well as the lead in the composite with a By Manion s stallion, Smooth As A Cat and out of Matt and Megan Miller s mare, Carolena Moon, Kyle said he has always favored this horse. Matt Gaines had him and showed him for his previous owner, Roxanne Koepsell, explained Manion. I bought him a couple of months ago. This is my third show on him. The pair made the Non-Pro finals earlier this fall at the Music City Futurity in Nashville. This weekend will be there second time to a final round. I have to give a lot of credit to my help here, Tim Smith, Matt Miller, Matt Gaines and Phil Rapp, admitted Kyle. I am not used to cutting steers. They are a little tricky. I haven t cut steers for two years since I was out here last. He added, They told me to be a little smoother on my cuts. If something doesn t work out to option off and something going away from me. Cut a little more shape. With NCHA lifetime earnings exceeding $777K, Kyle works on the family ranch in Aubrey, TX. He also holds a real estate license that keeps him busy. Having already achieved a spot in the Non-Pro Futurity and Cutting Stakes Finals, he has one more opportunity for a finalist slot in the Non Pro Classic/Challenge to be decided in today s second round. Also with a 216 in round two of the Non Pro Gelding Stakes was Suzi Rodoni Silverberg and Reys Hot Wheels. Suzi says she was set on finding a gelding to compete with in the Gelding division at this year s event. My friends all told me to buy a gelding, she said. I had all mares and they have all moved on to the broodmare band. I didn t have anything to show! I saw Reys Hot Wheels at Tim Smith s and asked him if there was any way he was for sale. Tim was able to make the deal and now I have my gelding to show. Reys Hot Wheels is by Dual Rey and out of Smart Little Beauty. He currently sports NCHA earnings of $36,671. I had a good draw. I was second in the first set. I was able to cut the cattle I wanted to cut. He was good for me. He was quick and just worked well, she said. I am happy. We made the finals. I am still getting with him but feel more comfortable after today. A resident of Santa Cruz, CA, Suzi lives there with her husband Kaine and daughter Kaylee, 13. She is in the real estate industry and in the mortgage business, as well. Suzi has lifetime earnings of more than $177K. Bonnie Martin and Light N Lindy took charge of the Senior division of the Non-Pro Cutting Stakes with high scores in both rounds and the composite lead going into the finals. Needless to say, Bonnie is pleased with her mare. She is just a nice mare. Solid and easy. I like showing her, she offered. I just wanted to stay consistent and show clean. Light N Lindy is owned by Bonnie and her husband and fellow non- pro competitor, Frank. The couple resides in Las Vegas. Tom Bailey and Shesa Spooky (Cont. on page 6) The Daily Cutter 5

$200K NP Fut...Cont. from page 4) riding a horse actually given to him as a scholarship by California ranch owner and horseman Fred Steck, just before Ann Olenas Cat turned 2. Ann Olenas Cat, a gelding, sired by WR This Cats Smart and out of the Miss N Cash mare, Miss Ann Olena, and Pinheiro have already clinched just under $6,000 as Futurity Non-Pro Reserve Champions in the Gelding division. That gives them about $19,000 earned since August. And, of course, they ll compete for two more checks this weekend. I m very excited about him. He s been great, Pinheiro said. He s been a lot of fun to show, especially for a first futurity horse. I feel very privileged to have him. Earlier in the week, Pinheiro and Ann Olenas Cat marked a two-go 424 during the first two rounds of the Non-Pro Futurity. That was just enough to land on the bubble and qualify for their fourth futurity finals. They placed third in the Non-Pro finals at the Fort Klamath Ranch Festival back in August, but they lost cows in finals at the El Rancho Futurity in September and at the South Point Futurity in Las Vegas about two weeks ago. I m hoping things turn out a little bit better here, said Jacob. He s getting stronger and more confident and I ve been getting more confident showing him. I m really excited about getting two chances here. Kate Neubert, 28, a former cow horse competitor who decided to specialize in cutting four years ago, has been working with Morgan Cromer ever since. Pinheiro joined them as their loper three years ago. Pinheiro initiated early training of his own horse, then asked his coworker and friend (Neubert) if she could help him get the job done with Blackie. It s been really fun training him and it s been fun seeing him do well for Jake, said Kate. It s been very rewarding. The horse was pretty easy to train, I (Non-Pro Cutting Stks...Cont. from page 5) Bonnie Martin and Tom Bailey tied for the lead score in the Senior division of the Non-Pro Cutting Stakes 2nd go-round. Pepto tied Bonnie s second round lead score of 214 in the Senior division, though the pair did not advance to the finals. The Carbondale, CO cutter has achieved $81,357 in NCHA lifetime earnings, including the Non-Pro Classic Senior Championship at the 2010 Super Stakes. He is also the owner of this year s Open 5/6 Reserve Champion, Rey Down Sally a mare Bailey jokes he has never thrown a leg over! While narrowly missing the six-horse $200K Futurity Non-Pro finals with a seventh-place 206, Alex Penovaroff and CD Lil Man still won both the $100K Ltd. and the Senior rider sub-divisions. The Hawaii resident will add two checks to his $71,735 in prior career cutting earnings. According to NCHA records, CD Lil Man, a gelding, had no recorded earnings as a cutter prior to this event. 7 Tara Gaines & Peptacular Lead $200K Limited 5/6 Year-Old Huntsberger and Martin capture division best scores???????????????????????????????????????????? Tara and Matt Gaines Tara Gaines and Peptacular have had pretty good success in Paso Robles. Marking a 220, Tara and the Peptoboonsmal mare won the go round of the $200K Limited Non Pro 5/6 yesterday as well as the $100K Limited Division. Earlier in the week, the pair won the NCHA Non Pro class marking a She is a great mare, commented Tara. Matt had started three horses for Cinder Lakes Ranch as two-year-olds and she was one of them. They wanted to sell one early in their three-year-old year. I told Matt that she would be a good investment. She is bred great. By Pepto and out of Miss Echo Wood. Tara seemed to make a good choice. The 6 yearold-mare has earned just shy of $100,000. I am hoping to be able to win enough here to put her over that mark. If that happens, she will no longer be shown, added Tara. The mare has 6 foals, one two-year-old, 3 yearlings, and two weanlings. I am excited to see them show. She was good today. I was lucky enough to be able to cut the cattle we had picked, says Gaines. I think she has matured a lot. She has really learned to just do her job. There was one time I thought I should maybe ride harder one way but I just stayed out her way. She was smart on the cattle. Tara, whose lifetime earnings are $121,761.35, is married to NCHA trainer Matt Gaines. They live in Weatherford where they run and operate Matt Gaines Cutting Horses. Tara is originally from Woodland, California and moved to Texas ten years ago. Debbie Hall and Boogerlicious were the Gelding Classic/Challenge go round leader with a score of Debbie was happy with her home raised gelding. I was lucky to draw well. I cut the cattle we had picked and they fit my horse good, states Debbie. He needs cattle to challenge him a little and stay in his face. He was good today. Boogerlicious, whose earnings are Mary Kate Huntsberger $4,076.11, is by Mister Dual Pep. He is always the same. He is very easy. Uncomplicated. This is the first gelding I have had. I do not think I will have another mare. I like this, laughs Hall. I am excited to make the finals. This is the first time my daughter, Mary Kate Huntsberger, and I have both made the same finals, comments Hall. This will be very special for me. Our family will be able to come and watch us both show together. Hall, and husband Ross, live in Paso Robles, California. They have three sons and one daughter. Debbie is proud to be a homemaker, wife and mother. Hall s earnings are $97, Mary Kate Huntsberger and Dualin Sadie lead the way in the $10k Novice division of the Non-Pro 5/6. The 6-year-old mare, by Mister Dual Pep and out of Smart Sadie, has had very limited showing in her life. I bought her when she was four. I just used her on the ranch and gathered on her, explained Mary Kate. I had never entered the $200K, $100K or $10k novice but figured I might as well, and I m glad I did, she smiled. Drawing 12th in the last bunch, Huntsberger had to really watch the cattle. I was so excited. The cattle we had picked were still fresh when I went in to cut. And all shaped up, she replies. My mare was really good. The cattle were in her face and she is better on those kinds. Mary Kate is a hair stylist in Paso Robles. I love my job. It allows me to be able to show when I need to. The shop I work in is actually just few blocks from Frank Martin here, says Huntsberger. She and her husband Brian, live in Paso Robles. Brian is a farrier and is also showing here at the PCCHA Futurity on Friday. Las Vegas non-pro, Frank Martin, rode Bodee Me Up to the go- (Cont. on page 9) The Daily Cutter 7

HAYDON UPTON & SHES CAT ACTIN Wrap Up $200K NON-PRO CUTTING STAKES Preliminary Round After struggling during his first two turns in the cutting pen and failing to make the Cutting Stakes Non-Pro finals, Hayden Upton followed advice from a veteran trainer as he and his mare Shez Cat Actin got back on the right track with a 219 to lead Thursday night s first round of the $200K Limited Non-Pro Cutting Stakes. The 2009 PCCHA $200K Limited Non-Pro Futurity Champion and the only horse he s competing with will try to make their second PCCHA Futurity event finals in two years during today s second round. They compete in the second of two sets from a second to last draw. Suzy Rodoni Silverberg, Santa Cruz, Calif., and Reys Hot Wheels, the first gelding she s ever ridden at limited-age cuttings, marked a 218 for the round s second-best score and leads the Gelding division. Las Vegas resident Frank Martin, 63, whose wife Bonnie s favorite horse, Kittens, hosted Thursday night s lively Vendor Lane Party, marked a 216 aboard his gelding Tru Merada. Martin ranked near the top and led the Senior division. Upton, 29, Los Banos, Calif., and Shez Cat Actin, sired by High Brow Cat and out of the Smart Little Lena mare Smart Little Til, don t compete often. When they do, they usually fare pretty well. Since they started competing together last fall, the duo has earned $31,530. So far, they ve never competed at a cutting without making a final. That streak appeared in jeopardy early this week, as the pair marked a firstgo 206 in the Cutting Stakes Non-Pro. They followed that with a second-go to finish well below the bubble. Last night, the 29-year-old horse Summa & Haydon Upton chiropractor and his mare fared much better after Upton listened to and enacted a more experienced rider s fairly simple game plan. 9 (Cont. from previous page) will take care of me, Upton said. So, that really needed to be my focus, just go cut good. I think I did a better job of doing that. I got the cows cut that I wanted to get cut. Upton s day job keeps him busy. His hobby, training his own horses, takes some time, too. The native Australian, who moved to America at 19, and his wife, Summa, work together during the day. She also rides turn back for him at night as he trains. His wife also lopes horses and Upton says he s trying to talk her into competing next year. Silverberg marked Thursday s second-best 218 score aboard Reys Hot Wheels, a Dual Rey gelding out of the Smart Little Lena mare Smart Little Beauty. They have already qualified for Saturday s Gelding Stakes Non-Pro finals. Today, during the second round of the $200K Non-Pro, they ll try to make that event s Sunday finals as well. Silverberg competed with a gelding when she first started cutting, but she had ridden only mares the past several years. She decided something had to give when midway through this year, she owned 15 cutting-bred horses, but didn t have a single one to compete with. I found myself in a quandary where I had all these mares that once I was doing showing them, I d turned them into broodmares and I had all these babies, Silverberg said. So I was sitting there with nothing to show. Everybody told me, Suzy, you need a good gelding in your life. I thought You know what, you re right. Silverberg noticed Tim Smith competing with Reys Hot Wheels in limited-age Open events earlier this year. She then told him she sure would appreciate him talking the gelding s owner into letting her buy him. When that chance eventually materialized, she jumped at it. The deal went down in July and this is just the third show she has ridden the horse at. At their last event, the South Point Futurity, a couple of weeks ago in Las Vegas, they missed the Derby Non-Pro finals by a half-point. At each event, the duo seems to be picking up steam. My horse is just getting more confident, Silverberg said. He s still got more gears that he s not using. I like to go fast and he likes to go fast, so that s good. Senior division leader Frank Martin and Tru Merada won a Senior Derby Non-Pro title at the NCHA Summer Spectacular in July. They tied for a Suzy Rodoni-Silverberg Derby Non-Pro Championship title in September at the Idaho Futurity. Like Upton, Martin struggled earlier and failed to make the Cutting Stakes Non-Pro finals. Two trainers he s worked with this year, Smith and Phil Hanson, both worked together Thursday to help Martin and his horse make adjustments and compete better. To me, it s been really gratifying to see Tim and Phil work together to help me ride better, Martin said. You ve got two competing trainers, but they re still looking out for my best interest. ($200K Ltd. 5/6...Cont. from page 7) ( Trainer s Gold Club...Cont. frompage 3) round lead in the Senior division of the $200K Limited Non Pro 5/6 with a 216. Frank, who has accumulated lifetime earnings of $226,787.79, is a general contractor. Bodee Me Up, by Bodee Boonsmal has earned $72, in her career with both Martin and Idaho trainer Russ Miller. Frank and wife, Bonnie, were the gracious hosts of last night s Oktoberfest Vendor Party. industry and young trainers starting out. Having this division will increase the number of entries at the cuttings. It allows our owners to have another place to show the horses that may not be quite open quality, says Andrew. We feel this is a way for the more established trainers to be able reach out and help the younger trainers build their business, grow and have success, he relies. I believe it is important for the established trainers to help the new trainers become better business managers.i know as a young trainer, it would have been helpful to me.
